Kolkata Knight Riders set up a first qualifier match against table-toppers Delhi Daredevils as they took the No. 2 spot with a comfortable win over Pune Warriors. Like they had done against Mumbai Indians in their previous game, Knight Riders posted a decent total on a difficult pitch and their spinners choked the Warriors batsmen into a futile crawl. The home side ended a second disappointing season with their ninth consecutive defeat, an IPL record, and one that involved some questionable selections. On a slow and low pitch which Man-of-the-Match Shakib Al Hasan said reminded him of Bangladesh, Warriors gave only two overs to Ali Murtaza, the lone specialist spinner they played ahead of their two first-choice spinners, Murali Kartik and Rahul Sharma. While Shakib, the only batsman on either side to feel at home on the pitch, rode his luck to provide the boost Knight Riders’ stumbling innings needed, Warriors left out his Bangladesh team-mate Tamim Iqbal for the 16th and final time this season.Shakib’s onslaught and his 67-run stand with Brendon McCullum were crucial given Knight Riders did not have the luxury of a breezy start from the in-form Gautam Gambhir. McCullum, too, struggled to adapt his attacking game to the lack of pace but managed to keep the runs coming.Knight Riders reached 50 as late as the 12th over, when the innings shifted gears rapidly. From 49 for 2 after 11 overs, Knight Riders took 87 off the next nine, largely due to Shakib. It was McCullum, though, who began the onslaught, pulling and swinging Ashish Nehra for consecutive fours.Shakib could have been dismissed twice in the next over, bowled by Michael Clarke, instead Knight Riders looted 20 runs. Robin Uthappa failed to stump a charging Shakib, on 5, off the first ball and conceded four byes. Shakib charged again and lifted the second over deep midwicket for six. Off the fourth ball, a slog-sweep was put down by Parnell at deep square leg. The sixth disappeared over deep midwicket again. The first 50 of the innings had taken 68 deliveries; the next 50 took 19. At 101 for 2 after 15 overs, Knight Riders were eyeing 150, but Warriors hit back with the dismissals of McCullum and Shakib in the 17th and 18th overs. McCullum drilled Wayne Parnell to extra cover to depart for 41 off 43, while Shakib got a yorker from Bhuvneshwar Kumar to be bowled for 42 off 30. Yusuf Pathan got a couple of fours away as Knight Riders ended on a score that ensured their three spinners had the runs to squeeze Warriors. And that is what happened. Apart from Jesse Ryder, briefly, no Warriors batsman appeared comfortable against Knight Riders’ army of spinners and medium-pacers. Robin Uthappa did guide the first delivery of the chase to the third man boundary. That was to be the only four in the Warriors innings. Uthappa soon spooned a catch to cover off Iqbal Abdulla.Ryder skipped out to hit a couple of sixes and at one stage, Warriors were 51 for 1 in the eighth over. It was a matter of time though. Clarke, back from his wedding in Australia to play a lone inconsequential IPL game, ahead of Tamim, was stumped off a Yusuf wide for 13 off 18. In his next over, Yusuf, who has had a forgettable season, dislodged Ryder, bowled after a weak attempt at a sweep.Sourav Ganguly lasted eight deliveries before Shakib trapped him in front. A season that had started with three wins in four games soon ended in the ninth successive defeat for Warriors. Given their form, it is good for them that they ran out of games to play.Knight Riders now have two shots to try and get into the final. They will be playing Daredevils on this ground on Tuesday.

Dwayne Bravo suffers ankle injury

Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies allrounder, has picked up an ankle injury and will miss West Indies A’s two four-day matches against Bangladesh A this month

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Nov-2011Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies allrounder, has injured his ankle and will miss West Indies A’s two four-day matches against Bangladesh A this month. Bravo, who was named captain of the A side for the series, picked up the injury during the team’s warm-up session the day before the first four-day game, which is scheduled to start in Antigua on November 5, and has travelled back to Trinidad & Tobago. Veerasammy Permaul will take over the captaincy of the West Indies A team, while a replacement player has not yet been named.Bravo’s career has been blighted by injury in the past few years, since he suffered a serious ankle injury in 2008 which kept him out of the game for eight months. He suffered a big blow this year when his World Cup ended due to a knee injury he sustained in West Indies’ first game of the tournament. He returned for the home one-day series against Pakistan but asked for a break after the first two ODIs against India in June to work on his game.Since then Bravo has turned out for Chennai Super Kings in the Champions League T20 and for Trinidad & Tobago in the Regional Super50 tournament. The matches against Bangladesh A were to be his first first-class matches since the Tests in Sri Lanka last year but his return to the longer format has now been delayed further.

Sehwag likely to miss limited-overs leg

It is more than likely that Virender Sehwag has played his last innings on the England tour

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Aug-2011It is more than likely that Virender Sehwag has played his last innings on the England tour. It is understood that Sehwag has not completely recovered from the shoulder surgery he underwent immediately after the IPL in May. Sehwag, who struggled to make any impact in the two Tests matches he played, had a quiet word with the two on-tour national selectors – Narendra Hirwani and Surendra Bhave – and the team management, and the decision was then conveyed to the BCCI top brass. In the end Sehwag got the permission.”The shoulder injury has not completely healed. He will return after the Test series,” a BCCI source told ESPNcricinfo. In addition to the shoulder injury, Sehwag has also been suffering from hearing problems in his left ear, after being exposed to a loud sound on July 24, according to the note sent by the National Cricket Academy physiotherapist Nitin Patel to the tour physio Ashish Kaushik when the opener joined the squad for the tour match in Northampton. “Sehwag has some visual and balancing problems, which persist,” the source added.Interestingly, after the first day’s play at The Oval, Anirudh Chaudhary, Indian manager for the Test leg, categorically denied the rumours that Sehwag had asked the team management if he could head back home.It would be difficult to surmise if the injury played a role in Sehwag’s poor tour which began with a king pair at Edgbaston. He followed that up by lasting just five deliveries in the first innings of the final Test before being bowled through the gate by a Graeme Swann offbreak in the second innings. He made 41 runs in four innings.Embarrassingly for the BCCI, this is the second case of a half-fit Indian player being rushed in for this important tour. Earlier Zaheer Khan, India’s strike bowler, was ruled out of the series at the halfway stage, due to a “recurring hamstring injury and right-ankle impingement” according to the statement issued on August 7 by the team manager. Zaheer had originally picked up the ankle injury during the IPL and, both he and Sehwag had been rested for the subsequent Caribbean tour. When the selectors named the squad for the Test leg of the England tour in early July, they announced a 17-member party, stating that Sehwag would join the tour a fortnight later as he was been given extra time to recover completely from the shoulder surgery. Unfortunately for the BCCI, Sehwag did not recover as expected and someone would have to answer some tough questions.Meanwhile the selectors have not yet name Sehwag’s replacement and are likely to make the announcement early next week.

Pietersen out to silence detractors

Whether Kevin Pietersen’s Ashes form was a freakish deluge or the start of a new phase in his ceaselessly fascinating career is a question that looks set to dominate England’s early-season agenda

Andrew Miller in Cardiff24-May-2011Only three Tests have elapsed since Kevin Pietersen produced the highest score of his international career, an unanswerably dominant 227 against Australia in Adelaide that ended the longest run-drought of his career. Whether, however, that was a freakish deluge or the start of a new phase in his ceaselessly fascinating career is a question that looks set to dominate England’s early-season agenda.Pietersen was certainly talking the talk as he faced the press in Cardiff ahead of Thursday’s first Test. With a firm desire to look to the future, but an avoidable urge to hark back to the recent past, he reiterated his ambition in all three formats of the game, while at the same time taking a swipe at those in the media whom he believes are out to get him.In particular, he took umbrage at reports that surfaced during the World Cup that he was preparing to retire from one-day cricket. That story gathered momentum when Pietersen turned down Andy Flower’s invitation to “bite the bullet” after being diagnosed with a hernia, and instead flew home from the campaign to undergo surgery – via a night out in a notorious London nightclub. When asked if it was a mistake to be seen out on the town while his team-mates were struggling to avoid early elimination from the World Cup, Pietersen was defiant. “Not at all. I don’t see why I can’t spend some time with friends and family members I have not seen all winter. I was really, really down at the time and wherever I went, whatever I was going to do, it was going to make the papers. Would I do it again? Yes I would.””I was in ridiculous amounts of pain, trying hard to get through it game-by-game,” he said of his injury. “I was shocked [by Flower] because I knew the pain I was in, but it’s gone, I have dealt with all that kind of stuff. I don’t want to look back. Everyone tries to bring me back in press conferences but I just want to forget about stuff and continue looking forward. I am fit, very ready, and very raring to go. The bug is back.”But beyond the bravado, the doubts still linger. As England embark on the start of a new four-year cycle, with the stated aim of becoming the No. 1 nation in world cricket, Pietersen’s place in the pecking order has never seemed so precarious, not least because his mindset has never been harder to second-guess. He finished the 2010 home season on the sidelines after being dropped for the first time during the one-day series against Pakistan, while his scores for Surrey this year – 30 and 48 against Cambridge MCCU, and 58 (out of 506) against Essex – are hardly definitive proof of his renewed hunger. With England’s top three of Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott set in stone, and Ian Bell firmly embedded in the middle order, Pietersen is at best the fifth batsmen out of six on the current team-sheet. With Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara scrapping hard for that final berth, it could be that such pressure is what he needs to push on towards the greatness he still believes is within his grasp.”There is a lot of chat about all these pressures on players,” said Pietersen. “I think the strength in depth in English cricket is amazing and there are probably only a couple in the team who are not under pressure and that’s great.”But there are so many people who say I’m not loving it, that cricket’s not my thing anymore,” he added. “I love cricket, cricket is my everything. I’m 30 years of age right now, what would I do tomorrow if I didn’t have cricket? I have only achieved half of what I’ve achieved in the game. I want to get 10,000 Test runs, I’m only four or five hundreds away from having the most for an Englishman [22]. I’m not far from what I want to achieve in the game.”I just want a fair crack at it, because there’s a lot of people saying things about me that are not true. A lot of people writing things about me that are not true, saying I want other things. I’m 30 years of age, I want to play for another five years. I don’t want any more bouts of surgery, I want to get through doing what I want to do.”I had a bad couple of years. I went away last September to do some soul-searching and sort myself out and tick some ticks and work with people who really know me inside out, and a month later I got a double-hundred in Adelaide and averaged 60 in the Ashes and I’m back playing as well as I have ever played. I am happy where I am as a cricketer at the moment.”Whether England are happy with where he is, is another matter entirely. Six years ago, when Pietersen exploded into Test cricket with his starring role in the 2005 Ashes, he was driven by a furious desire to prove his doubters wrong, and silence all those who criticised his motives and questioned his switch of allegiance from South Africa. Now, the doubters are mounting once again, but for vastly different reasons. Nevertheless, he knows what he needs to do to secure the last word.

ODI series postponed due to bad weather

The one-day leg of West Indies’ tour of Sri Lanka has been postponed shortly before the first match was due to begin in rain-hit Hambantota on Thursday, Sri Lanka Cricket said

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Dec-2010

The rain did not relent in Hambantota•AFP

The confusion surrounding the one-day leg of West Indies’ tour of Sri Lanka has ended with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announcing that the five-match series has been postponed to late January 2011 because of the bad weather all across the island. The decision, made after an understanding was reached by the boards and the television partner, was announced shortly before the first ODI was scheduled to begin in rain-hit Hambantota. West Indies will fly home on Friday.”The weather in Sri Lanka has been most disappointing throughout the tour and a practical decision had to be taken in the best interest of cricket, the fans and the players,” WICB chief executive, Ernest Hilaire, said. “It made little sense to have the teams turn up for matches which they knew were not going to take place and this would have caused frustrations to fans and officials as well.”The weather is beyond any of our control and the WICB will now work with Sri Lanka Cricket to ensure that the matches are rescheduled to a time when the weather is more favourable for cricket.”There was no clarity over whether the ODI series would be postponed or not on the eve of the first ODI in Hambantota, where it had been raining incessantly. Reports had suggested that SLC and the West Indies board were working on rescheduling the series, but SLC denied this, while the West Indies team management would not officially comment on the development. Adding to the confusion was Chris Gayle’s Twitter update – the former West Indies captain tweeted as early as Wednesday afternoon that the series had been officially called off and that he was headed out of the country.Brian Thomas, SLC’s media manager, told ESPNcricinfo that the two boards were “looking at postponing the series yesterday [Wednesday].” He said the delay in the making the decision was because they decided to wait one more day to see if the weather would improve.Rain has been the only constant during this ill-timed tour, with the players spending most of the time during the drawn three-Test series in dressing rooms. The weather-induced stalemate pushed Sri Lanka from third to fifth in the ICC Test rankings, and Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, went on to describe the series as the worst of his life.

Spurs: Paratici plotting Torres swoop

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Pau Torres to north London in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Spanish publication La Razon (via Sport Witness), who claim that, despite the Villarreal centre-back having rejected a move to Spurs last summer, Fabio Paratici will once again launch an offensive for the 25-year-old at the end of the current campaign.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

The report goes on to state that, now the Spain international has fulfilled his dream of playing in the Champions League with his boyhood club, Unai Emery will agree to part with Torres in the summer transfer window – as long as an offer of around €60m (£50m) is submitted.

Paratici’s next De Ligt

Considering how impressive Torres has been for Villarreal this season, in addition to it being reported that Tottenham will prioritise the signing of a left-sided centre-back this summer, it is easy to see why Antonio Conte and Paratici would be interested in a move for the Spaniard ahead of 2022/23.

Indeed, over his 28 LaLiga appearances in the current campaign, the £58m-rated centre-back has been imperious in the heart of Emery’s defence, helping his side keep ten clean sheets, as well as making an average of 0.6 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 3.3 clearances and winning 4.1 duels – at a success rate of 65% – per game.

The £126k-per-week defender has also impressed in an attacking and creative capacity, scoring four goals and creating three big chances for his teammates, in addition to completing 55.2 passes, 4.5 long balls, 3.8 chipped passes, 0.9 dribbles and taking 0.7 shots per fixture.

These returns have seen the player who journalist Simon Collings dubbed “classy” and Javi Calleja labelled an “extraordinary talent” average a fantastic SofaScore match rating of 7.09, ranking him as Villarreal’s third-best player in the Spanish top flight.

The 25-year-old has been equally as impressive over his ten Champions League outings this season, helping his side keep three clean sheets, scoring one goal and creating two big chances, with these metrics seeing the left-footer average a SofaScore match rating of 7.08 – with the centre-back playing a crucial role in the Yellow Submarine’s run to the semi-finals of the competition.

As such, it is clear for all to see that Torres would make an exceptional addition to Conte’s current defensive options at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leading us to believe Paratici must do all he can to get a deal over the line for the Spaniard this summer – especially if he is available for a figure of around £50m.

And, with the managing director having been the man behind Juventus’ €75m (£67.8m) capture of Matthijs de Ligt back in 2019, Torres could very well prove to be the Italian’s next seismic centre-back signing.

Mills: Kane will leave Spurs if Conte goes

Harry Kane will be “desperate” to leave Tottenham if manager Antonio Conte departs the club, according to former England international Danny Mills in an interview for Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Conte’s comments

Spurs have endured an up-and-down spell of late, with results coming from all ends of the spectrum.

In the Lilywhites’ last six games in the Premier League, Conte’s side lost four times and won twice, including a 2-0 home loss to Wolves and a 4-0 victory at Leeds, illustrating the wildly fluctuating nature of their recent performances.

After Tottenham’s 1-0 loss to Burnley, the 52-year-old spoke to Sky Sports and claimed that the club will need to make an assessment over his future due to his team’s decline in recent weeks.

The Latest: Mills’ verdict on Kane’s future at Spurs

Following the disappointing defeat at Turf Moor, Danny Mills issued his verdict on Harry Kane’s situation at the north London club on Sunday.

Speaking with Football Insider, the ex-Man City defender said of the 28-year-old: “He did okay on Wednesday, but he wasn’t quite at the same level as against Man City.

“He didn’t look too much of a threat, and he wasn’t up against world-class defenders. The team needed to help him out and play a bit better as well, but even still – you expect a lot more from him.

“It’s going to come down to money with his future. But if Conte leaves, that’s it – he’ll be desperate to leave.

“He probably thought Conte was going to bring a massive improvement, but it hasn’t quite happened. The manager is starting to come out and say ‘I can’t do any more’.

“You just start to think – is it the manager that’s the problem? Or is it the players?”

The Verdict: Kane could leave Tottenham

As per reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham’s star striker and his manager have already formed a great relationship, with the England skipper hailing Conte as “one of the best managers in the world”.

Therefore, it would not seem unreasonable for the Italian’s potential exit to be the nail in the coffin for Kane in N17, with the 28-year-old already pushing for a move out of Hotspur Way last summer, with Pep Guardiola keen on luring him to the Etihad Stadium.

As The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported, Tottenham will not initiate contract talks with the striker due to the contract saga which took place last year. Instead, they will wait for the player to make the first move, but this could be a risky approach if Kane has his mind set on leaving the club.
