Southampton loanee Cedric Soares reportedly labelled as an Inter Milan flop

[ad_pod ]

Southampton full-back Cedric Soares has been labelled as an Inter Milan flop by Italian media outlet Calciomercato despite only making four appearances for them following his loan move during the January transfer window, which doesn’t bode well for the summer for his parent club.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Saints offloaded the Portugal international to the Serie A giants last month with the 27-year-old among the high-profile such as like Manolo Gabbiadini and Wesley Hoedt to go through the exit door.

However, Tuttomercatoweb only reported on February 5 that the Euro 2016 winner was simply a stop-gap addition until the summer, and Calciomercato’s latest thoughts only go to back that idea up even further.

Cedric was largely left on the sidelines by Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl following his arrival at St Mary’s, with youngster Yan Valery often preferred at right-back or right wing-back instead of his experienced teammate.

Bad news for the summer

The south coast outfit’s first priority in the next few weeks will be to stay in the Premier League – something that looks in doubt right now given they are in the relegation zone and face Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in their next four top flight matches.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

Whether they survive or not there will surely be a huge squad overhaul in the summer after two successive relegation battles, and it looked as though Cedric might be one of the players they could get rid of easily for a reasonable transfer fee.

However, the fact that he has supposedly been written off at Inter already suggests that a summer exit to them is off the cards, and that could make what is already shaping up to be a tough summer for Southampton even tougher.

Crystal Palace fans react as Wilfried Zaha is fined by the FA

[ad_pod ]Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter in frustrated fashion after Wilfried Zaha received a charge from the Football Association for improper conduct, following his dismissal against Southampton on Wednesday night (as per the BBC).The Ivory Coast international received just a yellow card initially after a spat with James Ward-Prowse, before being given his marching orders just seconds later after sarcastically clapping referee Andre Marriner’s decision.Zaha opened the scoring on the night, before Ward-Prowse incidentally equalised late in the second half. The 26-year-old’s dismissal appeared to be a build up of frustration of a number of fouls against him that weren’t given, having been upended four times on the night (via Whoscored) – that figure is merely the amount that were awarded by Marriner.Who is your club’s worst ever January signing? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have picked theirs in the video below and they didn’t disappoint…Following the charge, the former Manchester United winger now has until 6pm on February 5 to respond, and Palace fans are understandably angry if their reactions on Twitter is anything to go by…

The Chalkboard: Pochettino’s team selection almost cost Spurs against Newcastle

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has Heung-Min Son to thank for his side’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon. The South Korean forward struck in the 83rd minute to finally break the deadlock, after Spurs dominated much of the game up to that point without being able to produce any end product.

However, it was the introduction of Fernando Llorente, who assisted Son’s winning goal, that truly changed the course of the match.

On the chalkboard

Pochettino’s side were on top throughout the first half. They persistently played crosses into the box from dangerous areas, but the Magpies’ were consistently able to deal with them. This is because Spurs lacked a physical presence.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

With in his introduction on the hour mark, Llorente finally gave the home team a focal point. The 33-year-old Spaniard took up a target man role and was able to use his 6’4” frame to good effect. For Son’s goal, he was able to hold off a Newcastle defender and chest the ball into Son’s path.

Late luck for Pochettino

Llorente was the perfect man to lead Spurs’ attack against Newcastle, who pulled no surprises with their game plan of sitting deep and soaking up pressure, which begs the question as to why Pochettino didn’t include the striker in his starting XI.

Ultimately, the fact that Spurs took all three points is all that matters, but had Llorente been on the pitch in the first half, he could have had an earlier impact and perhaps Spurs would then have enjoyed a more comfortable victory.

By not starting the veteran striker, Pochettino almost cost his side the win, and was fortunate that Llorente was able to make the difference in the final ten minutes.

Ryan Jack keen to play alongside Glen Kamara more often after Kilmarnock win

[ad_pod ]

Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack played alongside new boy Glen Kamara in the 5-0 Scottish Cup thrashing of Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Wednesday, and his comments to rangers.co.uk after the final whistle suggest that he enjoyed the experience.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Kamara completed his move to the Glasgow giants from Dundee on the final day of the January transfer window, but didn’t make his debut for the club until the 0-0 draw with St Johnstone last weekend – one Jack incidentally missed because of an injury issue.

However, the duo were both named in the starting XI as Steven Gerrard opted for a 4-1-4-1 system against Killie, and it proved to be a happy night for the hosts as Alfredo Morelos netted four times and Andy Halliday scored another in the comprehensive win.

Speaking post-match about his new teammate, Jack told rangers.co.uk: “Yeah it was good.

“Obviously I’ve trained with him a couple of times, and Glen’s a good footballer.

“I thought he was really good tonight and I really enjoyed playing alongside him. He’s good at keeping the ball, I really enjoyed it and hopefully there’s more of that to come.”

Budding partnership on the cards?

There might well be, with Jack’s comments certainly suggesting that he is keen to play with the Finland international more often.

The fact that Rangers have only just signed Kamara suggests that he has a big role to play at Ibrox in the coming years, while at 26 years of age his Scottish teammate has already established himself as a key man for the club.

The pair are likely to feature prominently in Gerrard’s central midfield both now and in the future with the likes of Scott Arfield and Steven Davis getting no younger.

Everton fans stunned by Holgate’s loan form

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Everton fans have been giving their verdict on the fantastic form of Mason Holgate, as the youngster continues to impress on loan with West Brom.

Holgate always looked a little out of place at Everton, as the 22 year-old is clearly immensely talented, with all the technique and athleticism needed to make it at the top level, but yet he just couldn’t put it all together in a blue shirt.

That now appears to be down to various managers’ team selection rather than the player’s own shortcomings though, and he is excelling in a new role for West Brom, who he joined on loan in January.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Though he did occasionally feature on the flank at Goodison, the majority of his time was spent at centre back, where he was often bullied by physical strikers.

Now playing right-back at the Hawthorns, he is proving himself more than capable of holding his own physically against any winger, and is also showing the attacking instincts required to be a modern day full-back.

The youngster assisted Jake Livermore’s late winner in a 3-2 win against QPR on Tuesday night, which takes his tally to three assists in just seven Championship starts.

Fans are impressed by his form, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Jose Mourinho was right: Fred can’t be trusted at Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has largely managed to please everyone, including the fans and seemingly those within the club since his arrival in December.

The Norwegian has given opportunities to almost everyone in the squad but there were questions raised on his relationship with summer signing Fred, who’s rarely appeared under him.

However, with injury problems depleting his squad, Solskjaer decided to unleash Fred away at Crystal Palace. Being partnered alongside Paul Pogba and a confident-again Scott McTominay, Fred’s performance proved why the Norwegian is keeping him sidelined.

Indeed, the Brazilian seemed really quite nervous, often making errors, which would have certainly frustrated fans.

Despite receiving assurances from his teammates on the pitch, Fred created his own problems by giving the ball away and putting his side under pressure. He was dispossessed three times on the ball (stats via Fotmob), while making some embarrassing miss-passes trying to be creative.

The Brazilian was encouraged by team-mates who often gave him possession, but he seemed unassured on many occasions and a far cry from the player who impressed so much at Shakhtar Donetsk. On performances like this one, it’s clear to see why former manager Jose Mourinho claimed he couldn’t ‘trust’ (quotes sourced from the Daily Mail) playing him in light of United’s defensive problems.

He was especially poor in the first half, where he invited pressure onto United with poor mistakes. Fred couldn’t replicate the pressing threat of Ander Herrera, not be as creative as Pogba in midfield. While he did improve in the second half, being safer with his distribution, it was the performance of a man with next to no confidence.

While Solskjaer may still trust him to eventually come good, that won’t be happening this season.

Fred still needs time to adapt into the intensity of the Premier League and needs to make do with a place in the bench for now.

Miguel Almiron: Don’t expect too much too soon, Newcastle fans

[ad_pod ]

Miguel Almirón completed a club record transfer to Newcastle in January and the 2018 MLS all-star brings with him loads of excitement. In 65 appearances for Atlanta United, Almirón amassed 22 goals and 21 assists, and the crafty and creative attacker earned himself Newcomer of the Year honours in 2017 before leading the expansion franchise to an MLS Cup title a year later.

The 24-year-old created international buzz as a thrilling playmaker and distributor in the final third during his time in the MLS, and this January finally made his highly-anticipated jump to Europe. After shining in the MLS, Almirón will now have the opportunity prove himself on the world’s biggest stage.

But as Rafa Benítez’s newest signing infuses excitement into the club, he also arrives with high expectations. When Almirón makes his debut, he’ll join a Newcastle team that have been held scoreless in 10 top flight matches, scored just 21 Premier League goals this campaign – better than only league punching bag Huddersfield – and sits just above the relegation with 24 points. He’s very much seen as the club’s new potential saviour.

Surely part of Almirón’s appeal to the Magpies is his goal scoring knack and ability to help the club stave off relegation, and rightly so. But to expect an immediate impact from the 24-year old fresh out of the MLS over the final 13 league matches of the season would be unfair, and the club and their supporters must be patient with the new man.

Almirón isn’t likely to settle in too fast.

For starters, the versatile forward simply may not be match fit. It’s been more than two months since Almirón and Atlanta United dispatched the Portland Timbers in the MLS Cup final on December 8th, and Newcastle’s latest addition has not played competitive football since.

Considering this, it may benefit both Almirón and Benítez’s side to hold off on a debut against Wolves and wait for a match following the coming cup break, such as Newcastle’s meetings with Huddersfield and Burnley on February 23rd and 26th respectively. A lot can be lost during an extended period off the pitch, and the more time given to fall in and regain fitness the sharper he’ll be in the early days of his Premier League career.

Possibly an even greater obstacle, though, for the young forward is the challenge of adjusting to Premier League football. Few others leagues around the world rival the competition, physicality and rigorous fixture schedules that England’s top flight offers, and the MLS is most certainly not among them.

It’s a gap that’s hindered others in the past.

In the brief history of attackers making the jump from the MLS, almost none have succeed early on; most never really succeeded at all. Clint Dempsey mustered just two goals over his first 12 appearances at Fulham in 2007, struggling early before emerging as a talented forward over his Premier League career. Others, like Landon Donovan – two goals over two loan stints with Everton –and Brek Shea – one goal over three seasons with Stoke City and Barnsley – simply never found their footing after success in the United States.

Almirón may be greater than each of his MLS predecessors in the Premier League, but their inability to perform early on provides a window of what the young forward’s first few months at Newcastle may well look like.

If there has ever been an attacking MLS import with a chance go onto a fruitful Premier League career, it’s Almirón. He possesses the skill and playmaking ability to exist and thrive in the league, and will only get better with time and development. But with the remaining time left in this 2018/19 season, his potential may not be on display, and to expect it to be is unreasonable.

Newcastle have a talented attacker on their hands, they’ll just have to be patient with him.

Potential consequences: Arsenal’s meagre summer transfer budget

[ad_pod ]

According to The Mirror, Arsenal shall only have an initial budget of £40million with which to strengthen their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Given that the Gunners’ apparent ambition is to battle their way back into the Champions League fold – and remain there – it would take something close to the miraculous for Unai Emery, the club’s director of football Raul Sanllehi, and the rest of the recruitment team at the Emirates Stadium to achieve that goal with only £40million to spend.

The market has inflated vastly in recent years. For example, last summer, Everton agreed to pay an initial £35million – which could rise to £50million – for the relatively unproven young attacker, Richarlison.

In the January window just gone by, Bournemouth put a £75million price tag on Callum Wilson, as reported by the Daily Star.

Check out the below above to see football played as you’ve never seen it before… in a maze!

To think that a club of Arsenal’s stature could only afford just over half of Bournemouth’s star striker is quite remarkable. As is the fact that Emery was forced to confess in January that the club were only in a position to conduct loan deals during the winter window.

If it is true that the Gunners will only have £40million to spend in the summer, Emery and the Arsenal hierarchy face some huge decisions and the consequences could be massive. We take a look a the potential ramifications below…

Club sanction big sales

Soccer Football – FA Cup Fourth Round – Arsenal v Manchester United – Emirates Stadium, London, Britain – January 25, 2019 Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi reacts REUTERS/Hannah McKay

In order to bolster their meagre funds, Arsenal could sell heavily. There are certainly a number of first team players that Emery could afford to be without.

26-year-old centre-back Shkodran Mustafi is simply a liability who must be moved on. With a Transfermarkt valuation of £27million, he’s a player who could quickly be seen as more valuable to the club in the market than on the pitch.

Ageing players such as Laurent Koscielny, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Nacho Monreal could all be replaced, whilst the likes of Carl Jenkinson, Mohamed Elneny and playmaker Mesut Ozil are seemingly already considered surplus to requirements. All could fetch a price in the summer, with Mkhitaryan and Ozil potentially capable of attracting huge bids.

It would be a display of ruthlessness seldom associated with the north London club, but shifting out so much deadwood in a single summer would go a long way towards making the club’s transfer budget look decidedly healthier.

Emery places faith in the young

With so many experienced players potentially moving on, Emery would need to to invest his faith in the club’s current crop of talented youngsters. Fan sentiment would automatically be on-side with these academy graduates, many of whom have already shown flashes of quality.

Reiss Nelson has impressed on loan in the Bundesliga, whilst the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Eddie Nketiah and Joe Willock have caught the eye during Europa League and Carabao Cup outings. Nelson, particularly, seems more than ready to start contributing to first team matters.

Giving these raw but enthusiastic and improving talents a greater role in the first team next season would alleviate the need for many new recruits to arrive in the summer.

Arsenal take risks in the market

It gets harder and harder with each passing year to turn up cheap, undiscovered gems, but it can still be done. Arsenal themselves pulled it off last summer with the £8million capture of 19-year-old midfielder Matteo Guendouzi from second tier French outfit Lorient.

Guendouzi has been a revelation in the Premier League this season, quickly becoming a fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium and a vital member of Emery’s squad.

His arrival could form the blueprint for how Arsenal operate in coming transfer windows; identifying young, unproven talents at smaller clubs who have the capacity to make the step up and can be brought in for a small price. However, this is a strategy loaded with risk, as so often such young prospects fail to progress or realise their potential. Filling a squad with players who fall into this category could have disastrous consequences.

What’s more, the imminent departure of Arsenal’s head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat – lauded for his knack for spotting exciting young talents – could rob Arsenal of their ability to pull off more Guendouzi-esque captures.
