Bandeira, Wallim e Cacau representam as chapas Azul, Verde e Branca, respectivamente.

Sunderland: Wolves make contact with academy starlet Daniel Neil

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made contact with Sunderland over academy starlet Daniel Neil, according to Football Insider.

Interest in the youngster became public just under two weeks ago as Wolves followed up a report linking Leeds United with a move.

Sunderland have endured a difficult spell of late both in the first team and at academy level, seeing a whole host of young players leave the Stadium of Light.

With the 2019/20 season now done and dusted, another young talent could be set to leave the Academy of Light, with a recent report claiming that Wolves have now made contact with Sunderland in an attempt to sign the 18-year-old midfielder.

Football Insider also reported that a recruitment source close to them has said that Wolves are desperate to beat off competition from Leeds and Newcastle, who have also been linked to Neil.

Neil has been a regular for the Black Cats’ under-23 side with 13 appearances to his name last season in Premier League 2.

Having made just one senior appearance, the youngster is reportedly available for a six-figure transfer fee which would hand the Wearsiders compensation for his training and development costs, as per Football Insider.

Another player looks set to leave Sunderland’s academy setup, and the Black Cats really need to get to grips with the club’s youth sides and entice players to remain on Wearside, albeit easier said than done when Premier League clubs are showing interest.

Hopefully the first team can make progress on the pitch, ideally in the form of promotion to the Championship next year, so that Sunderland’s academy stars may be more inclined to stay put instead of seeing a better future elsewhere.

Sunderland: Ipswich Town join in race to sign Danny Graham

Sunderland have been joined by League One rivals Ipswich Town in the race to make a summer move for Danny Graham.

As Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson looks to bounce back following a poor league finish in the League One table and a failure to gain promotion to the Championship, numerous transfer rumours are starting to emerge.

One area in particular that Parkinson could look to improve is in attack having seen the likes of Charlie Wyke and Will Grigg struggle to find the back of the net on a consistent basis last season.

Linked with a potential move for Sydney FC striker Adam Le Fondre, the Wearsiders are also looking towards former Watford, Swansea, and Blackburn man Graham.

Graham, valued at £428,000 by Transfermarkt, is available on a free transfer having recently left Blackburn, ending a four-and-a-half year stay at Ewood Park.

Joining Sunderland with interest in the 34-year-old striker are Ipswich, who like Sunderland, will be keen to improve on missing out on the chance to gain promotion last term.

East Anglian Daily Times report the news, claiming Paul Lambert is keen on the striker who has amassed 169 goals during his career in English football.

Graham would be a good addition for either Sunderland or Ipswich but he may have a better offer on the table given his experience.

Deciding between Ipswich and Sunderland does not hand the striker too many differences, but what could tempt him to join either, is the task of gaining promotion.

West Ham: Fans react to news around Sean Dyche

A lot of West Ham fans are discussing the latest news surrounding Sean Dyche and his links to the club.

The news suggests that co-owner Karren Brady knows Dyche quite well and that he has expressed interest in managing the Irons. This news was broken by ExWHUemployee speaking on his West Ham Way podcast, via West Ham News, as he said: “Before we got Moyes he [Dyche] was heavily linked by myself and a number of people. He’s a good friend of Karren Brady for some random reason.

“I don’t know why, but he is. And he has also expressed an interest in managing us. I believe if we wanted to get Sean Dyche next year we could. (But) I don’t think if we stay up they’ll get rid of Moyes, I think Moyes will be the manager next year and I think if we did go down Dyche would obviously not leave Burnley for us.

“But if Moyes was to suddenly go or he was to get the sack then I think Dyche would be interested and I think we would approach him.”

In the Premier League, Dyche has a pretty respectable record with Burnley, as he has managed 186 games and he has been in charge of 57 wins, 45 draws and 87 losses, this gives him a win percentage of around 30.6%, per Transfermarkt.

Meanwhile, Moyes at West Ham this season has won four, drawn three and lost 10 of his fixtures, which gives him a 23% win record at the club, per Transfermarkt.

With Burnley notoriously not spending a lot and Dyche having a better win percentage than Moyes, it is understandable that some believe the Clarets boss is a better manager, and many fans of the East London side seem to agree, with one labelling him a ‘proper manager’.

Tottenham: Spurs fans reminisce about Luka Modric’s signing

Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to reminisce about their signing of Luka Modric back in 2008.

The Croatia international joined the Lilywhites from Dinamo Zagreb for a then club-record fee of £16.5m, and he went on to become one of the most influential Spurs midfielders of the Premier League era.

The diminutive play-maker featured 160 times in his stay with the club, scoring 17 times and providing a further 27 assists, and was of course part of the Spurs team that enjoyed an impressive Champions League run in the 2010/2011 campaign.

Modric would then eventually leave north London to join Spanish giants Real Madrid, where he has established himself as one of the world’s best, winning the Ballon d’Or and helping Los Blancos lift multiple Champions League titles.

With confirmation of his arrival at Spurs coming on April 26, Spurs fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts about their former star.

Simon Jordan would be "very surprised" if the PL blocked Newcastle takeover

Newcastle United’s takeover is going to go through, according to former Palace chairman Simon Jordan.

The owner-turned-pundit was appearing on Tuesday’s edition of ‘White and Sawyer‘ on talkSPORT where he was asked about the situation and emerging reports surrounding pirate streaming service beoutQ.

Jordan suggests it would be a very big surprise to see the Premier League block the deal and that they are merely trying to gain some leverage over the illegal broadcast of their matches in Saudi Arabia.

It comes after the Guardian’s revelation into a World Trade Organisation report which had found the Saudi government to be involved with beoutQ, but that doesn’t necessarily mean those involved in the Magpies’ takeover are involved too.

In response to the situation, Jordan offered an encouraging verdict on the prospects of it being approved, he said:

“I just feel that the Premier League will use it as leverage to try and get some reigning in of that, but I will be very, very, very, very surprised – you [Jim White] talk to Amanda Staveley, you get the gist of it as well – I’d be very surprised if they block this and are able to block it because there are other people that own football clubs that one could question the veracity or the advocacy of their ownership and I think this is going to be a very difficult situation.

“The Premier League, if it blocks this move, is pretty much saying – to some extent – that club’s only to their approval, owners only to their approval, irrespective of the conditionality of that and then you move the bar and move the bar down, and you’ll have this argument raging in Newcastle more than anywhere else that this only retains the status quo for those that it suits.

“I’d be very surprised if it’s blocked, Jim. Very surprised.”

Jordan emphasises his thoughts that it would be a massive surprise to see the PL reject United’s takeover by a Saudi-backed consortium.

He also raises an interesting point that would call into question their decisions to approve other deals in the past, and whilst it remains to be seen who he’s talking about, it’s fair to suggest that Manchester City may come into the equation given they are owned by the UAE.

Spurs fans react to new Pochettino claim

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left contemplating the possibility of Mauricio Pochettino rocking up at Arsenal for the last few weeks.

Fresh from his sacking as Spurs boss, the Gunners sacked Unai Emery and reports have suggested that he is seen as a viable option to take over.

However, a new Daily Telegraph report claims that any club wishing to appoint Pochettino will have to deal directly with Daniel Levy and pay compensation to Spurs.

Essentially, he has been placed on gardening leave, meaning that the club would be due a fee if he moved to another club before the summer, be it in England or in Europe.

And supporters have been reacting to the news in their droves.

A number of fans have taken it upon themselves to praise Levy for the way he has conducted the business.

Other fans have taken the opportunity to poke fun at the fact that Arsenal are now unlikely to appoint Pochettino, who guided the club to the Champions League final and also mounted two Premier League title challenges.

One has to say that, if this is true, it is a truly superb piece of business from the Spurs chairman, who has essentially ensured that Pochettino won’t be lining up against his side in 2019/20.

Meanwhile, Spurs have a rival in the chase to sign a former Premier League flop.

Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish right to be omitted from the England squad

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Gareth Southgate announced a 27-man squad for his side’s upcoming games against Montenegro and Kosovo, and although reports have suggested that Jack Grealish’s fitness have played a part in the Aston Villa midfielder’s exclusion from selection, even if the 24-year-old had been fit, the England boss would have been right to omit him from his squad.

Much has been made of Grealish’s start to the 2019/20 campaign after having captained his boyhood club to promotion via the Championship play-offs and granted, the skilful playmaker has impressed at times, scoring two goals and registering three assists.

But when you consider that these numbers are a replica of Anwar El Ghazi’s attacking output so far this season, has Grealish really been impressing for Dean Smith’s side?

The midfielder’s ability to weave past players and contribute in the final third is well documented, with Villa having scored more goals this season than any other side in the bottom nine.

But when assessing where Grealish would fit within the complexion of the Three Lions’ squad, there is arguably no room for a player whose abilities are not directly aligned to producing attacking output.

The likes of Mason Mount and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be looking to secure themselves a starting berth in England’s midfield options, and when compared to the recently selected duo, it is difficult to state that Grealish offers more within the attacking spots.

Mount has already bagged four goals in 2019/20 while amassing a considerable 2.6 shots per game, via WhoScored. Oxlade-Chamberlain, on the other hand, has also scored four times. That’s from just six starts in all competitions.

Those at Villa may feel that any suggestion Grealish is ill-qualified for international duty is an unreasonable suggestion, given his influential role in his side’s ascendancy over the last two seasons, but the playmaker is not contributing with enough vigour and regularity to be considered a definite selection for England.

Whether Villa’s captain will make the cut for Euro 2020 remains to be seen, but on the basis of current form in the 2019/20 campaign, regardless of fitness, Southgate has made the right call in not selecting Grealish for November’s international break.

To be considered, he needs to do more.

Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold is close to being world-class, says Gary Neville

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Gary Neville stated that Trent Alexander-Arnold is on the verge of being a world-class right-back, but made it clear that he needs to work on one area of his game if that is to happen.

What did he say?

The Liverpool right-back is praised frequently, primarily for his ability on the ball, with Jamie Carragher previously labelling him as the Reds’ version of Kevin De Bruyne – suggesting that a future in midfield could perhaps await.

Alexander-Arnold was key to a lot of what Liverpool did well against Spurs, too, leading to plaudits from Neville about his attacking play.

However, the former Manchester United player is concerned about the defensive side of his game. He often finds himself out of position – it was an area exploited in the match against Sheffield United – and Neville believes that until he addresses the weakness, he can’t be considered world-class.

Speaking post-match on Sky Sports’ coverage of Liverpool vs Tottenham, he said: “Liverpool’s full-backs are quite simply sensational.

“Robertson is a better full-back than Trent Alexander-Arnold in my opinion.

After reminiscing over his full Premier League debut away at Man United and describing him as one of the best attacking full-backs he’s ever seen, Neville delivered a frank verdict on how he needs to improve from a defensive standpoint.

“He’s got to become as serious about his defending as he is about his attacking player and you’ve got a world class full back there,” Neville said.

“I took the Man of the Match off him because his defensive play could have cost his team.”

Due to Liverpool’s dominance of the ball – with an average of 58% possession this term – his positioning often goes punished, but it could be a reason why he is often left out of the England starting line-up; on his last start against Kosovo his poor defending cost his team goals.

Harsh from Neville

The pundit is quick to criticise Alexander-Arnold – who is valued at £72m by Transfermarkt – but the 21-year-old barely put a foot wrong in a defensive aspect against Spurs, and arguably his only poor moment came in failing to close down Heung-min Son in the build-up to the visitors’ goal.

Jamie Carragher was quick to leap to his defence, describing him as Liverpool’s most creative outlet, and since his 19 assists from the beginning of 2018/19 – with three this term – are not bettered by a teammate, it is clear how crucial he is to his side.

He was a threat all afternoon against Tottenham, making seven key passes, and he almost rifled the ball home from distance, too.

It is easy for Neville to point to defensive weaknesses but it is something he has improved on in the last few weeks, and he made two tackles and one interception on Sunday.

Prior to that, he made one tackle and five interceptions against Leicester but that did not prevent him from tallying five key passes, stats that underline the great balance he has in his game.

The fact he is performing this well in a side that has won the European Cup and lost just one league match in 48 suggests that he is in fact world-class.

Wolves boss Nuno Santo would atone for his errors by signing Diego Llorente

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to David Ornstein at The Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers could go back in for Diego Llorente in the January transfer window.

It would certainly soften the blow to losing Willy Boly, but also, it gives manager Nuno Santo an opportunity to atone for a previous mistake.

What’s the word?

Ornstein suggests that the 26-year-old very nearly signed for the club during the summer, having been given a personal presentation of the local area and the club.

Wolves eventually ended their pursuit and opted for a temporary loan deal with fellow Spaniard Jesus Vallejo instead.

The Euro U21 winning captain has struggled to adapt to life in the west Midlands and has made just one start in the Premier League – fans have certainly made their thoughts clear on his abilities, and it is far from positive.

Llorente has played nine La Liga matches this term, starting at centre-back in each despite possessing versatile characteristics.

Correcting his ways

Nuno has recently been faced with the devastating loss of mainstay defender Boly after the 28-year-old broke his fibula during training last month, but in his absence, he has made a few surprising decisions.

The Portuguese boss first experimented with Matt Doherty in the centre for one half against Newcastle United, and last time out saw midfielder Leander Dendoncker feature the entire match in the role.

That’s even despite having Vallejo and Max Kilman available, who are both natural centre-backs.

Check out a hilarious review of Wolves’ new ‘Mexico’ kit in the video below…

It is clear to see that Nuno has a severe lack of faith in the young Real Madrid man, so these links to Llorente could be the 45-year-old trying to make amends for choosing the wrong Spaniard in the summer.

The Real Sociedad regular is described as a player who possesses ‘excellent positioning’ and considerable strength in the air – with a passing accuracy of 87.6% and an average of 2.8 aerial duels won per game this season, he could well be an ideal target for the west Midlands outfit.

Transfermarkt rate the defender at £22.5m as his value has been ever-increasing since he joined the Basque Country club.
