Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand responds to Ashley Young’s Instagram snap

A collection of Manchester United players current and old were involved as Inter Milan recorded a huge victory in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday evening.

Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku and Ashley Young all featured for Inter as they came from behind to snatch all three points from their eternal city rivals AC Milan at the San Siro.

The Rossoneri were convincingly better in the first half and were two goals up when the referee whistled to signal the end of the first half.

But the Nerazzurri clawed their way back, scoring four goals with no reply in the second 45 as they claimed a massive three points in their bid to win the Scudetto.

Rio Ferdinand, Man United icon and TV pundit, responded to Young’s snap with a single word that summed up the feeling at the culmination of a truly breathtaking game of football.

The former England international only made the switch to Italy in the January transfer window but, if his latest Instagram snap is anything to go by, it seems he’s already experiencing the magic of one of Europe’s other elite divisions.

Dinnery claims Gomes’ recovery is the fastest on his record

Everton are bracing themselves for Andre Gomes’ grand return to the pitch following the ankle injury which he sustained at the beginning of November in a gruesome incident involving Heung-Min Son.Since that day, the Portuguese midfielder has been out of commission for a total of 121 days, missing 19 games for the Toffees in the process.

Call yourself an Everton expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

But it was recently revealed by injury expert Ben Dinnery that Gomes has actually recovered from his setback faster than any other player Premier League with a fracture-dislocation injury ever has, per data recorded by Premierinjuries.com.

He shared this achievement via his Twitter account.

If the speed of his comeback wasn’t already incredibly impressive then it certainly is now.

He has recovered ahead of the trip to the Emirates Stadium and Carlo Ancelotti has recently confirmed the player is indeed available, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s going to play any part in the game.

After all, Everton have to take things slow after such a serious setback.

Elsewhere, many Everton fans were absolutely buzzing with Gomes’ recent Twitter update…

Lee Peltier offers verdict on West Brom teammate

West Brom’s fourth win in five matches has handed them a comfortable nine-point margin from the burden of the playoffs at the top of the Championship table. The Baggies thumped fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol City 3-0 at Ashton Gate, even despite going down to ten men in the second half as Romaine Sawyers received his marching orders.Hal Robson-Kanu was in electric form, bagging a brace – first, slotting home a simple tap-in before rounding off the victory with a fine left-footed volley.Following the match, January addition Lee Peltier – who is yet to feature or be named in a matchday squad for Albion – commented on the 30-year-old’s form on Twitter. He said:

It’s the Welshman’s ninth goal of the season but the first time in eight matches he has found the net in the Championship, per Transfermarkt.

Slaven Bilic has put a lot of faith in Robson-Kanu to lead the line over summer signings Charlie Austin and Kenneth Zohore in recent games, and that’s been repaid with today’s performance.

Cucurella would offer something similar to Rose at Spurs

In search of regular first-team football, Danny Rose made a loan move to Newcastle during the January transfer window.

Bearing in mind he made just 10 starts for Tottenham during the first half of the campaign, and with Euro 2020 just around the corner, it was a choice that made perfect sense. He has already started twice for the Magpies since making the switch to St. James’ Park on the left side of Steve Bruce’s back four.

With less than 18 months left on his contract in north London, though, the summer will represent something of a crossroads for the England international and his future is likely to depend on his performances in the North East. A good spell at Newcastle could see him force his way into Jose Mourinho’s plans, but a failure to make any kind of impression may very well see him thrown on the scrap heap, if he isn’t surplus to requirements already.

But his fate may already be decided.

According to Cadena Cope (via Mundo Deportivo), Spurs are already looking at a potential new left-back. They are reporting that Getafe’s Marc Cucurella, who is on loan from Barcelona, is on their radar. In a complex situation, Getafe will purchase 60% of his rights in the summer for €6m (£5m), with the Blaugrana holding on to the other 40% – he is said to have a release clause of €25m (£21m).

Getafe have been a surprise package in La Liga so far this campaign, currently lying just one point off fourth place. Their success has been based mostly on their sturdy back-line – they have conceded just 25 goals in 25 matches, with only Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid conceding less – and 21-year-old Cucurella has played a big role in that.

He has been included in the starting line-up for every league match to date, managing one goal and four assists in the process.

Rose, who made 22 appearances in the Premier League for Tottenham last term, managed three assists himself. From a creative point of view, Cucurella has a slight advantage over his potential rival – he has averaged 1.4 key passes per match, whilst Rose was only able to muster up one per match during the 2018/19 season. In all fairness, though, the latter has a significant advantage in terms of dribbles, leading with 1.3 compared to 0.7.

From a defensive point of view, it is the younger of the two who leads the way. The Spaniard has averaged 2.1 tackles per game so far this term, whilst the former Leeds United youngster managed 1.9 in the previous campaign.

With an average WhoScored rating of 6.89 compared to the Englishman’s 6.84, the youngster and Rose are evenly matched.

Both are solid defensively and, whilst Cucurella does have the advantage from a key passing point of view, Rose leads the way in terms of dribbles. In the short term, the Getafe man is unlikely to provide anything too different than what is already at Spurs’ disposal, but in the long-term, he has plenty of time to grow and polish his skills.

As Mourinho looks to put his stamp on this side in the summer – his first real opportunity to do so – Cucurella may be one to consider.

Rose has been a loyal servant in north London, making 210 appearances since 2007. However, there must come a point when sentimentality is replaced by realism, and it is unlikely that he has a future at the club.

Cucurella, meanwhile, is just starting out, and has already shown he can play an important role in a team that is fighting for a place in European competition. The time has come to move out with the old and in with the new.

West Brom predicted XI vs Newcastle in the FA Cup

West Brom take a break from league action, probably something they could do without at this stage of the season, but alas the FA Cup fifth round has arrived.

The Baggies host Premier League outfit Newcastle United at the Hawthorns later this evening as this stage of the competition has switched to midweek due to the winter break.

Slaven Bilic’s side recorded their first defeat in seven attempts on Saturday afternoon, allowing Leeds United back in the title race, although they still hold a six-point cushion to the playoff positions.

The Croatian has rotated in the cups this campaign, and that isn’t likely to change here either, here’s our predicted XI…

Bilic could make as many as nine changes as he hands an opportunity to a range of fringe players whilst resting some of his first-team stars for the final season run-in.

There’s a swap between the sticks with Jonathan Bond replacing Sam Johnstone for what will be only his fourth senior appearance of the season.

The backline is rejigged with Kyle Bartley returning to the fray along with Kieran Gibbs. The 30-year-old makes a long-awaited comeback from injury and takes the reins from Conor Townsend – a move Bilic has already publicly confirmed.

Dara O’Shea moves centrally with Ahmed Hegazi out injured with Darnell Furlong coming in at right-back over Lee Peltier, who may appear on the bench for the very first time since joining.

Bilic keeps the new 4-3-3 system, but there are plenty of switches further afield.

Rekeem Harper keeps his place but will have a very experienced duo next to him with Chris Brunt and Gareth Barry being handed a rare chance to start.

On the wings, loan duo Callum Robinson (cup-tied) and Matheus Pereira are rested which means Matty Phillips returns on the right with Kyle Edwards likely to hold down the other side.

Filip Krovinovic is also dropped for a breather ahead of the weekend.

Life after football: Do you know what all of these former players did next?

While Charlie Austin wins the battle for the number nine role with fellow 30-year-old Hal Robson-Kanu earning a rest. Kenneth Zohore could feature from the bench.

Kamil Grosicki is cup-tied and will not be involved, and there should be a place for youth talent Rayhaan Tulloch after he missed the U23 game on Monday night.

Spurs fans discuss Chris Smalling

Talk of Tottenham Hotspur’s summer transfer window intentions have come to light and there is one certain link that has proven to be divisive among the club’s supporters.

It has been revealed by Gazzetta dello Sport that the London club are among those looking to sign Chris Smalling from Manchester United in the summer, with the England international having impressed on loan at AS Roma this term.

It is included in the report that any side looking to sign the 30-year-old would need to pay €29m (£25.3m).

There are some fans who are pleased about the idea of seeing Smalling come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, suggesting that he is “better than [Davinson] Sanchez” and can “be a Jan [Vertonghen] replacement”.

He has made 21 Serie A appearances for Roma this season, scoring two goals and assisting one, while averaging 1 tackle, 2 interceptions, 4.5 clearances and 1.1 blocks per game.

Money talks: How much did Levy pay for each of these Spurs stars?

The above indicates how solid he has been for the side currently sitting fifth in the table, showing that he may be able to do a job for Spurs.

However, there are plenty of fans who are far from keen about the idea of having Smalling join their club, with one saying that Jose Mourinho “needs to be sacked immediately” if he brings the defender in.

The fact that he is 30 years of age does not help the defender’s cause, while one fan feels that they should be looking at centre-backs such as Nathan Ake, Kostas Manolas and Kalidou Koulibaly, rather than Smalling.

Another fan has offered the opinion that Smalling “suits Italian football” and would “look lazy” if he returned to England.

United fans on Twitter were often not happy with the Englishman’s displays, which suggest the following Spurs supporters are right the be wary of him.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans react to another of their links with a defender.

Newcastle United: Magpies fans slam Chronicle’s greatest player poll

Loads of Newcastle United fans have slammed The Chronicle’s greatest player poll, with many supporters suggesting an obvious winner.

The daily newspaper asked Geordies to pick the club’s best player in the Premier League era via a process of elimination over the next 18 days.

Unsurprisingly the survey received a backlash from a large section of the Toon Army, with one fan blasting the poll as a “stupid question really.” Most replies suggested the winner should easily be Alan Shearer, while a few mentioned Peter Beardsley as another option.

Shearer featured in over 300 appearances for his boyhood club, bagging a staggering 148 league goals during his time at St James’ Park (Transfermarkt). He ended his career as the most successful goalscorer in the Premier League’s history, having scored 260 goals in total, a record the 49-year-old still holds to this day.

In comparison, Beardsley netted 47 goals in 129 Premier League appearances for the Black and Whites. The former England international moved to Tyneside from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps for just £151k, then left for Liverpool for £1.94m, and returned to Newcastle from Merseyside club Everton for £1.53m in 1993 (Transfermarkt).

Crystal Palace ace Christian Benteke has been a woeful signing

A £27m arrival from Liverpool in the summer of 2016, Christian Benteke may have been seen by Crystal Palace as the man who could consistently fire in the goals for the club.

Speaking after the announcement of his signing, then Eagles manager Alan Pardew said: “I’m pleased the board have been brave with this move. He’s someone I know very well because I wanted to take him to Newcastle. I thought he’d be a fantastic fit for that club. He got the move to Liverpool and it hasn’t quite worked out. For us, we need to get him back to doing what he does best. His style of play, the way he feeds off crosses. He’ll enjoy that with the wide players we have.”

Unfortunately for Pardew and Palace, Benteke has been nothing short of a monumental disaster.

In 111 games for the London side, he has found the back of the net a paltry 22 times, whilst also only providing a further ten assists. To put that into context, Benteke has been worth a staggering £1.2m per goal. Hardly the biggest evidence of him being an astute financial investment.

His miseries have extended to this season too, with current Palace boss Roy Hodgson struggling to get the best out of him. As per Transfermarkt, he has managed to score just once in 21 games across all competitions, and that it was in the Eagles’ 3-1 defeat away to Everton.

Calling all Eagles fans: Can you get 90% on this quickfire Palace quiz?

Benteke’s struggles are no doubt a painful memory for Steve Parish and co, a symbol of the kind of consequences they stand to face if a big-money signing doesn’t work out. Palace aren’t like Manchester City or Manchester United in having a bottomless pit of money, and so when they do make a splash in the transfer market, there really is no room for failure.

The Belgian’s nightmare time at Selhurst Park is a damning verdict on Pardew’s decision to bring him into the club in the first place.

Meanwhile, here’s FFC’s verdict on whether Palace should sign this ace.

Crystal Palace send heartfelt message to fan

Football clubs can be an integral part of the lives of those who follow them, whether that person goes around the country watching them or do so from the comfort of their own home.It is much easier for them to have an impact when they are on the pitch, but with the Premier League currently suspended, one Crystal Palace fan, who goes by J__CPFC has shown on Twitter how the club did that for their grandfather.Someone phoned to check on him, and while that may seem like something small, it has clearly made its mark on that person.

Football clubs are pillars of their communities, and even when a ball is not being kicked, they can play an important role in supporting their fans.

The Eagles have shown a way of doing this, which should definitely be commended, and other Premier League clubs should be taking notes.

All-round T&T crush Jamaica for third place

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsCarlton Baugh’s 40 was not enough for Jamaica to stretch Trinidad and Tobago•Anthony Harris/West Indies Cricket Board

Trinidad and Tobago may have narrowly missed making the finals of the Caribbean T20, but they put in a thoroughly disciplined performance against a listless Jamaica to settle for third place. The seamers, led by Kevon Cooper, restricted Jamaica to an inadequate 94 in a match initially reduced to 14 overs, before the openers strolled to the revised target of 89 in just 10.1 overs.T&T had the incentive to give their home fans something to cheer about, but Jamaica failed to derive any kind of inspiration. With the exception of Carlton Baugh, none of the batsmen batted with motivation, and it was a continuation of their performance in the semi-final yesterday.Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert won the toss and chose to bat under bright skies, but a sudden downpour forced the players indoors for more than 90 minutes. The Trinidad seamers hit the deck hard and got good carry off a moist surface, getting rid of the attacking opening pair of Chris Gayle and Xavier Marshall early. Gayle, who had a disappointing tournament, holed out to the trap at deep midwicket, before Marshall had his middle stump flattened by a Cooper yorker.Marlon Samuels failed to assume the role of senior pro and was dismissed in embarrassing circumstances. He squeezed the ball to cover and set off for a single but his partner Danza Hyatt was rooted to his end watching the ball. Samuels was stranded at Hyatt’s end giving T&T an easy run-out. Hyatt himself failed to make amends as he lost his off stump to Dave Mohammed trying to pull a ball which wasn’t short enough.Baugh gave the innings some impetus sweeping and cutting Sherwin Ganga for consecutive boundaries. He swept Mohammed over deep square-leg to bring up the first six of the game, and then picked up two crisp boundaries past point off the seamers. But the pressure increased on him as he lost a couple of partners and when Lendl Simmons served up a short delivery, he failed to clear Bravo at deep midwicket. Bravo bowled a fine final over, delivering three dot balls to Lambert as Jamaica limped to 94.Adrian Barath and Simmons made easy work of the target, which was reduced to 89 off 13 overs following a brief shower after 3.2 overs. The pair also ensured they kept with the Duckworth-Lewis par score and didn’t lose any wickets by the end of five overs, the minimum required to constitute a match. The persistent drizzle didn’t help the Jamaican bowlers as they struggled to grip the ball. Simmons used the opportunity to recover some form by going on the attack, often making room and clearing his back leg to muscle the ball away. Barath was powerful off the front foot, lofting and driving square on the off side to pick up five fours in his 39.The match was nowhere close to the intensity of the first semi-final yesterday, but the home fans weren’t complaining as T&T delivered the knockout blow.
