West Ham fans erupt over Mail transfer news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have erupted over a transfer update from The Daily Mail as reporter Simon Jones shares manager David Moyes’ plans for January.

The Hammers and recruitment chief Rob Newman are set for an interesting winter window as they aim to back Moyes in his quest to guide West Ham to a top four finish.

The club also find themselves still competing in Europe after finishing top of their group but it is arguable that West Ham need some fresh faces this month if they are to stay at this level.

According to Jones of The Mail, the Irons and Moyes are eyeing a centre-back, left-back and forward this month as both Newman and Moyes work their way through targets.

It is believed that the West Ham chiefs could now target Lille star Jonathan David, Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly, Everton’s Lucas Digne and Sparta Prague attacker Adam Hlozek.

West Ham fans erupt…

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham fans have been left overjoyed by the four names allegedly on Moyes’ and Newman’s agenda this month – with one supporter calling this transfer claim ‘sensational’.

Another claimed landing all four men would be the Irons’ ‘best ever window’.

It’s not hard to understand their excitement either, with Digne racking up an impressive seven assists in his last full top flight campaign, while David has bagged 15 times this season and Hlozek six.

Myers offers update on EFC manager search

Everton are having a season of nightmares with manager troubles that have seen the search for a sixth manager in six years begin amid poor performances in the Premier League leading to the side falling to 16th in the table, just four points off the relegation zone, without a single win in their last five league games.

What’s the word?

Journalist and Everton insider, Alan Myers, has given an update on the current managerial situation at Goodison Park, when asked by a fan whether Duncan Ferguson could become the full-time manager of the side.

Myers gave an update on the progress in his Twitter replies, writing:

“My understanding is nobody has made any decisions yet on the way forward, I think the search process continues running alongside what may happen in the next two or three games.”

Sky Sports have reported several potential suitors for the job including Derby County manager, Wayne Rooney and out of work ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, who are reportedly both favourites in the search for the next Everton manager.

Fans surely frustrated

Myers’ update will leave fans further frustrated as the pressure mounts on the Everton board to find the right manager to lead the club out of the despairing season they have faced so far.

Everton lost their fourth game in their last five on Saturday against Aston Villa, and fan fury boiled over as former player Lucas Digne secured an assist for the goal that led to Villa’s victory at Goodison Park.

That led to one fan throwing a bottle at the former Everton defender, and supporters took their anger further by approaching Bill Kenwright on his way out of the stadium, with videos surfacing on social media of Toffees fans demanding answers from the chairman.

Farhad Moshiri needs to work fast in finding solutions for the problems Everton currently face, with Ferguson under pressure to take something from the glimmer of hope their two games in hand has given them over Norwich City that they have gained from postponements, and at this stage every game has become a must-win for the Toffees.

Ferguson seems like a temporary solution and thus, fans will surely grow all the more frustrated the longer the wait goes on to find a new permanent head coach.

Bruno Lage drops Wolves injury update

Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a fine start to their Premier League campaign in the first half of the season, despite losing a few key players to long-term injury issues, and Bruno Lage has now given Wolves fans a treat for the new year with an update on player returns.

What’s the word?

The manager took to his pre-match press conference ahead of Monday’s visit to Manchester United to confirm that two key players are training, with an update on their expected returns.

Speaking briefly about Pedro Neto and Jonny Otto’s progress in training, Lage gave an idea of how long the pair will take to get back to match fitness, revealing: “They will need to adapt, so I think five or six weeks at least until they are fully fit to play. Pedro will return and start training with us at the beginning of January.”

Neto sustained an injury to his patella after the 1-0 win over Fulham in April of last year and has not been available to play at all in the 2021/22 season so far. As for Jonny, he sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury around the same time, and like Neto, he has not been featured in the team as of yet this term.

Fans will be buzzing

The long-awaited return of the two players will leave Wolves fans buzzing. Neto would surely improve the Old Gold’s hitherto feeble attacking prowess, having accrued 11 goal contributions last term, whilst Jonny would bring his seasoned defensive experience in their pursuit of European football next season.

Lage’s side have a number of difficult games coming up in the first few weeks of the year, with matches against Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Leicester City all on the horizon, and he will be hoping that they can improve their form even more to give them the best chance of finishing in a European place.

Wolves will be back in action on Monday at Old Trafford, with Manchester United in much-improved form since Ralf Rangnick has arrived, unbeaten in the league on his watch with four wins out of five.

It promises to be a tough test for Wolves, but at least they can go into the game knowing that the likes of Jonny and Neto are nearing their long-awaited comebacks.

Lions hit by De Kock, Tahir bans

Lions’ key playmakers Quinton de Kock and Imran Tahir have been banned for one match each following disciplinary hearings

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Jan-2013The Lions have been dealt a major blow in their quest for the first-class title. Key playmakers Quinton de Kock and Imran Tahir have been banned for one match each following disciplinary hearings. Both players pleaded guilty to Level 2 offences which result in a ban of one first-class or two limited-overs game in accordance with CSA’s code of conduct.De Kock was involved in an on-field scuffle with Cape Cobras’ Alistair Gray last week. After the umpires asked for the ball to be changed because of suspected tampering, the Lions pair at the crease chose a ball the Cobras were unhappy with and Gray and de Kock exchanged words before de Kock pushed Gray. The day after the story hit local media, de Kock tweeted an apology for “embarrassing” his team and pledged to “do everything I can to make up for it.” His contriteness was noted by the disciplinary commissioner.”I find Mr de Kock guilty of a breach of clause 6.3.1 (c) and (f) of the Code of Conduct in that he inappropriately and deliberately had physical contact with a player in the course of play; and used language that is seriously obscene, offensive or insulting towards another participant,” disciplinary commissioner Rian Cloete said in a statement.”Mr de Kock has a clean disciplinary record and has never been charged with an offence in cricket. Mr de Kock further apologised to umpires George and Jerling for his behaviour. “Even though the bans apply to the next matches a player will feature in, de Kock who is currently playing for South Africa in the ODI series against New Zealand will be able to continue representing the national side. Instead, he will miss the Lions’ match against the Knights in two weeks’ time.Tahir’s offence came in a match against the Knights late last year in Potchefstroom. After an interchange of angry words between the Knights’ bowlers and Tahir, the legspinner issued some choice words from the dressing room for all to hear before going on to score his fourth first-class fifty. Tahir, who offered apology in writing, was charged with the breach of clause 6.3.1 (f) as well.Tahir will miss this week’s match between the Lions and the Titans in Benoni which could prove an important one for the Lions as they try to catch the leaders. The Lions are third on the points table, 13 points behind the Cobras but they have a game in hand. De Kock will miss this fixture because he is part of the national squad

Celtic: McAvennie hopeful for Furuhashi

Former Celtic player Frank McAvennie says he wouldn’t be surprised if Kyogo Furuhashi made a ‘shock appearance’ in Sunday’s Scottish League Cup final.

The lowdown

Furuhashi has missed Celtic’s last two games through an injury he sustained in his side’s final Europa League group stage game against Real Betis.

Ange Postecogolou brought on the Japan international when Albian Ajeti was forced off with a hamstring injury, only for Furuhashi to suffer the same problem.

Celtic already knew they would be finishing third in the group and entering the Europa Conference League playoff round, so the game was something of a dead-rubber.

And now Furuhashi faces a late fitness test at Lennoxtown ahead of the Hampden Park clash with Hibernian.

The latest

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie suggested that Furuhashi’s fitness may be better than Postecoglou is letting on.

He thinks there’s a possibility that the 26-year-old will play a part in Sunday’s showpiece.

“There have been a few times where Ange has said players won’t make it or they will only make the bench,” he said.

“Then they are in from the start in the next game. So well will see what happens.

“I’m not getting my hopes up but it wouldn’t surprise me if Kyogo did make some sort of shock appearance.”

The verdict

It would be a huge boost for Celtic if Furuhashi made it. He’s the Hoops’ top scorer with 11 goals in all competitions and, crucially, his nearest challenger – Jota, who has eight goals – is already confirmed out.

There’s a possibility, then, that they find themselves short of firepower against Shaun Maloney’s Hibs.

But as well as enhancing Celtic’s goalscoring threat, Furuhashi’s return would also surely improve morale in the camp. He’s a player team-mates can look to for decisive moments of quality in games like this.

Indeed, Jota has marvelled at his ‘unbelievable’ movements, and having at least one of the pair back would be a massive boost.

Watts returns for World Cricket League

Scotland’s selectors have named a 15-man squad for the ICC World Cricket League Division 1, to be held in the Netherlands from June 30 to July 10

Cricinfo staff04-Jun-2010Scotland’s selectors have named a 15-man squad for the ICC World Cricket League Division 1, to be held in the Netherlands from June 30 to July 10. The emphasis is on youth, as the squad has nine players aged 25 or under, but Fraser Watts’s excellent recent form in the domestic leagues has also earned him a place.Gavin Hamilton and Ryan Watson are both unavailable due to work commitments, while Freddie Coleman is taking time off in the lead-up to the event to concentrate on finishing his school term. This gives opportunities to young batsmen Ewan Chalmers, Preston Mommsen and Josh Davey, who have also been included in the squad to take on the hosts in a four-day Intercontinental Cup and one-day international match prior to the tournanment.”The World Cricket League will be a highly-competitive event, and it gives our players an excellent opportunity to test themselves against the other leading Associates,” said Peter Steindl, Scotland’s head coach. “We have picked the squad with the future as well as the present in mind, so I am looking forward to seeing how the players cope with the tournament environment.”Scotland squad: Gordon Drummond (capt), Richie Berrington, Josh Davey, Ewan Chalmers, Gordon Goudie, Majid Haq, Omer Hussain, Neil Laidlaw, Dougie Lockhart, Ross Lyons, Gregor Maiden, Neil McCallum, Preston Mommsen, Matthew Parker, Fraser Watts

Joe Gomez tipped to shine at Newcastle

Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez has been tipped to shine at Newcastle United if a potential shock move goes through in January.

The Lowdown: Gomez struggling for playing time

The 24-year-old’s 2020/21 season was ruined by a serious knee injury and he has struggled to get going this time around, too.

Gomez is currently sidelined with a separate issue but he wasn’t featuring prominently before his latest absence, appearing for just 13 minutes in the Premier League.

The England international has been linked with a ‘shock’ move away from Liverpool in January and Eddie Howe could view him as an option to come in.

The Latest: Pundit talks up Newcastle move

Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes Gomez could make a huge impact at St James’ Park but has doubts about it coming to fruition:

“You’ve seen already that Zouma has been allowed to leave Chelsea. You never say never but it would be a shock.

“There are teams out there that need centre-half replacements. I’m looking at Newcastle for one.

“You could probably build a team around him at centre-half. He’s an amazing player and could be one of the pieces that Eddie Howe is looking for.

“But look, I mean, Joe Gomez seems to sort of player that wants to fight for his place before anything else. He’ll only think about his future Liverpool if he’s not required.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-copy/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Surely Klopp won’t sell

Gomez will find it hard to become a regular at Liverpool in the near future, given the presence of both Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip, but it would still be a huge surprise if he was allowed to leave.

The Reds’ centre-back injury crisis last season shows that having as many good options as possible is vital, as Klopp’s men look to win both the Premier League and Champions League.

Not only that but Van Dijk and Matip are now 30 years of age – six years Gomez’s senior – so he may well be looked at as the future of Liverpool’s back-line, along with Ibrahima Konate.

It wasn’t long ago that he was Van Dijk’s main partner, starting 22 out of 38 league games in the title-winning season, so he will surely still be seen as an important figure moving forward, assuming he is the same player after injury.

In other news, another Liverpool player could also leave in January. Find out who it is here.

Villa fans react to Archer contract

Aston Villa youngster Cameron Archer has put pen to paper on a new contract, the club have confirmed.

The 20-year-old’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season, but he’s now inked a fresh four-year agreement.

Why is there excitement over Archer?

Archer, who can play as a centre forward and as a winger, has been directly involved in 23 goals (scoring 16 and assisting seven) in 34 appearances for Villa’s Under-23s.

And he’s made an instant impact at the senior level this season, having been handed opportunities to impress.

He bagged a hat-trick on his full debut against Barrow in the EFL Cup, and was also on target in the next round against reigning European champions Chelsea.

What’s more, Archer was named player of the group stage in the EFL Trophy after scoring six times in three games against Football League opposition.
