Leeds fans rave about Mateusz Bogusz’s display for Poland U21s

Having signed from Ruch Chorzow back in January 2019, Mateusz Bogusz has found himself on the periphery of the first-team picture at Leeds United, making just two appearances.

The 19-year-old has yet to make a start for the Whites in league football, with his sole 90 minutes coming in the Carabao Cup. Despite the lack of game-time, Marcelo Bielsa’s side handed Bogusz a new contract earlier in the summer, tying him down until 2023.

Is it Haaland Snr or David Hopkins? Your Leeds knowledge will be put to the test with this quiz…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

With the international break in full flow, the starlet looked impressive as he scored twice in Poland U21’s 6-0 thrashing of Estonia on Friday evening.

And after seeing his goal-scoring display, Leeds fans took to Twitter to hail the youngster.

A couple of fans even wondered why Bogusz isn’t in the starting line-up already at Elland Road.

With Bogusz seeing very little game-time in the Championship, it’s difficult to see how Bielsa will include him when the Premier League gets underway next week.

The Carabao Cup could again be where Leeds fans see the Polish prodigy in action, and with him only being 19, there’s still plenty of time for him to blossom into a regular for Bielsa in the coming years.

Man Utd star Paul Pogba outshone Bruno Fernandes on Thursday

Amidst the sheer brilliance of Bruno Fernandes since his arrival from Sporting CP back in the January transfer window, the attention has firmly been on the Manchester United play-maker – eight goals and seven assists in 15 games are a testament to that.

But in recent weeks, another star from Old Trafford is beginning to share centre stage with him, and against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Thursday night, he arguably outshone Fernandes. Step forward, Paul Pogba.

The France World Cup winner has of course been the subject of intense transfer speculation for a couple of seasons now, but reports in recent weeks have suggested that he is now much happier at United and is likely to stay this summer.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And boy is he proving what an incredible outcome that could be.

The midfielder scored in United’s 3-0 victory over Villa, and offered the kind of creativity from the engine room that you just don’t get from the likes of Scott McTominay and Fred.

As per Sofascore, he completed two of his three attempted dribbles, provided three key passes, created one big chance, and successfully completed all 11 of his long balls.

He ran the show from the middle of the park, enjoying 93 touches (the most of any United player and 24 more than Fernandes), and completed 72 of his 79 passes.

It was no surprise that his overall match rating of 8.4 was the highest of any player on the pitch, and whilst he has arguably been in Fernandes’ shadow recently, he showed exactly what he can bring too.

Such has been United’s impressive form, that they are now well placed to finish in the top four and secure Champions League football for next season.

And Pogba is really inspiring this late charge for it.

Sunderland: Wolves make contact with academy starlet Daniel Neil

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made contact with Sunderland over academy starlet Daniel Neil, according to Football Insider.

Interest in the youngster became public just under two weeks ago as Wolves followed up a report linking Leeds United with a move.

Sunderland have endured a difficult spell of late both in the first team and at academy level, seeing a whole host of young players leave the Stadium of Light.

With the 2019/20 season now done and dusted, another young talent could be set to leave the Academy of Light, with a recent report claiming that Wolves have now made contact with Sunderland in an attempt to sign the 18-year-old midfielder.

Football Insider also reported that a recruitment source close to them has said that Wolves are desperate to beat off competition from Leeds and Newcastle, who have also been linked to Neil.

Neil has been a regular for the Black Cats’ under-23 side with 13 appearances to his name last season in Premier League 2.

Having made just one senior appearance, the youngster is reportedly available for a six-figure transfer fee which would hand the Wearsiders compensation for his training and development costs, as per Football Insider.

Another player looks set to leave Sunderland’s academy setup, and the Black Cats really need to get to grips with the club’s youth sides and entice players to remain on Wearside, albeit easier said than done when Premier League clubs are showing interest.

Hopefully the first team can make progress on the pitch, ideally in the form of promotion to the Championship next year, so that Sunderland’s academy stars may be more inclined to stay put instead of seeing a better future elsewhere.

Newcastle could lead takeover revolution with Antero Henrique

According to RMC Sport (via Get French Football News), Newcastle’s potential owners have approached PSG’s former sporting director Antero Henrique over taking up a similar role at St James’ Park.

What’s the word?

Despite the Magpies’ proposed takeover still not being given the green light for confirmation, it appears the Saudi consortium are already drawing up plans on attempting to dominate English football.

According to French publication RMC Sport, Henrique has had “initial contacts with representatives for the relevant investment fund”, and that they outlined to him how they are keen to “build a team to eventually win the Premier League”.

Think you’re a big Magpies fan? Can you name these former players by looking at their careers? Go on, give it a go…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The report further adds that whilst no agreement has been found as of yet, the Portuguese man is interested by the Tyneside club’s project.

Revolution

Henrique may not be the most familiar of names to fans of English football, but he is widely known for helping to establish both Porto and PSG as real European players in his time at the two clubs.

At Porto, Henrique flourished in the role of discovering and unearthing new talents, before selling them for vast amounts of money and netting the Portuguese side a tonne of profit: the likes of Pepe, Ricardo Quaresma, Falcao, Hulk and James Rodriguez, amongst others, were just some of the high-profile names who left for at least €20m (£17.8m) or more.

And then at PSG, it was Henrique’s personal touch that arguably saw the Parisiens edge out Real Madrid to the signing of French sensation Kylian Mbappe. Reports suggested that he “locked himself away for two days” with both the young striker and his father, eventually convincing them to snub Los Blancos.

Henrique would come with the kind of world reputation that just automatically lifts the profile of a club like Newcastle, and can help them compete to sign either up-and-coming young starlets, or ready-made stars. Having a sporting director to mastermind and strategise the recruitment success is arguably just as important, if not even more important, than bringing the right manager in.

In this modern footballing world of revolving doors when it comes to managers, sporting directors are the kinds of figures who tend to stay around for the long-term. And it’s exactly why appointing a genius like Henrique could be far more significant than persuading a Rafa Benitez or Mauricio Pochettino to take charge in the dugout.

The Chalkboard: Pochettino’s team selection almost cost Spurs against Newcastle

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has Heung-Min Son to thank for his side’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon. The South Korean forward struck in the 83rd minute to finally break the deadlock, after Spurs dominated much of the game up to that point without being able to produce any end product.

However, it was the introduction of Fernando Llorente, who assisted Son’s winning goal, that truly changed the course of the match.

On the chalkboard

Pochettino’s side were on top throughout the first half. They persistently played crosses into the box from dangerous areas, but the Magpies’ were consistently able to deal with them. This is because Spurs lacked a physical presence.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

With in his introduction on the hour mark, Llorente finally gave the home team a focal point. The 33-year-old Spaniard took up a target man role and was able to use his 6’4” frame to good effect. For Son’s goal, he was able to hold off a Newcastle defender and chest the ball into Son’s path.

Late luck for Pochettino

Llorente was the perfect man to lead Spurs’ attack against Newcastle, who pulled no surprises with their game plan of sitting deep and soaking up pressure, which begs the question as to why Pochettino didn’t include the striker in his starting XI.

Ultimately, the fact that Spurs took all three points is all that matters, but had Llorente been on the pitch in the first half, he could have had an earlier impact and perhaps Spurs would then have enjoyed a more comfortable victory.

By not starting the veteran striker, Pochettino almost cost his side the win, and was fortunate that Llorente was able to make the difference in the final ten minutes.

Big money invested across the last 12 monthsLittle return enjoyed so farUrged to snap up more proven talentWHAT HAPPENED?

The Premier League giants have invested heavily since Todd Boehly completed his takeover of the club in summer 2022. Eye-watering amounts of money have been splashed out on the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez, Malo Gusto, Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer.

AdvertisementWHAT THEY SAID

Begovic, who spent two seasons at Stamford Bridge between 2015 and 2017, has told podcast of business in west London: "If you’re spending £115m on Caicedo, surely you spend £120m on Declan Rice? I don’t know Declan personally, I’m not saying he doesn’t want to play for Arsenal, but hand on heart I think he’d have wanted to go to Chelsea. You look at some of these players and think, ‘How is Declan Rice going somewhere else?’ Players like this, they would go to Chelsea in the past; players in their prime, and Declan Rice is in his prime.

"I watch football like a mad man and I’m not familiar with half these players! For me it’s odd, the whole thing is very odd. I don’t see the construction of the team, this whole rebuilding transition phase is a bit of an excuse to me. I’m not saying I don’t like Enzo Fernandez, but if we’re going to spend £230m on him and Caicedo then I’d prefer Declan Rice over any of those players if I can get him. Get the best players in through the door please."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ex-Bosnia international Begovic, who took in 33 appearances for the Blues and is now on the books at Queens Park Rangers, added: "Honestly, I mean in the last 12 months… what has happened at Chelsea football club? It just beggars belief. I mean the squad of players at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal, the amount of money spent is 12th in the league – it’s mid-table! It is literally mid-table. If they were any higher you would be working miracles. You have a bit of [bad] luck with Christopher Nkunku, I get it, he’s a top player. Cole Palmer has only just come in.

"But what is going on with the recruitment of these players? Why is Chelsea football club rebuilding? Why is Chelsea football club in a transition? This is one of the best. I mean I’ve been there. I’m proud to have been there. It’s one of the best locations to play football in the world. I remember being with players in the dressing room, world class, world class, world class. Buying from Barcelona, buying from Real Madrid, buying from Bayern Munich. It’s like, we’re buying from Brighton, potential players. And I get you need a part of that, but where is the top world class players?"

The versatile Portugal international has been heavily linked with the Catalan giants for some time, with his undoubted ability of obvious appeal to ambitious outfits around the world. Barca had been hoping to do a deal for Cancelo back in January, with it claimed that City prevented them from completing a swoop in that window.

Everything you need to know about the Inter Miami kits for 2023

Inter Miamilook set to be thrust even closer to the summit of sporting recognition in the football world, with the news that World Cup champion Lionel Messi will continue his career in Major League Soccer with the Floridian outfit starting in July. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s arrival at DRV PNK Stadium will not come a moment too soon for a team currently in free-fall following a dismal campaign to date.

With the capture of one of soccer’s all-time greats, however, anticipation and demand is expected to be through the roof for Miami’s 2023 season kit, developed by Messi’s long-term commercial partner adidas, with the German sportswear giant anticipating record-breaking numbers when the Argentina star makes his official debut.

So, what kits are Inter Miami wearing in 2023? GOAL takes a look at the jerseys that are already sported by the team, including star players Corentin Jean and DeAndre Yedlin, while we also give you the lowdown on how to buy them online.

Inter Miami 2023 kits

Inter Miami 2023 home kit, release date & priceInter Miami CF$89.99 at the MLS store

With the 2023 MLS season already well underway, Inter Miami’s home kit for the season has long been available for supporters to purchase, with adidas sticking close to the traditional club colours favoured by the David Beckham-owned team.

Having once played in white, the Herons’ home strip – dubbed The Heartbeat Kit by the club’s official channels – is now a full-bodied pink number with smart dark accents.

The candyfloss-hued shades have been a regular fixture for the past few campaigns, but it has seen a slight update for the 2023 campaign, with a marginally sharper contrast between the two colours.

Black accents over the shoulders and a hollow-back club crest complete a smart, snappy look topped off with a traditional polo-shirt collar finish from adidas.

The kit is on sale now and can be purchased from the MLS store, where it retails at $90.00, with an authentic jersey option available at $130.00.

Much as with the home kit, Inter Miami’s 2023 away strip keeps matters relatively simple, with adidas effectively delivering one of the most simple jersey reverses seen in recent memory.

Whereas their home effort offers pink with black accents, their change option simply flips the board and delivers a jet-dark number tinged with pastel-coloured decal effects.

Like their first choice strip too, it also has an official club name, dubbed as La Noche, which translates from Spanish as The Night – an effectively cool moniker for such a slick number.

There are some minor changes; the shoulder piping is more elongated on the away option, and the Herons have also added a narrow pink band above the sleeve cap to offer further contrast. In addition, the neckline is a flat, rounded collar rather than a polo-style cut.

As with the home option, the kit is on sale now and can be purchased from the MLS store, where it retails at $89.99, while the authentic jersey option is available at $159.99.

Inter Miami 2023 third kit, release date & priceInter Miami CF$89.99 at the MLS store

Unlike the majority of major European teams, multiple MLS sides utilise only two specific strips across the course of a campaign, often simply stopping at home and away when it comes to their kits.

However, Inter Miami have indeed debuted a third-choice strip this season, known as the One Planet kit, an oceanographic-inspired effort that is intended to highlight the club’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

An acid-mint wash main body is decorated with a jazzy blue pattern and black accents, while a narrow V-neck cut allows for added breathability while offering a close fit around the back and shoulders.

The kit is currently available to order through the MLS store, with adult sizes retailing from $89.99.

In addition, there may be the possibility for a further kit launch to commemorate Messi’s arrival at the club. If such a celebration strip is released, GOAL will have all the details right here.

In addition to their regular matchday strips, Inter Miami have also gone all out on their pre-game training range this term, with their effort also showing support for a worthy cause.

The club have a Pride-themed pre-match number they use for warm-ups and training, marrying a full-bodied white effort with the kaleidoscopic colour swirls of the Pride flag across the sleeves and sponsorship logos, finished with black trim and a V-neck cut.

The kit is currently available to order through the MLS store, with adult sizes retailing from $69.99.

Pochettino, Kompany or Zidane: Who will replace Guardiola if he leaves Man City?

The Catalan looks as likely as he ever has to depart the Premier League champions – but who will end up replacing him at the Etihad Stadium?

The fallout from Manchester City being accused of breaching over 100 financial rules by the Premier League is only just beginning. But perhaps the most pressing, immediate concern for decision makers at the Etihad Stadium is what it means for Pep Guardiola's future.

In the past, their dynastic coach has made it clear that he would walk away from the club if they are guilty of any wrongdoing. While City claim to have a substantial body of evidence that will clear their name, reports have suggested that Guardiola is not likely to see out the remainder of his contract, which is currently set to expire in 2025.

Thus, the unthinkable could be about to become reality. Namely, Man City without Guardiola – the man who has scarcely done anything but win since taking over in 2016.

With succession planning seemingly underway, GOAL looks at who is most likely to take over from the Spaniard in Manchester…

(C)Getty Images8Mikel Arteta

Don't throw your phones across the room Arsenal fans, we're not saying this is a particularly realistic possibility!

Saying that, City would be fools to not at least sound out Arteta over a potential blockbuster return to the club where he worked as Guardiola's assistant for so long.

This would be the continuity choice, but the Spaniard would take some convincing. Arteta is building something very special in north London and is set to lead his team in the Champions League for the first time in 2023-24.

Would he really burn his bridges for a bigger transfer budget? Surely not.

AdvertisementGetty Images7Ange Postecoglou

This may feel like a left-field choice, but scratch beneath the surface and City appointing Postecoglou is not so preposterous.

The principle reason for his inclusion in this list is his experience working within the CFG (City Football Group) network of clubs. Before moving to Celtic in 2021, Postecoglou spent three fruitful years with Yokohama F. Marinos – CFG's flagship team in Japan – leading them to a J1 League title in 2019.

Since taking over in Glasgow, Postecoglou's reputation has been boosted considerably, with the Australian helping the Hoops wrestle back Scottish supremacy from Rangers. He is on course to register a second successive Premiership title this season, and his attractive style of play, as well as his propensity to have his full-backs tuck into midfield in possession, would make him a logical Guardiola successor.

The big issue here would be Postecoglou's ability to handle a dressing room containing far higher-profile players than he's used too – while his European record is scratchy at best. Saying that, being able to handle the Celtic pressure cooker as well as he has suggests he may be able to rise to the challenge.

Getty6Patrick Vieira

Another manager with FSG experience, former New York City manager Vieira has earned admirers for his work at Crystal Palace in recent seasons.

When he took over in 2021, the Eagles were heavily tipped for relegation, but the Frenchman recruited outstandingly, released the shackles imposed by Roy Hodgson and guided Palace to a comfortable mid-table finish and an FA Cup semi-final.

Things have been more challenging this campaign, but Vieira is still performing above expectations and could be offered a bigger job if he continues along his current path.

He cut his teeth as a coach with City's youth teams before taking over in New York, so is well acquainted with how the ownership like to do things.

It may seem unlikely right now, but a year or so down the line, Vieira may get the call up.

Getty Images5Thomas Tuchel

Following his controversial Chelsea sacking Tuchel took some time off at a wellness retreat in India. While there he received several calls from clubs – and it is not hard to see why he is so in demand.

The Blues' struggles under Graham Potter suggest the German was pretty hard done by to get the sack, and he would be in contention for any job in European football.

A potential issue is that Tuchel could be off the market by the time City are eventually looking to fill their vacant managerial position. He has been heavily touted to take over at Tottenham should Antonio Conte decide to depart at the end of his current contract, while the Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich jobs may be coming up soon.

In addition, his infamously combative personality may ultimately put City off.
