Pundit baffled by Conor Coady doubts amid Everton links

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer has knocked back suggestions that Everton target Conor Coady cannot play in a back four.

Coady has mainly played in a back three during his time at Wolves, with there being a narrative that the 28-year-old would struggle in a four-man defence.

He is currently being linked with a move to Everton and Football Insider claim a bid for him could be launched this summer.

The Toffees often lined up with a back four last season, so some may question this move, but Palmer finds the idea that a central defender can only play in one specific system baffling, an idea he refuses to accept.

“I don’t understand that,” the ex-Leeds United player said. “If you’re a defender, you’re a defender. You’re a central defender; you should be able to play in a three or a back four. I don’t get it.

“If you’re a midfield player, you’re a midfield player. If you’re a striker, you play as a striker. I don’t get it. Are you a defender or not?”

According to the same Football Insider report, it was Nuno Espirito Santo who initially suggested Coady when he was the leading candidate for the Everton job. However, Rafael Benitez has also given the green light to sign the England international in talks with the club.

Aston Villa must avoid selling Morgan Sanson

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith must avoid selling Morgan Sanson this summer as fresh transfer reports emerge over his potential exit.

What’s the story?

It’s been a rather frustrating first few months in English football for the January signing, making just nine appearances in the Premier League and that too only totalling 291 minutes worth of football.

Reports in recent days have suggested that Smith isn’t convinced by his midfield options, and that amid a potential move for Southampton and England star James Ward-Prowse, Villa are unimpressed by what Sanson has shown thus far.

And now, former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has said: “I don’t see why they wouldn’t sell him if he’s not producing. It’s only six months and sometimes you’ve got to give players a little bit more time. Not everyone settles well in this country.

“But if they are interested in a couple more midfielders then that could be a sign. There’s no shame in cutting your losses and moving on. People make mistakes. You’re never going to get every signing spot-on.”

Fans would be fuming

Speaking after his signing back in the January transfer window, Smith waxed lyrical about the kind of qualities the Frenchman could bring, saying: “He has got a big game mentality, he has played at the top of the French league for the last five years, played in the Champions League.

“He is a great technician and has great tactical awareness. He can play in a number of positions, can set up goals and can score goals. He has a bit of everything in his game so we’re really pleased with the acquisition.”
Dubbed as a “warrior” by himself, the £17m-rated Sanson showed his qualities as a really effective box-to-box presence in his time at Marseille.
Before his move to the Midlands, he averaged an impressive 1.8 tackles and 1.1 key passes per game in Ligue 1, both of which ranked him favourably compared to the rest of Villa’s squad. In fact, only two other players have averaged more tackles per match than him, while again, only three other have averaged more key passes too.
Given that he only arrived in January, and had his fair share of injury issues too, there’s no questioning that Villa fans and Smith have yet to see the best of Sanson.
It would be a ridiculous decision for the Midlands club to sell him so soon after his arrival, and without having first properly given him a chance to shine.
It would be an admittance that they got it completely wrong in the transfer market back in January, and would be a very hasty mistake. Villa fans would surely be fuming at the club cashing in this summer without giving the player a real chance to prove himself.

It would be an unforgivable disaster from the club to make such a decision so soon into Sanson’s Villa career.

Robinson can’t believe Spurs are eyeing Ramsdale

Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has been left baffled by an alleged transfer development at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Spurs on the keeper hunt?

Tottenham have been linked with moves for new goalkeepers recently amid question marks surrounding the future of current number one Hugo Lloris.

The France international has just one year remaining on his current deal in north London with there still being no sign of a new contract offer.

According to reports, Spurs have been weighing up the likes of Sam Johnstone and Nick Pope as possible transfer options over recent months.

The Latest: Robinson baffled by Spurs developement…

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson has been left baffled by the development that Spurs are now targeting Sheffield United shot stopper Aaron Ramsdale.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, as reported by the Daily Mail, Spurs are now eyeing a swoop for the 23-year-old alongside the likes of Wolves.

“I am hugely surprised to hear him linked with Spurs because he is not good enough,” he explained to FI.

“He got relegated with Bournemouth and he got relegated with Sheffield United and a while a lot of goals were not directly his fault, he could have effected them in some way. I don’t think he is at the level that others are.

“He has been pulled into the England squad now because Dean Henderson has had a hip injury. I think he’s very fortunate to be in the squad.

“If Spurs were looking to replace Hugo Lloris then Nick Pope and Sam Johnstone should be top of the list.”

The Verdict: Not worth the gamble…

Robinson makes a fair argument and we are in full agreement with him on this one, especially when it comes to Ramsdale’s reported price tag.

The Englishman finished last campaign in fine form despite Sheffield United’s relegation from the Premier League, with former interim boss Paul Heckingbottom calling him ‘excellent’ for his performances (Yorkshire Post).

Meanwhile, English top flight legend Alan Shearer lauded him as a ‘fearless’ young player (Premier League YouTube channel), but these plaudits do little to mitigate his sky high valuation.

Bramall Lane officials estimate he could cost up to £40 million this summer (The Star) and Spurs have much bigger priorities like the search for a star centre-half.

'All I want to do is to get out there and play for Somerset' – Johnson

The Somerset players were out on the grass at the County Ground today for the first time this season, and as an added bonus the sun shone for them

Richard Walsh02-Apr-2002The Somerset players were out on the grass at the County Ground today for the first time this season, and as an added bonus the sun shone for them. One of the players who was getting back into the swing of things in the outdoor nets was Richard Johnson who last year enjoyed a very successful season with the Cidermen after joining them from Middlesex the previous winter. At the end of the day Richard told me: “It made a very pleasant change to be out there on the grass. It’s always very different to be outside for the first time every season, but everyone enjoyed it.”On the back of his success for Somerset in the 2001 season, Richard was called up as a late replacement to join the England tour party to India before Christmas, but despite performing well in one of the early tour matches was not selected in any of the Test Matches, much to his disappointment. After returning to England just before Christmas, Richard spent some time at home before going out to Perth in Western Australia, where he worked hard at his fitness regime, but had a break from cricket.Looking ahead to the new season I asked Richard if he had any thoughts on playing for England at the moment. He told me: “I’m not really looking at that at all at the moment. What happened out in India is behind me and all I want to do is to get out there and play for Somerset. If all goes well and I take wickets then who knows what might happen.”?What did he think that Somerset might achieve in the coming season I asked. Richard told me: “I think that we can win one of the one day competitions. Look what I predicted last season and I was right! It will be tough again in the County Championship, because there are several good sides. If we work hard we will do well again, but we will definitely win one of the one day competitions this year.”Richard, along with all of the Somerset squad faces a very busy programme during the days ahead, which has been devised by coach Kevin Shine along with his assistant Mark Garaway, aimed at ensuring that the players are in peak condition ready for the first match of the season.

Aston Villa: Fans praise Matt Targett

Plenty of Aston Villa supporters have praised Matt Targett on social media for his performance against Crystal Palace on Sunday lunchtime.

Dean Smith made four changes from the side which drew 0-0 with Everton on Thursday evening, with Ahmed Elmohamady, Kourtney Hause, Jacob Ramsey and Ollie Watkins coming in for Matty Cash, Tyrone Mings, Ross Barkley and Keinan Davis respectively.

Targett kept up his record of starting in every league game this season, and his display at Selhurst Park impressed a number of Villa fans. The 25-year-old has missed just 15 minutes of top-flight action this season and was a part of a changed Villa defence alongside Elmohamady, Hause and Ezri Konsa.

The left-back was coming up against Palace winger Andros Townsend in the capital and completed a number of accurate long balls against Roy Hodgson’s side, posing a considerable threat with some neat deliveries.

Zero chance of Grealish joining Tottenham

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that he cannot imagine Jack Grealish leaving his old side for Tottenham.

The north London club could lose their star man Harry Kane in the summer and may need to undergo a rebuild.

Tottenham are known admirers of Grealish, having a bid of £25m turned down for the player a few years ago, and will have the funds to make another move for him, along with a striker, if they can get the £150m+ they are said to want for Kane.

Hendrie, however, believes the above is a non-starter given the current state Spurs are in.

Asked whether a Kane-less Tottenham reigniting their interest in Grealish as part of a rebuild could be a possibility, the ex-Villa player said to TT:

“If Kane left, why would he even contemplate going to a football club that’s selling their big players? Really and truly, you may as well stay where you are. I just think it’d be a no-brainer just to stay at the football club that he’s at.

“You’re taking big players out of the equation and possibly losing even more big players at your football club because you’re losing your prized asset, so definitely not for me.”

With Manchester City currently in the frame to sign Grealish when the transfer window opens, ultimately, it does look like Tottenham have missed their chance to bring the attacking midfielder to north London.

Fry claims Howe keeping options open

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Barry Fry, who is Director of Football at Peterborough United, claims that Eddie Howe will be keeping his options open before deciding whether or not to commit to the Celtic job.

Celtic are still on the hunt for Neil Lennon’s successor after he left the club by mutual consent with the Bhoys surrendering the league title to rivals Rangers earlier this season.

Last week Eddie Howe was reportedly set to be appointed as Celtic manager last week, however, Howe is now apparently having second thoughts with reports linking him to the potentially soon-to-be-vacant Crystal Palace job.

Speaking on how Eddie Howe is keeping his options open and why he won’t commit to Celtic just yet, Fry told FFC:

“He’s just keeping his options open at the minute and he’s not going to rush into anything.

“So, I can see Eddie waiting for an opportunity in the Premier League again.”

Heading into this season Celtic had a chance to make it a record 10 SPFL title in a row, however, they were blown away by Rangers’ dominance and consistency.

Howe has been out of a job since he left Bournemouth after failing to keep them in Premier League during the 2019/20 season.
