Big PictureIt’s hard for the average fan to find much significance in this game, but Kolkata Knight Riders would disagree. Their chances of progressing to the playoffs are mighty slim at the moment, but it’s still mathematically possible. And they have been keeping that flickering hope alive by winning their previous two matches, while others have done their bit for them, too – Mumbai Indians came from behind to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Kings XI Punjab, who are also trying to fight their way out of a very tight corner, handed Royal Challengers Bangalore their first defeat of the year at the Chinnaswamy stadium. Knight Riders have to win their remaining two matches now, and do it with as big a margin as possible to boost their net run rate, and hope Sunrisers and Royal Challengers keep losing.Knight Riders will be glad that one of their two upcoming must-wins is against Pune Warriors. Bottom-of-the-table Warriors have long since been out of this tournament, and have looked clueless more often than not. For them, this match is all about preventing their losing streak from extending into double digits: they have lost nine in a row since showing so much promise by beating Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. Considering they have lost 33 out of 44 IPL matches (10 wins, 1 no result) overall, and 21 off the previous 23, any victory however insignificant would be most welcome.Form guideKolkata Knight Riders: WWLWL (most recent first)
Pune Warriors: LLLLLIn the spotlightHow will the pitch at the JSCA International Stadium play? On IPL debut, the Ranchi track proved to be quite hard for Knight Riders and Royal Challengers to handle, with the latter scratching to 115 for 9 before the ‘hosts’ got across the line with only four balls to spare. While Murali Kartik said it was difficult to judge with its slowness and two-paced nature, Jacques Kallis said the surface wasn’t quite fit for T20 cricket. Even Royal Challengers franchise owner Siddharth Mallya was critical of the pitch, tweeting “The JSCA int’ stadium in Ranchi is simply outstanding…Best in India after Chinnaswamy by far…Shame about the wicket tho…” But curator Shyam Bahadur Singh, while defending the pitch, has confirmed that the same strip will be used on Wednesday; the teams, and the fans in Ranchi, will be hoping it plays a bit better this time round.Stats and trivia Pune Warriors’ win/loss ratio in the IPL is a woeful 0.30. That’s far worse than even the two now-defunct franchises, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Deccan Chargers, who had ratios of 0.75 and 0.63 respectively After four matches, Warriors are yet to beat Knight Riders Fourteen games into their season, none of the Knight Riders batsmen have an average of 30 or more (three matches minimum)Quotes”Today we didn’t make enough runs. Last match we went for too many runs in the death. It’s a mixture of a lot of things.”
“Be it any situation, we as a team enter the ground thinking about a victory. We do not play to participate.”

MacDonald-Gay powers Surrey revival as Essex succumb again

Allround performance lifts visitors in absence of senior England stars

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay19-May-2025Kalea Moore and Ryana MacDonald-Gay both hit their maiden half-centuries for Surrey to maintain the county’s recent revival in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup women’s competition with victory over Essex. The pair dug Surrey out of trouble at 117 for six, with Moore posting 66 from 70 balls and MacDonald-Gay 57 from 77 in their partnership of 113 from 135.That enabled the visitors to total 259 for nine at Chelmsford, despite Eva Gray’s return of five for 52 – the Essex seamer’s second five-wicket haul of the tournament. Jo Gardner’s gutsy unbeaten 73 from 46, which included a string of sixes, almost snatched an improbable victory for the home side – but she was left stranded as MacDonald-Gay (three for 52) claimed the last two wickets in as many balls to seal Surrey’s success.Missing several top-order batters due to England commitments, Surrey were forced to rejig their line-up and lost makeshift opener Phoebe Franklin in the first over after being put in, courtesy of a miscue to midwicket.Essex squandered three opportunities to remove Priyanaz Chatterji – two of them off Gray – before the bowler finally pinned her leg before for 21, but Amy Hunter provided the innings with some impetus. The Ireland international’s run-a-ball knock of 29 ended when she was lbw to Sophia Smale, but Alice Davidson-Richards (32 from 41) quickly settled into her stride, using her feet to the spinners and finding gaps in the field. However, Davidson-Richards was among a trio to depart in the space of 18 balls, scooping Esmae MacGregor to mid-on – but Moore and MacDonald-Gray rebuilt with steady, sensible batting.Moore led the way, reaching her half-century from 60 deliveries just after Smale had failed to hold a well-struck return drive and her partner soon followed suit, crashing the left-armer over midwicket for six. Both batters eventually holed out in Gray’s second spell, with Alexa Stonehouse hauling Surrey’s total above 250 before becoming the seamer’s fifth victim in the final over of the innings.Grace Scrivens gave her side’s chase a positive start, cutting Stonehouse for four and the Essex skipper had advanced to 15 from 17 when she was run out by Emma Jones’ pinpoint throw from cover. The home side also lost Lissy Macleod, caught top-edging a sweep off Tilly Corteen-Coleman in the powerplay and regrouped through Smale and Ariana Dowse’s steadfast partnership of 91 from 117.With the required rate hovering at around a run a ball, Surrey prised out both set batters in quick succession as Dowse (44 from 70) miscued a pull off Franklin and Smale (42 from 63) was castled by Gregory. The leg-spinner (four for 57) scythed through Essex’s middle order – aided by Jones’ impressive reaction catch at midwicket to dismiss Amara Carr – only for Gardner and Kate Coppack to threaten a late comeback with a ninth-wicket stand of 54 from 42.But it was not enough as MacDonald-Gay removed Coppack (16 from 22) and Abtaha Maqsood to end Essex’s hopes.

T&T hammer Guyana for third straight title

Trinidad & Tobago earned the unique honour of winning the Caribbean Twenty20 for the third successive year, and their fourth in total, after they trampled over a hapless Guyana with a nine-wicket victory

The Report by Nagraj Gollapudi21-Jan-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsTrinidad & Tobago celebrate their emphatic win over Guyana in the Caribbean T20 final•WICB MediaTrinidad & Tobago earned the unique honour of winning the Caribbean Twenty20 for the third successive year, and their fourth title overall, after they trampled over a hapless Guyana with a nine-wicket victory. Anointed the favourites from the moment this final edition of the tournament began on January 6, the defending champions lived up to their reputation with a resounding victory.Kieron Pollard, promoted up the order, swept a massive six over wide long-on for the winning runs, threw his bat aside and stripped off his red Trinidad & Tobago shirt to display a white vest on which was written: “Congratulations T&T team. We have done it. I’m proud.” His team-mate Dwayne Bravo, meanwhile, cut short the victory lap to join the DJ on the performing deck to sing and dance to the popular Soca numbers “Differentology” and “Bacchanalist”, thus adding to the carnival preparations gathering back in Port of Spain and rest of the island.Chasing a modest 117 for victory, T&T started in dominant fashion, racing to 25 after three overs as the opening pair of Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis declared their positive intent. Guyana should have had Lewis early on, however, when he miscued a pull against a short delivery from Ronsford Beaton, one of the most impressive fast bowlers to have emerged from the last two weeks. Beaton charged forward to take the catch in his follow through but wicketkeeper Derwin Christian advanced simultaneously from behind the wicket and both men collided, allowing Lewis, who had run virtually to the other end, to return safely back to his crease.Next ball, Lewis, playing his second match of the tournament, upper-cut Beaton for the first six of T&T’s innings. Lewis meted out further punishment to Steven Jacobs as 20 runs came from the fifth over to bring up the T&T 50, but Beaton got his man when he sent down a short-pitched delivery that Lewis try to duck only to present an easy catch. The Guyana players flashed nervous smiles, perhaps realising the writing was already on the wall. Simmons and Pollard ensured that it was, wrapping up the chase with almost eight overs to spare.Earlier, there had been a lot of emphasis placed on the toss, as only twice in eleven matches played on the St Lucia leg of this tournament had the team batting first won. Veerasammy Permaul, the Guyana captain, called heads, lost and was asked to bat. However, the way the evening panned out, such factors were unlikely to have made any difference to T&T, as they dominated the contest throughout.T&T were coming into the match after a four-day break but they were not slow to regain their rhythm. Guyana’s batsmen were completely at sea against the combination of aggressive fast bowling from Shannon Gabriel and Rayad Emrit, backed up by the wily spin of Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine. It was Gabriel, with his bounding run-up, who clocked consistently blistering pace to put Guyana under the cosh straightaway. After taking just a single from Gabriel’s first over, Christian powerfully drove Badree for the first boundary off the seventh ball of the match. Two balls later, trying to hit straight and over the bowler’s head, Christian mistimed to mid-off. Emrit was the catcher but in Badree’s next over he made a mess of a simple chance from Trevon Griffith, the other Guyana opener, who had attempted a straight hoick.Ramnaresh Sarwan continued his terrible form, falling prey to an familiar ploy. Prompted by Dwayne Bravo, Gabriel adjusted his lengths, pitching more back of length and short against Sarwan, who lost control of his stroke on the charge and top-edged to midwicket. In the same over, Gabriel attacked the ribs of new man Narsingh Deonarine with a lifting delivery, the batsman beaten by the pace to be caught behind.By the time the fielding restrictions were removed after the sixth over, Guyana were 23 for 3. At the halfway mark, they had limped to 49 for 3, with just two fours coming from the bat. It was not the first time Guyana had started off in such sluggish fashion. Throughout the tournament their top order had failed to perform consistently. If anything short cameos and spirited partnerships had carried them to the summit clash. In Guyana’s play-off win over Jamaica, Griffith and Christopher Barnwell had raised a match-turning 79-run run partnership for the third wicket. Less than 24 hours later the pair were once again attempting another rescue act. On 19, Griffith attempted to slog Emrit down the ground but gave another chance to the bowler, who allowed the ball to bounce out of his hands once again. “This guy doesn’t want to be here,” was Ramdin’s response to another life for Griffith and although the batsman slog-swept Narine for a six in the next over he was eventually run out by a Pollard direct hit from short midwicket while going for a tight single. After that steadying, 61-run partnership, the onus was now entirely on Barnwell. However, he was finding it hard to connect and he departed for 32 in the 17th over, top-edging Emrit to point. Two balls later, Leon Johnson was caught in the deep by Simmons: Guyana had lost two wickets for just one run. Although 11 runs came off the final over, Guyana knew it was too little and too late.Guyana, who won the tournament in 2006 and 2010, were playing their fourth match in as many days and were running low on fuel. Clearly they had not had enough time to chalk out a workable strategy, something T&T managed to do convincingly. Possessing as many as seven of West Indies’ World Twenty20-winning squad, T&T had the experience, firepower, nous and balance to win the tournament. In the end they were the deserving winners.

Struggling Tamil Nadu made to follow on

Tamil Nadu went into the final day of their Ranji Trophy match against Delhi in the worst possible situation: following on at the Feroz Shah Kotla, against a bowling attack that already has first-innings points in its pocket

Tamil Nadu went into the final day of their Ranji Trophy match against Delhi in the worst possible situation: following on at the Feroz Shah Kotla, against a bowling attack that already has first-innings points in its pocket. Chasing Delhi’s total of 555, Tamil Nadu were all out for 226, astonishingly losing their last six wickets for only 39 runs, all after tea. At stumps, Tamil Nadu went off at 2 for 0 in their second innings. It was an excellent day for Delhi in the field, the bowlers making the most of conditions in the first session, producing a tight and disciplined performance in the second, and then cleaning up the Tamil Nadu’s first innings shortly before stumps.Along the way, they were helped by some erratic shot selection by the Tamil Nadu batsmen, with wickets falling off the first ball of the morning and the first ball after tea; first, the well-settled overnight batsman Baba Aparajith didn’t want to waste time settling in again nor did R Prasanna, after he had seized the title of swashbuckler from his partner Dinesh Karthik. Both batsmen were caught in the slip cordon: Aparajith, trying to cut Pawan Suyal, by Shikhar Dhawan at second slip and Prasanna slashing at Rajat Bhatia, trying to break free after being choked for runs all through the second session. Prasanna and Dinesh Karthik had put up 108 runs for the fifth wicket off 214 balls, the best and perhaps only significant partnership in the Tamil Nadu innings. After three wickets fell in the morning session, Tamil Nadu had needed mammoth stands to give themselves a chance of trying to go past Delhi’s first-innings score. It had taken four centuries from the Delhi batsmen to get to their total of 555; when S Badrinath fell nicking the nagging Sumit Narwal to keeper Puneet Bisht, the demands on Karthik and Prasanna became enormous. They started the second session with 21 runs in the first two overs, but Delhi’s bowlers then moved in; not with heavy leg-side fields but the tight lengths and unwavering lines around off-stump.The second session ended up being far from entertaining, with only 77 runs coming in 26 overs. Under the growing listlessness, Delhi’s bowlers’ pushed to bottle up the runs. Bhatia, coming in to bowl his brand of seam-up, sent down maiden after maiden in an 11-over spell. He conceded nine in the six overs in which the batsmen were able to get the ball past the fielders in the ring.Bhatia got Prasanna the first ball after tea and Karthik became Vikas Mishra’s only wicket all day, a stumping that could be called, depending on which side you were on, unlucky or lucky. Kartik rushed out against Mishra, the bowler held the ball back and then fired it in, Bisht almost made a meal of the stumping but was fortunate to have the ball hit his body and go onto the stumps. Tamil Nadu’s tail couldn’t hang around; certainly not after Suyal and Parvinder Awana got a chance to bowl with the new ball. Between them they bowled just under nine overs with the new ball, conceding 17 runs and cleaning out the last four batsmen. This had been Delhi’s match from the first morning, right from the time they were given the surprising gift of being sent in to bat after Tamil Nadu won the toss. Their batsmen have racked up partnerships and runs, and their bowlers put in the most dramatic of efforts. Now they have an outright win dangling like a carrot in front of them, going into the final day’s play.

Vai fazer a diferença.

Quem assumirá a '9'? Barbieri testa todas opções de ataque do Flamengo

MatériaMais Notícias

Lincoln, Fernando Uribe, Guerrero, Henrique Dourado…

– Vamos mostrar a estrutura do clube.
