Chanderpaul offers full value for Derbys

On a green pitch under a cloudy sky and with Andre Adams at last fit enough to return, there can have been little doubt in Chris Read’s mind about what to do when he won the toss. Bottom-of-the-table Derbyshire, the gap between themselves and the pack beginning to yawn just a little, have yet to bowl first in a Championship match this season and if skipper Wayne Madsen had secretly dreaded what might unfold you could hardly blame him.Yet after a day restricted by rain to 65 overs, Derbyshire are only two down. Madsen is well set alongside Shivnarine Chanderpaul in an attempt to reprise their record-breaking partnership against Surrey two weeks ago and the positive signs that coach Karl Krikken took from drawing that game might be more than wishful thinking. “The last couple of weeks we have started to compete and it’s not a foregone conclusion that we are going to go down,” he said. “There are nine games to go and we’ll keep fighting.”Much of Krikken’s renewed optimism stems from Chanderpaul’s enduring quality and professionalism. Approaching 39 and with pretty much every box ticked in his list of career ambitions, Chanderpaul is playing for his fourth county and his decision to sign a well-rewarded contract with a newly-promoted underdog might be open to cynical interpretation, yet Krikken could not be more insistent that Chanderpaul is giving maximum value. He made his first century for Derbyshire against Surrey and is on course for another here. After their stand of 265 against Surrey, they have put on 145 so far here, with Chanderpaul on 78 from 88 balls, and the Nottinghamshire attack feeling a little chastened. But Krikken says Chanderpaul is about more than runs.”He has been immense for us on the field but it is also his work-rate behind the scenes, with the youngsters in the squad in the nets,” Krikken said. “He is a great cricketer and the time he spends in the nets and the way he thinks about his game is what we want our younger players to emulate.”When you are playing on result wickets it is not easy but now we are getting some flatter wickets he is coming into his own. But he has not moaned at all because he knows we have to try to get results.”It is important to the team, to the younger players, to see your captain and your overseas player standing up to be counted, so their form has come at the right time.”In the earlier games we just weren’t consistent enough. We were having a good session but then throwing it away with a poor one and we know we can’t keep doing that. But in the last couple of weeks there have been signs that we are starting to compete.”Chanderpaul in his customary way gathered his runs with deceptive swiftness. He may not be flamboyant but his clever placement ensures steady singles and as ever he was able to gather boundaries through timing rather than force. It was a contrast from Chesney Hughes, who launched Derbyshire’s best start to an innings so far with gusto, his boundaries coming usually with a flourish. He had nine in his 59 and it was a shame that he paid the price for being too extravagant, mishitting an attempt to pull Harry Gurney to the ropes and cursing himself as the ball flew tamely to mid-off.At least Gurney could feel compensated. He had seen Hughes, on 48, and Godleman, with 19, dropped off consecutive balls by Samit Patel at slip.Adams picked up his sole reward when Godleman followed one outside off stump and gave Read a regulation catch but neither he nor any of his colleagues has found much in the pitch. The ball swung a little under the morning’s cloudy sky but for once here conditions have not been as read. Krikken admitted Derbyshire would have bowled first, too. Madsen, this time, will be pleased he did not have the choice.

'Facilities in Karnataka will produce more national players'

Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath are confident that the growing cricketing infrastructure around the state will help Karnataka win Ranji Trophy titles and produce more India cricketers

Former India bowlers Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath, who also hold top positions at the Karnataka State Cricket Association, are confident that the growing cricketing infrastructure around the state will help Karnataka win Ranji Trophy titles and produce more India cricketers. Both were speaking at a function in Bangalore to launch the platinum jubilee celebrations of the KSCA.Karnataka won the last of their six Ranji titles in 1998-99, winning three of those starting from the 1995-96. That era produced several cricketers who also featured for India, including Srinath, Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Venkatesh Prasad, Sunil Joshi, Vijay Bharadwaj and Dodda Ganesh. In recent years, the representation has reduced, with fast bowler Vinay Kumar the most favoured Karnataka player among the national selectors. The side came close to regaining the title in 2009-10, losing a tense final to Mumbai. The KSCA recently has spread the game to towns outside of Bangalore, hosting Ranji games in places like Shimoga, Mysore and Hubli and the spectator response has been encouraging. The team was knocked out in the quarter-finals last season but Kumble, the KSCA president, said there were positives to draw from the team’s performances in recent seasons.”The infrastructure has been put in place not just in Bangalore but other parts of Karnataka. It will take some time and I’m sure it will come up,” Kumble said. “We have a good, young team which had done exceptionally well in the last year. They came close, losing out to Saurashtra. It’s just the matter of one moment that you need to take to the cricket field in a difficult time. That’s something that with experience they will come good and hopefully this season we can win the Ranji Trophy.”Having said that, with all the infrastructure and the developments that have happened, I can assure you that in the years to come there will be a lot more victories to celebrate and greater representation in the Indian team as well from Karnataka.”Srinath, the KSCA secretary, said titles would come so long as players from across the state have access to similar facilities that are available within Bangalore.”Our objective has been to take the game to all the jurisdictions of KSCA. We need to replicate what we have in Mysore or Bangalore or even better,” Srinath told ESPNcricinfo. “The kids in and around these districts will have access to anything and everything. There is a uniformity in terms of infrastructure which is very crucial to us. Turf wickets are a must, we don’t believe in matting wickets.”Unless you have uniformity in infrastructure it’s going to be tough for us to expect the players to play the same kind of cricket.”Vinay is an example of an outstation player who has come made it to the national team and Srinath felt that the number of such players will only increase. “There is tremendous talent,” he said. “You normally have four to five guys from outside Bangalore and with this infrastructure I expect more people.”The KSCA has several events planned over the months as part of its celebrations, including a live discussion featuring Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Kapil Dev, Richard Hadlee, Sunil Gavaskar and Bishen Bedi, on August17. There will also be a discussion on club cricket in Karnataka, featuring Srinath, Dravid and author Ramachandra Guha.

Middlesex needed just 80 minutes to wrap up a ten-wicket win and condemn Sussex to their first defeat of the season in the County Championship. Luke Wright was last out for 161 as Sussex were dismissed for 310 in their second innings and the Middlesex openers knocked off their target of 44 in nine overs at Hove.Sussex led by just 21 runs overnight with Wright on 151 but Middlesex made inroads as soon as they took the second new ball. Tim Murtagh’s first delivery with it made the breakthrough when Chris Jordan edged a lifter to wicketkeeper John Simpson.Sussex lost their eighth wicket in the next over when Steve Magoffin wafted outside off stump on nought and Simpson again did the honours to reward Corey Collymore’s excellent line.James Anyon briefly gave Wright some support as the ninth wicket pair added a further 15 but Murtagh struck again with the score on 308 when Anyon was caught behind off another ball which lifted sharply off a length to give Simpson his eighth catch of the game. With only last man Monty Panesar for company, Wright tried to hit out but only succeeded in finding Neil Dexter on the long off boundary, having added ten runs to his overnight score. Wright’s 161 came off 185 balls with 24 boundaries and a six.Murtagh and Collymore both picked up three wickets while Steve Finn, deemed surplus to requirements by England at Lord’s, was not required to bowl today.Middlesex needed 44 to seal their fourth win of the season and Dawid Malan finished unbeaten on 19 and Sam Robson, whose first-innings 166 had done so much to set up their victory, was 18 not out.

Clarke, Faulkner in for Somerset match

To the tangible relief of the tour party, not to mention half of Australia, captain Michael Clarke is fit to play in his side’s first warm-up match ahead of the Investec Ashes Tests

To the tangible relief of the tour party, not to mention half of Australia, captain Michael Clarke is fit to play in his side’s first warm-up match ahead of the Investec Ashes Tests, while Darren Lehmann’s coaching residency has begun aggressively as promised with the selection of five bowlers.Clarke trained freely at the County Ground in Taunton on Tuesday morning, and vice-captain Brad Haddin said there had been no indication of the back trouble that forced Clarke to stay in London, away from the team, during a horrid and dysfunctional Champions Trophy tilt that sealed the fate of the former coach Mickey Arthur.”Michael’s playing,” Haddin said. “It’s great news, first game on tour and the Australian captain’s pretty excited. He’s in a good spot, he had a good catch and a bit of a net. It’s our first day on tour, and it’s not hard to get up for an Ashes campaign. This is the first day. If you can’t have a smile on your face and be excited about what lies ahead, you’re never going to be up for a cricket contest. Morale’s good.”Chris Rogers was made to wait another week for his chance to play for Australia once more, but Haddin said this was largely as a result of his abundance of time in the middle over recent months for Middlesex.”That’s the side we’ve decided to go for in this practice game, we’ve got another one just before the Test and it was important that we wanted to give this group a hit,” Haddin said. “It makes sense that Chris has been playing a lot of cricket over the last couple of months so he’s in pretty good touch.”James Faulkner’s inclusion is perhaps the most significant choice in the XI for the match against Somerset, as it opens up the possibility of Australia making full use of their major strength by choosing an extra bowler at the expense of a relatively mediocre collection of batsmen. Faulkner’s confidence and poise has impressed many members of the squad.”I’m not going to think about where I’m going to bat or bowl,” Faulkner said this week. “The games I’ve played so far in domestic cricket, I’ve batted everywhere, so it’s just a matter of when you get told where you’re batting you get your head around what your job is and do it the best you can. You don’t think about fifties or hundreds or five-fors or anything like that, just go out there and play your natural game and back your preparation.”I feel a bit of responsibility I suppose and in any game I play in as an allrounder, you know you’re going to be in the game and you know there’s going to be moments when you have to step up. There’s going to be times when things don’t go to plan as well.”Among Somerset’s XI will be Nick Compton, now effectively deposed as a Test opener by Joe Root’s selection ahead of him in England’s team for a pre-Ashes fixture against Essex. Not that this was any concern of Haddin. “I haven’t seen their squad and my job’s to make sure we’re ready to go tomorrow and get ourselves right for these first two practice games,” he said. “I’m not here to second guess who’s in their team and who’s not.”Ryan Harris and Jackson Bird were left out after their return from injuries for Australia A against Gloucestershire in Bristol, though there are no concerns over their fitness.Australians squad: Michael Clarke (capt), Ed Cowan, Usman Khawaja, Shane Watson, Phillip Hughes, James Faulkner, Brad Haddin (wk), Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon

Knight Riders continue fight for survival

Preview of the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors in Ranchi

The Preview by Nikita Bastian14-May-2013Match factsMay 15, 2013
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)Can Pune Warriors’ season get any worse?•BCCI

Big PictureIt’s hard for the average fan to find much significance in this game, but Kolkata Knight Riders would disagree. Their chances of progressing to the playoffs are mighty slim at the moment, but it’s still mathematically possible. And they have been keeping that flickering hope alive by winning their previous two matches, while others have done their bit for them, too – Mumbai Indians came from behind to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Kings XI Punjab, who are also trying to fight their way out of a very tight corner, handed Royal Challengers Bangalore their first defeat of the year at the Chinnaswamy stadium. Knight Riders have to win their remaining two matches now, and do it with as big a margin as possible to boost their net run rate, and hope Sunrisers and Royal Challengers keep losing.Knight Riders will be glad that one of their two upcoming must-wins is against Pune Warriors. Bottom-of-the-table Warriors have long since been out of this tournament, and have looked clueless more often than not. For them, this match is all about preventing their losing streak from extending into double digits: they have lost nine in a row since showing so much promise by beating Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. Considering they have lost 33 out of 44 IPL matches (10 wins, 1 no result) overall, and 21 off the previous 23, any victory however insignificant would be most welcome.Form guideKolkata Knight Riders: WWLWL (most recent first)
Pune Warriors: LLLLLIn the spotlightHow will the pitch at the JSCA International Stadium play? On IPL debut, the Ranchi track proved to be quite hard for Knight Riders and Royal Challengers to handle, with the latter scratching to 115 for 9 before the ‘hosts’ got across the line with only four balls to spare. While Murali Kartik said it was difficult to judge with its slowness and two-paced nature, Jacques Kallis said the surface wasn’t quite fit for T20 cricket. Even Royal Challengers franchise owner Siddharth Mallya was critical of the pitch, tweeting “The JSCA int’ stadium in Ranchi is simply outstanding…Best in India after Chinnaswamy by far…Shame about the wicket tho…” But curator Shyam Bahadur Singh, while defending the pitch, has confirmed that the same strip will be used on Wednesday; the teams, and the fans in Ranchi, will be hoping it plays a bit better this time round.Stats and trivia Pune Warriors’ win/loss ratio in the IPL is a woeful 0.30. That’s far worse than even the two now-defunct franchises, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Deccan Chargers, who had ratios of 0.75 and 0.63 respectively After four matches, Warriors are yet to beat Knight Riders Fourteen games into their season, none of the Knight Riders batsmen have an average of 30 or more (three matches minimum)Quotes”Today we didn’t make enough runs. Last match we went for too many runs in the death. It’s a mixture of a lot of things.”
“Be it any situation, we as a team enter the ground thinking about a victory. We do not play to participate.”
