Collier stands firm despite Stanford fallout

David Collier, the ECB chief executive, has said he will not resign in the wake of the Allen Stanford fiasco. Collier admitted he and ECB chairman Giles Clarke have discussed their positions but maintained they still enjoyed the support of the board.Collier and Clarke were seen as the key people behind the board’s now-terminated contracts with the Stanford group, and the pressure has been mounting on the two to quit following the charges of fraud against Stanford.”Certainly I’ve discussed that with Giles but more importantly members of the board have been phoning to say we have full confidence and you must carry on,” Collier told BBC Radio Five’s Sportsweek. “We’ve looked back at all of the events and said ‘what more could we have done at the time?’ It’s not as though we’ve been involved in any of the fraud that is alleged. This is another party altogether.”Collier said he had been urged to stay on. “I have been extremely heartened that many people involved in cricket – and I suppose having worked in the game for 30 years I’ve probably got as many contacts as anyone – have urged me to continue what they see as the immense progress we’ve made over the last four years,” he said. “I’ve certainly looked back and said ‘would we have been able to do things differently?’ and I believe that as professionals we went through all the correct contract procedures.”I believe therefore that I could not have done more at that time and I don’t think the board could have done more. So the answer is no on that [resigning].”The ECB severed all ties with Stanford group earlier this week after the Texan billionaire was charged with fraud in the USA. The development could see the ECB lose a potentially lucrative revenue stream, but the board assured the counties “there would be no impact on fee payments in 2009”.Clarke, who was recently re-elected as chairman, had admitted the ECB may have made an error of judgement in getting involved with Stanford.

Fiery Cann settles dispute with Bermuda board

Bermuda have been boosted by the news that a pay dispute with temperamental allrounder Lionel Cann has been settled and he is now available to take part in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers in April

Cricinfo staff21-Jan-2009Bermuda have been boosted by the news that a pay dispute with temperamental allrounder Lionel Cann has been settled and he is now available to take part in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers in April.Cann, not for the first time, was in conflict with the Bermuda Cricket Board, telling the local press that he felt “totally let dwn” by the board’s attitude towards him and his team-mates. His gripe was that the board was not willing to fully compensate him for giving up two jobs to play for the side. The BCB was willing to cover his main job, but was unhappy with Cann’s claims that he also did other work in the construction industry.”Four years on and nothing has changed,” Cann, who was involved in a similar row before the 2007 World Cup, told the Bermuda Sun. “Some players have lost thousands of dollars to play for their country and they are still losing money. I have to seriously think about whether I can afford to sign it. [his contract].”It’s alright to say that you’re getting paid to do what you love, but it’s different for a man that has a family and bills to pay. It isn’t just that it is a financial struggle, it’s the principle. We had this dispute last time and nothing has changed, I feel totally let down.” In 2007 the BCB said it was unable to find any evidence of Cann’s second job.Cann also complained that the levels of remuneration on offer from the board depended on the money earned from the player’s day job. “It’s a bit unfair that someone who has one well paid job gets more than someone who has to work two jobs to get by, regardless of how they perform on the field.”Cann’s work as a school caretaker means he earns less than many of his team-mates.

Dean ref for Wolves v Man Utd

Many Wolves fans have been left fuming as some news emerged ahead of their game at home against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

As per the official website of the Premier League, it has now been confirmed that Mike Dean will be the on-field referee for the game, while Stuart Attwell will be on VAR duty.

Incidentally, Dean has given more penalty kicks to Man Utd (20) then any other club over the course of his career so far, and the Red Devils are the second-most profitable team in terms of wins (43) behind Chelsea when he is officiating (Transfermarkt).

He has often been accused by the media of making games all about him, and has been involved in controversial Wolves matches because of this (Birmingham Mail).

Wolves fans on Dean appointment

These members of the Molineux faithful fumed as the news was confirmed on Twitter, with one WWFC supporter even going as far as to claim that it is ‘dreadful’:

Celtic: Hutton reacts to Griffiths exit

Football Insider pundit Alan Hutton has been having his say on Leigh Griffiths’ deadline day exit from Celtic Park.

The Lowdown: Dundee move

The Hoops were extremely busy in the final hours of the summer window, with three incomings and three outgoings going through.

One of those departures was Griffiths, who, after signing a new one-year deal at Parkhead earlier in the summer, left to join Dundee on loan.

Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie also left, while Georgios Giakoumakis, Filipe Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers arrived at the club.

However, it was Griffiths’ departure that had former SPL right-back Hutton baffled.

The Latest: Hutton reacts

Hutton was talking to Football Insider about Griffiths’ move on deadline day.

The 36-year-old described it as ‘very interesting’ and backed the Celtic big earner to thrive at Dundee under James McPake.

“It’s interesting. I think the whole situation surrounding Leigh is very interesting.

“We know he had his issues last season. He has been in and out. He signs a new one-year deal and then is nowhere to be seen.

“What’s going on in the background? This boy needs to play football. When match fit and playing week in, week out, he will score you goals. It’s as simple as that.

“He’s a goalscorer but he wasn’t getting the opportunity at Celtic. Whatever the reason might be, we don’t know.

“It’s a club he knows well, he’s been at Dundee before, familiar surroundings. Obviously, James McPake, the manager, has got the confidence of him coming in and scoring goals.

“He needs to play football. He’s at an age now where he doesn’t want all this nonsense behind him affecting his game.

“He just wants to play and score goals. I think this is a move which can help him do that.”

The Verdict: The right decision

It was strange that the 31-year-old signed new terms under Ange Postecoglou and departed without kicking a competitive ball this season, but it is for the best.

Postecoglou has Kyogo Furuhashi, Albian Ajeti, Giakoumakis, Jota and Liel Abada as attacking options and appears to be building for the future with youngsters Karamoko Dembele and Mikey Johnston in the squad.

Griffiths obviously wasn’t in his plans going forward as he didn’t feature, so moving him on to Dundee was the right call.

You’d expect there’s every chance that we have seen Griffiths in a Celtic shirt for the final time with his deal up in the summer, but it will be interesting to see how he gets on at Dens Park.

In other news: Another Celtic summer signing, as well as Urhoghide, isn’t impressing under Ange, says Devlin.

Wolves open Diawara talks with Roma

An update has emerged on AS Roma phenomenon Amadou Diawara, regarding Wolves’ talks over a deal for his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Wolves have opened talks over a deal to sign AS Roma midfielder Amadou Diawara.

Konur claims that Bruno Lage is pushing for the signing and a one-year loan has been proposed to the Italian giants as we enter the final weeks of the transfer window.

Lage would love him

Wolves boss Bruno Lage would love Diawara at the Molineux stadium next season and the club must work hard to ensure that they can get a deal over the line for him. If Roma are willing to accept a one-year loan deal for the powerhouse then it could be a relatively risk-free addition with the potential for it to be a shrewd piece of business.

With a temporary switch, Wanderers would not be burdened by a hefty price tag or the prospect of him having multiple years left on his contract should it not work out. This means that it would not be a massive blow for Wolves if he came in and struggled to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League.

Diawara has had a tricky career to judge as he has been a role player at both Napoli and Roma for the majority of his time in Italy after leaving Bologna. He has only started more than 10 Serie A matches in one season since departing Bologna in 2016, which came in the 2019/20 campaign for Roma. In that year, he averaged a solid WhoScored rating of 6.71 and made 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game.

The enforcer’s coach at Napoli, Fabrizio Tazzioli, hailed him as a phenomenon, saying: “I saw the guy in training and thought that he is a phenomenon. He is not as strong physically, but better with his feet and has the same presence on the pitch.”

This highlights the impact the £84k-per-week beast could have on Wolves’ midfield if given a larger part to play than he has been given at Roma and, previously, Napoli. Lage could love working with the Guinea international to help bring out the best in him, with his defensive instincts potentially good enough to provide a screen in front of the defence alongside Moutinho or Ruben Neves.

The 24-year-old has a career average of three tackles and interceptions per game, although that is skewed downwards by the large number of substitute appearances he has made. Therefore, he could arrive in the Midlands and be a midfield tank for Lage, which is why he could enjoy having him in the squad next term.

Leeds pundit drops big take on Pereira move

Joe Wainman, formerly of All Leeds TV and now host of the JustJoe Football Show, insists that the club will not make a move to sign Matheus Pereira from West Bromwich Albion this summer.

Pereira has been linked with a number of clubs in this transfer window.

West Ham United have been heavily linked with a potential move to sign him, as have Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal FC.

To that end, Pereira has even released a statement claiming that he hopes to leave the Baggies in this transfer window, although he intends to do so in the proper manner.

Wainman claims that various Leeds supporters have commented on his YouTube videos asking why the club are not interested in a deal to sign the Brazilian.

But he cannot foresee the club trying to seal a transfer for the star, who scored 11 goals in the Premier League last season despite the Baggies’ relegation and is currently preparing for life in the Championship.

He said: “It doesn’t look like there is a real credible link there for Leeds United, because we have already been making the moves, like we have with Conor Gallagher.

“But a lot of Leeds fans especially, you know, on my YouTube comments, say ‘why don’t we go for Matheus Pereira?’

“But I think he’s wanted by a host of clubs in the Premier League and I just don’t think Leeds United are one of them.”

Arsenal target Odegaard over Maddison

Leicester City have received a potentially significant boost ahead of the upcoming campaign, with key midfielder James Maddison appearing more likely to remain at the club.

What’s the story?

The highly-rated 24-year-old has been linked with a move to fellow Premier League side Arsenal over the summer, but a recent report from The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath claims that the capital club are more likely to sign Real Madrid’s Martin Odegaard.

“They are also still interested in Martin Odegaard, who excelled on loan from Real Madrid last season, and their pursuit of the Norwegian could go into the final days of the window,” McGrath wrote.

“Odegaard is a more likely option than Leicester City’s James Maddison, who has also been of interest.”

Leicester City fans will be buzzing

News that the Gunners have reportedly turned their attention to Odegaard will leave Leicester supporters buzzing.

Maddison has established himself as a key figure for the Foxes since arriving at the King Power Stadium back in 2018, scoring 27 goals and providing 20 assists in 119 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ charges, winning the FA Cup and Community Shield along the way.

It is a measure of his importance to the team that he was their highest-ranked player on WhoScored for their Europa League run last season, as well as their second-highest during the 2019/20 Premier League.

His impressive performances for the Midlands club over the last three years attracted the attention of the Arsenal hierarchy, who offered an ambitious player-plus-cash deal for his services.

The capital club made Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock, Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles available for Leicester after baulking at their £60m asking price for Maddison, but Rodgers and director of football Jon Rudkin weren’t interested.

With Leicester in an extremely healthy position due to Maddison’s current contract not expiring until the summer of 2024, Arsenal appear to have moved on to a cheaper alternative to the Englishman, allowing Foxes fans to breathe a sigh of relief.

Rodgers will now be hoping that the 24-year-old can return to top form and fire the club to a top-four finish next May, something which has cruelly evaded them since the Northern Irishman’s arrival from Celtic two-and-a-half years ago.

Saints fans love Broja signing

Southampton fans are absolutely delighted at the news they have signed Armando Broja on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

After a slow start to their transfer window, the Saints have finally kicked into gear. The south-coast outfit captured Romain Perraud (southamptonfc.com), Danyl Simeu (chelseafc.com) and Valentino Livramento – the latter two from Chelsea – while they have agreed a fee with Blackburn for Adam Armstrong (The Athletic).

Ralph Hasenhuttl will be hoping these new arrivals will help them improve on their 15th place Premier League finish from last term.

Now, they have brought in another fresh face, also from Chelsea, in Broja. The £2.7m-valued 19-year-old spent last term on loan at Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands and scored 11 goals in 34 games for the club (Transfermarkt) – he could be prove to be an inspired new arrival for the Saints.

The news was shared on Southampton’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.
