Leeds: Rodrigo was shocking vs Villa

Leeds United suffered a hugely disappointing defeat to Aston Villa on Thursday night, as Jesse Marsch’s Elland Road debut turned sour.

The Whites showed promising signs early on in the game before Ollie Watkins opened the scoring for the away side. An awful second-half performance led to Steven Gerrard’s men finding two more and leaving the Yorkshire-based outfit in real bother in the Premier League.

If Marsch was hoping for some big games for some of his more high-profile players, then he was sadly mistaken, with Rodrigo arguably the worst of the bunch.

The Spain international arrived from Valencia having built up considerable top-level experience of playing in La Liga and the Champions League too over the years.

None of that however has been on show at Elland Road though, and his current campaign has been nothing short of a disaster – he’s managed just three goals in 24 games in all competitions.

Against Villa, Rodrigo was so bad that Marsch hooked him at half-time for the much younger and inexperienced Joe Gelhardt, and that was a damning statement on where things are with the forward.

As per Sofascore, the Spaniard had far fewer touches and passes than even goalkeeper Illan Meslier, while anytime he did have the ball, he invariably lost it by being bullied by the Villa midfield and defence who left him no time to turn and pick a pass.

He had no shots on goal, provided no key passes or crosses, and lost possession nine times in the 45 minutes that he was on the pitch – the kind of wholly ineffective display that unsurprisingly had the Elland Road faithful begin to turn on him.

Writing in his post-match player ratings for Leeds Live, Beren Cross gave him the lowest score of a three, saying: “A wretched performance from the club’s record signing. Persistently miscontrolled the ball, misplaced passes, went backwards and slowed down counter-attacks. Confidence drained from him and the crowd were audibly frustrated with every passing error.”

Dubbed as being “anonymous” by The Yorkshire Post’s Leon Wobschall, Rodrigo endured a nightmare display, and it’s one that will surely have Marsch thinking twice about starting him again anytime soon.

The Whites find themselves in the midst of a real relegation dogfight, and the Spaniard’s performance lacked the composure to deal with that pressure, and the quality to even lift the side out of it.

While it may well be a very bold call to suggest Marsch should never start Rodrigo again this season, it could be the kind of ruthless decision that not only drops a badly under-performing player, but also lights a much-needed fire under the rest of the squad.

Sunderland set for Danny Batth boost

Sunderland are set for a huge injury lift this week over defender Danny Batth…

What’s the latest?

According to the Sunderland Echo, the centre-back is hopeful of being back fit and available for selection against Gillingham this weekend in League One.

Sunderland Echo quote the player as saying: “It’s been a niggly injury so we’ve kind of had to let it build up and obviously I’ve been working hard off the pitch in the gym and physically.

“The injury was pretty unfortunate, it was in a blocked tackle. I’ve won the ball and the guy has put all his weight into my ankle. There was no massive damage on the scan, it has just been niggling and niggling so hopefully that’s behind me now and I can crack on.“I’ve just been using the international break to get up to speed.” Buzzing

This update will surely leave Alex Neil buzzing, as having the 31-year-old back will be a major boost to the Sunderland squad heading into the final weeks of the campaign.

The Black Cats are vying for a place in the play-offs and need as many of their best players available as possible to give themselves the greatest chance of making the top six. They are currently seventh and two points off sixth in the table, so Batth’s return will be a timely boost.

He has already proven himself to be a reliable option at a higher level. The defender averaged a superb SofaScore rating of 7.10 for Stoke as he won 68% of his duels and made 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game in the Championship this season.

This shows that he has the quality to be an outstanding performer in the second tier as he delivered brilliant displays for the Potters. His statistics prove that he is playing below his station at the moment, and Sunderland supporters can look forward to seeing him hit top gear in the coming weeks.

Therefore, he should be able to replicate that form whilst playing at a lower standard of football. His experience and ability as a centre-back should make him an excellent player for Neil to call upon between now and the end of the season, as he could be able to have a huge say in their campaign if he can get back to the form that he showed for Stoke in the Championship.

This is why the 40-year-old will be buzzing that the defender is on his way back from injury and could be in contention to face Gillingham next weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur: Antonio Conte on PSG shortlist

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has been included on a nine-man shortlist drawn up by Paris Saint-Germain as they look to replace Mauricio Pochettino after their Champions League exit.

The Lowdown: PSG’s ex-Spurs boss

Current PSG boss Pochettino joined the Ligue 1 giants at the start of 2021 after taking a year-long break from management, following his departure from Tottenham.

The Argentine was a key figure in Spurs’ emergence as a consistent top-six side, after he joined the north London club in 2014 following 18 months in charge at Southampton.

The 50-year-old remained at Spurs for five-and-a-half years before being relieved of his duties due to a poor start to the 2019/20 season.

Since arriving in the French capital, Pochettino has won the Ligue 1 title and the French Super Cup. However, due to PSG’s woes in the Champions League, recently exiting at the hands of Real Madrid, club officials are looking for a replacement to come in over the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Interest in Conte

According to a report by French sources at L’Equipe (via Daily Mail), PSG have drawn up a shortlist consisting of candidates who could succeed Pochettino at the club, and Tottenham boss Conte has been included as a potential replacement.

Other names mentioned include Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, Juventus’ Massimiliano Allegri, Ajax’s Erik ten Hag, Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone, Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi, Spezia’s Thiago Motta and former Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.

The Verdict: Losing Conte would be a huge blow

According to Spurs insider John Wenham, Conte was Fabio Paratici’s number one target to secure as Tottenham manager, so this news would come as a huge blow to the Italian.

Therefore, if Conte were to leave the club, it would not at all be surprising to see Paratici follow suit.

This would then be monumental for Spurs chief Daniel Levy, who has taken a step back from the footballing side of operations. Simultaneously having to find a new manager and club director would prove to be a mammoth task, which could end very poorly for the north London side in a summer where things need to go perfectly.

Worse than Eze: Arteta must drop 5/10 Arsenal flop who lost 75% duels

Arsenal can never make it easy for themselves.

Mikel Arteta’s side played host to Crystal Palace in the quarter-final of the League Cup on Tuesday night, with victory separating them from a two-legged semi-final with Chelsea.

However, while they looked likely to win by a wide margin in the first half, the North Londoners ended up needing penalties to get the job done.

It was a truly unusual game: while several Arsenal players put in commendable performances, a few let themselves down, including one who was even worse than the under-fire Eberechi Eze.

Arsenal's best performers vs Crystal Palace

Now, while it did almost end very badly for Arsenal, and there were a few players who let themselves down, it’s also true that the hosts were undoubtedly the better side.

One of the starters who played a massive role in the Gunners’ early dominance was Gabriel Martinelli.

The Brazilian winger rolled back the years in the first 45 minutes and looked like the dynamic game-changer who took the Premier League by storm in the 22/23 season.

Before coming off for Leandro Trossard, the 24-year-old completed three dribbles, created two big chances, played five key passes and had his opposite number on toast.

There is a strong argument to be made that he was as good as the man of the match, who happened to be William Saliba.

The Frenchman was brilliant on the night, constantly stepping into midfield to help with the build-up, and by the time the full whistle went, he had taken 97 touches and played 83 passes.

Moreover, while he didn’t score the goal, he played his role in it by moving one of the Palace players out of the way in the chaos preceding it.

The last two positives came in Christian Norgaard and Gabriel Jesus.

The former looked assured at the base of midfield, and while the latter was wasteful in the penalty area, he linked play brilliantly out of it.

However, while there were positives to take from Tuesday night for Arsenal, there were also a few negatives, including Eze and someone who was even more ineffective.

Arsenal's biggest underperformer vs Crystal Palace

Now, while he certainly wasn’t terrible on Tuesday night, Eze was once again fairly underwhelming.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

With Martinelli out on the left, Arteta opted to start the former Palace star in attacking midfield against his former club, and while the intent to make something happen was there, the execution was not.

It was another performance that left fans with the feeling that the 27-year-old is not someone who can run games from midfield, which doesn’t bode well for his game time, considering Martin Odegaard is back fit.

Unsurprisingly, the watching press were somewhat indifferent in their appraisals, with londonworld’s Toby Bryant awarding him just a 6/10 match rating at full-time.

However, there was another attacking player who left an even worse impression: Noni Madueke.

Bryant awarded the Englishman a 5/10 match rating, and while that might sound harsh, it really isn’t.

Sure, the former Chelsea man showed plenty of attacking intent and should be applauded for trying to make things happen, but time and time again against the Eagles, his moves led to nothing.

For example, in his 67 minutes of action, he completed just one dribble, misplaced 50% of his crosses, completed just 14 passes, lost the ball 14 times, and the fact that he took five shots without scoring a goal is a problem in and of itself.

Worse yet, Bukayo Saka replaced him and then went on to deliver 100% of his crosses and play three key passes in no time at all.

Ultimately, all that matters is that Arsenal are now in the semi-finals of the League Cup, although based on Tuesday night, Arteta should probably drop Eze and Madueke.

Sunderland need a spark claims Gabbiadini

Former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini believes manager Martin O’Neill needs to find a spark to kick-start the Black Cats’ season.

O’Neill’s side crashed out of the Capital One Cup to local rivals Middlesbrough last night and have won just one of their opening eight Premier League fixtures this season.

And Gabbiadini insists it is not time to panic but admits there is room for improvement and that a win is all that is needed to kick start Sunderland’s season.

He told TalkSport: “The issue is trying to find a win now. People will start saying we’re struggling, but I don’t think we’re getting dragged into a relegation fight yet.

“We don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water. We can defend well and don’t concede many, and struggling teams start by trying to get the back four right and we’ve already got that.

“People still believe in O’Neill, but we’re missing a key man in midfield who can take the game to teams.”

Gabbiadini went on to say that Sunderland are lacking creativity in the team and that performances have been “laboured at times.”

“The creativity is the biggest one O’Neill has to answer. If you look at the names on the team sheet, most people were quite excited about this season,” he added.

“He’s looking to play with two wide men who like taking their man and getting to the byline. But the big issue is how we raise the tempo.

Liverpool fans aren’t convinced by Demirbay move

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans have been reacting to the latest transfer rumour, and they don’t seem all too happy about the links to Kerem Demirbay.

According to Bild, Liverpool have sent scouts to watch Demirbay, who has been in superb form for Hoffenheim this season.

The 25 year-old has been linked with a move to Liverpool in the past, and the report claims Jurgen Klopp is a still a big fan.

The Reds have scored four goals in each of their last two games, but were definitely struggling for creativity before that.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”310054″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Fake Madrid & Ross Barkley Emulates… David Ngog”]

Philippe Coutinho was perfect for playing just off of the Reds’ ferocious front three, and the workhorse midfield of this season hasn’t quite given them the same service.

Demirbay could be the perfect fit for that advanced role on the left of Klopp’s midfield trio, but fans don’t seem too convinced.

Rangers: Commons’ Morelos prediction

Rangers could receive bids in the region of £10-15 million for Alfredo Morelos this summer, Kris Commons writes in his Scottish Daily Mail column.

The lowdown

Morelos is now into the final 18 months of his contract with the Ibrox outfit.

If Rangers can’t agree a new deal with the striker, this summer represents their last opportunity to cash in before he’s able to negotiate pre-contract terms with foreign clubs in January 2023.

The Daily Record’s Scott Burns has revealed that the 25-year-old has changed agents, potentially with a view to facilitating a big move.

Morelos has scored eight goals and provided four assists in 13 Scottish Premiership appearances since the start of December, compared to four goals and three assists in the previous 13 (via Transfermarkt).

He’s also produced some big moments in the UEFA Europa League, netting in the 4-2 victory away at Dortmund last month and in the recent 3-0 home win against Red Star Belgrade.

The latest

Commons sees similarities between Morelos’ situation and that of former Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard last year.

He says Morelos’ improved form, putting him ‘firmly back into the shop window’, could prove to be lucrative for Rangers.

Although, he thinks the Colombian might consider ‘sticking around’ if Champions League football is on offer at Ibrox next season.

“Maybe somewhere around the £10m-15m bracket,” he said (via Ibrox News). “With just 12 months left to go on his contract last summer, Odsonne Edouard was in the same position and Celtic sold him for £14m.

“That’s the sort of money Rangers could be looking at if Morelos maintains this form, which is a hell of a lot more than they looked like they would get for him just a few months ago.

“He might even commit himself to a new deal if he feels like sticking around at Ibrox under Van Bronckhorst. Winning the title and getting into the Champions League will be key to that.

“But there’s no doubt he has put himself firmly back into the shop window with some of his recent performances.”

The verdict

If Rangers receive a fee towards the upper end of Commons’ scale, then Morelos’ sale could be the biggest in their history.

The record currently stands at the initial £12.6million they received from Everton for right-back Nathan Patterson in January.

It would certainly be fitting given that Morelos is the club’s record scorer in European competition and has averaged more than one goal every two games (113 in 222) since he arrived five years ago.

Spurs prioritising Martinez ahead of Dybala

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is prioritising a move for Lautaro Martinez ahead of Paulo Dybala in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), who claim that the Spurs manager has decided the Inter Milan centre-forward is his preferred target at the end of the current campaign, with the 52-year-old said to have shelved his interest in a move for the soon to be out of contract Juventus forward as a result.

Conte can forget Dybala with Martinez

While it is true that a move for Dybala would more than likely be the cheaper option of the two signings, it is not difficult to understand why Conte would prefer to land Martinez ahead of the Juventus playmaker.

Firstly, the £63m-rated striker and the Tottenham boss already have a relationship, with the 24-year-old having scored an extremely impressive 40 goals and registered 19 assists over his 97 appearances under Conte at Inter Milan.

Secondly, 17 of these goals and ten of these assists came in the Nerazzurri’s Scudetto-winning campaign last time out, with the €125k-per-week (£105k-per-week) forward proving to be a key player in the Italian’s first-team squad.

Indeed, over the Argentina international’s 38 league outings in 2020/21, the player who Roberto Rojas dubbed an “absolute goal machine” averaged an incredibly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.17, ranking him as the Inter’s third-best player.

Furthermore, Tottenham’s need for a new centre-forward is much greater than their need for another attacking midfielder or winger, as, should the £220k-per-week Dybala indeed go on to join Spurs, he would be fighting with the likes of Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn for a starting spot in Conte’s side.

Lastly, considering the fact that Martinez is four years Dybala’s junior, the former is certain to have a much greater resale value further down the line.

As such, it would indeed appear wise for Tottenham to prioritise a move for the £70m Inter sensation ahead of the Juventus man who Antonio Cassano claimed is “not a champion” and “does not make the difference” this summer, as Martinez very much looks to be a much better fit for Conte’s side in almost every department.

Journalist makes Kubo to Celtic claim

Journalist Dan Orlowitz has made a transfer claim regarding Real Madrid winger Takefusa Kubo and Celtic.

The Lowdown: Kubo profiled

Kubo is primarily a right winger who can also play on the left or in an attacking midfield role.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-22/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 20-year-old joined Real Madrid back in 2019 and has since been out on loan with Villarreal, Getafe and now Mallorca.

He is out of contract at the Bernabeu in 2024 and has previously worked under Ange Postecoglou at Yokohama F. Marinos, and Orlowitz hasn’t ruled out a potential loan switch to Parkhead for the youngster.

The Latest: Orlowitz on Kubo and Celtic

Orlowitz took to Twitter on Thursday, sharing news of Takuhiro Nakai’s new deal with Real Madrid through to 2025.

He suggested that Nakai could make the step up to the first team before Kubo, with one Celtic fan hoping that Postecoglou takes a look at the latter. This is what Orlowitz had to say in reply, claiming that it might be some bit plausible:

“Ange already helped Kubo find his footing once during his half-season loan at Yokohama FM so this kind of isn’t the most insane idea.”

The Verdict: Unlikely…

The Hoops aren’t exactly short of options out wide after bringing in Kyogo Furuhashi, Liel Abada, Daizen Maeda and Jota under Postecoglou during his two transfer windows in charge.

Celtic also have the option to make Jota’s loan move permanent in the summer for £6.5m, and if they do, you’d expect that a temporary switch for Kubo could be unlikely.

However, it may well be one to keep an eye on due to the 20-year-old working with Postecoglou before, and after Orlowitz’s claim, concrete links might just surface ahead of the summer transfer window.

Tottenham: Gabby Agbonlahor reacts to Antonio Conte comments

Pundit Gabby Agbonlahor believes Tottenham’s players will be fuming with what he’s heard from Antonio Comte, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Inconsistency

The Italian is yet to really have a major impact at Spurs, with a number of inconsistent displays in recent weeks.

Tottenham failed to back up an impressive 3-2 win at Manchester City by falling to a 1-0 defeat to Burnley, with Conte venting his frustrations after the loss.

Spurs then got back to winning ways with a 4-0 win at Leeds but crashed out of the FA Cup days at Middlebrough. Conte revealed after that defeat that he has not questioned his ability to transform Spurs but there was a ‘strategy’ behind press conferences.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Agbonlahor reacts

Agbonlahor, who features on talkSPORT, was reacting after hearing those comments, per Football Insider. He claimed Conte’s antics have been ‘very strange’ and even said he needs to ‘shut up and get on with his job’.

“It’s just very strange.

“After the Burnley game, I was just confused by his reaction. If I was the owner I would give him a good telling off for that interview.

“Just shut up, you lost to Burnley and you won’t be the last team to do so. It’s a hard place to go, you lost from a set piece, get on with it.

“Then he’s happy as larry when they beat Leeds. He’s one of those managers who just moans, moans, moans when they lose and celebrate on the sidelines when you score.

“He just needs to shut up and get on with his job, to be honest.

“It would annoy me as a player. I’d be like ‘Gaffer, if we’re not all trying I understand. But we lost a game, it happens’.”

The Verdict: Crucial month

Spurs have a crucial month with four Premier League fixtures, two of which are against sides around them in the battle for a European place.

Should they manage to find some form and pick up four straight wins, starting against Everton on Monday, then you’d expect they would be back in the hunt for a top-four finish.

However, if Manchester United and West Ham inflict more woes on Conte, pressure will mount on the manager and Spurs could be completely out of the race for the top four, possibly resulting in more interesting comments from the Italian.
