Darren Pattinson has reiterated his desire to add to his one England cap even though he has a contract with Victoria for the next Australian season. He said his recent experiences have been “really difficult” for him and his family, but he is determined not to let it effect him on the field.Pattinson, who was dropped after his debut appearance at Headingley last week, appeared to suggest that he was ready to turn his back on England with his family wanting to move back to Melbourne. “A big part of it is me wanting to be in Australia for six months and playing for [Victoria],” he said. “I’ve got a meeting with the chairman of selectors in a few days to discuss a few things. But my family want to live in Melbourne, so that’s a big part of it.”However, he now says that he is determined to ensure he doesn’t join the one-cap wonder club after taking two wickets against South Africa. “It’s worked out well for me at Nottinghamshire and when I signed my only target was to prove that I could cut it at county level,” he said. “Things have moved on a lot quicker than I expected and I’ve set myself new goals which include earning further recognition for England.”Pattinson added that the last few weeks have been a tough time for his family. He hadn’t expected the type of attention he has received since surprisingly being handed his debut. “I’ve got a young family who have travelled halfway around the world with me and they have found the last month really difficult,” he said. “The media interest that has surrounded my selection was new to us and something that, naively, I didn’t expect.”I now need to focus on things that I can control and it’s been shown that if I perform well for Nottinghamshire and conditions are favourable then I can force my way into the selectors’ thoughts. It all starts with club form and I will be doing everything that I can to produce good performances for Nottinghamshire and Victoria.”Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, said that while Pattinson’s plans are currently to return and play for Victoria, as an overseas player, in October that those could change if he is handed further England honours. He has been named in the 30-man Champions Trophy squad, while there will also be a Lions tour in the winter.”The ECB have always been aware that Darren has a contract with Victoria and he’ll play for them as an overseas player this winter,” Newell said. “At this moment in time, his only winter commitments are with Victoria but if he is selected to play for England then obviously that will change.”Darren is certainly not ruling himself out of possible selection for England and we are already looking to extend his contract at Nottinghamshire. He has a long-term future in this country and he can combine that with his winter commitments in Australia.”

Sunday's game marks the end of an era for umpire Ken Palmer

The final match of the season at the County Ground on Sunday when the Sabres take on Durham Dynamos will mark the end of an era for one of the umpires who will be standing out in the middle

Richard Walsh21-Sep-2002The final match of the season at the County Ground on Sunday when the Sabres take on Durham Dynamos will mark the end of an era for one of the umpires who will be standing out in the middle. For Ken Palmer, who played for Somerset between 1955 and 1969 this will be the last match at county level that he ever umpires.Ken, who was born in Southampton and brought up in Devizes was an all rounder with a considerable pedigree. During his years with the Cidermen he made over 300 first class appearances, scoring over 7500 runs at 20.73 and taking 837 wickets at a cost of 21.11 each.In 1961 he became the first player since the second world war and the youngest Somerset player ever to achieve the much coveted double when he scored 1036 runs and took well over 100 wickets.Thirty five years ago Ken played for Somerset in their first ever Lords final against Kent in the Gillette Cup, and his final duty at cricket’s headquarters was appropriately enough acting as third umpire in this year’s final.Ken reached the age of 65 earlier in the season, and when the game finishes on Sunday evening he will be hanging up his umpiring jacket for the last time.Since he first joined the umpires list thirty years ago Ken Palmer has become a familiar figure and as well as umpiring in 22 Test Matches and 23 Limited Over Internationals he has become one of the most respected on the county circuit. After being involved with the first class game for nearly fifty years when he retires Ken hopes to remain involved with the game that has given him a living for so long.

Elworthy overlooked for ICC Champions Throphy

Steve Elworthy has once again been overlooked by the national selectors as they put together the South African squad for the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy to be played in Sri Lanka starting on 12 September

Keith Lane29-Aug-2002Steve Elworthy has once again been overlooked by the national selectors as they put together the South African squad for the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy to be played in Sri Lanka starting on 12 September.Elworthy who holds a UCBSA contract and who trained with the South African squad that went to Morocco was omitted from the touring party in favour of Alan Dawson coming in for Western Province teammate of Roger Telemachus. Dawson who has played 4 one-day internationals for South Africa is a medium pace bowler that swings the ball away and might be effective on the slower Sri Lankan pitches.Telemachus has been withdrawn from the squad as a precautionary measure for medical reasons. “Roger will see a doctor on Friday, but as a precaution we have decided to withdraw him from the squad,” said the convenor of national selectors, Omar Henry, today.Gary Kirsten has also been dropped from the squad, opening the doors for the KwaZulu-Natal captain Dale Benkenstein. Benkenstein at 28 years of age has played in 20 one-day internationals his last being at Sharjah in March 2000. Benkenstein at one stage was rumoured to take over the captaincy roll from Hansie Cronje is a middle order specialist with an average of 19.73 and a highest score of 69.Gary Kirsten has been included in the South African A squad who meet Australia A in seven one-day matches starting in Potchefstroom on Wednesday 4 September. “We feel that Gary has a better chance of batting his way back into the mainstream playing in home conditions against Australia A than he would in Sri Lanka,” Henry said.”Both of these players (Dawson and Benkenstein) have a proven track record in the sub-continent and we believe they will be very well suited to the conditions in Sri Lanka,” Henry said. He added: “There were other players who came into the picture, like Steve Elworthy and Neil McKenzie, but we preferred to keep them here in South Africa to be able to better measure them against Australia A.”For the rest the team picked itself. Neil Dippenaar played well enough in Morocco to establish himself in the team, while Justin Ontong has been given another chance to settle into international cricket. Makhaya Ntini can only improve from his Morocco showing. The full South African squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 is:Shaun Pollock (captain) KwaZulu-Natal

Nicky Boje Free State
Mark Boucher Border
Alan Dawson Western Province
Boeta Dippenaar Free State
Allan Donald Free State
Herschelle Gibbs Western Province

Cardiff City interested in Matty James

Cardiff City are interested in a deal to bring Matty James to the Cardiff City Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Mail, who claim that Mick McCarthy’s side are considering a move for the Leicester City midfielder at the end of his current contract at the King Power Stadium, which is due to expire this month.

It is also reported that a number of other Championship sides are keen on a move for the 29-year-old, including Bristol City, with the former Foxes manager Nigel Pearson believed to be eager to link up with one of his old players.

McCarthy must move

With McCarthy undoubtedly looking to improve on the Bluebirds’ impressive eighth-place finish in the Championship in their upcoming campaign, the 62-year-old will be looking to bring in a number of improvements to his current squad this summer.

And, considering James’ form while on loan at Coventry City in the second half of last season, as well as the £900k-rated man’s experience of playing in the Premier League with Leicester, he would very much appear to be an addition who could help Cardiff take their game to the next level in 2021/22.

Indeed, out of the £32k-per-week midfielder’s 117 appearances for the Foxes, over which he has scored five goals and provided 13 assists, 42 of those outings have come in the top flight of English football, with James notably playing a crucial role in the club’s great escape from relegation back in 2014/15.

And, while a number of injuries have prevented the 29-year-old from featuring on a more regular basis for Brendan Rodgers’ side, the former England U20 international highly impressed during a loan spell at Coventry last season, scoring three goals and providing three assists over his 23 Championship appearances for the Sky Blues.

That’s in addition to making an average of 1.6 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.3 key passes per game, culminating in a seasonal WhoScored match rating of 6.88.

As such, the man whom Leicestershire Live writer Jordan Blackwell dubbed a “grafter” would very much be a fantastic addition to the Cardiff City midfield next season. Mick McCarthy should do all he can to get a deal over the line for the 29-year-old this summer, particularly as he won’t cost Vincent Tan a penny in transfer fees.

The return of Mushfiqur Rahman

Mushfiqur Rahman, the right arm medium pacer from Rajshahi district, hit theeyes in 1998 for the first time

Shahryar Khan02-Jun-2002Mushfiqur Rahman, the right arm medium pacer from Rajshahi district, hit theeyes in 1998 for the first time. He gained more attention when he got theprecious wicket of Sachin Tendulkar twice. Mushfiqur can operate the newball too, as we saw him bowling with Hasibul Hussain in a couple of limitedover international matches and he carried on well at those moments. As a handy batsman Mushfiqur first showed his batting capabilities inJanuary 2000 against the touring Australian Common Wealth Bank Academy, notched up a brilliant century at Rajshahi in a three-day match. These wereenough to get the call for the Test team that were heading off for Zimbabwein April 2000.That was Bangladesh’s first away tour and Mushfiqur became a flop show inthe two Tests Bangladesh played. He was horrible with the bat and didn’tbowl well all throughout. As he is branded as a batting all rounder, hisfailure with the willow disappointed everyone. He carried away with hissilly shots in the four innings he batted – none of them offered him even adouble figure. In the ODI series he wasn’t that bad if we take notice of the first one-daywhen he made a mark with his bat (31 runs in an excruciating situation), butwith his gentle medium pace he remained ineffective. As a result he wasruled out for the next 8 Tests Bangladesh played and was almost forgottenfor more than twelve months.By this time national squad included some new faces; they found sometalented batsman and some young energetic bowlers too, but hardly found anyall rounder. Actually Bangladesh can name three players as genuine allrounders and Mushfiqur is one of them. The other two are Khaled MahmudSujon, who is a veteran fighter; Neeyamur Rashid had real potentials to be afirst-rate all rounder (Somehow he squandered this).Neeyamur Rashid is currently out of the race, therefore, the contest islimited between the other two – Mushfiqur and Khaled Mahmud. Mahmud’s pluspoint is his experience and Mushfiqur played too well this year in premierleague, scored a lot of runs and pulled of with bags of wickets. The tour to Sri Lanka is just around the corner and both would be called infor the campaign in BKSP starting from the first week of June. This is thesecond good chance Mushfiqur is getting to prove his worth – no doubt!
