Newcastle fans react as journalist crushes reports of a takeover breakthrough

[ad_pod ]

An update from The Evening Chronicle’s Mark Douglas has Newcastle fans worried that the potential takeover of the club is in jeopardy.

Since The Sun claimed Newcastle had been officially sold to Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed Al Nehayan, there have been hundreds of conflicting reports and rumours regarding a takeover bid.

The Sun seem to have massively jumped the gun by saying the sale was all but done, but a statement released by the Bin Zayed group this week suggests the wheels are in motion.

And reports out of the Middle East had fans excited during the week, claiming that Friday would bring big news to Tyneside.

Douglas though, who is the publishing editor for The Chronicle, has quashed the reports of a big breakthrough on Friday with one simple tweet.

Fans are now fretting over the validity of the reports on the takeover in general, especially due to the fact that the entire ordeal is wasting the final days of Rafael Benitez’s contract with the club.

Nottingham Forest: Joao Carvalho’s decision will make or break play-off hopes

Clearly, it’s a big season for Nottingham Forest in 2019/20 as the legendary Martin O’Neill looks to take a side he won so much with as a player up the Championship table and potentially into a play-off spot at the very least. To that end, all this means they can’t afford to lose linked-away Joao Carvalho this summer.

Indeed, the Portuguese attacking midfielder had an impressive 2018-19 campaign, scoring four and assisting eight in his 38 league appearances. His 1.2 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per game could suggest he’s improve massively with better players in front of him, with the 22-year-old clearly possessing an attacking talent.

No one’s doubting the fact that he does need to improve his end product to really make the most of his ability to pick a key pass or dribble at defenders, but producing four goals and eight assists in a side who struggled for consistency for much of the campaign does hint at an exciting kind of talent.

However Greek outlet DNA Sports, via Nottinghamshire Live, have reported Olympiacos have the player marked as a ‘favourite’ of their’s and they want him to join them this summer. To put it simply, that’d be a huge blow for Martin O’Neill ahead of such a big season.

The assist tally isn’t too bad, but if he had a stand-out striker in front of him to get on the end of his key passes, there’s every chance we’ll see that number rise. Currently, he’s rated at £9m on Transfermarkt, but he’d potentially be worth a whole lot more after another season at Forest, especially if there’s some kind of resurgence from the Reds.

Without him at the City Ground next campaign, they’d have to buy a replacement and hope he blossoms into the player that Joao Carvalho is becoming. That’s a huge risk and certainly a massive loss after having the ideal man in their lap. Yes, keeping him long-term might be a pipe dream but this just seems like a summer too early.

Make him the focal point of O’Neill’s side, see how he gets on, and perhaps look to sell if that elusive promotion continues to evade the club.

Forest just can’t afford to lose one of their most promising talents this summer.

Reds fans take to Twitter to mark Fabinho’s one-year anniversary at Anfield

Just two days after the bitter disappointment of losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid last year, Liverpool were quick to give their loyal fans a bit of a sweetener. The Reds announced that they had signed Fabinho from AS Monaco in a £39m deal, and after a slow start to his Anfield career, the midfielder has well and truly become one of the mainstays of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

To mark the Brazilian’s arrival, the Reds posted a video homage on Twitter to the day they signed the 25-year-old, with the caption ‘one year ago today…’ After being predominantly kept out of the limelight by Klopp in the opening months of the season, Fabinho well and truly stamped his authority on the team come the turn of the year. Taking to the Premier League’s more intense physical demands like a duck to water, the signing has proven to be another masterstroke by those on the red half of Merseyside.

Upon hearing of the landmark day, Reds fans took to social media to sing the midfielder’s praises, and labelled the Brazil international as ‘unreal’. Some even suggested that Fabinho could himself as the ‘best defensive midfielder in the world’, and that after the heartbreak of Kiev last year, the signing represented ‘clever business’.

Huge potential: Leeds fans talk up Jack Clarke with Spurs move looming

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been talking up the ability of Jack Clarke even though a move to Tottenham could be on the cards.

In an attempt to learn more about their potential signing a Spurs fan asked Leeds fans their thoughts on the 18-year-old on Twitter.

The teenager has been a revelation at the Yorkshire club this season, making 24 appearances in the league for the Whites.

The overwhelming view of United fans is that Clarke has an incredible amount of potential, and it’s hard to disagree. His performances on the wing this season have been breathtaking at times, and his form has seen him linked with a £20m move to the London club.

Certain supporters stated that they would be gutted if Clarke left this summer, and it’s easy to see why.

It remains to be seen whether or not the youngster will join the Champions League finalists, but if he does they will certainly be getting a very talented player.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Sunderland fans laugh off Barnsley links to O’Nien

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Sunderland fans have been running the rule over a very dubious transfer rumour, as Barnsley reportedly want Luke O’Nien.

Sunderland had their hearts broken at Wembley for the second time this season last weekend, but the majority of fans are feeling optimistic about the coming campaign.

While it will of course take place in the third tier of English football, the Black Cats have a new owner, a new direction and a renewed sense of unity between players and fans.

One player who has formed a fantastic relationship with the fans due to his tireless work rate on the pitch and excellent fan engagement off it is O’Nien, who joined the club last summer from Wycombe.

According to a rather dubious looking report from Barnsley FC Rumours on Twitter, the Tykes are set to agree a £750,000 fee to sign O’Nien.

Black Cats fans have unsurprisingly found humour in the report, as that is a rather small transfer fee for one of their best players.

Kyle Walker claims England are ready for the Nations League

[ad_pod ]Kyle Walker has had a long season, starting way back at the beginning of August with the Community Shield. He played in almost every game as Manchester City sealed an unprecedented domestic treble, producing some immaculate football in the process. Now that his club season is over, however, attention has turned to two more games with England, as Gareth Southgate’s side look to secure the first piece of silverware of his reign after coming bitterly close to doing so during last summer’s World Cup.

Walker appears confident in his sides’ chances but to win the Nations League, England must overcome the Netherlands. Revived under Ronald Koeman after failing to make Russia 2018, Oranje boast the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay.

Was Gareth Southgate wrong to overlook potential England stars from Palace, Leicester and Saints? Fan discuss “big club bias” in the video below…

The Three Lions were very impressive in their Nations League group though. England put three past Spain in their backyard and came from behind to beat Croatia at Wembley to seal a spot in the semi-finals.

Walker – who has got used to winning trophies in his time at City – certainly seems confident about this Three Lions side, claiming they’re ready for the Nations League and praising the training camp England have put together.

There’s no guarantee Walker will play a key role for England in this tournament though, despite being such a crucial member of Southgate’s World Cup team. Southgate has since changed formations, making Walker’s centre-back berth redundant, and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has emerged as a potentially superior option.

Leeds’ transfer policy is brilliant as it incorporates both short and long-term aspiratuons

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United have been linked with a vast number of signings already this summer.

But in terms of the players they are targeting, they are striking a great balance between aiming for short-term and long-term success.

Leeds are a team that need to perform well next season, but fortunately, they also aren’t neglecting the long-term future of the club.

Andrea Radrizzani has operated largely on a sell before you buy policy, and it has been speculated that that model may be followed again this summer.

But it’s more than just their financial future, Leeds aren’t only targeting players who will get them promoted next season, they are looking at potential stars who could carry the team forward down the line.

The Yorkshire club have been linked with players who have the potential to make a significant impact in their push for the top two this season. The likes of Harry Wilson and Helder Costa have proven themselves to be top players at Championship level with their goal contribution records, but the Whites have also been looking at young prospects such as Cody Drameh and Rafa Mujica.

As long as the Whites’ youth team is being headed up by Carlos Corberan these players have a great chance of progressing to become members of the first team. Last season we saw both Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton become critical components in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad as they made plenty of appearances in important games.

If the sell before you buy policy is to continue at Elland Road, then this may be the best way to go about it. Clarke is now being touted as a £20m player, and these youngsters that the Whites are looking at bringing in could also be sold for millions of pounds once they mature.

If Leeds can purchase and develop youngster at this rate it will allow for the bigger-name signings like Patrick Bamford and Kiko Casilla to come in, all while keeping their net spend as low as possible.

Change of approach: Leicester would be making an intelligent move in signing Rodriguez

[ad_pod ]

According to The Telegraph, Leicester are considering a move for West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez as the club look to improve their options in attack.

What’s the word?

Rodriguez was in stunning form for the Baggies throughout 2018/19 as he found the back of the net 22 times en route to the play-offs.

However, he could now be on the move a year after his future was initially in doubt.

Last summer Burnley had a bid rejected for the forward, whilst Bournemouth also showed interest in the player.

Leicester are the latest club to take an interest, per The Telegraph, who claim they are considering triggering his £5m release clause.

Change of policy on the cards?

Barring the 2013/14 season when the 29-year-old found the net 15 times in the Premier League, he’s never been too consistent at the highest level.

But despite that, it would be a smart signing for Leicester, particularly given the price tag.

With Islam Slimani looking like he may leave and Shinji Okazaki being released, it’s clear the Foxes will need attacking reinforcements and more back up for Jamie Vardy.

In signing Rodriguez it would signal a clear change in transfer policy from the Foxes. Slimani arrived for £29m in 2016 whilst Kelechi Iheanacho arrived a year later for £25m.

The pair of them have been extremely disappointing and, after wasting money on such expensive signings, signing Rodriguez for just £5m would display an intelligent new approach.

Given Vardy is the club’s star striker, they don’t need someone with a similarly prolific record to come in and challenge him.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

Instead, they need a cheaper rotation option. By bringing in Rodriguez, Brendan Rodgers would strike gold in this regard and it would be a refreshing change of policy from what’s gone before in previous transfer windows.

Bringing in the West Brom man wouldn’t be particularly exciting, but it would show that Leicester are beginning to learn from their mistakes.

This can only be seen as a positive.
