A new-look Lions leadership pack, headed by Stephen Cook, will take the franchise into the 2014/15 season. Cook has been appointed first-class and 50-overs captain while Neil McKenzie will lead their 20-over side. Batsman Temba Bavuma will act as deputy in all three formats. Alviro Petersen, who stepped down as captain last season, remains part of Lions’ squad but has not been tasked with any leadership duties.”I am greatly honoured to have been given this job. I grew up on the banks of the Wanderers watching my dad play and leadership is something I’ve always wanted to be involved in,” Cook told ESPNcricinfo. “I know its going to be a tough challenge but I am really looking forward to it.”After finishing second in the first-class competition and winning the twenty-over trophy in the 2012/13 season, Lions were rudely brought back down to earth last summer. They finished bottom of the points table in all three competitions in a season that was plagued by injuries and unhappiness. While seamer Chris Morris battled an ankle injury, Petersen stood down on the morning of a match after what he called interference by the selectors, forcing Thami Tsolekile to take over at the 11th hour. That marked the lowest point in the Lions’ dismal season and Cook is keen to move on. “Our players did not become bad overnight. I think what happened is because we had done so well the season before, we didn’t adapt to the fact that other teams had improved and we were caught on the hop,” he said. “But we have resisted the urge to make too many changes.”Lions have held on to their players from last summer and have made two additions to their group. Devon Conway, who was named the provincial one-day cricketer of the year at CSA’s awards last week, has been added to the contracted list along with under-19 World Cup winner Kagiso Rabada, who made his first-class debut at the end of last season. They have three nationally-contracted players on their books: Petersen, Quinton de Kock and Lonwabo Tsotsobe and an experienced core which includes Cook, McKenzie and Tsolekile. McKenzie will turn 39 in the coming season but has committed himself to playing in all formats for Lions.Cook has made it clear everyone, including the new faces, will have more demanded of them this season. “We are all really motivated to do well and guys know they will get will get pressed a little harder and asked to work a little smarter,” he said. For Cook, the goal is simple. He wants the franchise to be able to add to the trophy cupboard and if he has it his way, it will be in the longest format. “Every competition is important but for me, it would be most special to win the first-class [competition] because that is the one that really tests you as a squad,” he said. “You have to play good cricket for 40 days, whereas with the limited-overs [game] you could end up third and have a good day and then make the final. The first-class is also the competition I have never won with Lions. The last time they won it here was the season before I made my professional debut.”That was 15 years ago in the 1999/2000 season, before the franchise system had formed. Back then, all Cook wanted to do was play for what was then Gauteng and eventually for South Africa. A decade and a half later, it is still all he wants. “I have never given up on playing for South Africa. That’s my driving force.”Cook is a regular among the top ten run-scorers in the first-class competition but has struggled for higher honours largely because of where he bats – in the top two. The presence of Graeme Smith in the Test team made it difficult for Cook to get a look-in but with Smith retired, a vacancy in the national team and a platform from which to audition for it, Cook still believes anything is possible, for both him and his Lions.

Glamorgan gave themselves a fighting chance of qualifying for the Yorkshire Bank 40 semi-finals after easing to a 68-run win over Leicestershire at Swansea. The win over the Foxes was their seventh in the competition this season and their most comprehensive. Glamorgan now have to beat Yorkshire at Headingley in their final Group C match on Monday and hope other results go their way to make the last four.In front of a big crowd, Glamorgan cracked 303 for 6 from their 40 overs with Chris Cooke top scoring with 85 from 76 balls. In reply Leicestershire could only make 235 for 6 with Niall O’Brien making 92.For Glamorgan there were also useful contributions from Murray Goodwin, who struck 48 from 19 balls, including four sixes and Mark Wallace and Gareth Rees. The only Leicestershire bowler to emerge with credit was off spinner James Sykes, who claimed 2 for 37 from his eight overs.Glamorgan, who won the toss, were given a positive start by Wallace and Rees who amassed 84 in the opening 12 overs – 60 from the opening eight-over Powerplay – before Wallace was bowled by Ben Raine. Cooke and Rees continued the good opening, reaching 100 in the 17th over. But with the total on 148 Rees went leg before to Sykes, who struck again to have Jim Allenby caught at shot extra-cover.Cooke reached his 50 from 49 balls and struck Rob Taylor over midwicket for six as Glamorgan reached the 200-mark in the 32nd over.Glamorgan lost captain Marcus North caught behind but that heralded Goodwin’s productive innings. He began with a four and glance for six over deep square-leg, followed by a lofted off-drive for six before Cooke was caught at long-off off Raine.Goodwin carried on his assault hitting a no-ball from Raine for six and then scooping a four to long-leg, before clipping Shiv Thakor for yet another maximum. He seemed on course to equal the record of Stewart Walters, who posted a 19-ball fifty against Lancashire in 2011 at Colwyn Bay, but in looking for a six he was caught on the deep midwicket boundary off Nathan Buck.Leicestershire suffered a major blow in their reply when they lost captain Josh Cobb in only the second over after being caught behind off Jim Allenby. In the next over Greg Smith was also caught behind, this time off Michael Hogan, to leave Leicestershire struggling on 12 for 2.In trying to push the score along Ned Eckersley was bowled by Allenby as the visitors further slipped to 28 for 3. That became 53 for 4 when off-spinner Andrew Salter bowled Thakor. By the halfway stage of their Leicestershire had limped to 68 for 4 needing 11.75-an-over.O’Brien reached his 50, but from 84 balls with only two fours, and he was followed to the landmark by Michael Thornley from 53 balls with a six and four fours before he holed out to midwicket five overs from the end. O’Brien perished eight short of his century caught at mid-on off Allenby, who finished with figures of 3 for 37.

No segundo, sentimos demais a questão física.

É a terceira rodada.

Eu fiquei no banco.

Narine won't be added to T20 World Cup squad despite IPL form, Pollard confirms

The West Indies captain, meanwhile, hopes to have “a fit Andre Russell” during the tournament

Matt Roller12-Oct-2021Sunil Narine produced one of the IPL’s best-ever individual performances in Monday’s eliminator but West Indies will resist the temptation to parachute him into their squad for the upcoming men’s T20 World Cup ahead of the ICC’s deadline on Friday.Narine took 4 for 21 – including the wickets of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell – to restrict Royal Challengers Bangalore to 138 for 7 in Sharjah, before hitting the first three legal balls he faced for six as a pinch-hitting No. 5 to ensure Kolkata Knight Riders’ progress to the second Qualifier against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday. Since the IPL’s resumption in the UAE, he has taken 11 wickets in eight matches, conceding 6.12 runs per over.Related

But Narine has not played international cricket since August 2019 for a variety of reasons and missed the cut for West Indies’ T20 World Cup squad when it was announced last month after failing to meet the board’s minimum fitness criteria. Roger Harper, the lead selector, said at the time: “Sunil Narine is a great miss for a team like this in a tournament like this. Any team would miss having a bowler of that quality in the team but… [he] did not make our fitness standards.”Speaking from the team’s base in Dubai on Tuesday, Kieron Pollard, West Indies’ captain and a close friend of Narine’s, refused to be drawn further on Narine’s non-inclusion but indicated that there would not be any changes to the 15-man squad, barring injury or illness. “That has been explained,” Pollard said. “If I add my two cents or my words on how his non-inclusion came about, then it could be spun – just like how he’s bowling on these Sharjah wickets – in all different directions. Let’s deal with the fifteen guys that we have here at this moment in time, which is more important, and see if we can rally around these guys and see if we can defend our title.”I have no comments on that. Enough has been said on that. I think persons have explained the reason of his non-inclusion at this point in time. For me personally, I know Sunil Narine as a friend first, before an international cricketer. We grew up playing cricket together. He is a world-class cricketer.”‘Looking forward to having a fit Russell’
Narine’s KKR team-mate Andre Russell, has not played a game in the IPL since September 26 due to injury. Eoin Morgan, the franchise’s captain, said last week that Russell was “pushing hard” to be fit for the playoffs and he has resumed training, but was not fit enough to play a part in the win against Royal Challengers. Pollard said he hoped to have “a fit Andre Russell” for the World Cup, but said clarity was unlikely until he joined up with the West Indies camp.Andre Russell has not played a game in the IPL since September 26•BCCI

“Before I make any assumptions as to what he can or he can’t do, we need to do our assessment first as a team,” Pollard said. “We haven’t had the opportunity to see him. We’ve gotten reports as to what he has done. I wouldn’t want to get into trying to say what he can or can’t do at this point in time.”He’s a critical person for our team and we’d love for him to be 100%, but we have to deal with what’s in front of us. Let’s see what happens over the next couple of days. KKR have another game tomorrow and then, if they get through to the final, on Friday. When we see him as a management staff, we’ll be able to assess and ascertain what he can or can’t do, but we’re looking forward to having a fit Andre Russell if possible.”Pollard will be taking part in his first World Cup – in either 50-overs or T20 cricket – since the 2014 World T20, having missed the 2015 and 2019 tournaments due to non-selection and the 2016 edition with an injury. He admitted that he has struggled at times this year while travelling from one bubble to another and called for more “attention” to be paid to cricketers’ mental health, while voicing his support for Chris Gayle’s recent decision to take a short break between the IPL and the start of the World Cup.”[Gayle’s] recharge was just like those iPhones,” Pollard said. “When the battery is low and struggling, you want to get some energy into you. In all seriousness, this bubble life is very, very difficult at times. Guys have moved straight from playing the home series, into CPL, then into IPL and into a World Cup. Sometimes you need a break as a cricketer and as an individual and I don’t think enough attention is being placed on mental health for sportsmen and us cricketers at this time with all this bubble [life].”I’m fighting. I’m trying to look beyond certain things. As an individual, sometimes it tends to get to you, not being able to be free, leaving one tournament and going straight into the next. It’s a bit difficult at times [but] we have a job at hand. We have something very, very important coming up in the next couple of weeks and it’s something that we as a team are looking forward to.”As the leader of the team, I try to gear myself and get myself in the best shape and the best order mentally, physically and emotionally, so I can lead to the best of my ability. I look forward to this World Cup. Obviously I haven’t played a World Cup in a long time, so I think that’s my motivating factor. To be able to come and represent the West Indies in a major tournament is something that I’m looking forward to, and hopefully we can put everything aside and turn out some very, very good performances.”

SLC in better control of financial situation – Lorgat

Sri Lanka Cricket special advisor and former ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat has said he is encouraged by the measures SLC have taken in the wake of a financial crisis

Sri Lanka Cricket special advisor and former ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat has said he is encouraged by the measures SLC have taken in the wake of a financial crisis, and believes the board has since “got a handle” on their financial situation. Lorgat is presently in the country conducting a wide-ranging review of the state of the game in Sri Lanka, and is expected to produce a report of his findings and recommendations later in the year.Lorgat said he had not yet pinned down areas of priority for his review, but suggested the SLC’s financial management would be given special attention. “I think it’s fair to say that the financial situation is something that needs to be looked at and is already being tackled by SLC,” he said. “I know for a fact because I was with the ICC at the time, that there were serious challenges with finances. But it’s good and it’s positive for me to say that at least there is a handle on it now and there’s progress being made. But there’s still a long way to go.”The SLC has been mired in debt approaching $70 million since the 2011 World Cup after constructing two new international cricket stadiums and ordering extensive renovations on a third. After struggling to make player payments over the last 18 months, the SLC has cut its number of contracted players from 100 to 60 as well as made layoffs elsewhere in order to trim spending.”Sri Lanka Cricket has taken up and understood what the issues are,” Lorgat said. “It’s working out its cashflows and its projections, its expenses, its revenue cycles and so on. It’s probably got a better management system for its finances now, from what I’ve seen.”The board ended eight months of delay in player payments after the state owned Bank of Ceylon released $5 million to the SLC in February. It has also had to lean on a $2.5 million disbursement from the ICC, to prepare for hosting the World Twenty20, which begins on September 18. Of that sum, $500,000 is string-free grant, $1 million an advance on ticket sales, and $1 million a loan which must be repaid in 2015.Lorgat commended the SLC for commissioning an examination of its finances, governance and structure, and said he would continue in the role until he can complete a thorough review.”In terms of length I will stay and do as much as is required to complete a piece of work. I wouldn’t want to be constrained by time. I have agreed to work until the end of October, but I will do whatever is necessary to complete the piece of work. “Research for Lorgat’s review began a week ago, and he said he is speaking to a variety of stakeholders in Sri Lanka in order to better understand the state of cricket in the country. “The section of people that I’m speaking to have come from the media, the national team, board members, ex-captains, staff, to get an idea of what happens within the office. There are people in club setups that I will speak to… everybody who will help me form a picture of Sri Lanka cricket.””I’ve been encouraged by the conversations I’ve already had. It’s quite positive, people have been forthcoming. That’s part of the value of being independent. People will share with you what they believe is good, what they believe is not good, what needs to be done and so on.”
