Crystal Palace fans react as Wilfried Zaha is fined by the FA

[ad_pod ]Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter in frustrated fashion after Wilfried Zaha received a charge from the Football Association for improper conduct, following his dismissal against Southampton on Wednesday night (as per the BBC).The Ivory Coast international received just a yellow card initially after a spat with James Ward-Prowse, before being given his marching orders just seconds later after sarcastically clapping referee Andre Marriner’s decision.Zaha opened the scoring on the night, before Ward-Prowse incidentally equalised late in the second half. The 26-year-old’s dismissal appeared to be a build up of frustration of a number of fouls against him that weren’t given, having been upended four times on the night (via Whoscored) – that figure is merely the amount that were awarded by Marriner.Who is your club’s worst ever January signing? Cucurella would offer something similar to Rose at Spurs

In search of regular first-team football, Danny Rose made a loan move to Newcastle during the January transfer window.

Bearing in mind he made just 10 starts for Tottenham during the first half of the campaign, and with Euro 2020 just around the corner, it was a choice that made perfect sense. He has already started twice for the Magpies since making the switch to St. James’ Park on the left side of Steve Bruce’s back four.

With less than 18 months left on his contract in north London, though, the summer will represent something of a crossroads for the England international and his future is likely to depend on his performances in the North East. A good spell at Newcastle could see him force his way into Jose Mourinho’s plans, but a failure to make any kind of impression may very well see him thrown on the scrap heap, if he isn’t surplus to requirements already.

But his fate may already be decided.

According to Cadena Cope (via Mundo Deportivo), Spurs are already looking at a potential new left-back. They are reporting that Getafe’s Marc Cucurella, who is on loan from Barcelona, is on their radar. In a complex situation, Getafe will purchase 60% of his rights in the summer for €6m (£5m), with the Blaugrana holding on to the other 40% – he is said to have a release clause of €25m (£21m).

Getafe have been a surprise package in La Liga so far this campaign, currently lying just one point off fourth place. Their success has been based mostly on their sturdy back-line – they have conceded just 25 goals in 25 matches, with only Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid conceding less – and 21-year-old Cucurella has played a big role in that.

He has been included in the starting line-up for every league match to date, managing one goal and four assists in the process.

Rose, who made 22 appearances in the Premier League for Tottenham last term, managed three assists himself. From a creative point of view, Cucurella has a slight advantage over his potential rival – he has averaged 1.4 key passes per match, whilst Rose was only able to muster up one per match during the 2018/19 season. In all fairness, though, the latter has a significant advantage in terms of dribbles, leading with 1.3 compared to 0.7.

From a defensive point of view, it is the younger of the two who leads the way. The Spaniard has averaged 2.1 tackles per game so far this term, whilst the former Leeds United youngster managed 1.9 in the previous campaign.

With an average WhoScored rating of 6.89 compared to the Englishman’s 6.84, the youngster and Rose are evenly matched.

Both are solid defensively and, whilst Cucurella does have the advantage from a key passing point of view, Rose leads the way in terms of dribbles. In the short term, the Getafe man is unlikely to provide anything too different than what is already at Spurs’ disposal, but in the long-term, he has plenty of time to grow and polish his skills.

As Mourinho looks to put his stamp on this side in the summer – his first real opportunity to do so – Cucurella may be one to consider.

Rose has been a loyal servant in north London, making 210 appearances since 2007. However, there must come a point when sentimentality is replaced by realism, and it is unlikely that he has a future at the club.

Cucurella, meanwhile, is just starting out, and has already shown he can play an important role in a team that is fighting for a place in European competition. The time has come to move out with the old and in with the new.

Cardiff fans lavish praise on defender Sol Bamba

[ad_pod ]

Cardiff City earned a vital win over Southampton on Saturday.

The Bluebirds beat AFC Bournemouth last time out and climbed out of the relegation zone after a supremely important victory at St Mary’s Stadium.

Sol Bamba, the club captain, opened the scoring from a corner, only for Jack Stephens to peg Neil Warnock’s men back in the 91st minute.

The resilient Cardiff, however, would not be denied and a 93rd-minute strike from Kenneth Zohore ensured they took all three points.

The Wales-based club are now one point clear of the bottom three, with the beaten Saints replacing them at 18th.

Newcastle United, who face Wolves on Monday, are 17th and sit level on points with the Saints, though they have a marginally superior goal difference.

And Cardiff fans have hailed the heroics of Bamba, who celebrated with supporters after setting the tone for a victory that could prove season-defining come the end of May.

Mario Hermoso: Could be perfect for Eddie Howe’s exciting Bournemouth side

Bournemouth slipped to two consecutive defeats in the Premier League thanks to a Salomon Rondon brace away to Newcastle.

The Cherries fell behind after just seven minutes with Rondon beating Asmir Begovic after being picked out expertly by DeAndre Yedlin. The Venezuela international grabbed his second of the game not long after, heading home Kenedy’s cross to double the Magpies’ lead. Jefferson Lerma gave Bournemouth some hope on the stroke of half-time, but Eddie Howe’s men were unable to find an equaliser.

The result leaves Bournemouth in a respectable six-place in the Premier League despite losing their last two games. A potentially serious injury to Adam Smith in the first half will be a massive blow to Howe who also could be set to lose Nathan Ake in the January window. The Englishman is reportedly fearful of losing his star defender with clubs like Manchester United monitoring his situation at the Vitality Stadium.

To replace him, Howe should look to Espanyol star – Mario Hermoso. Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the 23-year-old graduated Real Madrid’s youth academy and was a regular in the B team before joining Espanyol on a free transfer last summer. Hermoso instantly became a crucial first-team player and ended the season with 22 La Liga appearances.

In the new campaign, Hermoso has taken his game to the next level and should be attracting plenty of interest as a result of his impressive performances. The Spaniard excels with the ball at his feet, making him ideal for Howe’s passing system and the perfect replacement for Ake. Hermoso is also a huge threat in the air and has two goals to his name already this season.

The youngster is growing in confidence with every game, and his form will undoubtedly give Spain manager Luis Enrique food for thought for his upcoming squad selections. If Real Madrid decide against resigning their former star, Bournemouth must bring him to England.

Charlton looking to hand Eunan O’Kane Leeds escape route

Leeds United outcast Eunan O’Kane could be handed an escape route from Elland Road by Charlton Athletic, according to reports.

What’s the word?

Frozen out of the first-team frame by Marcelo Bielsa, Eunan O’Kane looks likely to leave the Yorkshire giants before the loan window closes on August 31st and a move to League One stands as the most likely destination for the 28-year-old.

Speculation of Charlton Athletic’s interest in the midfielder has risen following comments from Addicks boss Lee Bowyer, who confirmed to Football.London he remains in the market for an addition in the heart of midfield.

This follows claims from The Yorkshire Evening Post that first stated Charlton’s interest in O’Kane, who was brought to Elland Road in 2016 under Garry Monk but has struggled for consistency at the club since and it now seems his time is coming to an end.

Should he go?

Given the fact that Leeds have far better options in the middle of the field and Bielsa clearly doesn’t rate O’Kane, it makes sense for the Peacocks to push to offload the 28-year-old this month – although it remains to be seen whether he’ll accept a drop down to League One.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”257599″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Leeds’ opening fixtures for the 201819 Championship season”]

O’Kane was a regular last season, making 32 Championship appearances, but the Republic of Ireland international has never netted a league goal for the Peacocks and has tumbled down the pecking order since Bielsa’s arrival.

With the likes of Mateusz Klich, Pablo Hernandez, Kalvin Phillips, Samuel Saiz and Lewis Baker to consider for a central role, it is clear that O’Kane is expendable.

Tottenham fans react to rumours linking Bale with sensational return

The transfer window may be closed, but that does not stop the rumour mill from churning.

A report in Don Balon has claimed that Real Madrid may be open to selling Gareth Bale next summer due to his regular injury woes.

The 28-year-old, who is currently out of action, has had eight calf problems during his four-year spell at the Bernabeu and he missed a large chunk of last season.

[ad_pod id=’leo-vegas’]

The report adds that Bale’s former club Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Manchester United, could be in for him come the end of the season, but the emotional pull of the North London outfit could be too much for the player to turn down.

The attacker spent six years at Spurs, developing into the player that earned a then-world record £85m move to Madrid.

Since 2013, Bale has won 10 trophies, including three Champions League crowns, the most recent of which from last season.

As expected, Tottenham fans have been digesting the news and there have been mixed responses.

Celtic fans overjoyed as the Hoops seal the title in style

Celtic have secured a sixth successive league title with a thumping 5-0 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle. It’s an incredible achievement, especially when you consider that up to this point they have gone the entire domestic season unbeaten.

Goals from Scott Sinclair, Stuart Armstrong and Patrick Roberts sealed the victory. Sinclair was in especially good form, scoring his first hat-trick since arriving in Scottish football.

If there were any thoughts of a struggle to get over the line, those were blown away in short order after the English winger scored two in two minutes halfway through the first half.

In the second half Celtic got even better, scoring two superb goals and a penalty to give supporters all around the world a very memorable day.

Confidence is so high at the club right now that supporters believe that the Hoops will go on to win an unprecedented 10 league titles in a row, making Scottish football history by surpassing their own record total in the 60s and 70s that was equalled by Rangers in the 80s and 90s.

They took to Twitter to celebrate a momentous day in the history of the club…

Five Euro 2016 Group C stars Man United should target this summer

Manchester United enter 2016-17 with a lot to look forward to after securing Jose Mourinho as their new manager.

Mourinho will need  to begin his reign in Manchester with an active and productive pre-season.

United are currently in their longest drought without a Premier League title, which is three years, and Mourinho will need to find strikers who will bolster a struggling United front line.

So what better place to search for solutions than the European Championships? In particular Group C, headlined by Germany and Poland, who have several top players that could fit in nicely at Old Trafford under Mourinho.

Here are the FIVE Group C players Mourinho must consider signing…

Robert Lewandowski

Just imagine combining the Bundesliga and French Ligue 1 top scorers on the front lines in the Premier League. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is reportedly ready to join the club and Robert Lewandowski is reportedly considering making a transfer to the Premier League too.

Such a possibility may come to fruition after all.

If United can sign Lewandowski, the Red Devils would catapult themselves to being favourites to win the Premier League. Lewandowski is one of the most feared strikers in the world, and arguably the best in this summer’s Euros.

United need scoring prowess after registering only 49 goals in the 2015-16 season and it’s safe to assume Lewandowski and Ibrahimovic would boost that total.

Leroy Sané

The Shalke winger is a prized German product and expected to join a top club in the next couple years.

The 20-year-old could serve as a longterm staple in United’s attack, with his prime years way ahead of him.

Mario Götze

Götze’s goal in the 2014 World Cup final cemented him in world football glory.

Yet an unproductive campaign with Bayern Munich this season has led many to questions as to whether he will return to the German side for another season.

When healthy, Götze is one of the world’s top attackers. His clinical finishing would surely aide a United attack that struggled to score in 2015-16.

Toni Kroos

Could United Kroos into the Champions League?

Kroos left Bayern Munich last year, but he is still among the top playmakers in the world. A clinical passer, Kroos orchestrates Germany’s well-oiled attack and is brilliant at set pieces.

United’s midfielders are ageing and slowing down. Implementing a marksman like Kroos would prove beneficial for Jose Mourinho.

Bartosz Kapustka

The 19-year-old Kapustka is more of a long-term project but another budding star that could help United for years to come.

The Polish midfielder is a fantastic passer in the attacking third.

Big money invested across the last 12 monthsLittle return enjoyed so farUrged to snap up more proven talentWHAT HAPPENED?

The Premier League giants have invested heavily since Todd Boehly completed his takeover of the club in summer 2022. Eye-watering amounts of money have been splashed out on the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez, Malo Gusto, Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer.

AdvertisementWHAT THEY SAID

Begovic, who spent two seasons at Stamford Bridge between 2015 and 2017, has told podcast of business in west London: "If you’re spending £115m on Caicedo, surely you spend £120m on Declan Rice? I don’t know Declan personally, I’m not saying he doesn’t want to play for Arsenal, but hand on heart I think he’d have wanted to go to Chelsea. You look at some of these players and think, ‘How is Declan Rice going somewhere else?’ Players like this, they would go to Chelsea in the past; players in their prime, and Declan Rice is in his prime.

"I watch football like a mad man and I’m not familiar with half these players! For me it’s odd, the whole thing is very odd. I don’t see the construction of the team, this whole rebuilding transition phase is a bit of an excuse to me. I’m not saying I don’t like Enzo Fernandez, but if we’re going to spend £230m on him and Caicedo then I’d prefer Declan Rice over any of those players if I can get him. Get the best players in through the door please."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ex-Bosnia international Begovic, who took in 33 appearances for the Blues and is now on the books at Queens Park Rangers, added: "Honestly, I mean in the last 12 months… what has happened at Chelsea football club? It just beggars belief. I mean the squad of players at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal, the amount of money spent is 12th in the league – it’s mid-table! It is literally mid-table. If they were any higher you would be working miracles. You have a bit of [bad] luck with Christopher Nkunku, I get it, he’s a top player. Cole Palmer has only just come in.

"But what is going on with the recruitment of these players? Why is Chelsea football club rebuilding? Why is Chelsea football club in a transition? This is one of the best. I mean I’ve been there. I’m proud to have been there. It’s one of the best locations to play football in the world. I remember being with players in the dressing room, world class, world class, world class. Buying from Barcelona, buying from Real Madrid, buying from Bayern Munich. It’s like, we’re buying from Brighton, potential players. And I get you need a part of that, but where is the top world class players?"
