'I was trying to hit every ball for four or six' – Brendon McCullum

Brendon McCullum has insisted that he was not aware of breaking the record for the fastest Test century until it had been announced over the Hagley Oval loudspeaker and flashed up on the big screen

Brydon Coverdale in Christchurch20-Feb-2016For nearly 30 years, Viv Richards has sat on top of the list of fastest Test centuries. Few men have come seriously close to usurping King Viv, like Adam Gilchrist did at the WACA in 2006-07. His 57-ball effort was one short of Richards’ 56-ball hundred, scored against England in Antigua in 1985-86. Misbah-ul-Haq then equalled Richards’ record in Abu Dhabi in 2014-15. But it took Brendon McCullum to break it.McCullum’s 54-ball century against Australia at the Hagley Oval came with a boundary slapped over extra cover off Josh Hazlewood, and viewers around the world knew that a world record had been broken. But McCullum himself insisted that he was unaware of the milestone until it had been announced over the Hagley Oval loudspeaker and flashed up on the big screen.”No idea,” McCullum said after play on the first day. “I was trying to hit every ball for four or six. I wasn’t aware of the record but very respectful of all those who’ve held it before. It’d be nice to win the Test match, that’d be the most important thing.”[Viv Richards] was my idol growing up. It’s nice to be able to go past him but jeez, he was a cracking player, an incredible cricketer. I’m almost a bit embarrassed to go past him, to be honest. Hopefully he enjoyed a bit of the ‘stroke-making’, we’ll call it.”McCullum had some good fortune along the way, most notably when he slashed a delivery from James Pattinson and was brilliantly caught by a diving Mitchell Marsh at gully. However, the umpires checked the replays and confirmed that Pattinson had delivered a no-ball, the third time this summer that he had cost himself a wicket in that way, after his no-balls twice reprieved West Indies’ Carlos Brathwaite at the MCG.”I thought it was four as soon as I hit it, then I turned around and it was their third great catch of the day,” McCullum said. “Steve Smith’s catches were phenomenal as well. We talked about that they do push the front line a little bit. You’re always hopeful but you don’t anticipate it actually being a no-ball so it was quite a nice reprieve. It probably loosens you up a little bit and relaxes you a bit more. You know you’re probably not meant to be out there so you might as well play with even more freedom.”Brendon McCullum benefited from a slice of luck and smashed his way to the fastest Test century•Getty Images

Initially, it did not seem that this would be McCullum’s day, after he again lost the toss on a green pitch and Steven Smith sent the hosts in. But more or less as soon as McCullum walked out to bat with the score on 32 for 3, his fortune turned. Asked when he got the impression this might be his day, McCullum was honest.”Probably second ball when I had an almighty, filthy slog and it went over the slips cordon for four,” he said. “When you’re confronted with wickets like that you know you’re going to have to be pretty aggressive and need some luck, and we got quite a bit of luck. That partnership between Corey [Anderson] and I was great fun but also instrumental for us to hopefully set the Test match up.””I’ve been on the other side many times and you walk off and think ‘jeez if I’d reined it in a little bit who knows what would have happened’. On that wicket the feedback from the boys was that at any stage the ball could have your name on it. I tried to be as positive as I possibly could and hoped things would roll our way.”When Corey came out he played aggressively and we started to get some momentum. We were able to knock them off that difficult length at the top of off stump. If you’re just trying to hang in there on that wicket, around the top of off stump, you’re in big trouble. It’s nice when things come off.”The partnership of 179 between Anderson and McCullum set New Zealand on the path to a first-innings total of 370 from just 65.4 overs, which was a remarkable performance given the helpful conditions for Australia’s fast men. McCullum joked that “about 120” seemed like it might be an acceptable score on that pitch, before refining his comments and declaring that “anything over 200, we thought, you’re in the game”.”We saw at the Basin as well that that wicket actually dried out a little bit quicker than what we hoped for,” he said. “For us it was a matter of trying to score our runs as quick as we could so the pitch didn’t have the opportunity to dry out too much.”In the end, we faced 60-odd overs and the ball still went around in that last session as well. I think tomorrow morning’s really important. It seems to do a lot more in the morning session here so we’ve got to be on our lengths. If we bowl well, we’ll get some opportunities. Then it’s a matter of whether we take them or not.”

A brief Gayle and then a storm

Having been dropped for a match last week, Chris Gayle seemed to recover his early-overs mojo against Delhi Daredevils. Three balls into his innings here, he had the stands buzzing. Tim Southee’s first ball was hit straight, and might have gone for four if it hadn’t hit the stumps at the other end. The next ball was carved through the offside and the following one lifted into the sightscreen. But just when the Chinnaswamy seemed primed for a Gayle special, he cracked the next ball straight to Deepak Hooda at midwicket. The pincushion
Harshal Patel might have been displeased when Sarfaraz Khan refused to attempt a second run off the last ball of the innings, but the rest of their side had only love for the young batsman. Virat Kohli was first on to the field to congratulate Sarfaraz for his knock. He clasped his hands together and bowed, offering a lighthearted . Other team-mates were a lot more hands on, mobbing Sarfaraz with back pats, bum slaps, and friendly knocks to the helmet. Thoroughly manhandled, Sarfaraz was still smiling when he eventually made it off the field. The mix-up
Dinesh Karthik had already flung his bat several metres when he had played a part in the miscommunication that led to AB de Villiers’ run out. He was cursing again when in the 17th over, he turned back for a second after Sarfaraz had hit one towards deep midwicket, but was sent back by his partner, a tad late. Karthik’s dive could not save him, but Sarfaraz would ensure the innings stayed on course for 200.The backhand
Sarfaraz had not been at the crease long, but having uppercut his first four, felt brave enough to try a rare innovation. James Faulkner sent down a length ball outside off stump and Sarfaraz played a reverse shot of sorts, only he used the back of his bat instead of the face. Though he sent the ball towards the third man area he had been aiming for, he could not get enough power on the shot to fetch more than a single.

Começamos o jogo muito bem, trocando passes, o time bem espaçado. A bola não entra, começa a bater aquela ansiedade. Finalizamos trinta vezes.

Kyle Mills, the New Zealand quick bowler, will play no further part in the ODI series against Pakistan due to a groin strain. With Tim Southee and Trent Boult rested for this series, Mills’ injury leaves New Zealand with a raw pace attack – Mitchell McClenaghan with 25 ODIs is the most experienced quick.Mills, 34, suffered the injury while bowling in the nets ahead of the second ODI in Sharjah on Friday. Mills will fly home for further assessment of his injury, and it is still unclear how long he will be sidelined by it. Mills has already missed the 2007 World Cup due to a knee injury, and missed part of the 2011 campaign due to a quadricep strain. No replacement has yet been named for Mills. The one-day series is tied 1-1 after two games, with three more over the next week.

Bravo, Smith, Russell will beef up team – Ramdin

Denesh Ramdin, the West Indies wicketkeeper, has said the team’s confidence has not been hampered despite consecutive losses to India A to open their tour

Renaldo Matadeen06-Oct-2014Denesh Ramdin, the West Indies wicketkeeper, has said the team’s confidence has not been hampered despite consecutive losses to India A to open their tour. Despite a century from Ramdin, West Indians lost the second tour match by 16 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Even so, he said, the team was optimistic ahead of Wednesday’s ODI series opener against India with reinforcements such as ODI captain Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smith and Andre Russell due following the end of the Champions League T20.”We are right where we want to be,” Ramdin said. “Bravo, Smith and Russell still have to slot in. That will give [Kieron] Pollard and [Darren] Sammy more finishing power at the end. Today, we kept losing wickets consistently. But we can take some confidence going into the next game.”It was a very good pitch for batting [today]. With the amount of seamers we have, they came and hit the lengths and the balls carried through quite nicely. They hit a couple of edges and I did what I had to do behind – cleaning up and I got five catches. We could have bowled better with the new ball.”Ramdin starred with an industrious 102, but was unhappy he hadn’t stayed at the crease long enough to finish the chase of 283. “It was a good day in terms of my glove-work and then batting and getting a good score,” he said. “But I wasn’t happy in terms of batting right down to the end and finishing off the game for the team.”Ramdin also praised Jason Holder and Sammy for their fifties but said the top order needed to support the middle order better. For the second match in a row, both openers fell cheaply. India A’s top order, on the other hand, sparkled once again, with Unmukt Chand scoring a century and Karun Nair a brisk 64 at No. 3.”It’s very important that our batters put runs on the board,” Ramdin said. “We have to get early wickets and put their middle and lower order under pressure.”Ramdin said the seamers would play a crucial role as the tour progressed, singling out Jerome Taylor as a potential trump card. He added that with Sunil Narine out, “guys would have to pull their weight more and come up with the goods.”

Persistent showers force abandonment

ScorecardShowers that began the previous night and persisted through Friday morning and afternoon ended any chance of play on the second day of the Indians’ warm-up match against Leicestershire. The umpires were meant to carry out an inspection at half past two in the afternoon, but their decision was made easier by the rain, which came down strongly, having stopped for an hour-long interval around lunch. The covers had not been removed from overnight with the incessant drizzle dampening one of the largest outfields in cricket while causing large puddles to form across the covers that the groundstaff worked hard to clear but in vain. Incidentally the BCCI twitter even tweeted a premature message an hour before lunch: “Second day’s play of the warm-up between Leicestershire and Indians has been called off due to rain.”Having managed quality batting time the Indians did not seem overly bothered. The visitors came to the ground at noon before heading to the indoor nets where they trained under the watchful eye of their coach Duncan Fletcher.

Sri Lanka book another final spot; holders out

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsLahiru Thirimanne lifted Sri Lanka with a lively 44•ICC

West Indies banked on a frenetic finish, but Sri Lanka’s bowlers had choked the chase to suffocation-point before heavy rain, then marble-sized hail, cut the innings short and sent Sri Lanka to yet another major final. When the heavens opened, West Indies had needed 81 from 37 balls, with six wickets remaining. The Duckworth-Lewis calculation had them 27 runs adrift. It was always a dangerous ploy to begin the chase slowly, but doubly so with rain in the air, and against an attack that features better death bowlers than most in the competition. West Indies had actually scored 17 from the first, wayward over from Nuwan Kulasekara, but as an unambitious Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels hunkered down, they mustered only 17 from the next six.Sri Lanka’s spinners were allowed to settle, and soon, even the expansive shots were being mistimed. Dwayne Bravo tonked 30 for 19, as messages from the dugout implored Samuels to shift into overdrive, but when Bravo fell in the 14th over, West Indies’ chances grew desperately slim.Darren Sammy, who has been the finisher of the tournament, was about to face his first ball when the weather intruded. Two Lasith Malinga overs remained, however, and the required rate may have been beyond even Sammy’s rapid blade.Only Tillakaratne Dilshan prospered out of Sri Lanka’s senior batsmen, and even he scored only at a run-a-ball, running two batsmen out, including himself, in the process. Kusal Perera’s bold 26 from 12 and Angelo Mathews’ canny 40 from 23 gave the innings its flourishes, while Lahiru Thirimanne’s 44 from 35 was its substance.Perera had dealt powerfully to Krishmar Santokie through the leg side, to set Sri Lanka off at more than 10 an over in the first four, before Santokie had him playing on to a leg cutter. Mahela Jayawardene, so often Sri Lanka’s big-game performer, was dismissed cruelly before he had had the chance to make an impact with the bat. Dilshan called him through after chopping one to point, but sharp work in the infield and a good throw over the stumps caught Jayawardene short, before he faced a ball. Kumar Sangakkara’s demise for 1 from six balls was of his own making. He pushed out early against a slower Samuel Badree ball and lobbed a simple catch to the bowler.Dilshan lacked fluency, as he has done throughout the tournament, but combined sagely with Thirimanne for 42 to lift Sri Lanka from 49 for 3. He would run himself out too, haring out of the crease when there was no run to be had, but Thirimanne completed the recovery, striking two sixes – including an uppercut over third man off Andre Russell. Thirimanne’s innings was as secure as it was well-paced, setting the team up for a death-over spike, with wickets in the bank.Mathews had been tentative against Sunil Narine early in his innings, often having his outside edge beaten as he prodded. But having been 13 from 14 balls, he gathered pace against Santokie in the penultimate over, to help deliver a furious finish worth 32 in the final two overs. Mathews slammed Santokie over long-on first ball, before collecting a four in the same spot. Then, when West Indies strengthened the on side, he made room to loft a length ball over cover for four. A flat, fast six over cover next over was the shot of the innings, and a hooked four sent Sri Lanka to 160, before Mathews was athletically caught at deep midwicket by an advancing Bravo, last ball.Dwayne Smith slogged a four then launched a six off the first two balls of the reply, but following that over, West Indies slowed almost to a stall – first by choice, then by coercion. Malinga arrived in the Powerplay and in his first over bowled Gayle, then Smith with offcutters, before Llendl Simmons was out lbw to Seekkuge Prasanna’s first ball of the tournament. At 34 for 3 in the eighth over, West Indies had backed themselves into a mighty corner.Bravo lashed out valiantly as Sri Lanka’s slow-bowling phalanx sought to tamp the run rate down even further. He walloped Rangana Herath and Prasanna over cover, but with Samuels flatlining at the other end and Sri Lanka’s fielders throwing themselves around to save boundaries, he could not quite spur a game-breaking charge. A Kulasekara slower ball had him caught at square leg as the required rate spiked over 12. When wild winds brought the downpour over the Sher-e-Bangla later in that over, Samuels was unbeaten on 18 from 29.
