Newcastle must secure Navas transfer

Newcastle United have had an incredibly eventful season on and off the pitch in terms of the changes that have taken place in the dressing room and behind the scenes.

In terms of their results in the Premier League, after being in and around the relegation zone for a large period of time, Eddie Howe has now been able to take the Toon to ninth place in the league table.

One player that hasn’t contributed much to the side in recent weeks, however, is goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Having played in eight league games between September and November, the 31-year-old failed to keep even one clean sheet and ended up conceding 15 goals in total.

To highlight how disappointing the shot-stopper was during his spell in the team earlier this season, he was claimed to be looking “nervous” between the sticks by Alan Shearer during the Magpies’ 3-3 draw against Brentford.

With the upcoming summer transfer window on the horizon, it seems as though this could provide the manager with a chance to finally get rid of the Englishman and bring in a replacement to potentially compete with Martin Dubravka for the number one spot.

According to a report from Spain (via The Sun), Newcastle are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Praised for his “outstanding” performance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last season by journalist Ives Galarcep, the Costa Rica international has made a combined total of 266 appearances for Real Madrid and PSG across all competitions.

In those games, the 35-year-old has managed to keep a whopping 100 clean sheets, showing precisely why Mauricio Pochettino called him “top-level”.

This season has seen the £197k-per-week veteran play in 19 league fixtures for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and rack up the second-highest save percentage (79.5%) in the entire league, highlighting what a capable shot-stopper he is.

In comparison to Darlow, he has only been able to pick up a save percentage of 64.9% in the Premier League this season.

Even though he’s older than Darlow, he definitely has the quality to be a solid option for Newcastle ahead of the Englishman should he make the move to St. James’ Park this summer.

With all of this in mind, the Toon should definitely explore the possibility of securing a deal for Navas if the opportunity arises.

Luke Cundle: Wolves’ very own Phil Foden?

Robbie Keane and Joleon Lescott are perhaps the most notorious players to emerge from the Wolves Academy, with recent graduate Morgan Gibbs-White aiming to develop into a player of that esteem.

Though, the Old Gold have a new kid on the block, who has been compared to Manchester City and England star Phil Foden, by Wolverhampton Wanderers U23’s coach Jamie Collins.

Cundle’s recent performance for Wolves in their U23 match against Newcastle United left the head coach full of admiration for the 19-year-old:

“We took a little risk with the change of shape and the ‘false nine’ with no centre-forward.

“We played Luke (Cundle) up there, ‘Phil Foden-esque’, and I thought he played really well.”

The praise will be welcomed by Cundle, though he will surely be used to the plaudits after becoming one of Wolves’ most highly rated academy prospects of late.

The number 39 is a regular for Wolves’ Premier League 2 side but has made six appearances for the Old Gold first team with two of these appearances being Premier League starts against Spurs and Newcastle United respectively.

The Old Gold starlet had Bruno Lage waxing lyrical over his performance in the Premier League against Spurs in mid-February.

On Cundle, Lage said: “Maybe Luke [Cundle] can be a key man because it allows us to play with four midfielders.

“It was the way we play here and with the kid from the academy. He is just 19 and I am very happy with him. The most important thing is the confidence he gives to us. He was there against top players playing like he is in the playground.”

You cannot get much higher praise than that, which is why Wolves fans are eager to see more of their starlet, in what could turn out to be the West Midlands side’s greatest ever academy prospect.

West Ham: Ex drops fresh Zapata claim

West Ham United attempted to seal a last-minute deal to bring Duvan Zapata to the London Stadium during the closing stages of transfer deadline day.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, who revealed in a recent post on The West Ham Way that David Moyes launched a 19:00 bid for the Atalanta centre-forward, with the Hammers even believing that they had a deal tied up for the 30-year-old.

However, the Irons insider went on to state that the Serie A side then went quiet in the negotiations, which ultimately lead to the deal for the Columbia international falling through late on in the window.

In his post, Ex said: “We can confirm that the club started working on a deal for Duvan Zapata, a Colombian forward at Atalanta at 7 pm. They thought they had got the deal done. Then, apparently, Atalanta went quiet and the deal fell through. This has been given to us by one of our main sources after the window closed. It does make you question why we start working on deals so late.”

Fans will be fuming

With Moyes stating throughout the winter window that the signing of a new centre-forward was one of his primary targets, as well as the 58-year-old claiming that he had funds available to pursue his top January targets, the fact that West Ham will play the remainder of the Premier League season with only Michail Antonio as an option up top is sure to have left fans of the club fuming.

While the likes of Zapata and Darwin Nunez – who the Hammers were also reported to have made a €50m (£41.5m) deadline day offer for – would undoubtedly have made fantastic additions to the Scot’s attacking arsenal in East London, exactly why West Ham chose not to pursue their January targets until the final hours of the market is a question that Moyes must answer in the coming days.

Indeed, should the Irons have made a move for either of Zapata or Nunez even a week earlier, the Hammers transfer team would have had ample time to thrash out the finer details of a deal, while the selling team would also be much more inclined to sanction a departure as they would also have enough time in the transfer window to find a replacement for their outgoing player.

However, the Premier League side’s choice to leave all of their business until the final day of the window has now severely backfired, leaving the club extremely short of central attacking options ahead of the second half of the current campaign, something that will massively dent the Irons’ top-four hopes – for which, unfortunately, Moyes can have nobody but himself to blame.

Imran wants harsh punishment as deterrent

Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan has said he is concerned about the long-term repercussions the match-fixing crisis could have on the country’s cricketing establishment

Cricinfo staff30-Aug-2010Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan has said he is concerned about the long-term repercussions the match-fixing crisis could have on the country’s cricketing establishment but feels it is a chance for the authorities to act in a manner that would discourage future cricketers from considering such activities.”If they are proved, not just in terms of the best players in the team being implicated but from the public point of view, they would not understand the finer points of the game and each time they lose they will think it’s a fixed match,” Imran told Britain’s channel.”Why should Pakistan cricket suffer if some players have indulged in a crime? Why should Pakistani supporters suffer because of that? The people who are found guilty should be removed from the team and replaced and should be punished as an example for future generations to realise that crime does not pay.”Reactions to the issue have come in thick and fast, especially from former cricketers. Matthew Hayden, the former Australia opener, said it was “not in Australia’s DNA to accept any kind of skullduggery”, and felt the scandal highlighted the different cultures that exist in the game. “You have a look at Pakistan which has been wiped out by the recent floods and you put yourself in the position that maybe you can try and get what’s left of your family and salvage the situation,” Hayden told . “We wouldn’t ever dare get involved in corruption but that’s in our country.”Hayden’s one-time Australia team-mate Ian Healy, felt that players involved in fixing did not care enough for their country, and was pleased that they may have been caught in the act. “We’d be stupid to think this is new,” he said. “How long has this lurk been going on? It’s a long time I’m sure, but it’s been caught which is awesome,” said Healy, who also recalled a dodgy victory against Pakistan in the 90s which later came under the match-fixing scanner.”This game in Sri Lanka we thought we were heroes – we were high-fiving fools. It came out a year later that that game was brought into question,” Healy said.Healy, however, said that he felt Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal did not deliberately drop catches during the Sydney Test, which Mahzar Majeed, the man at the centre of the spot-fixing controversy, claimed was also fixed to . Healy said Akmal came to him for advice because he was struggling with his keeping.”He was stiff as a board and extremely tense. You couldn’t drop those on purpose they way he was doing it,” Healy told the . “His technique had gone off, which he told me about two weeks before – the ball wasn’t going into his glove that well for the spinners. I said to him, ‘look, we’ll work on that in Hobart’. I wasn’t going to the Sydney Test. And then he did that. It didn’t look to me as if they were on purpose at all.”Michael Hussey, the Australian batsman who was let off by Akmal in Sydney, also said he felt the mistakes were genuine. “It all happens in a split second,” he said. “Especially the catches off me … they were all up to the stumps. With those sort of catches they either go in or they don’t. I don’t think you can try to drop those.”Former ICC chief Malcolm Speed said there was a “fairly compelling case” for suspending Pakistan from the ICC. “It looks as though it is endemic that several of the team members are involved and have been for some time,” Speed told . “So perhaps they need a rest.”Speed echoed Healy’s views that the unearthing of the scandal was a step forward for the game. “[It’s] great that they’ve been caught in England where there is a very sophisticated legal system that deals with conspiracy and specifically with cheating in sport. So I see that as a major positive,” he said. “I would have liked it to have happened when I was involved with ICC but it didn’t happen at that time.”Ehsan Mani, a former ICC president, called for the PCB to act swiftly. “The allegations have painted Pakistan cricket in a bad light and we need to take swift action to clear the situation, but I don’t think there’s any fear that teams will boycott us [Pakistan],” Mani told AFP. “Lack of action or any cover up will damage Pakistan cricket badly. Match-fixing allegations have been hurting Pakistan cricket and the latest saga is a poor reflection on the board, which has failed to deal with the matter as they have failed to control the players.”

Glamorgan’s County Championship promotion charge gathered momentum as theybeat neighbours and arch-rivals Gloucestershire by 176 runs inside three days atCheltenham.Set a notional 345 to win, the home side were shot out for 168 in their secondinnings, undone by an inspired spell of swing bowling from England A star JamesHarris and a first-ever hat-trick from veteran spinner Robert Croft. The youngest player to be capped by the Welsh county, 20-year-old Harris rippedthrough Gloucestershire’s top order in a burst of 3 for 5 in 25 balls asGlamorgan accrued 20 points to move above Northamptonshire and into second placein Division Two behind Sussex.Gloucestershire must be sick of the sight of the Moriston-born bowler, whoclaimed 12 wickets in only his second first-class match to send the Englishneighbours tumbling to defeat in a match at Bristol in 2007. Croft erased the tail in one fell swoop, in the process becoming the first Glamorgan spinner to claim a hat-trick since Don Sheppard achieved the feat against Hampshire at Swansea in 1964. He finished with impressive figures of 4 for 20 in 6.3 overs. This defeat leaves Gloucestershire trailing behind in fourth place in the tableand still searching for their first Championship win at the Cheltenham Festivalsince Sussex were defeated at the College Ground in 2001. Upwardly-mobile Glamorgan were always in the ascendancy once wicketkeeper Mark Wallace had registered his ninth first-class century to propel the visitors to 371 in their second innings.Gloucestershire’s top-order batting has been their Achilles heel throughout theseason and so it proved on this occasion, a solid start evaporating in the spaceof 50 balls after lunch, during which time the home side lurched from 51 withoutloss to 60 for 5.Just as he did in the first innings, Will Porterfield played himself in,scoring a breezy 41, only to fall to a loose shot, the Irishman wafting outsideoff-stump and being caught at first slip via a thick edge to gift Harris abreakthrough.Having offered stubborn resistance in scratching 10 runs from 51 balls, JonBatty was put out of his misery by a Harris inswinger that clattered into hisstumps via an inside edge. Hamish Marshall departed in the next over, caught atthe wicket as Huw Waters got in on the act.Harris then trapped Gloucestershire captain Alex Gidman in his crease, whileWaters, breathing fire from the College Lawn end, swung one into James Franklin, who became the game’s 16th lbw victim. Glamorgan captain Jamie Dalrymple then turned to his spinners to press home his team’s advantage and England Under-19 left-hander Chris Dent succumbed to temptation, giving Croft the charge and being comprehensively stumped asGloucestershire slipped to 94 for 6.Waters returned after tea to have Jon Lewis held at second slip for 24 andCroft engineered a premature end to proceedings, removing Vikram Banerjee,Gemaal Hussain and Steve Kirby with consecutive deliveries from the College Lawnend.Earlier in the day Glamorgan had added a further 88 in 21 overs during themorning session to establish a lead of match-winning proportions. Having contributed an innings-reviving 72 on the first day, Wallace again proved a thorn in Gloucestershire sides, realising three figures from 116 balls, with 13 fours and a six. He eventually fell to the second new ball for 113 -to give the impressive Hussain figures of 3 for 60.

Celtic’s 3 best players against Rangers

Celtic ran riot against their Glasgow rivals on Wednesday night, with a 3-0 win at Parkhead taking them back to the top of the Premiership.

Ange Postecoglou’s side sealed the three points in the opening 45 minutes, with January signing Reo Hatate scoring twice before setting up Liel Abada for a third in front of an electric home crowd.

We’ve delved into the numbers from statistical website SofaScore to analyse the Hoops’ three best performers from those to have played at least 45 minutes of action. No prizes for guessing who one of them was, but who else stood out?

Reo Hatate – 8.8/10

Hatate is first up with an incredible match rating of 8.8/10. Alongside his three goal contributions, the 24-year-old also made 24 passes, including one key pass, and won four duels.

He contributed defensively in a three-man midfield too, making two tackles and one interception during his 73-minute display.

Greg Taylor – 8.1/10

Next up is left-back Taylor, who put in a solid display up against new Rangers loan signing Amad Diallo in the opening 45 minutes.

The Scot won 12 of his 14 duels, made a whopping eight successful tackles and also completed five interceptions.

Taylor also recorded three clearances and completed 25 of his 32 passes, ending with a match rating of 8.1/10.

Josip Juranovic – 7.7/10

The third and final inclusion is right-back Juranovic, who didn’t seem to put a foot wrong last night.

The Croatian won four duels and made three tackles, two interceptions and two clearances. He also completed 28 passes, including one key pass, ending with a score of 7.7/10 – the same as Abada.

Man Utd: Big claim made on Pogba’s future

Manchester United have been highly speculated to be fully involved in the January transfer window due to the arrival of interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, and after the side lost last night at home to Wolves, a fresh claim on Paul Pogba’s future at the club could be a consolation for fans.

What’s the word?

Sky Sports Journalist, Ben Ransom, has spoken this morning, giving some much-needed answers to questions on Pogba’s immediate future at Manchester United, giving his perspective on the situation and whether Manchester United could hold onto the midfielder until the end of the season.

Speaking on Sky Sports this morning, Ransom shared a twist to the tale, revealing that he is unlikely to leave over the winter. He said:

“Pogba I’m sure, Mino Raiola I’m sure will be plotting his future, but at the moment it’s too early for Ralf Rangnick to say what’s going to happen this month.

“Given the fact that we’re not expecting Pogba to rejoin full training for another couple of weeks – another couple of weeks for him to be match fit – you’d suggest that points to something being resolved in the summer instead.”

Fans will be buzzing

Pogba has had a rollercoaster of a time during his time at Old Trafford after making an epic return back in 2016 signing for a world record-breaking fee at the time of £89m.

The World Cup-winning Frenchman has had a total of 219 appearances, with an impressive 38 goals and 49 assists on his tally for the Manchester giants, winning two league cups and one Europa League with the club. Thus, fans will surely be delighted that any chance of him leaving this winter has been evaporated.

That said, the £290k-per-week star is still free to discuss pre-contract agreements with other clubs as his current deal ends in the summer, with a number of sides rumoured to be interested in signing the midfielder, including Real Madrid and PSG.

Pogba bagged seven assists in thirteen appearances for United before he was side-lined over a month ago due to injury and given their poor performances since, fans will surely be desperate for his creativity to be injected back into the team under Rangnick, who plays a 4-2-2-2 pressing formation built for creative play.

One fan tweeted after the Wolves game;

“How many more embarrassing performances do we need to have until you lot learn that we don’t know how to play footy without Pogba.”

Consequently, the news that his future will remain at Old Trafford for another few months will surely leave a host of supporters elated.

West Ham fans erupt over Nat Phillips claim

Taking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left buzzing amid a fresh transfer claim involving Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips.

Irons manager David Moyes, who has stated publicly his wish to strengthen in January, has been mainly tipped to target three main positions for the squad.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As per The Evening Standard, it is believed that the Scotsman would ideally like to add a striker, a new centre-half and England international Jesse Lingard to his roster as he seeks to reinforce his options.

West Ham have dropped points in their last three Premier League games, losing to both Wolves and Manchester City before failing to see out their home encounter with Brighton on Wednesday night in a 1-1 draw.

As January looms, it could be a chance for the Irons and new recruitment chief Rob Newman to gift Moyes a boost, with Football Insider now claiming that the groundwork is being laid for a move to sign Reds defender Phillips.

According to their sources, as also shared by The Sun, West Ham are lining up a move for the 24-year-old in mid-season, and it is believed that as little as £12m could seal a transfer.

West Ham fans buzzing…

Taking into account Phillips’ age, price tag and ability, it’s little wonder so many Hammers fans believe he is a ‘bargain’ waiting to happen.

According to WhoScored, the towering 6 foot 3 centre-back averaged more clearances per 90 (4.8) than any West Ham defender in the the Premier League over 2020/21. Furthermore, only midfielder Tomas Soucek (6.2) racked up more aerial duels among Moyes’ squad in that time than Phillips (5.6), highlighting the Reds defender’s colossal presence.

Still fairly young at 24, homegrown, seemingly adept at the top level and valued at just £12m, you can understand why many West Ham fans are buzzing as their club eye a “bargain” January move for the Liverpool centre-back.
