Dottin and Flintoff lead Renegades to derby win over Stars

At the end of Sunday’s action, Melbourne Renegades have climbed to second place behind Hobart Hurricanes, while Perth Scorchers have risen to fourth place

AAP16-Nov-2025Tess Flintoff’s clutch, late hitting cut the tension as Melbourne Renegades toppled Melbourne Stars in the WBBL’s derby on Sunday at Junction Oval.Chasing 142 for victory, Flintoff (17 in nine balls) held her nerve with a six, four and four off Annabel Sutherland’s penultimate over to clinch the win with four wickets and seven balls to spare.Stars had given themselves every chance with some tight bowling after Courtney Webb (37) and Sophie Molineux (32) had put the defending champions on track.Needing a-run-a-ball in the final four overs, both Deandra Dottin and Georgia Wareham holed out to heap the pressure on the lower order. But, needing 12 off ten balls, Flintoff was up to the task against her former club.First she split two leg-side fielders with a swipe that hit the rope before hammering a back-foot drive over cover to level the scores. Victory came courtesy of a sweetly-timed drive over mid-off to put Renegades (3-1) into second behind the unbeaten Hobart Hurricanes (3-0).Earlier, Meg Lanning (3) recorded a rare failure, leaving Sutherland (29) and Marizanne Kapp (22) to pilot Stars’ innings before Kim Garth’s (29 off 19) late hitting. Dottin, with 3 for 20 in three overs, took the last three wickets and was later named the Player of the Match.Devine three-for takes Scorchers past Strikers in rain-hit gameSophie Devine’s intervention took Adelaide Strikers apart before the heavens opened up to hand Perth Scorchers a dominant WBBL win in Melbourne on Sunday.

The veteran New Zealand allrounder took 3 for 12, including a peach to dismiss danger batter Tahlia McGrath first ball. Her delivery shaped into McGrath’s pads, before straightening off the pitch and clipping the top of middle stump.Strikers never recovered, bowled out for 112, with Ellie Johnston, who was the only batter to find rhythm in her 33 in 21 balls, run out.Devine was at the crease when rain arrived, with Scorchers 55 for 2 in the tenth over. The match was abandoned and a nine-run victory declared for Scorchers.Form batter Beth Mooney was dismissed first ball but opening partner Katie Mack (24 not out in 30 balls) put Scorchers in a winning position, making the most of a missed stumping chance off Sophie Ecclestone earlier in her innings.

'Stuck to my batting template' – Powell celebrates 100th T20I with match-winning knock

He capped the occasion with an unbeaten 44 that earned him the Player-of-the-Match award

Rovman Powell marked his 100th T20I in style, sticking to his “batting template” of a late surge to guide West Indies to a 16-run win over Bangladesh in the first T20I in Chattogram. On Monday, he became only the third West Indian to reach the milestone of 100 games, capping the occasion with an unbeaten 44 that earned him the Player-of-the-Match award.Powell, however, didn’t make a great start to his innings against Bangladesh. He couldn’t time the ball properly, striking just one four as he made 18 runs off his first 22 balls. It was in the 19th over when Powell finally struck his first six – a mow across the line against Mustafizur Rahman. Then, when he got the strike in the final over, he hammered Tanzim Hasan for three sixes in a row, ending up unbeaten on 44 off 28 balls. He made 26 runs in his last six balls. The late momentum took West Indies to 165 for 3 in 20 overs, before their bowlers helped dismiss Bangladesh for 149.Related

Seales and Hosein boss powerplay as West Indies go 1-0 up

“I am very happy,” Powell said. “It is not always that someone gets to play 100 T20Is, especially for West Indies. It shows the hard work that I have done in the duration of my career. A lot of credit goes to my family and friends, and the players with whom I have played these 100 matches. It is very special to get Man-of-the-Match award in my 100th game.”I think it’s a batting template that I have used in the last year or two. I have had good success with it. I try to get a start and get into the last five overs when I try to hit as many sixes as possible.”Powell also noted that heavy dew affected the West Indies’ bowling effort. He added that they would have felt pressure had Bangladesh kept wickets in hand towards the end of the 166-run chase.”If one of the main Bangladeshi batters had stayed at the wicket for longer, we would have been under pressure,” he said. “It was very wet in the end. Having said that, a lot of the credit goes to our bowlers. They stuck to their plans and picked up wickets at critical times.”We had information about the ground but we didn’t know it would get this wet. Maybe that’s something that we keep in consideration.”Instead, Bangladesh lost four wickets in the powerplay and lost all their frontline batters by the 12th over. Fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib top-scored for Bangladesh, making 33 runs.Tanzim said that Bangladesh could have done with a better powerplay and with specialist batters in the final overs.”Of course, when there was dew, the ball came on to the bat more easily,” Tanzim said. “If we had one set batsman at that stage, the game would’ve been much easier. In the last couple of overs, a settled batsman always keeps you in the game. We lost four wickets in the powerplay. Even if it had been two, the chase could still have been managed.”Powell, meanwhile, looked forward to a series win for West Indies on Wednesday. He said that they have the opportunity to get over their recent T20I record – they have lost their last seven T20I bilateral series – if they can win the second game against Bangladesh to clinch the series.”Whatever the stats say, it doesn’t leave a good taste in our mouth. Myself and the guys are eager to turn that around. Being 1-0 up against Bangladesh will provide the opportunity for us to turn it around. Bangladesh are a tough side at home. We will see if we can continue improving to win the series in the next game.”.

0 tackles, 0 duels won: Celtic man was just as bad as Ralston v Midtjylland

Celtic took on FC Midtjylland on Thursday evening. One of these clubs is a former European champion; a UEFA Cup finalist as recently as 2003. You wouldn’t have thought it was the team in green and white.

Yes, the trip to Denmark saw the Hoops’ season reach yet another low following a dismal 3-1 defeat in the Europa League, with a late Reo Hatate consolation doing little to help lift the mood among Martin O’Neill’s side.

It was men against boys stuff at the MCH Arena, in truth, evoking memories of last season’s humiliation at the hands of Borussia Dortmund, with the home side scoring three times in an eight-minute first-half blitz.

From the highs of Sunday’s extra-time triumph over rivals Rangers, the Parkhead outfit were very much brought crashing back down to earth, with such a display only heightening the need to wrap up this ongoing managerial search sooner rather than later.

It was a night in which anything that could go wrong did go wrong, a fact epitomised by the sight of Hampden hero Callum Osmand being stretchered off late on, cruelly cutting short what had been a lively cameo from the teenage striker.

Until that abrupt withdrawal, Osmand had been perhaps the only positive for O’Neill and co, coming amid a string of otherwise dour performances – including from a certain Anthony Ralston.

Ralston's game in numbers vs Midtjylland

The unfortunate blow of losing the ex-Fulham forward has further emphasised just how depleted Celtic are right now, with the Scottish champions faced with a raft of key absentees to add to their growing woes.

Indeed, there remains no Cameron Carter-Vickers, nor Jota. No Kelechi Iheanacho or Alistair Johnston. On the evidence of Ralston’s Danish display, the return of the latter man can’t come soon enough.

That may appear a harsh assessment for a player who has been a solid servant since his surprise rise under Ange Postecoglou, although the right-back’s shortcomings were brutally exposed amid the first-half onslaught last night.

The Scotland international was notably at fault for the home side’s second of the night, having almost watched as the impressive Mikel Gorgoza skipped past him, before curling a delightful effort into the far corner.

On the receiving end of an undoubtedly debatable handball call at the weekend, Ralston’s luck doesn’t seem to be in right now, with his woes also evident as he lost the ball on nine occasions from his 55 touches, while boasting a limp 79% pass accuracy, as per Sofascore.

While the typically committed full-back did win four of his five tackles, there was little in the way of any attacking impetus, having failed to even provide a single key pass or cross on the night, nor attempt a single dribble.

Limited would be the word to describe the 26-year-old, unfortunately, with the Glasgow giants desperately in need of Johnston’s return before too long.

That’s not to say Ralston was the only villain in Denmark, however, with issues cropping up all across the park.

How Celtic were let down by experienced faces

Scrutiny over the club’s new faces or emerging talents, be it Benjamin Nygren or Johnny Kenny, is no doubt justified following the limp showing of the pair in midweek, although much of the criticism should be centred around O’Neill’s core of experienced figures.

Indeed, while having had little chance with any of the three goals, Kasper Schmeichel was again somewhat erratic when playing out from the back, with that also the word to use for summer returnee, Kieran Tierney, as the struggling star notably lost the ball on 14 occasions from his left-back berth.

Long-serving hero, James Forrest, meanwhile, was hooked at the break having repeatedly run into trouble when cutting in from the right flank, albeit with perhaps the biggest frustration having been the performance of skipper Callum McGregor at the base of the midfield.

So often the shining light for Celtic, as he was at Hampden just a matter of days ago, McGregor at his best is central to everything good about the team, pulling the strings in metronomic fashion from his deep-lying berth.

Unfortunately, this latest outing was far from the captain in his pomp, with much of the away side’s woes stemming from the Scotsman’s inability to dictate proceedings, having been no match for the physicality of the towering opposition.

Up against the likes of ex-Bournemouth star Philip Billing, McGregor simply couldn’t get a foothold in the game, failing to make a single tackle or win any of his five attempted duels, while being dribbled past twice.

In an attacking sense too, the 32-year-old was also found wanting, having failed to successfully complete a single dribble or cross, while losing the ball on ten occasions from just 41 touches.

For a man who has averaged 81.8 touches per game in the Premiership this season, as per Sofascore, such a drop off only serves to emphasise his struggles, with the typically reliable midfielder enduring a real off night in truth.

At a time of so much chaos and uncertainty surrounding the club, O’Neill – or his permanent successor – are in need of figures like McGregor to step up to the plate.

As Thursday’s outing showcased, however, he is currently the captain of something of a sinking ship.

INEOS aren't messing around: Man Utd readying £87m bid for "unbelievable" star

Manchester United are now preparing a £87m offer for an “unbelievable” forward, who has amassed 11 goals and assists already this season.

Man Utd keen on new forward despite Mbeumo's impressive start

Off the back of scoring 20 Premier League goals for Brentford last season, Bryan Mbeumo was expected to make an instant impact at Man United, and the forward has certainly made an impressive start, most recently scoring against Liverpool.

The Cameroonian opened the scoring for United after just over one minute, coolly slotting past Giorgi Mamardashvili after being played through by Amad Diallo, with Ruben Amorim’s side going on to pick up a statement 2-1 victory courtesy of a late Harry Maguire winner.

Mbeumo is not the only summer signing who has started to catch the eye in recent weeks, as Benjamin Sesko has found his feet, with the Slovenian finding the back of the net in both the 2-0 victory over Sunderland and 3-1 defeat against Brentford.

With Matheus Cunha also arriving at Old Trafford in the summer, Amorim has plenty of options in attacking areas, but another forward is of interest, with an ambitious move being planned.

Indeed, INEOS certainly aren’t messing around, with a report from Spain revealing Man United are now preparing an offer of around €100m (£87m) for former player Mason Greenwood, who has made an impressive start to the season with Marseille.

£62m Man Utd star looks like their best player "since Fergie retired"

Marseille would be willing to sanction a departure for the right fee, with United reportedly setting a deadline of the summer transfer window for the Ligue 1 side to agree to their terms, and the Red Devils retain a 50% sell-on fee of any sale, which would lower the cost.

Greenwood shouldn't even be considered by Man Utd

Amorim will be hoping the 2-1 victory at Anfield can be a turning point in the season, with the manager finally winning two Premier League games on the spin, and the 40-year-old is likely to have won plenty of fans around courtesy of the victory over United’s bitter rivals.

Alternatively, signing the 24-year-old would be an incredibly divisive decision, given the way in which he left United, so a move should not even be considered, despite the Englishman’s fantastic start to the campaign, chipping in with 11 goal contributions across all competitions.

Instead of signing their former academy graduate, who Nicky Butt once described as “unbelievable”, the Red Devils could look to sign Real Madrid’s Endrick, with it recently being revealed they are readying a January loan move for the young Brazilian.

However, given the start Mbeumo has made to the season, it would not be the end of the world if United missed out on the signature of another new forward, and Amorim will be hoping the 26-year-old can continue his impressive form against Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot appears to aim face-to-face dig at Wayne Rooney over Man Utd legend's managerial record

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot seemed to aim a subtle dig at Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney on air during the post-match coverage of the Reds' win over Real Madrid in the Champions League. As part of Amazon Prime's post-match discussions, Slot was quizzed on Liverpool's recent struggles. The Dutchman gave a hilarious response and could not resist a sideways look at Rooney in the process.

  • Rooney critical of Liverpool

Rooney has been very vocal about Liverpool's struggles this season. As part of his podcast, 'The Wayne Rooney Show', he has previously accused the Premier League champions of lacking leadership after they went on a four-game winless run in the top flight, a comment captain Virgil van Dijk also called him out on.

Rooney had previously doubled down on his comments, saying: "Virgil van Dijk’s similar to [Mohamed] Salah, you know, over the last five years he’s been one of, if not the best defender in the world, and last year it was hard to say anything bad because they were that good, and he was that good.

"I’m sure he’ll come out and tell you, he probably hasn’t been at his best this season, if he’s honest with himself. And as captain, your job as captain if things aren’t going right, is to speak to your team-mates, call meetings with your team-mates, and that’s really what I was saying. You know, as a captain, as a leader, I’m sure he will have been doing that.

"I've got full respect for Virgil. I think he's a fantastic player. My job now as a pundit is to give my opinions on what I feel. I'm sure if you ask him or Arne Slot, he probably hasn't been as good as he has been over the last few years. That was my comment which I stick by."

Slot's subtle dig in post-match celebrations

Liverpool appear to have overcome their sticky patch under Slot, recording back-to-back wins against Aston Villa and Real Madrid. And with Rooney on punditry duties with Amazon on Tuesday night, he got the chance to speak with both Van Dijk and Slot after the match against Los Blancos. The Reds boss was asked whether the mood has lifted on Merseyside, to which Slot responded: "It’s clear that it’s nicer when you win games than when you lose games as a manager. Am I right or am I wrong heh?"

When making the comment, Slot turned sideways to look at Rooney with a big smile on his face, in an apparent dig at the Englishman's poor managerial record. Since retiring, the Red Devils icon has taken charge of Derby, D.C. United, Birmingham and Plymouth. His highest points average since venturing into management is just 1.18, and his most recent stint at Plymouth saw him leave the club after only seven months. Since then, Rooney has engrossed himself in the media, starting up his podcast with the BBC and making regular appearances as a pundit.

  • Alexander-Arnold's sour return to Anfield

Rooney was not the only person met with hostility at Anfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold made his eagerly anticipated return to his boyhood club with Madrid, and the red half of Merseyside made sure to make their feelings known, with loud boos ringing around the stadium when he was introduced as a substitute late on. The defender looked to shake off the hostile welcome back to his home city, but could not help his side pick up a result as he headed back to Madrid dejected alongside his team-mates after the 1-0 defeat.

Inevitably, Slot shared a moment with the former Red on the pitch at full-time, and was then asked about what was said in his post-match press conference. He said: "He (Alexander-Arnold) lost so that is tough. I said something like 'keep going' to him. I honestly didn't know exactly what I said to him. He has been special to this club, he has been special to me. And he is a special human being. So, for me to give him a hug is something I will do every single time I see him."

    Liverpool ready for Man City

As if a clash against Spanish giants Madrid was not enough, Liverpool must now travel to Manchester City this weekend in the Premier League. A win against Erling Haaland and Co would be the perfect way for the Reds to prove they are back on track after a wobbly start, and perhaps still alive in the title race after all.

Former Chelsea player now wants to leave major club with Man Utd leading £52m race

Planning ahead for 2026, Manchester United are now reportedly among the clubs leading the way in the race to sign a want-away star in a deal worth over £50m.

Man Utd's 2026 transfer targets

It’s no surprise that Man United are already thinking about 2026 targets. INEOS still have plenty to do before the Red Devils are an established top four team again and that starts with the next transfer window. Having already spent around £200m in the summer too, there’s little doubt that they’re willing to back Ruben Amorim.

Those at Old Trafford will be hoping to see Senne Lammens, Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo all come good this season in what would hand Amorim a major boost. The Man United boss has already seen praise arrive for Mbeumo and will be desperate to see others find form to receive similar recognition.

Speaking about the former Brentford man, United legend Wayne Rooney said on his podcast, ‘The Wayne Show’: “He looks like the type of character who would be fine with it (going back to his old club).

“I think he’s been a real positive for Man United this season. I think his energy, his running off the ball, his commitment, he’s scored a couple of goals, he could have had more. So I’ve been really happy. I think he’s been, out of all the signings, the most positive one. And he looks like someone who will just take it in his stride.”

Man Utd want to beat Chelsea to striker signing, £10m-a-year wage not an issue

What a signing this could be for Ruben Amorim.

ByHenry Jackson Sep 26, 2025

It’s the type of signing that the Red Devils must aim for in 2026, with rumours already throwing up some interesting names. Following up from their summer spending, INEOS are already reportedly eyeing moves for Adam Wharton, Dusan Vlahovic and are among the leaders in the race to welcome a La Liga talent next year.

Man Utd one of leading clubs in Gallagher race

According to reports in Spain, Man United are one of the leading clubs in the race to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid in 2026. The midfielder reportedly wants to leave the Spanish club in an attempt to secure his England World Cup spot and is valued at around £52m ahead of January.

Other Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in the midfielder, but it is United who have expressed interest at this stage, having had an offer rejected in the summer. Another former Chelsea player, the Red Devils will be hoping to secure a solution for their midfield problems.

Dubbed “intense” by Diego Simeone, Gallagher’s work in possession is particularly impressive compared to Ugarte. The England international would hand United the control that they’re looking for as a result and could also see Bruno Fernandes pushed back into one of the two advanced midfield roles.

When 2026 arrives, the Red Devils would be wise to pursue Gallagher in hope of finally stabilising what has been a struggling midfield for far too long at Old Trafford.

He can surpass Woltemade: Newcastle have one of the world's best teen stars

Newcastle United’s summer business underlined just how far the club has come since the takeover and how much further they still want to go.

It was a window marked by frustration, last-minute deals and big-money moves.

The Magpies were forced to bide their time as a string of forward targets slipped away, with Liam Delap, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro and Benjamin Sesko all proving elusive.

Persistent interest in Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa also seemed destined to end in disappointment.

Yet as the window drew to a close, Newcastle’s hierarchy finally pulled the trigger.

Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade arrived in a £69m deal, paving the way for Alexander Isak’s record-breaking £125m switch to Premier League Champions Liverpool on deadline day.

Wissa’s determination to join also paid off, with a £55m agreement finalised as the player drove through the night to force the transfer.

Early results, however, have been mixed. A goalless draw with Aston Villa, a 3-2 home defeat to Liverpool and another 0-0 against Leeds have highlighted Newcastle’s need for attacking fluency.

Wolves at St James’ Park and a glamour Champions League tie against Barcelona await after the international break – fixtures that will test Howe’s new-look group immediately.

Nick Woltemade: Newcastle’s headline addition

At 23 years old and standing at 1.98m, Nick Woltemade is the archetypal modern target man.

Tall, technically secure, and more mobile than his frame suggests.

His 12 goals in 28 Bundesliga games for Stuttgart last season marked him out as one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards, and it was no surprise that Bayern Munich had three bids rejected earlier in the summer.

Persuaded by direct conversations with Howe, Woltemade chose Newcastle as the platform for the next stage of his career.

The Germany international already has four senior caps to his name and impressed at the U21 European Championships this summer.

Most recently, he showcased his playmaking instincts with an assist in Germany’s 3-1 win over Northern Ireland.

A closer look at his data from 2024/25 paints a picture of a well-rounded striker.

Across 28 appearances, Woltemade was involved in 14 goals, with a shot-on-target percentage of 50%.

He averages 1.28 shots on target per 90 and creates 4.38 shot-creating actions in the same span, evidence of his ability to contribute beyond finishing.

His 2.89 progressive passes and 1.72 progressive carries per 90 show a player comfortable linking play, while 26.1 carries per 90 underline his willingness to drive the ball forward.

Even defensively, Woltemade has shown application, recording 0.56 tackles and 1.28 blocks per 90.

For a Newcastle side that often struggles to break down low blocks, his mix of aerial presence, movement and creativity looks like the perfect tool.

That being said, perhaps Newcastle have a gem in their ranks who could surpass the big German.

The hidden Newcastle gem with superstar potential

While Woltemade is already making headlines, Newcastle may have secured an even greater long-term prize in the form of Vakhtang Salia.

The 18-year-old Georgian striker joined on a five-year deal this summer and is expected to be a key figure in the U21 squad this season.

He arrives from Dinamo Tbilisi, where he registered eight goals and four assists in 57 senior appearances.

Modest numbers on paper, but performances that convinced scouts from across Europe.

Salia has already attracted admiration from giants including Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich, while both Arsenal and Manchester City explored a deal.

In the words of journalist Graeme Bailey he is regarded as “one of the best teenage prospects in the world,” a label that has earned comparisons to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

What makes Salia so intriguing is his potential. At a market value of just €800k (£600k), Newcastle have invested in a player who could grow into a genuine superstar.

His performances at youth international level for Georgia have already caught the eye, and he has shown maturity beyond his years in leading the line against more experienced defenders in the Georgian league.

For Howe, Salia represents an opportunity. The club must carefully manage his development, ensuring he does not suffer the setbacks that have stalled other highly-touted prospects.

If handled correctly, though, Newcastle may find themselves with a striker capable of eclipsing Woltemade.

Pep Guardiola tells Erling Haaland he 'isn't stupid enough' to consider Barcelona transfer after signing 10-year Man City contract as legendary manager admits he 'understands' former club's interest

Pep Guardiola has laughed off reports linking Erling Haaland with a move to Barcelona, insisting the striker is "not stupid enough" to consider leaving Manchester City after signing a decade-long deal. The Norwegian has eleven goals in eight games so far this season and remains committed to the club as he hopes to lead them to even greater success.

Barcelona president Laporta wants Haaland next summer

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has reportedly placed Haaland at the top of his transfer wish list as part of his re-election campaign. The Catalan giants are said to dream of pairing the 25-year-old with their next generation of stars, including Lamine Yamal and Pedri. However, Haaland’s recent contract extension keeps him at City until 2034, making any potential move highly unlikely, and Guardiola doesn't believe the Norwegian will be headed anywhere in the near future.

Guardiola dismissed speculation with trademark humour, pointing to Haaland’s intelligence and ambition. "I think Erling isn’t stupid enough to sign something he doesn’t want to accomplish, that is for sure," he said. "But it's football, who knows what is going to happen. Nobody knows. Honestly, I don’t know what is going to happen. I know he has a long contract here, and I think he’s doing really well and scoring a lot of goals."

Guardiola acknowledged Laporta’s admiration, noting that any club would want a striker of Haaland’s quality. "Can you tell me one club that wouldn’t dream of Erling Haaland?" he added. "I understand Barcelona dream of Erling, and all the clubs in the world. If Erling would not be with us it would be a dream for Man City have Erling.
