Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa ignoring key formation is puzzling

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Marcelo Bielsa attracted widespread criticism from Leeds fans at the weekend.

Considering the way he’s taken Leeds to a new level in the Championship it was perhaps somewhat of an overreaction.

But there is an argument to be had in terms of his team selection.

At the moment, it’s proving questionable and the way he’s set up his team has led to late exploitation and also a lack of goals.

In matches against Swansea and Derby, they had over 60% of the possession but only scored once and took just a solitary point from those clashes.

So what can Leeds do?

On the chalkboard

At the moment Bielsa’s tactical ignorance is proving to be a real issue for Leeds. He keeps on relying on Jack Harrison, someone who hasn’t contributed to a goal since the opening weekend, while Patrick Bamford has now gone goalless in three games.

The calls, certainly from supporters, is for Eddie Nketiah and Helder Costa to start but possibly a system change is needed.

After all, arguably Leeds’ best performance in the league this season came when operating with three at the back.

Against Stoke last month the Whites recorded a 3-0 victory as they amassed 64.5% of the possession away from home.

It was as complete a performance as you can get on the road as Bielsa’s much-teased two man attack was in operation.

On the day, Harrison and Bamford were the men tasked with leading the line as a pairing but with Nketiah now so close to gaining a chance, perhaps this is how the Argentine can work him into his system.

It’s particularly confusing that the 64-year-old has neglected this formation since the win over Stoke.

Leeds are struggling to get over the line but even if a 4-1-4-1 is his preferred way to go, he shouldn’t be against change.

The Whites’ brightest spell against Brentford came when they switched to a three-man defence as Nketiah popped up with a late winner.

It allowed greater protection for their attacking full-backs in Stuart Dallas and Gjanni Alioski as well, who both scored against Stoke.

In that 3-4-1-2 system they deployed at the Potteries, Leeds looked confident in defence but also going forward.

That was certainly not the case versus the Rams, especially late on when they conceded three of Derby’s five efforts on goal in the final 15 minutes.

Ignorance is sometimes bliss but perhaps Bielsa ought to look at something that has already treated Leeds so well in 2019/20, rather than a system that’s causing difficulties.

Manchester United icons Evra and Berbatov reply to Ferdinand’s Instagram post

Rio Ferdinand is usually pretty active on his

/” data-lasso->social media accounts.

The Manchester United icon loves sharing both his professional and private ventures, especially on his Instagram profile, and it often leads to various hilarious situations and funny moments.

One such moment happened with his latest Instagram video where he posted some footage in which he can be seen doing keepy-uppys by the pool.

And of course, it didn’t take long for his friends and ex-teammates to reply.

The first one to the scene was, of course, none other than Patrice Evra, who was quick to hilariously tease the ex-Red Devil.

Evra noted that Ferdinand cut the video just at the moment they were going to drop the ball and lose the point and made sure to highlight that with his comment.

And this is not really a surprise since the two often rinse each other on social media but it’s all just friendly banter.

Dimitar Berbatov was also there and he complimented Ferdinand but also reminded him who taught him that skill in the first place.

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof deserves a run in the team after Chelsea display

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

After a resounding 4-0 win over Chelsea in the opening Premier League game of the season, much of the talk understandably has revolved around Manchester United’s new signings and forwards. But one man who quietly went about his job with consummate ease and has earned little of the limelight, is Victor Lindelof.

The Sweden international was just as imperious as summer signing Harry Maguire in the centre of United’s defence, and radiated a sense of calm and poise. The 25-year-old looked defensively strong against Chelsea’s mobile front-line, and was assured on the ball whenever the Blues looked to press.

The Red Devils conceded 54 goals in the Premier League last season, but on Sunday, looked like anything but their usual creaky selves. Maguire’s display was certainly impressive, and it helped bring the best out of Lindelof too.

Indeed, speaking on Sky Sports, former United boss Jose Mourinho said: “You can be very dangerous in attack but if you feel that a mistake is around the corner it takes your confidence away and you don’t play as well.

“When you feel there is something that allows you to play you are much more confident. As I always said Lindelof can be a very good player. With Maguire it can be a very good partnership.”

Despite splashing out a world-record £80m for Maguire, United still boast an abundance of centre-back options. Since arriving from Benfica, Lindelof hasn’t exactly set the world alight at Old Trafford and it has been no surprise to see him struggle to nail down a spot in the first-team. But his display against Chelsea showed he could be the perfect compliment to United’s new signing. He was quick, strong in the tackle and calm on the ball. Everything that United arguably lacked last season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side need stability at the back, and giving Lindelof an extended run in the team to see if he can partner Maguire in the long-term seems like a no-brainer. At 6 foot 2, the Swede has all the attributes to create a formidable partnership with United’s £80m man.

Idrissa Gana Gueye posts emotional goodbye to Everton fans on Instagram

We dare say that if there was one man the Everton faithful didn’t want to wave goodbye to this season it was Gueye.

According to BBC Sport statistics, no other player in the Premier League attempted more tackles than him last season (he won 89 of his 142 challenges).

That means he won more tackles per game (2.7) than any other player in the top flight – bear in mind N’Golo Kante, the man some might consider the best defensive midfielder in the world, is amongst those lower ranked than he.

And Guye’s claim that Merseyside will always be blue is one that is bound to pull on the heart strings of the Toffees faithful.

Newcastle: Jacob Murphy heads out on loan

Newcastle United have confirmed that Jacob Murphy has secured a season-long loan to Sheffield Wednesday.

[ad_pod ]

The 24-year-old completed his move on transfer deadline day, having spent the second half of last season on loan at West Bromwich Albion.

Murphy spent the first half of last season at St. James’ Park, but only managed three league starts and six substitute appearances, making one assist, as per WhoScored.

During the second half of the campaign, he made nine Championship starts and six substitute appearances in a West Brom shirt, scoring twice and assisting once.

He also made 0.6 key passes, 1.1 dribbles and 0.3 crosses per game for the Baggies – while his form was okay, it wasn’t the sort of showing that would help him force his way back into the Newcastle side.

His chances were made even slimmer when Allan Saint-Maximin, who will likely play on the wing, signed for the Magpies this summer.

While it would have been better for Newcastle to sell Murphy on a permanent basis, with his future at the club looking bleak, getting him out on loan is the next best option.

Murphy has failed to make any real impact at St. James’ Park, so loaning him out to a club where he should be able to get more game time is good for him, as it should mean the 24-year-old can start showing what he can do again.

Newcastle fans, is this a good move for Murphy? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!

Crystal Palace: Aidy Boothroyd’s treatment of Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been harsh

England U21s finished their miserable UEFA European Under-21 Championship campaign with a 3-3 draw against Croatia, leaving Aidy Boothroyd with even more questions to answer.

Boothroyd has come under heavy fire throughout the tournament for his team selections, with the former Watford manager leaving Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka out of his last two despite the 21-year-old’s stunning form in the Premier League last season.

Yes, of course, Wan-Bissaka did not have the greatest of games against France, with Boothroyd believing all the speculation surrounding his future has been on his mind.

“All he knows is Crystal Palace’s academy and Crystal Palace [and] I think it would be daft not to say in some way that he must think about it,” the England U21 boss was quoted as saying by Sky Sports after that 2-1 defeat to Sylvain Ripoll’s side.

Even so, you cannot help but feel that Boothroyd’s treatment of Wan-Bissaka since then has still been pretty harsh.

Following that costly own goal, it was undoubtedly a disappointing night for the right-back. However, in that game against the French, he was still able to make six tackles, more than any other player in that fixture (as per WhoScored).

Going on to concede another seven goals in their next two fixtures against Romania and Croatia, England could have done with that sort of defensive ability in the backline.

And that ability to win the ball back was not a one off. Let us not forget that Wan-Bissaka averaged 3.7 tackles per game in the Premier League last season. To put that into perspective, only Wilfred Ndidi (3.8) and Idrissa Gueye (4.3) averaged more (also per WhoScored).

Sorry, Boothroyd, but you have got this one wrong.

Crystal Palace fans, do you think Boothroyd’s treatment of Wan-Bissaka has been unfair? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

Sheyi Ojo congratulated on Instagram after joining Rangers

[ad_pod ]

The highly talented Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo has officially completed his loan move to Rangers.

The 22-year-old has spent some time in France playing for Reims but after a decent season over in Ligue 1, the youngster has decided to return to English football under the watchful eye of Steven Gerrard.

As his move was confirmed, Ojotook to social media and Instagram to share his first snaps donning the famous blue jersey. Many Championship and Premier League stars were quick to congratulate him on this big step in his career.

His replies were swarmed by numerous players showing their support and wishing the young starlet all the best for his campaign in the Scottish Premiership. The likes of Tammy Abraham and Kyle-Walker Peters were among the first to pop up.

Soon, the array of other friends, rivals and colleagues followed suit.

Ojo has agreed to a one-year loan with Rangers and then it’s back to Anfield after that but it’s still pretty unknown if Jurgen Klopp has him in his plans for the future or not.

He was, though, extremely prolific while he was playing for Liverpool’s U-23 squad, scoring 12 goals and assisting three in 26 appearances, and has even featured 13 times for the senior team, bagging one and assisting four in the process.

Leeds’ transfer policy is brilliant as it incorporates both short and long-term aspiratuons

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United have been linked with a vast number of signings already this summer.

But in terms of the players they are targeting, they are striking a great balance between aiming for short-term and long-term success.

Leeds are a team that need to perform well next season, but fortunately, they also aren’t neglecting the long-term future of the club.

Andrea Radrizzani has operated largely on a sell before you buy policy, and it has been speculated that that model may be followed again this summer.

But it’s more than just their financial future, Leeds aren’t only targeting players who will get them promoted next season, they are looking at potential stars who could carry the team forward down the line.

The Yorkshire club have been linked with players who have the potential to make a significant impact in their push for the top two this season. The likes of Harry Wilson and Helder Costa have proven themselves to be top players at Championship level with their goal contribution records, but the Whites have also been looking at young prospects such as Cody Drameh and Rafa Mujica.

As long as the Whites’ youth team is being headed up by Carlos Corberan these players have a great chance of progressing to become members of the first team. Last season we saw both Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton become critical components in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad as they made plenty of appearances in important games.

If the sell before you buy policy is to continue at Elland Road, then this may be the best way to go about it. Clarke is now being touted as a £20m player, and these youngsters that the Whites are looking at bringing in could also be sold for millions of pounds once they mature.

If Leeds can purchase and develop youngster at this rate it will allow for the bigger-name signings like Patrick Bamford and Kiko Casilla to come in, all while keeping their net spend as low as possible.

Yes please: Aston Villa fans call for club to sign Liverpool’s Ryan Kent

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Aston Villa want to sign Liverpool attacker Ryan Kent in this summer’s transfer window.

And a number of Villa fans are keen for their club to swoop for the 22-year-old.

Kent has spent the 2018-19 campaign on loan at Rangers – scoring six times and contributing nine assists in 43 appearances in all competitions.

The attacker has actually only represented Liverpool’s first team on one occasion.

Indeed, the bulk of his first-team action has come during loan spells with Coventry City, Barnsley, Freiburg, Bristol City and Rangers.

According to The Sun, Villa are determined to purchase Kent in a £10m deal.

Rangers fans are desperate for their club to sign the former England Under-20 international on a permanent deal this summer, which shows just how dazzling he was for the Gers this term.

However, Villa appear to be in the driving seat and the club’s fans are keen for a swoop to take place ahead of the new campaign.
