Bangladesh sports advisor won't 'allow Shakib to wear the Bangladesh jersey' again

Shakib Al Hasan will not play for Bangladesh again, the country’s sports advisor Asif Mahmud has declared, after the cricketer put up a social media post on Sunday wishing deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina on her birthday. It started with Shakib posting a simple message, to which Asif responded – though not with Shakib’s name – with: “All of you have abused me a lot for not rehabilitating one person. But I was right. End of the discussion.”Shakib went next, posting: “So someone has finally accepted that it’s because of him that I can never put on the Bangladesh jersey again, because of whom I can’t play for Bangladesh again. Maybe I will return to my motherland one day. Love you, Bangladesh.”There were more messages out in public, before Asif spoke to the Dhaka-based , saying he would instruct the BCB not to select Shakib again. He said that Shakib was “intricately involved with Awami League’s politics”.”We cannot let him carry the Bangladesh flag,” Asif said. “It won’t be possible for me to allow him to wear the Bangladesh jersey. Maybe I haven’t told the BCB before, but now my clear direction for the BCB would be that Shakib Al Hasan can never again play for Bangladesh.”The number of times he has asked to enter the country, to play for Bangladesh, he had said that the Awami League had given him the [2024 general election] nomination forcibly. He claimed that he was not involved in politics. He wanted to become an MP to work for the people of his area [Magura]. The truth, however, is that he is intricately involved in Awami League’s politics.”Shakib claimed that he had wished Hasina since they had known each other before he had joined politics and that the post wasn’t intended to instigate anyone.”She [Hasina] has always followed cricket seriously – isn’t that right,” he said. “She was deeply involved with cricket. We had a relationship through that, even before politics. I wished her from that point of view. There was no other motive, or trying to instigate anyone.”Shakib was an Awami League member of parliament from January to August last year before the government was ousted in a student-led revolution. Hasina fled to India on August 5, while Shakib, who was not in the country at the time, hasn’t returned home. He played Tests against Pakistan and India last year, but has not been picked in the national team in the last 12 months even as he has continued to play in franchise leagues elsewhere.

Shohei Ohtani Was All Class Describing Francisco Lindor During Mets-Dodgers NLCS

Shohei Ohtani sees similarities between himself and Francisco Lindor.

The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar was asked about the New York Mets shortstop on Tuesday, one day before Game 3 of the National League Championship Series, and opened by complimenting him. Then he claimed he felt the two of them were on the same level as far as leading their teams in the MLB playoffs.

"My impression of him is that he's a really good guy. He smiles a lot. I do feel like he's leading his club as well," Ohtani said.

"Both of us are in this position, what we did in the regular season is over. What matters is what we produce during the postseason. I do feel like we're perhaps connected in the same sense."

Ohtani clearly has a lot of admiration for Lindor and sees them as being in similar situations

For his part, Lindor said he really like's Ohtani's cleats.

Both players had great seasons, but Ohtani is expected to win the National League MVP award, likely unanimously. He fished the season slashing .310/.390/.646, with an OPS of 1.036, 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases, becoming the first 50/50 player in MLB history. Lindor had quite a season himself, slashing .273/.344/.500 with 33 home runs and 91 RBIs. He helped lead the Mets' furious second-half charge to the postseason.

The Dodgers and Mets enter Game 3 tied at 1-1, and how their two MVP candidates perform could dictate who wins the series.

Siraj fined and handed demerit point for Duckett wicket celebration

“After the dismissal, Siraj celebrated close to the batter in his follow-through and made contact as Duckett began his walk back,” the ICC said in a statement

Mohammed Siraj’s animated reaction after dismissing Ben Duckett, which included a bump of bodies as the batter walked back, has earned him a 15% match-fee fine as well as a demerit point – his second in a 24-month period.Tempers had flared on the third evening of the ongoing third Test at Lord’s when the Indians appeared aggrieved at Duckett’s opening partner Zak Crawley’s attempts at what they felt was time-wasting. Duckett fell pulling Siraj to mid-on fifth over of the fourth morning, and Siraj’s celebrations including a few roars, staring and shouting in Duckett’s direction, and, as they got close to one another, a brush of bodies. And ICC statement spelt it out, saying, “After the dismissal, Siraj celebrated close to the batter in his follow-through and made contact as Duckett began his walk back to the Lord’s long room”.That meant a breach of Article 2.5 of the ICC’s code of conduct for international players, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal”.

“It’s just very competitive, isn’t it? There’s always lines that you’ve got to be wary not to cross, and I think both teams are very passionate about playing the game and winning,” Marcus Trescothick, England’s batting coach, told BBC’s when asked about the heat between the two teams.”It’s a big series for everyone to be involved in. It’s understandable at times that tempers are going to get to boiling point, and things will be said, and things happen amongst the two teams. We’re comfortable with it. We give as much as we get. Those moments that happen, and people pick up on TV, it just adds for more people to come back and view the game.”The second demerit point means Siraj has to be careful going forward, since four or more demerit points within a 24-month period are converted into suspension points and a player is banned. As things stand, India need a further 135 runs and England six wickets at Lord’s to go 2-1 up in the five-match series.

Man Utd have signed a "machine" who looks like a new Bruno-type player

Despite yet another season filled with turmoil under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United went into the international break on the back of a win. The Red Devils ran out 2-0 winners over Sunderland last time out, thanks to goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko.

United supporters will be hoping this can be a catalyst for their season to get underway. Things have still never really got going under Amorim, who has struggled to make an impact in almost a year in charge.

With Liverpool their next opponent after the international break, United will be looking to win back-to-back games under their Portuguese boss for the first time.

As is so often the case, Bruno Fernandes will be someone they will heavily rely on.

Fernandes’ biggest moments under Amorim

As you might expect, United’s talismanic midfielder has been one of Amoirm’s key players during the 11 months or so he’s been at Old Trafford.

Often deploying Fernandes in a pivot in midfield has meant he is further away from goal, causing some controversy, with Paul Scholes claiming “he’s not got the discipline” to play there.

Yet, the United number eight has still managed to put up some impressive goal and assist numbers under his countryman, despite the deeper role.

In 43 games with Amorim as United’s boss, their captain has 17 goals and 12 assists to his name.

It’s hard to pinpoint his best contribution during Amoirm’s tenure. In European football, he scored and assisted ten goals in 11 games as United reached the Europa League final last term.

That included a magnificent hat-trick against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, to guide United into the quarter-final.

He was one of the best creators in that competition last season, too. Fernandes’ 3.09 key passes and expected assist tally of 0.36xA saw him rank in the top 2% of attacking midfielders in the Europa League.

United will need someone to share that goalscoring and creative burden with Fernandes, but they signed someone of the same ilk this summer.

The new United star who's looking like Fernandes

It was certainly an expensive summer for the Red Devils, with INEOS willing to splash the cash. They spent roughly £200m to improve their front three.

Sesko has already scored twice, and Matheus Cunha has suffered an injury, but impressed when he’s played.

However, the most exciting of United’s new forwards this season would surely have to be Bryan Mbeumo. The Cameroonian star joined the Red Devils from Brentford for a fee reportedly worth £65m up front.

It has been a fast start to life in Red for the attacker. Playing as one of Amorim’s number 10s in the infamous 3-4-2-1 system he deploys, the 26-year-old has scored twice and assisted once in eight appearances so far.

His first Premier League strike for the Red Devils was against Burnley before the last international break.

It is easy to see how the former Brentford star can shoulder the burden of creativity and goals at United and become the new Bruno-style player in Amorim’s side.

As Statman Dave said, he is the “complete package” going forward, and offers so much to the Mancunian giants in attacking areas. Like Fernandes, he is an “output machine”, in the words of content creator Ronaldo Brown.

The other way to tell just how similar Mbeumo will be to his captain is by looking at his underlying stats from the 2024/25 Premier League.

For example, last term he averaged 1.85 key passes for the Bees, which put him in the top 6% of Premier League forwards.

It has been hugely important for United to assess the lack of attacking prowess in the squad, aside from Fernandes’ contribution.

Loaning Marcus Rashford to Barcelona drastically reduced their threat in the final third, especially with how well he’s performing in La Liga.

Yet, the addition of Mbeumo has been a huge benefit. The United number 19 can help shoulder some of Fernandes’ attacking, and has already hit the ground running in that famous Red shirt.

Better than Guehi: Liverpool dreaming of signing "best U21 player in the PL"

Liverpool, in many ways, are evidence of money not being everything in football. The club had always spent wisely when led by Jurgen Klopp, cashing in for big money and carefully picking budding talents to develop into superstars.

This summer, having won the Premier League so spectacularly with Arne Slot last year, FSG felt it was the right time to hit the big button and indulge in a spending spree. Many high-level signings have arrived at Anfield.

However, Liverpool may still be frustrated to have missed out on Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, especially now that Giovanni Leoni has been ruled out for a year with a knee injury.

Liverpool may well return for the England defender, but Guehi isn’t the only Premier League talent they plan to bid for in 2026.

Liverpool still interested in Premier League star

There’s no question that Liverpool need to reinforce their central defence next year. However, Slot might also feel his midfield needs some work. Tactical imbalances have knocked the Reds out of kilter.

That’s why FSG dream of signing Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton next summer, retaining an interest in the England international. That’s according to the Daily Mail, who believe the Eagles hope to tie the 21-year-old down to a new deal to ward off persistent suitors.

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton

Valued at £75m, Wharton has been a revelation at Selhurst Park, instrumental under Oliver Glasner.

Liverpool will be confident that they can secure the maestro’s signature, but his performances have also attracted the likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

The competition is thick, but this is a player worth pushing for. It might even prove to be a signing that eclipses all others the Merseysiders could make, even landing Guehi.

What Adam Wharton would bring to Liverpool

Described as “the best U21 player in the Prem” by one analyst, Wharton has been exceptional since joining Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers for £22m in February 2024.

England's Anthony Gordon, AdamWharton, Cole Palmer and Kobbie Mainoo during training

A master of the pass and tenacious when winning the ball back, Wharton has played 53 times for his London-based club, nestled in the centre of the park.

He has been vital in constructing an enviable style of play, Glasner utilising him as an all-encompassing engine.

Palace have not the same calibre of firepower in the final third as some of the Premier League’s biggest hitters, but they aren’t half bad in front of goal.

Much of this stems from slick build-up play from midfield, and Wharton has been at the very heart of this, with no player matching his five big chances created so far.

As per FBref, the Three Lions star ranks among the top 6% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues for through balls and the top 7% for shot-creating actions per 90.

Liverpool are suffering from a degree of isolation between the thirds right now. This has been accentuated blindingly by Alexis Mac Allister’s poor form.

And that’s why Wharton could be such an incredible addition, opening up a dimension and weaving together the disjointed midfield and frontline parts.

Liverpool have an elite group of players capable of dominating English and European football for many years. But something is missing, to be sure, and a player of Wharton’s style could work wonders in easing the midfield load on Ryan Gravenberch’s shoulders and restore the title-winning fluidity that worked so well last season.

Chelsea hit gold on "exceptional" ace worth way more than Simons & Garnacho

It’s been an exhausting but brilliant summer for Chelsea so far this year.

On top of blowing everyone away at the Club World Cup and coming home as World Champions, the Blues have been as busy as ever in the transfer market.

The likes of Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap have all come in to bolster Enzo Maresca’s attacking options, while Jorrel Hato has finally made his way to the big time and looks destined for greatness.

Chelsea's Reece James lifts the trophy as he celebrates withChelseamanager Enzo Maresca and teammates after winning the FIFA Club World Cup

However, even with all the business they’ve already conducted, there are no signs of the West Londoners slowing down anytime soon.

In fact, they now look dead set on signing Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons, although the pair will have to hit the ground running to see their valuations get anywhere near one of their soon-to-be teammates.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

Why Chelsea want to sign Garnacho & Simons

It was confirmed by transfers expert Fabrizio Romano early yesterday morning that Chelsea have agreed personal terms with Garnacho and that they’re also looking to sign Simons at some point before the window slams shut.

Based on reports from earlier in the window, it looks like the former could end up costing the club at least £40m, while the latter appears to have a price tag of around £61m, taking the overall price of the pair to £101m.

It’s undoubtedly a lot of money to spend on two young players, but once you look past the enormous sums of money, it’s not hard to see why the Conference League champions want to add them both to their squad.

For example, despite being 20 years old for the entire campaign, and playing for a historically terrible Manchester United side, the Argentine international managed to rack up a tally of 11 goals and ten assists in 58 appearances, totalling 3,568 minutes – an average of a goal involvement every 2.76 games, or every 169.90 minutes.

The RB Leipzig star did even better than that, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists in 33 games, totalling just 2763 minutes, which comes out to a sensational average of a goal involvement every 1.73 games, or every 144 minutes.

On top of their brilliant output, both players are positively versatile and can thrive in attacking midfield or out on the wing, which would give Maresca so many tactical options ahead of games next season.

Overall, it’s easy to see why Chelsea want to sign Simons and Garnacho and why they could cost so much, but even then, they’d have to hit the ground running to see their valuations even get close to someone already in the Blues’ squad.

The Chelsea star worth millions more than Simons & Garnacho

While Chelsea have certainly made their fair share of mistakes in the transfer market over the last few years, and received plenty of criticism for doing so, they’ve now got a squad bursting with incredible players, none more so than Cole Palmer.

Yes, it should come as no surprise that the star in question is the mercurial Englishman, as he’s undoubtedly been one of the best players in the entire Premier League since moving to Stamford Bridge two years ago.

His consistently sensational displays have seen his valuation soar as well, with the CIES Football Observatory pricing him at up to €157m, which comes out to £136m, or £35m more than Simons and Garnacho could cost combined.

While that is an outrageous number to place on a 23-year-old’s head, it would be hard to say he hasn’t earned it over the last couple of campaigns.

For example, in his first season with the West Londoners, the “exceptional” talent, as Pep Guardiola dubbed him, scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists in 45 appearances, totalling 3613 minutes.

That comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.12 games, or every 90.32 minutes, and he did almost as well last season.

In 52 appearances, totalling 4247 minutes, the game-changing international scored 18 goals and provided 14 assists, which came out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.62 games, or every 132.71 minutes.

Ultimately, while Simons and Garnacho will be great additions to this Chelsea team, we don’t think they’ll ever quite see their valuations rival Palmer’s.

Martin Keown fires back at 'deranged' Peter Schmeichel after Man Utd legend's claim that Arsenal play 'ugly' football under Mikel Arteta

Martin Keown has fired back at "deranged" Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel for claiming that Arsenal play "ugly" football under Mikel Arteta. Schmeichel was critical of Arsenal's style of play in their 1-0 loss to Premier League champions Liverpool before the international break, homing in on their "annoying" focus on set-pieces.

Keown hits back at SchmeichelUnited legend slammed Arteta's styleArsenal beaten by LiverpoolFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱AFPWHAT HAPPENED?

Following Arsenal's 1-0 loss to Liverpool in August, Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane were among those to raise questions over the Gunners' style of play under Arteta. Schmeichel was also critical of the Spanish coach as he labelled the Gunners' style of football "ugly" and "annoying" and admitted he wanted Liverpool to win the clash.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Now, Arsenal icon Keown has hit back at Schmeichel, claiming that the former Denmark goalkeeper's comments were "deranged". The ex-England defender did, however, admit that Arteta's side need to change their mentality to win the Premier League this season.

WHAT KEOWN SAID

Speaking on , the 59-year-old said: "We want more. Arsenal I feel now are at the stage where it’s a mentality change, they need to change gear, they’ve really got to go after it. You’ve got to have the eye of the tiger to really go and win these games. Looking back, I hope we don’t regret it, but it’s too early in the season to write Arsenal off.

"I don’t know if it’s been calm in the media. I’ve listened to some people, sometimes these ex-players like Peter Schmeichel has said that Arsenal bring something “ugly” to the Premier League. I think that’s deranged, what's he talking about."

Keown added: "Was it they changed the back-pass rule in 1992 because it was him [Schmeichel] that was one of the advocates of that? Everyone kept passing it back to him, that was ugly as well. Arsenal are a long way down the line to being successful. I think Arsenal look good right now. It’s not lucky Arsenal anymore, by the way, with all these injuries. That will clear up and they’ve now got a squad to go the distance, but Liverpool are still ahead."
