According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United are not interested in making a swoop for Fernando Llorente this summer.

What’s the word?

Reports had suggested the Spaniard was on the verge of a free transfer to United following his release from Tottenham at the end of last season.

However, The Daily Mail claim that this is not the case and the Red Devils “do not plan” on making an offer for the veteran forward any time soon – this is a mistake.

United’s transfer stance on Llorente is likely to mean Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to make do with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Alexis Sanchez as his sole options up front, and the latter could be set for a departure.

Plan B

Llorente may not have had regular first-team starts at Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino, but there can be no doubting that he was part of some magical moments in his time in north London.

The Spaniard scored that all-important goal at the Etihad against Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals, and followed it up with a supreme second-leg performance against Ajax in the last four.

Whilst Solskjaer is intent on trying to press from the front and inject some pace into the United attack, the Red Devils could really do with someone of Llorente’s profile. After all, just look at the success Marouane Fellaini had at Old Trafford whenever the side wanted to go more direct.

It may not be easy on the eye, but it’s most definitely effective. In the Premier League last season, the former Athletic Bilbao striker registered an average of 2.7 aerial duels won per game.

Instead, United’s reported stance on the 6 foot 5 ace means there is going to be a huge reliance on an inexperienced set of forwards who all play the same way to fire the side to glory this season.

Plan A may well work for most of the campaign, but not having a Plan B in their ranks like the former Spurs star could be a major oversight on Solskjaer’s part.

وقال بوتشيتينو في مؤتمر صحفي عقب المباراة: “دي ماريا لديه مشكلة صغيرة مع عضلات الفخذ، وسنرى غدًا”.

وأضاف: “تلقى فيراتي ضربة، وسيكون من الضروري تقييم كيفية تعافيه منها، كما تعرض إيكاردي لضربة في الاشتباك مع حارس المرمى، علينا أن نرى (بعد خضوعهم لفحص طبي)”.

وبسؤاله عن شعور تجاه دوري الأبطال، أجاب الأرجنتيني: “كل المباريات مختلفة والمسابقات أيضًا، دوري أبطال أوروبا هو حلم كل اللاعبين، ما زلنا نريد أن ننمو، وأن نؤسس هويتنا”.

وبشأن الفوز على مارسيليا في الكلاسيكو الفرنسي، أردف بوتشيتينو: “يجب الفوز بهذه المباريات، ليست هناك حاجة لشرح ما هو هذا الكلاسيكو”.

Tottenham Hotspur enquired about signing Burnley winger Dwight McNeil before shifting their focus to Leeds United’s Jack Clarke, per The Sun.

McNeil made his first-team breakthrough last season, playing 26 times in all competitions.

The 19-year-old scored three goals in the Premier League and registered five assists and has been capped at Under-20 level by England.

The report claims that Spurs asked about the possibility of securing his signature but moved onto to Clarke instead, with the Whites youngster reportedly poised to complete his £10m move in the coming days.

McNeil has a £30m asking price at Turf Moor and Juventus are also said to be taking an interest in his progress.

A prohibitive fee

Paying £30m for a player who has had one good season in the top-flight just isn’t Spurs’ style.

McNeil is clearly a player of promise, notching up three goals and five assists in the Premier League.

But the deal to sign Clarke from Leeds is about £20m cheaper for a player with a similar level of experience – he’s featured 25 times for the first-team, albeit many of those appearances coming in the Championship, and has found two goals and two assists.

Some may claim that this is an example of Spurs merely seeking out the cheapest possible acquisition. But this is actually the better outcome for a club who are looking to inject youth into their squad this summer.

It remains to be seen if Clarke will make an impact next term, of course, but one feels Spurs have made the correct call. Has McNeil really done enough in just 26 games to suggest he’s worth three times as much as Clarke?

صحيفة “فاناتيك” التركية، قالت في تقرير لها قبل قليل: “جالطة سراي توصل إلى اتفاق مع الزمالك، بشأن ضم مصطفى محمد، الذي يُصر فاتح تيرم (مدرب سراي)، على ضمه”.

وأضافت: “مُهاجم الزمالك أبلغ إدارة النادي أنه عازم على الرحيل، حيث يريد صاحب الـ23 عامًا خوض تجرية جديدة”.

وأتمت: “مفاوضات جالطة سراي وصلت إلى مرحلة مُتقدمة مع مصطفى محمد والزمالك، حتى ينضم لثاني ترتيب الدوري التركي على سبيل الإعارة حتى نهاية الموسم”.

وقال نادر شوقي خلال استضافته ببرنامج “جمهور التالتة”، المُذاع عبر قناة أون تايم سبورت 2: “كنت جالسا مع وكيل أعمال الثلاثي فرجاني ساسي وأشرف بن شرقي ومحمد أوناجم، كريم البلق، هو صديقي ولدينا عمل مشترك، لاعبو الزمالك كانوا سيتقابلون معه، تقابلنا بالصدفة ولكن لم أجلس معهم، شرف لي أن يحدث ذلك،  ولا يوجد كباري”.

وأضاف: “اللاعب الأجبني لا يحتاج إلى كوبري، هناك 50 ألف حل آخر عدا الكباري، هناك أمور قانونية ممكن أن نعمل عليها أو ثغرات، اللاعب المصري يحتاج إلى كوبري أما الأجنبي لا”.

وعن أفضل رئيس للأهلي تعامل معه؟ قال: “لم أتعامل مع حسن حمدي، ولكن محمود الخطيب هو أفضل من تعاملت معه، وكل الاحترام لمحمود طاهر”.

وتابع: “الخطيب ساحر، صعب أن تتحدث أو تتفاوض معه حول الأموال، حدث موقف لحسام غالي وقت عودته من النصر السعودي، دخل لكي يتفاوض مع الخطيب ووقع على بياض وأنا لم أنطق بكلمة”.

وبسؤاله عن لاعب أهلاوي كان يتمنى وكالته للاحتراف في أوروبا محمد أبو تريكة أم وائل جمعة أم محمد بركات؟ أجاب:” الثلاثي”.

واستكمل: “كنت أتمنى الحصول على وكالة حازم إمام الكبير وشيكابالا ومصطفى محمد، من لاعبي الزمالك، لاحترافهم في أوروبا”.

وأوضح: “الأقرب للمشاركة في مهرجان اعتزال عماد متعب في البداية كان برشلونة إنما حاليًا لا أعلم، بسبب كورونا”.

وأردف: “النادي الاهلي الأقرب للفوز بالدوري هذا الموسم”.

وعن أفضل لاعب في مصر حاليًا ما بين رمضان صبحي وإمام عاشور ومحمد مجدي أفشة؟، قال: “حاليا أفشة”.

واختتم: “أكرم توفيق بالنسبة لي الصاروخ الصاعد، أرشحه أن يكون أفضل لاعب في مصر هذا الموسم”.

According to The Times, Chinese club Shandong Luneng Taishan have offered £15m for Crystal Palace forward Christian Benteke, who has struggled for form in front of goal in the past two seasons, netting just four league goals since the start of the 2017/18 campaign.

The Belgian behemoth fell behind Michy Batshuayi in the pecking order once his compatriot signed for the Eagles on loan in January and it seems now that he could be on his way out.

What’s the word?

Well, The Times report that the 28-year-old could join his international teammate, Marouane Fellaini, in the Far East this summer after three mixed seasons at Selhurst Park.

The former Aston Villa and Liverpool striker was signed for £27m in 2016 and went on to score 17 goals in his first campaign in red and blue under Alan Pardew and then Sam Allardyce, although it’s all been downhill since.

Injuries have curtailed the hitman’s opportunities in the starting XI but his performances when fit haven’t helped either – Palace fans in the Holmesdale end will be familiar with the 6 ft 3 flop taking aim at goal, mainly because the ball usually hits them rather than the back of the net.

Take it and run, Palace

The Selhurst Park outfit could face a big reshuffle in the coming months, with the futures of star men Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka uncertain and a number of players surely deemed surplus to requirements. While the transfer sagas concerning the aforementioned duo will likely dominate the remainder of the window, Palace should have no doubts about accepting this bid for Benteke.

The striker takes up an extraordinary amount of the Eagles’ wage budget, raking in £130,000-a-week – a figure Palace surely can’t justify any longer – and, with just a year left on the 34-cap international’s current deal, they could face losing him on a free next summer if they don’t sell him soon.

Steve Parish and co likely won’t get a better offer than this between now and January so they should be biting the Chinese suitor’s hand off and packing Benteke’s bags.

It has been a tough season for Queens Park Rangers, but they finished their 2018-19 Championship campaign with an impressive 2-1 victory at Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday afternoon.

The winner came very, very late. Matt Smith scored it, with the towering striker finding the back of the net in the third minute of additional time at the end of the 90.

The 29-year-old finished the 2018-19 campaign with six Championship goals, but it is worth considering that the clash with Wednesday proved to be just the third time that he had completed the full 90 minutes of a league fixture this term.

Smith – out of contract next summer – would have certainly wanted more of a chance to prove his worth from the start.

And that is also the view of a number of the QPR fans, who have reacted to Smith’s winner against Wednesday on Sunday afternoon.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Smith heading into the new campaign, but the R’s fans have made their feelings pretty clear on Twitter:

According to reports in The Sun on Sunday (May 19, Page 63), Norwich City want to make Jordan Rhodes’ stay at Carrow Road a permanent one.

The Scottish striker spent 2018/19 on loan at the East Anglian club, and he has seemingly impressed Daniel Farke enough for the Canaries to look at bringing him back.

Rhodes’ season

Norwich’s continued interest in the Scotland international is surprising. Rhodes has long been praised for his goalscoring ability, but that appeared to desert him this term as he found the back of the net just six times in the league.

He also only provided one assist for teammates, so it’s hard to see what has impressed Farke so much that he wants the 29-year-old in his squad next season.

The former Blackburn striker has been one of the most prolific scorers in the Championship over the past few years, but he has never been given a real chance at the Premier League, and perhaps Norwich believe he still has something to prove in the top flight.

Wednesday mustn’t hesitate

Rhodes had an awful first couple of seasons at Hillsborough after becoming the club’s record signing. He netted just eight league goals over two campaigns whilst collecting a hefty wage.

The forward reportedly earns £38,500-a-week at the Owls, and if the opportunity comes to shift him off of their wage bill, then they must take it.

The decline has seemingly already begun for the former Huddersfield man, and aged 29 it’s hard to see him ever rediscovering the form that saw the Yorkshire club pay £10 million for him a few years ago.

Steve Bruce may be tempted to attempt to coach Rhodes back into form, as the striker hasn’t yet played under the tutelage of the Owls’ new manager, but he must resist this temptation and allow him to go to Norwich if an offer comes in.

Wednesday could easily use his saved wages to bring in a different striking option who can help fire them into the top six next season.

BBC pundit Garth Crooks has, as always, written his ‘Team of the Week’ column, and he has thrown up some interesting points yet again.

Crooks discussed all things from the title race down to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s impact at Southampton, but one statement on Jordan Henderson’s current situation at Liverpool hit home harder than any other points.

The Reds beat Chelsea 2-0, returning to the top of the table in doing so, with Henderson putting in a ‘Man of the Match’ performance to help his side earn all three points.

What did Crooks say?

Henderson has only recently been reinstated into the starting line-up on a more regular basis after a chat with Klopp over his position in the team, and he has put his money where his mouth is with some inspirational displays.

After his showing against the Blues, in which he set up Sadio Mane’s opener, Crooks wrote: “If Liverpool do happen to win the title, the return to form of Jordan Henderson will have had a lot to do with it.

“How much credit Jurgen Klopp will take for that remains to be seen. It was Klopp who dropped Henderson – harshly in my view – but the reaction of the Liverpool captain has been quite remarkable.”

How much credit does Klopp deserve?

None. It was Henderson who walked into the German’s office, told Klopp that he felt he performs better as a No.8 – pointing to his recent displays with England as proof – and forced his boss’ hand.

Now Henderson has put in three excellent performances in the role against Southampton, Porto and Chelsea, meaning there is no way that Klopp can have even a shred of the acclaim for the England international’s upturn in form.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager even apologised for playing Henderson as a No.6 for the past couple of years, but revealed that he ‘had to’ as no other player could.

Fabinho has been at the club for nearly a year however, so if Klopp was waiting for a No.6 to arrive before restoring Henderson to his favoured role why has he delayed such a switch until the final month of the campaign?

Henderson deserves 100% of the credit for speaking up, and even more credit for delivering the performances to match his belief in his own ability.
