Aston Villa star Jack Grealish goaded by Birmingham City fan

Poor Jack Grealish – he can’t even go out shopping without being swarmed by Birmingham City fans.

It’s been a tough year for Grealish in terms of public interaction. In April, during the Second City derby, the Villa captain found himself on the wrong end of a haymaker when a Blues fan scaled the borders, dodged the stewards and blindsided him with a pathetic sucker punch.

And things haven’t improved much since.

While being verbally goaded by a bunch of brave youths almost certainly beats receiving a fist in the kisser, it must be incredibly frustrating for the 24-year-old that he can’t even spend his immeasurable wealth without being badgered by us mere mortals…

On reflection, having watched it a good 15 times, it genuinely looks like they’ve stopped Grealish, told him to wait a moment – presumably whilst they prime their camera for the prank – to then shout in his face.

Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin struggles in first start since injury

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

After a disappointing 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Monday, Arsenal got themselves back on track with a big win at home against Standard Liege.

The Gunners ran out 4-0 winners in the end, with Gabriel Martinelli scoring his third and fourth goals in the Europa League so far this term to open his team’s account on the night. Those two strikes were followed by goals from Joe Willock and Dani Ceballos as Unai Emery’s side ended up comfortable victors.

It was also Hector Bellerin’s first start since returning from injury earlier this month. Unfortunately for the Spain international, he struggled to have an impact on the match despite it being against such inferior opposition.

Of course, there wasn’t too much work to do defensively, as the Islington outfit controlled the ball for much of the game, ending up with 62% possession.

The 24-year-old, though, still didn’t look settled back in the side, failing to make a single tackle whilst also being dribbled past on one occasion. He also won just one of the five ground duels he took part in, meaning he triumphed just 20% of the time.

If there was a negative from the win, it would be Bellerin’s defensive display.

With his team largely in the ascendancy, one would have therefore expected a more dominant display at the other end of the pitch, but that wasn’t the case.

Whilst he did create two chances, he failed to even attempt a cross, and completed just 33% of his dribbles, per SofaScore. Also, he lost possession of the ball no less than 15 times, which is an awful lot for a defender. For some context, no other member of the backline did so on more than 10 occasions.

It seems that Bellerin is still rusty since returning from rupturing his cruciate ligament.

Maybe it is too soon for him to take a regular place on the right, and Calum Chambers should be given more time at right-back.

The former Southampton man has one goal and three assists during his time on the pitch this term, and has conceded just two goals as well. With that in mind, it would be foolish to rush Bellerin back.

It is unfortunate for the former Watford loanee, but his injury may just have put him down the pecking order for a period. He will need a bit of time to get used to playing again, but he may not have too much of that on his hands if Chambers continues to take advantage of the opportunities he is given.

Liverpool’s James Milner delivers a professional verdict after 4-3 win

Milner delivered a professional verdict after Liverpool won 4-3 on Wednesday.

He didn’t get carried away after the win, though he did enjoy a cheeky pop at whoever operated the Anfield scoreboard, which inexplicably read 3-3 when the score was actually 3-1, which of course became quite an impressive prediction by the hour mark.

The midfielder was clear in his message – there is work to be done at Liverpool if they want to retain their European crown.

Everton defender Michael Keane’s battle with Callum Wilson crucial to PL tie

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Some Premier League players may have used the international break as a chance to gain some early-season rest, but for two players it provided a great opportunity for them to test each other out.

On the chalkboard

Callum Wilson and Michael Keane were both part of the England squad for the recent European Championship qualifiers, and the two will come face-to-face on Sunday as Everton visit the Vitality Stadium.

England training, therefore, would have been the perfect setting for them to come up against each other, and both players should be better prepared for the clash as a result.

Keane, in particular, will be looking to bounce back from his disappointing display against Kosovo, in which he gave the ball away 11 times, including a stray pass which allowed the visitors to score the opening goal.

That aside, his two clean sheets from four league games mean he has arguably had a better start to the season than Wilson, who has one goal in the same period, but he could use the events of Tuesday’s international encounter to exploit a possible weakness in the 26-year-old’s game.

A test of speed?

Keane’s average of 5.8 aerial duels won per game in both 2018/19 and so far in 2019/20 suggests he is a defender best suited to a physical, aerial contest, and therefore the upcoming battle with Wilson is likely to be a challenging one, as his success will depend on keeping the striker quiet when the ball is on the floor.

Wilson is yet to get firing this season both in terms of goals and taking on defenders, but his average of 2.3 key passes per game underlines the threat he has posed in the final third, and his link-up with Joshua King could prove vital.

The Everton defender will need to be on top of his game, and avoid the lapse in concentration which led him to give the ball away poorly against Kosovo, as Wilson will be well aware of that particular shortcoming and look to pounce at every opportunity.

The pace of the Cherries man could, therefore, pose a danger on or off the ball, and Eddie Howe may decide to operate a high press in order to force a mistake from Keane.

Despite that, the centre-back has achieved a good amount of interceptions and clearances this season, and if he keeps a close eye on Wilson he may have just enough to keep him quiet.

Newcastle are in serious trouble after Yoshinori Muto’s admission

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Newcastle were soundly beaten by Norwich on Saturday afternoon, and Yoshinori Muto’s verdict on the game may just be the clearest indicator yet that Steve Bruce is out of his depth.

What’s the word?

We’ve heard it all about Bruce at this point. Some fans think he isn’t good enough, some fans think he deserves a chance, some are just fed up and others don’t care as long as Mike Ashley is in charge.

The people who really know the gaffer’s tendencies however, the players, had kept quiet, until now.

After Paul Dummett said the Magpies’ warm-up before the clash with the Canaries “wasn’t right”, Muto has now opened up about how it feels to be a striker in Bruce’s system.

“It was really hard. I felt isolated and I was always surrounded by three or four opponents,” said the Japan international of Saturday’s defeat.

“As a forward that was very tough. As a team we struggled overall.

“When I was watching in the first half I was expecting it to be difficult when I came on because Joelinton was struggling as well.”

Out of his depth

In 66 mintues on the pitch, Joelinton touched the ball just 35 times. In his 24-minute cameo, Muto managed just nine touches, per Whoscored.

Alan Shearer criticised the disconnect between Joelinton and Miguel Almiron on Match of the Day, pointing to the fact that the Brazilian had “no-one within 40 to 50 yards of him”.

The duo were quiet against Arsenal as well, and quite simply, Bruce’s 3-5-2, which is more of a 5-3-2 given the measly 37% possession they had at Carrow Road, isn’t working.

Of his midfield options, none of Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Ki Sung-yeung or Sean Longstaff are particularly attack-minded or creative. When playing five defenders and three midfielders, at least one or two of them need to have the ability to get close to the strikers and provide goals and assists. Bruce just doesn’t have this option.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has been criticised in the past for his out-dated ideas, and Muto’s admission that even the players feel their tactics are failing is quite shocking. Not only that, the 27 year-old says he could see the issue in the first half, yet the manager did absolutely nothing to fix the problem.

It may the clearest indicator yet that Bruce is out of his depth, and the gaffer has a big job on his hands to bring the dressing room around to his system. If he can’t, the implosion many expect will come on Tyneside this season may happen sooner rather than later.

Liverpool fans react to Jurgen Klopp’s comments on Anfield future

[ad_pod ]

After delivering Liverpool’s sixth Champions League title in their history, Jurgen Klopp has well and truly silenced the doubters over his questionable trophy record.

The German’s surprisingly poor run in cup finals came to a superb end when the Reds overcame Tottenham 2-0 in the showpiece finale at the end of last season.

Klopp’s future at Anfield is tied down for the following three years, but speaking on the club’s pre-season tour, the Liverpool boss refused to be drawn into what his future could hold after that.

As reported The Telegraph, the former Borussia Dortmund manager insisted that he would honour his current contract at Anfield, but felt that with three years left to run, it was too early to be concerned about whether he would be staying at the club beyond that.

After James Pearce tweeted an abbreviated version of Klopp’s comments on his long-term future, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

Many supporters of the Merseyside club revealed that they would be heartbroken at the prospect of Klopp potentially leaving Anfield, and hoped that the German would sign a new deal to tie him down for even longer.

Some however raised the possibility that the end of Klopp’s existing contract could nicely tie in to Reds legend Steven Gerrard potentially taking over his boyhood club.

West Ham confirm Haller signing

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United have confirmed the signing of Sebastian Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt.

What’s the word?

The Hammers have broken their transfer record to secure the French striker’s signature in this transfer window.

Indeed, Football FanCast sources have confirmed that the club have paid an initial £45m for Haller, which could rise to £50m depending on certain performance-related bonuses. He has signed a five-year contract in east London.

The former Utrecht striker scored 20 goals in all competitions last season and the deal to sign him far eclipses the £36m paid for Felipe Anderson last summer.

Speaking after the deal was confirmed, he said: “I think it’s a really good opportunity for me to be here.

“It means a lot (to be the club’s most expensive transfer). It proves that the club really wanted me for a long time. I felt this desire to sign me and I’m really happy to sign, also. it is an ambitious club, a nice club, a nice city and nice fans too.

“For me, I can guarantee that I will give 100% for the club because the club has given me this confidence and I will try to give it back every day in every game.

“I will always give 100% and respect the club. I think this is a normal thing and that I can guarantee. I know it’s a big transfer and there is a lot of expectation around me, and I just want to make people proud of this transfer and I will give everything I have.”

A change in the way they operate

West Ham are finally acting like a big club.

Prior to the move to the London Stadium in 2016/17, their record purchase was Andy Carroll, for £15m.

Now, the transfer for Haller is worth treble that and, in sealing the deal, the Irons have solved a major problem position.

With Marko Arnautovic moving to Shanghai SIPG for a fee of £22.5m, per sources, West Ham have acquired a player who is proven at the highest level in his stead – he has been directly involved in 37 goals in 60 games in the Bundesliga, and also netted 41 times in 82 outings in the Eredivisie.

This is a statement of intent from the Irons that they are not about to settle for mid-table obscurity anymore.

Having also secured Pablo Fornals in this transfer window, this is shaping up to be a remarkably exciting season for those fans in east London.

Tottenham: Vincent Janssen has to be sold no matter what this summer

Vincent Janssen’s Tottenham Hotspur career appears to have been over for a seriously long time and surely this should be the summer that they finally pack his bags and send him on his way.

If the fact that he was not used in training squads in preparation for their Champions League final showdown with Liverpool was not making that point any clearer, then we seriously do not know what else would be needed to emphasise his time in north London is over. He might have been ineligible to feature in the final itself, however, there was nothing stopping Mauricio Pochettino from using him in training sessions.

According to a report by Fotomac (via Sport Witness), Fenerbache are thought to have been offered the Dutchman and €19million (£17m) by Spurs to sign their talented playmaker Eljif Elmas this summer.

Although he may have been hit with injuries during his time in Istanbul whilst on loan with them, it is thought he made an impression on the Turkish side – especially in his early days in the Turkish city.

According to Transfermarkt, Janssen made 16 appearances for Fenerbache in the Super Lig, scoring four goals and providing four assists in the 2017/18 campaign – hardly bad going for a player who has been out on the sidelines and fringes of a squad for so long.

To put things into perspective, in his time with Spurs in the Premier League, the 25-year-old managed to net one of their worst ever signings in history.

However, whether Fenerbache are prepared to take a chance on him once again remains to be seen, although Tottenham should not give up hope in trying to offload him this summer if they decide against it.

Apparently, there is thought to be plenty of interest in Janssen this summer, with The Sun claiming there is interest from Schalke 04, as well as clubs in Belgium and China in the £7.2m-rated flop (Transfermarkt).

In that same report, Tottenham are believed to have wanted a transfer fee of around £12m six months ago, but that valuation should have decreased by now as it would be difficult to see any club forking out an eight-figure fee for a player who managed just three appearances for the whole of the 2018/19 campaign and he hardly showed he could be the back up option for Harry Kane Spurs apparently want in the squad.

If Fenerbache decide the deal Tottenham have allegedly proposed with them for Elmas is not something that takes to their fancy, then perhaps Spurs should look at trying to offload him for a figure closer to his valuation suggested by Transfermarkt than the one the club seem to want – especially considering he has just one year left on his £34,000-a-week contract with the club (Spotrac).

Either way, this should be the transfer window that Tottenham help Janssen pack his bags and book him a one-way trip out of north London.

Tottenham fans, do you think the club will finally be able to offload Janssen this summer? Let us know your thoughts below!
