Eddie Howe's demand becomes clear as Newcastle enter pole position for Scott McTominay

Scott McTominay could be on his way back to the Premier League after Newcastle United entered the race to secure his signature alongside a number of rivals.

The Magpies, with their PSR problems behind them, have set their sights on building a side capable of staying inside the Premier League’s top four and that may start with their midfield.

Already, those at St James’ Park have tied Sandro Tonali down to a new deal at the club after holding secret talks with the Italian and now rumours are emerging as to who could join the former AC Milan man.

Elliot Anderson for Nottingham Forest

At 25 years old, Tonali is increasingly likely to play a key role under Eddie Howe for years to come and Newcastle could even decide to build the heart of their side around the midfielder, whilst also pursuing the likes of Elliot Anderson.

The Nottingham Forest star has been linked with a return to Tyneside just over a year since leaving Newcastle for the Midlands in what would be a sensational move.

Howe even went as far as to admit that there’s some regret that Newcastle were left with no choice but to sell Anderson amid PSR problems last year. That alone suggests that he’d be more than happy to welcome the England international back with open arms.

By signing Anderson just after securing Tonali’s future, PIF could also be opening the door for a Ballon d’Or nominee to take his place in Newcastle’s midfield.

Newcastle in pole position to sign Scott McTominay

Newcastle are now in pole position to sign McTominay from Napoli alongside Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, according to TeamTalk. Both sides are reportedly joined by Barcelona in the race to welcome the Scotland international, who is also expected to be offered a new deal in Italy.

When McTominay left Manchester United in 2024, the Red Devils were happy to show him the door. Now, over a year later, he has the world at his feet and was even a 2025 Ballon d’Or nominee. His rise has been sensational, and he could yet make a return to England to end some unfinished business.

Not just Joelinton: Newcastle's "true legend" may now be on borrowed time

To no surprise, Howe also reportedly believes McTominay is the perfect fit for his Newcastle side and views him as someone who would help the Magpies stay in the Champions League.

Described as “special” by former Man United boss Jose Mourinho, the midfielder has finally realised his full potential and now has another big decision to make.

Leeds have a 17-year-old who's going to be a huge upgrade on Calvert-Lewin

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke was left incredibly frustrated by his side’s lack of ruthlessness in the final third in their defeat to Burnley on Saturday.

After the match, the German head coach noted that his team had more “possession, shots, big chances, xG” than the Clarets in their Premier League clash, but they came away from Turf Moor with no points to show for their efforts.

The statistics in the table above show that Farke was right about the level of chances that his team created throughout the match, but they failed to score a single goal from 2.63 xG and four ‘big chances’.

Brenden Aaronson, arguably, missed the biggest chance of the match when he raced through on goal to fire his shot almost straight at Martin Dubravka, who produced the save.

Jayden Bogle, Jack Harrison, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin also missed opportunities to find the back of the net, as the home side scored two goals from four shots in the entire game.

It is hard not to feel a little bit sorry for Farke from an offensive perspective, as the players the board have left him with do not look clinical enough for this level.

Why Farke is not to blame for Leeds United's attacking problems

It can be easy to use outcome bias to pin all the blame on the manager when a team loses a game. Sometimes the manager is to blame because the coaching or the tactics lead to a poor performance that gives the players little chance of picking up a result.

However, Farke put out a team with a structure and a style that created three times as many ‘big chances’ as the opposition, and roughly five times as much xG, but it was the players at his disposal that let him down.

Football Insider reported last month that the head coach wanted two more attacking signings in the summer, Harry Wilson and Manor Solomon, but the club did not land either of them.

As you can see in the table above, Leeds rank within the top eight teams in the league for ‘big chances’ created, but they also rank fourth for misses.

They have missed a staggering 14 of the 17 ‘big chances’ that they have created, which is why Farke should not be blamed for the lack of potency in the final third, because his system has been one of the most effective in the league.

Calvert-Lewin, who has scored one Premier League goal, is one of the players who has let him down. The former England international has missed the most ‘big chances’ in the team (five), per Sofascore, and ranks third in the division for ‘big chances’ missed.

The summer signing from Everton has not stepped up and delivered enough quality in front of goal, which has left Farke in a difficult position without the signings that he wanted the club to make in the forward areas.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

The former Norwich and Borussia Monchengladbach head coach has been let down by the options he has in the first-team, which means that he may have to look to the academy.

Leeds United are brewing a potential upgrade on Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the form of 17-year-old centre-forward Harry Gray, who has excelled at youth level.

Why Harry Gray may be an upgrade on Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The teenage striker is currently out with a hip injury and is expected to be back in training next week, and he should be given a chance to impress once he is back up to speed.

There is no guarantee that Gray will be able to handle the step up to the Premier League as a 17-year-old striker, which is why it is harsh to judge Farke if he decides against such a risk, but his form at youth level suggests that he has the potential to be a breakout star.

The English striker scored four goals in four Premier League 2 matches before picking up a hip injury, per Transfermarkt, whilst he also notched a hat-trick against Scunthorpe in the National League Cup.

Gray, who was described as “seriously talented” by analyst Ben Mattinson, also scored eight goals in 11 matches for the U18s in the 2024/25 campaign, per Transfermarkt.

This means that the teenage marksman, who made his first-team debut against Stoke in the Championship last term, has delivered goals on a consistent basis at U18 and U21 level over the past 14 months or so.

As you can see in the table above, Calvert-Lewin’s form for Everton in the four seasons before his move to Elland Road does not suggest that he is likely to turn his current form around in front of goal.

He has consistently underperformed as a finisher in the Premier League, which is why it is not a surprise that he has missed five ‘big chances’ and only scored one goal for Leeds so far.

Gray, meanwhile, has been a lethal goalscorer who has found the back of the net week-in-week-out at two different age groups at academy level in the last two seasons for the Whites.

His impressive goalscoring rate for the U18s and U21s suggests that the club are brewing an upgrade on Calvert-Lewin, who has struggled to score goals on a consistent basis for most of his career, but it remains to be seen if he can make the step up in the short-term.

Berta given edge over Man Utd in race for 2026 free agent with strong Arsenal tie

Arsenal are looking to establish themselves as the dominant force in English football and could now be set to accelerate their pursuit of a star who has an intriguing link with a key member of their squad.

Mikel Arteta is into his sixth year at the Gunners and will hope his side can seize the opportunity that lies ahead in the Premier League title race, given they have managed to amass a four-point lead at this point.

Ultimately, their frustrating draw away to Sunderland before the international break will be a source of inconvenience. However, no team is going to win every match across a whole campaign, so they will put it behind them ahead of stiff tests against Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

Looking at their central priorities, lifting the Premier League title has to be the main focus. Nevertheless, Pete O’Rourke confirmed on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast that Arteta could be set to engage in talks over a contract extension later next year.

He said: “Yeah, I think for certain it’s something that they will get to, as you said, it’s probably not the priority right now. Arteta’s contract will take care of itself. I’ve got no doubts about that. Arteta’s happy at Arsenal. Arsenal are obviously very happy with him.

“I think for Arteta himself probably his focus and priority right now is on success for Arsenal this season. I’m sure later in 2026, I’m sure there’ll be talks held between Arteta and Arsenal to see if they can sort out his future and extend his stay at the Emirates as well.”

Planning for the future is also firmly part of his remit at the Emirates, and he could now be set to complete a surprising deal for a star who has a familiar family name.

Arsenal could seal Quinten Timber free transfer

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are plotting a move for Feyenoord midfielder Quinten Timber, who is set to see his contract expire in Rotterdam come the summer of 2026.

Of course, he is the brother of Gunners fan favourite Jurrien, and this could hand them an edge in the race given their obvious tie to the player.

Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and West Ham United are also alert to his situation as he represents a lucrative option to strengthen ahead of next season without having to pay a transfer fee.

On the flipside, Dortmund may be willing to bid for the Utrecht-born midfielder in January, in case Feyenoord opt to take what they can get for his services rather than allow his deal to run down.

Scoring twice and laying on a solitary assist in 14 matches this campaign, 24-year-old Timber has been on the Gunners’ radar for an extended period of time, something that won’t come as a surprise due to his brother’s presence in North London.

Now, they could complete a rare scenario where twins are on board at the same club. However, Dortmund are deemed to be leading the race at this point.

Newcastle now readying big-money offer to sign "one of the best" stars in Europe

Newcastle United are now reportedly preparing a big-money offer to sign a Champions League star, who finished in the top 10 of the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

Eddie Howe drops Yoane Wissa update

It was such a frantic summer at St James’ Park that it’s sometimes easy to forget that Newcastle still have Yoane Wissa waiting in the wings. The striker is yet to kick a ball for the Magpies after suffering an injury on international duty not long after his £55m move from Brentford.

That could soon change, however. Eddie Howe recently took the chance to provide an update on his summer signing, who would certainly provide his side with a much-needed attacking boost.

The Magpies won’t want to rush Wissa back, but the fact that he is back training with the team is certainly a positive sign. With fixtures set to come thick and fast across the festive period too, they could do with every option possible available.

Whether Wissa’s return changes Newcastle’s January transfer plans is another question. It will potentially allow them to maintain their focus on signing an added midfield star and another winger.

The likes of Manu Kone have already been linked with a move to Tyneside this week and it’s becoming clear that Newcastle are keen to reinforce their midfield in 2026.

They could also land an instant upgrade on the struggling Anthony Elanga. The winger is yet to make his mark at the club, despite becoming one of the most expensive signings in Newcastle history in the summer and could now be replaced by a sensational move for Raphinha.

Newcastle readying big-money Raphinha offer

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle are now readying a big-money offer to sign Raphinha as PIF look to intensify their pursuit. The Barcelona star finished as high as fifth in the 2025 Ballon d’Or and could now be on his way back to the Premier League in sensational fashion.

“Special" Newcastle signing is now becoming the biggest disaster since Wood

Newcastle may have got this one wrong in the summer transfer market.

ByAngus Sinclair Nov 29, 2025

The former Leeds United man would transform Newcastle into a consistent Champions League side and the prospect of a partnership between himself and Nick Woltemade is certainly something to get excited about. In Raphina, the Magpies would be signing “one of the best players in the world”, according to Barcelona legend Romario.

Just how willing Barcelona are to sell one of their main men is the question. As usual, it’s worth noting that they could certainly do with the financial boost that a sale would hand them and this may be their final chance to cash in on 28-year-old Raphinha.

Blue Jays Update George Springer's Availability for Game 5 of World Series

George Springer is out of the lineup for the Blue Jays in Game 5 of the World Series vs. the Dodgers, marking the second consecutive game he's missed. He left Game 3 on Monday night in the seventh inning as he dealt with right side discomfort.

There was hope Springer would be available on Wednesday night, the last game in Los Angeles before the series heads to Toronto. He was seen warming up on the field at Dodger Stadium hours before the first pitch. He was running around and doing zig-zags, and was even seen swinging a bat. However, he did not appear in the lineup.

Manager John Schneider did tell MLB Network's Lauren Shehadi that Springer is "good" and is "very, very available" to come off the bench in Game 5. Don't be surprised if Springer makes a plate appearance on Wednesday night.

There is also a good chance Springer will be back in the lineup for the Blue Jays in Game 6 on Friday night in Toronto. Through the postseason thus far, Springer has registered 14 hits, 13 runs and four home runs, including a three-run homer that helped the Blue Jays win the ALCS over the Mariners in Game 7. He's averaged .246/.323/.561 through 14 postseason games.

Nathan Lukes filled in for Springer in the leadoff position on Tuesday night before being replaced by pinch hitter Ty France and outfielder Myles Straw. On Wednesday night, Davis Schneider will instead hit in the leadoff position as Lukes was also not named in the starting lineup.

Shohei Ohtani Had Some Incredible Reactions at the Plate During Game 2 vs. Phillies

The Dodgers withstood a late Phillies comeback to take a 2-0 lead in their National League Division Series on Monday night. Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-5 with a single and drove in what ended up being the game-deciding run to cap off a four-run seventh inning for Los Angeles.

Ohtani also had some priceless reactions that were captured on film during his five plate appearances.

For example, the reigning NL MVP made a pained face after fouling off a 2-2 pitch in the first at-bat of the game. That's a man who feels like he missed his pitch.

When he was punched out by the home plate umpire Adrian Johnson on the very next pitch, he held up his hand in disagreement, but decided it best to just give a little wave as if he were saying hello again. Perhaps he realized that Johnson had gotten the call right.

During his huge at-bat in the seventh, he provided another priceless reaction to a call he didn't seem to agree with. Either that or he was holding his helmet with all his might so that it would not fly off.

Ohtani and the Dodgers will attempt to finish the series at home on Wednesday night.

Ishan Porel and the Bengal bowling revolution

Porel, Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep are showing that there is a promising future ahead for the state side

Varun Shetty in Kolkata01-Mar-2020At one point on Sunday, the broadcast displayed a graphic of Bengal’s top wicket-takers in the last 10 seasons. The most conspicuous piece of information was that for six seasons in a row before this one, it was the same man – Ashok Dinda, who was axed from the team for “indiscipline” and has played only one match in 2019-20.Consider that, and then the fact that in two-and-a-half months of Ranji cricket this season, across ten matches, not a single team has managed to score more than 250 in an innings against Bengal. Despite the absence of their foremost bowler – discounting Mohammed Shami who has played one Bengal match since January 2018 – Bengal have managed to be among the best bowling line-ups in the competition.Ishan Porel, who has worked rigorously to lose the “medium-fast” tag, and is the youngest of the bowlers at 21, is effectively the leader of the attack now. After his five-wicket haul on Sunday, he said there was never any pressure to fill Dinda’s shoes.”There is no such pressure on me because we have been bowling well [together],” Porel said. “If you see the Indian team’s attack, they generally back each other and applaud each other’s performances. The same thing we are doing here and we are getting success. The hard work we have put in over the last three or four months and before the season – those things are working in the match.”In the lead-up to the semi-final against Karnataka, coach-cum-mentor Arun Lal had repeatedly reinforced his belief that Bengal were favourites despite the presence of batsmen like KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, and Karun Nair in the opposition. That was rooted somewhat in the reality that Karnataka’s batsmen have made only one century between them all season, with only one of them averaging more than 40. But it was also a nod to Bengal’s bowling this season, particularly to their budding new combination of fast bowlers, who took all of 35.2 overs to bowl Karnataka out for 122 and grab a lead of 190 on day two.Alongside Porel, who has only played five matches in the season due to India A commitments, are 26-year-old Mukesh Kumar, and 23-year-old Akash Deep who has just made the step up from Under-23 cricket this season. Each of them has taken at least 20 wickets this season, and the dynamics of their partnership was in full display.Shahbaz Ahmed is being carried by his team-mates after taking Bengal into the knockouts•PTI The surface for this fixture, like a typical green wicket, is most rewarding when the bowling lengths are full. Porel was relentless in this regard with the new ball, and as someone who can swing the ball at a good pace, he caused immediate damage with the early wickets of R Samarth and Nair, getting them to push well in front of their bodies. The consistency was particularly impressive coming from a tall man whose natural length is just short of a good length. In contrast, Prasidh Krishna, a similar type of bowler, with similar height, hasn’t been as effective for Karnataka in the match.Bowling with him were Kumar, who held one end up by bowling 14 of the first 29 overs at a stretch, and Akash, who bowled in small, boisterous bursts to trouble batsmen with extra skid off the pitch. For bowlers of varying styles and strengths, their attacking plans stayed identical to the frontline batsmen, and they only switched to bodyline when the lower-order was exposed. Equally impressively, they got through two full hours’ work with only the lunch break to give them any rest.Porel has bowled, on average, approximately 24 overs per match this season; Mukesh is second with approximately 21 per match, and Akash averages just about 17 per match. All of them average more than left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed (just over 16 per match), who is Bengal’s highest wicket-taker for the season with 30 wickets, and offspinner Arnab Nandi (just over 13 per match) who are the other bowlers who’ve bowled more than 100 overs.”Before the season, we’ve run a lot. In a week there has been four to five sessions of running, and two-three days of strength [training],” Porel said, describing the routine that is helping him stay fast while retaining control, adding that the prospect of missing a gym session has almost become unthinkable, to the point that he was headed for one at the end of day’s play. All three fast bowlers’ fitness levels is the main reason for their consistency. But they do not lack for tactical nous either. Porel and Mukesh had largely attacked the stumps while bowling to Rahul and No. 4 KV Siddharth, who briefly stabilised Karnataka’s innings. After getting through the tough examination, Siddharth was lulled into chasing a drive outside off by Akash in his first over, and edged to slip.At the same time, Mukesh changed ends after a wicketless first spell, to the side from where he would dismiss both Rahul and Pandey with persistent fourth-stump lines. When the left-handed Devdutt Padikkal came in, Porel got him first over of a new spell by creating an angle from over the wicket. And in his next, he created the same angle by going around the wicket to get right-handed Sharath Srinivas to edge to slip. During the end, Akash set K Gowtham up to ramp one to third man. From Porel’s assessment of it, all that was a fairly straightforward day. “When we get the new ball, we go for the kill,” he said about the roles each of them decides to play. “But when it’s not happening, we try to bowl in partnerships so that we do not leak too many runs. So the main criteria is to not give away easy runs and to maintain the pressure and the plans we make during the video sessions.”We were happy to see KL Rahul batting on 23 playing 73 balls [26 off 67], because if you’re not bowling well, KL Rahul would have been on 50. So we’re quite happy.”Not long after those bowling graphics were shown on TV, Porel was having caps and pens thrown at him at the fine leg boundary – for autographs he was more than happy to give. Every time he returned to that corner, he was drawing cheers of the sort only veteran Manoj Tiwary has elicited through the game. He is strongly poised to be the next big bowling name for Bengal; but in the larger scheme, a young pace attack, and an impressive spin-bowling allrounder will excite Bengal even more. Title-winning teams are built with bowling strength, and after quite a while, it seems like Bengal can depend on more than just one name.

West Indies surge through pace, but also discipline (and Chase)

West Indies’ quicks had to bide their time through the first two sessions but came back strongly

Nagraj Gollapudi11-Jul-2020″Morning. Morning! Go get your coffee, doubles, souse, ackee and saltfish because the forecast today predicts PACE from Gabriel, Holder, Roach and Joseph. With a few isolated spinning overs from Chase.”An excited social media manager posted that message on CWI’s Twitter before play on Saturday. If you had watched the first two sessions on what was another sunny day in Southampton, you might have wondered what exactly this person was on.At tea, Kemar Roach was wicketless. Shannon Gabriel had got the better of Dom Sibley, mostly due to error from the batsman. Alzarri Joseph bowled with speed, but the wicket column was empty. Jason Holder once again was on the money, but wickets were not to be found.ALSO READ: Play late: West Indies template for success in EnglandIt was not their fault, though – the Windies pace quartet were all honest triers. They all showed skill, pace, improvisation. Yet the pitch offered no favours. There wasn’t even a modicum of movement, in the air or off the pitch, for the seamers. Roach and Gabriel took a while to adjust with their line and length, which allowed Sibley and Rory Burns to pick up some easy runs and settle down quickly in the first hour.In the first innings West Indies had the support of the conditions – damp and overcast as Holder flattened England with a career-best figures. Roach had told ESPNcricinfo that fast bowling would be real hard work in the absence of saliva. Even the sweat was minimal considering it was the bowler alone who was exerting himself. The outfield was green so while the ball was getting old there was no reverse swing. But there was one option still available to deny England taking the match away: drying up the runs. And that is where Roston Chase, the offspinner, came in. He who surprised England last year with a match-winning eight-wicket haul. Even though the fast men failed to get any purchase, Chase did get the ball to turn significantly.Chase straightway created the doubts by pitching in and around the rough. Towards the end of his second over, bowling from round the stumps, and wide, he pitched an offbreak on Burns’ off stump which spun away. Luckily for Shane Dowrich there was no edge as the Windies gloveman failed to gather the ball cleanly. But the turn, which was appreciable, motivated Chase.

When West Indies did show intent, they reaped the rewards. The best example of that came close to the hour before stumps when Holder challenged his counterpart

The pressure was created in tandem, with Holder once again showing the discipline to keep things simple and allow no relief to the batsmen. The runs dried up. In the 14-over spell they bowled before lunch the pair gave away just 22 runs, including bowling six maidens. Sibley and Burns got sucked in to the disciplined interrogation by Chase and Holder. It was a game of patience now and West Indies were winning. Burns blinked, going to what appeared to be a premeditated cut, off balance and offering the point fielder an easy catch.West Indies kept the leash tight in the second session. According to ESPNcricinfo’s stats team, West Indies’ economy rate of 2.3 just before tea on Saturday was their most economical bowling innings in the last 15 years, when they have bowled 40 or more overs with five or fewer wickets to show for their efforts. Little wonder this West Indies fast bowling attack is being recognised as one of their best ever.If there was one thing the quartet could be accused of it was not showing enough aggression in the first two sessions. Despite having the knowledge that both Burns and Sibley are vulnerable against the short ball, Roach and Gabriel did not test the England openers in the first hour. But when they did show the intent, they reaped the rewards. The best example of that came close to the hour before stumps when Holder challenged his counterpart. Ben Stokes was desperate to take the upper hand against the second new ball and had punched some solid drives against both Roach and Gabriel. But in his second over, Holder bounced Stokes, who had once again been standing outside the crease. Next ball, Holder banged on the seam closer to Stokes, who was beaten by the ball jumping quickly on him. Holder quipped a few words as Stokes gestured that he should have tapped the ball past the two gullies.Roston Chase celebrates after dismissing Rory Burns•Getty ImagesTwo balls later Stoke once again started to move outside off to steer the ball, but Holder, coming from slightly wider, angled the ball away with a straight-ish seam. Stokes duly poked to one of the gullies as Holder jumped in delight. Next over, Zak Crawley, England’s best batsman on the day, pushed a return catch to Joseph who was in the middle of a fierce spell. Soon after Joseph would send Jos Buttler’s leg stump flying, courtesy an inside edge.Joseph had not been bowled for virtually the first two hours. He was earmarked as the man that would leave a mark on this series by West Indies head coach Phil Simmons on the eve of the Test. Yet Joseph was only brought on for a few overs before lunch. Did West Indies miss an opportunity by not letting him loose? But it seemed all part of a plan as Joseph showed late in the afternoon. Soon, Gabriel joined the party too. And Roach, the man on cusp of a significant milestone? He might have not got a wicket in this match so far, but he created pressure with his control and accuracy from the second session onwards. So, yes, the person who sent out that tweet in the morning knew what he was talking about. Pace did have the say, but with ample help from Chase. Discipline earned West Indies the wickets and the upper hand in this Test. Now comes the next challenge.Holder’s men have never been in this position before: of taking the lead in an away series against major opposition. The last time they went 1-0 up in England was 20 years ago at Edgbaston. Before that, they went ahead in 1995 when they won at Leeds in a series that was eventually drawn. In 1988, Viv Richards’ team took the lead, and also won the series – the last time West Indies did so in England. For the millions in Caribbean the possibility of a repeat could be all too heady to imagine. The question now for Holder’s Windies is: can they keep their heads on Sunday?
