Leeds fans pay tribute to Bill Fotherby

[ad_pod ]Many Leeds United fans have paid tribute to, and shared their memories of, Bill Fotherby, who was the Elland Road club’s managing director in the late 70s, 80s and 90s.Fotherby passed away in Tenerife on Tuesday night, at the age of 88. He is well-remembered by the Whites for the instrumental role he played in bringing success and silverware to the club in the early 90s.Fotherby joined the board of the Yorkshire club in 1978 and eventually became chairman Leslie Silver’s partner in crime. He went on to revolutionise the way the club was run.

In 1988, following the sacking of Billy Bremner, Fotherby convinced Howard Wilkinson to leave Hillsborough and take up the hot seat at Elland Road. With the support of Silver and Fotherby, Wilkinson was able to get Leeds promoted into the top tier in 1990.

The crowning glory came in 1992, when the manager’s side won the top flight title – he remains the last English manager to achieve the feat, which was only made possible by Fotherby.

His influence cannot be overstated, and he has earned the mantle of legend at Leeds. Following his passing, many supporters have taken to Twitter to pay their respects…

Diangana makes most of West Ham chance

[ad_pod ]

Grady Diangana has made the most of his chance in the West Ham United first-team thus far this season.

The 20-year-old made his breakthrough at the beginning of the campaign, playing a single minute against Manchester United in the 3-1 win at the London Stadium.

Just two games later, Diangana played 50 minutes in the pressure cooker of a London derby against Tottenham Hotspur and has since played twice against Manchester City, and provided an assist versus Burnley.

His appearances have been sporadic and he has yet to play 90 minutes for the Irons in the Premier League.

Diangana did finish the game against Birmingham City in the FA Cup, however, as the club won 2-0, and also scored twice in the EFL Cup win over Macclesfield Town, before again finishing the game against Spurs in the same competition, this time in a 3-1 defeat.

This is the correct way to bed in young talent.

Diangana is a pacy, skilful winger and has the ability to be a star for the club, but he is not having the world loaded onto his shoulders.

Instead, he is being slowly blooded by manager Manuel Pellegrini, who clearly knows that he has a genuinely talented young player on his books.

Diangana has been capped by England at Under-20 level and is primed to become another superbly exciting academy graduate in east London, following in the footsteps of Declan Rice by becoming a first-team regular.

Pellegrini is treading softly, but the youngster’s boundless potential will surely be impossible to ignore for much longer.

The Chalkboard: Hasenhuttl needs to make big changes vs Fulham, Sims starts

[ad_pod ]

Southampton’s woes continued as two defensive lapses cost them in their 2-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, and big changes are needed when Saints host fellow relegation battlers Fulham at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.

On the chalkboard

Ralph Hasenhuttl chose to stick with the five-at-the-back system for the trip to north London, but within 17 minutes the visitors had a mountain to climb as they found themselves 2-0 behind, with a misunderstanding between Jack Stephens and goalkeeper Angus Gunn leading to the second.

The result left the south coast outfit in 18th position and one point from safety, and realistically they will know that they need to beat the struggling Cottagers in midweek – especially with fixtures against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur to follow.

With Danny Ings already out and Michael Obafemi seemingly suffering another hamstring issue on his comeback against the Gunners, Hasenhuttl doesn’t exactly have a plethora of attacking options ahead of the crucial clash.

What needs to happen?

Firstly, the Austrian manager needs to stick with what he did at the start of the second-half at the Emirates, by ditching Stephens and playing with a back four.

Southampton don’t need to play five in defence against a team they need to take the game to from the very first minute on Wednesday, and in truth the Saints boss should go with the his preferred 4-2-2-2 formation he has used at previous clubs.

One man who should be included in the starting line-up from the start is Josh Sims, even if he has only been named in the 18-man squad in the Premier League on two occasions this term following a less than successful loan spell with Reading.

With the 21-year-old scoring twice and assisting two more for the U23s in their 6-2 Premier League Cup win against Notts County on Friday, he deserves a chance to put a leaky Fulham defence under pressure from kick-off.

That would allow Nathan Redmond and Sims to play in the advanced positions out wide, with Shane Long, Charlie Austin and Sam Gallagher fighting it out for the two centre-forward spots.

Injury News: Sam Winnall is back in contention for Sheffield Wednesday

[ad_pod ]Sheffield Wednesday are set to take on Blackburn Rovers at Hillsborough on Saturday. Victory would see the Owls maintain their charge for a play-off place and would preserve Steve Bruce’s unbeaten record as the club’s manager.ÂWednesday may be set for a boost in the form of Sam Winnall’s condition too, with Bruce confirming that the striker’s return to full fitness is imminent.Who would make a combined Sheffield XI? Ingood Nick makes his picks in the video below…

What he said

Speaking in his recent press conference, as quoted by the Owls’ official Twitter account, Bruce said: “Sam Winnall is certainly in the reckoning. He’s a very good striker at this level, touch wood he is over his injury and he can have a run in the team.”

Ready to have an impact

The 28-year-old forward has been out of action for much of the last two seasons, but has featured occasionally from the bench for the Owls in recent weeks. However, Bruce’s words indicate that the No. 11 could finally be ready for a return to the starting XI.

That would give Wednesday a welcome boost in the final third. If the club are serious about vying for the play-offs, and promotion, this season, then they will need all of the firepower they can get.

At his best, Winnall could be a very useful player, and if he can hit the ground running once fully fit then he could have a very positive impact at Hillsborough before the end of the campaign.

Trippier is the perfect replacement for Coleman

Everton fans will all agree that Marco Silva needs to make a number of changes in the summer transfer window, with a number of players getting on with age and consistency being an issue.

The Toffees will still have their sights set on securing a European spot in the Premier League this season but their lack of consistency throughout the current campaign has meant that they’re now forced to chase the teams above.

It’s safe to say that one area that needs improving is at right-back as Seamus Coleman is getting on with age and Jonjo Kenny hasn’t exactly had much of an impact on proceedings.

Interestingly, the Toffees are reportedly (as per The Sun) lining up a £20 million bid for Kieran Trippier.

It’s believed that Spurs are willing to offload the Englishman this summer, which is perfect for the Toffees as they won’t have to look very far to find a potential replacement for Coleman.

Mauricio Pochettino has transformed Trippier into one of the best right-backs in the Premier League since he arrived from Burnley, but his performances have dropped slightly in the current campaign.

Although, he could be the perfect man to line up for Everton at right-back as he loves to get forward and whips in a very dangerous ball into the box. Also, he’s solid in defence and possesses the ability to snuff out attacks with ease, which is something that has let the Toffees down at times this season.

Indeed, Goodison Park would be delighted to see an attack-minded right-back who has the ability to influence the game in the final third, as they’ve adored Coleman’s bursts down the right-hand side over the years.

Marcel Brands shouldn’t face any great difficulties in getting a deal done for the 28-year-old and £20 million seems like a very reasonable price for an accomplished right-back.

Liverpool remain insistent on Piotr Zielinski

Liverpool fans will be feeling tense as the Premier League season starts to enter its final stages, especially with how Manchester City are currently performing. The Reds will know that they can ill-afford any defeats at this moment and will need to ensure they take maximum points from their remaining nine fixtures.

There is no denying that Jurgen Klopp has one of the best defences in the top-flight, however, there have been some doubts in recent games about their ability to find the back of the net and create enough opportunities for their forward line, which may have led to renewed speculation about a former transfer target.

What’s the News?

According to a report by Calciomercato, Liverpool are understood to remain interested in Napoli’s Piotr Zielinski and ‘insist’ on the player.

The Poland international midfielder is thought to remain on the Premier League outfit’s radar despite being believed to be edging closer to a new deal with the Serie A outfit.

The Anfield outfit’s interest in the 24-year-old is thought to have begun in 2016 following an impressive European Championship tournament with his country, however, they missed out on him with Napoli acquiring him.

The Verdict:

If one thing is for certain regarding the Poland international, it is that the links to the Premier League side do not appear to be going away any time soon and he is the type of player that could certainly bring something of value to Klopp’s side.

The 24-year-old is one of the hottest midfielders in European football, with his pace, vision and the ability to pick out a pass having impressed a number of onlookers, including former boss Maurizio Sarri, who once dubbed him as the next Kevin De Bruyne.

“He is an absolute talent, he also has great physical skills and if he grows in the level of personality, he can play in any area of the court, the new De Bruyne,” he told Tuttomercatoweb at the beginning of 2018.

With Zielinski understood to be closing in on a new deal at Napoli, it would seem incredibly unlikely for Liverpool to sign him, even if they do insist on him, making the claim a little hard to believe.

Liverpool fans, what do you make of the constant speculation surrounding a move for Zielinski and do you think a move will ever happen for him? Join in with the discussion below by letting us know what you think.

Miguel Almiron’s home debut poses well for his future at St James’s Park

The long-awaited home debut of new signing Miguel Almiron on Saturday would certainly have left Newcastle United fans optimistic and excited about the potential heights the player can achieve under the watchful eye of Rafa Benitez.

Almiron started on the left wing against Huddersfield Town with Christian Atsu dropping to bench as Benitez opted for a four-man midfield, with Salomon Rondon leading the line.

But, the former MLS star soon showed why the Magpies broke the bank for his signature when he almost opened the scoring the 12th minute.

Almiron was put in on goal by a brilliant Isaac Hayden pass, leaving him one-on-one with goalkeeper Jonas Lossl after sprinting away from the Terriers’ defenders. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old hit the woodwork, but it was an early sign to the Newcastle faithful of what he is capable of.

Almiron came close again in the 30th minute of the match after silky footwork left him in space on the left edge of the box before he unleashed a shot which was cleared of the line by the visitors.

Overall, the Paraguayan proved just why he’s the type of player the Magpies have been longing for with his direct style of play and ability to drive forward with pace and skill.

He also showed on Saturday what a hardworking player he is on the field and the distance he covered both in attack and while tracking back should be really pleasing for Benitez.

Despite it being Huddersfield, the whole Newcastle team looked confident from the very first minute to the full-time whistle, because of the energy that Almiron brought to the team.

For the first time in years, Newcastle now have a player who can cause proper problems to opposition teams because of the threat he poses with his pace and acceleration.

Opponents will now constantly have to monitor his movement on the pitch by not giving him space to run into, otherwise he will punish you.

So, it appears as if Ashley’s summer splurge has provided Newcastle United with a potential St James’ Park hero, as the South American is already showing promising signs.
