Warwickshire overwhelm Northants in comfortable 134-run win

Warwickshire 278 for 6 (Burgess 73, Rhodes 65, Lamb 65, Mousley 54) beat Northamptonshire 144 (Taylor 57*, Brookes 3-15) by 134 runsMichael Burgess, posting a one-day career-best of 73 for the second time in 15 days, and Will Rhodes, with 65, set up comfortable victory for Warwickshire over Northamptonshire by 134 runs in the Royal London Cup at Edgbaston. With rain reducing play to 46 overs a side, the home team, put in, were 11 for 2 after 19 balls but the pair’s stand of 133 paved the way for a late onslaught. Matt Lamb, belting 65, and the innovative Dan Mousley, with 54 from 44 balls, smashed all but two of the 104 ultimately hammered from the final eleven overs. Both men fell swinging in the last seven balls but a target of 279 at 6.07 an over always looked demanding. By the reply’s eighth over, it seemed formidable. As Ricardo Vasconcelos, the skipper and key batsman, edged behind, cutting at Jordan Bulpitt, Northants became 35 for 3.Bulpitt’s outswing to fellow left-handers also did for Saif Zaib and, with Manraj Johal also claiming two in his opening burst, the inexperienced new-ball partners, with only seven previous appearances between them, impressively covered for injuries to four senior seamers.Rout beckoned when Rhodes, the captain, brought himself on to strike with his thirteenth ball, Rob Keogh dangling his bat to give Burgess a third successive catch at the wicket. With five gone and seven an over now needed, the match was essentially decided an hour into the visitors’ response. To their credit, they refused to submit. But sadly, Charlie Thurston, pulling at Ethan Brookes, top-edged into his chin and had to retire on 21. Tom Taylor famously helped win a T20 game from the dead here last September but, though he reached an entertaining and unbeaten 57 from 65 balls, the four remaining wickets went at the other end in five overs, Thurston unable to resume.Earlier, in a deceptive start, Ed Pollock lost off stump to Jack White’s inswing from the second ball of the match without a run on the board and his inform opening partner Rob Yates was soon gone for 5. But Rhodes and Burgess followed 35 minutes of quiet reconnaissance by taking control on a pitch offering slow turn. This Keogh exploited when his off-spin found Rhodes’s leading edge for the bowler himself to hold a fine, diving catch to his right, and he had Burgess tamely lobbing to mid-wicket. Nobody could shackle Lamb and Mousley, however.

Ajaz Patel keen to pick Daniel Vettori's brain after a 'good night' with the ball

NZ left-arm spinner eager to learn how to adapt to different conditions

Deivarayan Muthu02-Sep-2021On Wednesday, Ajaz Patel stepped up as New Zealand’s lone specialist spinner in Dhaka, coming away with 1 for 7 – the second-most economical four-over effort for the side in T20Is . On Thursday, Patel revealed that he had a chat lined up with Daniel Vettori, who holds the New Zealand record for the most economical figures in four overs. In February 2010, Vettori claimed 3 for 6 against Bangladesh in Hamilton.Related

Latham on Bangladesh T20Is: 'Things won't be easy over here'

“It’s pretty cool. Obviously, two people that I look up to when it comes to spin bowling as a left-armer are Dan [Vettori] and Rangana [Herath],” Patel said. “Rangana [who is Bangladesh’s current spin-bowling consultant] was there yesterday and I had a brief chat with him and I’ve got a chat lined up with Dan today, talking about his experiences in Bangladesh and stuff like that. So, I’m looking forward to that as well.”Obviously, he [Vettori] has played a lot of cricket around the world and he knows as a left-armer what challenges he faced and what differences he came across as he travelled around the world. So, it’ll be nice to be able to pick his brain around and the differences he faced and challenges and how he kind of adapted to them. I’m hoping that that’ll give me a bit more of a head start coming to conditions like this.”In the T20I series opener, Patel took the new ball and struck in his second over, when he found delightful dip and turn to have Liton Das stumped for 1. Patel then consistently darted the ball into the Dhaka track and handcuffed the hosts with turn – or the lack thereof. He didn’t give up a single boundary and 17 of his 24 balls were dots. He was looking forward to more of the same for the rest of the series.”I think, on surfaces like that where you have that much assistance, sometimes it’s just about control,” Patel said. “It’s about being able to control your length and what you’re trying to do with the ball. Sometimes, the most dangerous balls are the ones that don’t turn. So, sometimes that can be a challenge as well. Yeah, last night was a good night for me, personally with the ball, and I’d like to maybe try and replicate that throughout the series. Hopefully, we can turn some results our way.”

“It’s about getting a clear idea of what we experienced yesterday and what our plans are going forward.”Ajaz Patel

New Zealand had simulated spin-friendly conditions at their winter camps in Lincoln and Mount Maunganui – before having five outdoor training sessions upon arrival in Dhaka – but Patel conceded that game-time is an entirely different thing. He hoped that New Zealand would learn from their irreparable collapse in the first game and adapt better for the second.”Obviously, we’ll take a lot of learnings from yesterday and you know it’s nice to get out there [in the middle],” Patel said. “Obviously, we’ve been training for a few days prior to that, but you never know what it’s going to be like until you get into the middle, so I think we’ll learn from that pretty quickly and adapt for the next one.”It’s about getting a clear idea of what we experienced yesterday and what our plans are going forward. So, it’s all about looking ahead and looking for the next one and see how we can build from yesterday.”The advantage of a short tour – New Zealand have been lined up to play five T20Is in ten days – is that their 60 all out can be swiftly consigned to history.”That’s the great thing. I guess in a condensed tour like this, you don’t have much time to dwell on the past,” Patel said. “You just keep looking forward and moving on.”

Liverpool man sold by Klopp for just £4.3m is currently outperforming Salah

Liverpool supporters will know that Arne Slot’s debut season in charge will likely be more of a success than Jurgen Klopp’s was, as their beloved now former boss had a lot on his plate when arriving to Anfield back in 2015.

In his first campaign as manager, the ex-Borussia Dortmund figure would achieve an eighth placed finish – which would be a disastrous position for Slot’s side to finish in by 2024’s standards – before slowly but surely bringing success to the Merseyside giants over a number of campaigns.

Unlike Slot, who has taken on the reins after Klopp’s exit with a strong squad already in place, the now unemployed 57-year-old had to get rid of some deadwood on his arrival, which included giving notable Reds dud Luis Alberto the boot initially on two separate loan deals, before letting him eventually head out the door permanently a year into his post.

Alberto would just never settle at Anfield, costing the Reds a fee of £6.8m in 2013, but is now completely forgotten about 11 years on.

Luis Alberto's time at Liverpool

The Spanish attacking midfielder, who has since carved out a successful career path for himself since his underwhelming stint in England, very much goes down as a dud from yesteryear when recounting his tough time playing for Liverpool.

The now 31-year-old would only ever make 12 appearances for the Reds in total before being sent packing under the early days of the Klopp regime, helping himself to just one assist too when donning his Liverpool colours back in 2013, when then manager Brendan Rodgers masterminded a 5-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

With zero goals under his belt, whilst also playing in the Premier League, Alberto’s time at Liverpool would undoubtably go down as a major flop, with the top-flight titans selling Alberto on for a loss at £4.3m to Lazio to bring his time at the club to an unsurprising end.

Luis Alberto's career since Liverpool

However, Alberto would find a new lease of life away from his subdued playing days at Liverpool out in Italy, with his current form for new employers Al-Duhail SC even bettering Mohamed Salah’s start to the Premier League this campaign.

As can be seen watching the clip above, Alberto looked a different player altogether lining up for Lazio over his quiet beginnings at Anfield, with sumptous strikes like this one versus Sampdoria commonplace throughout his time in Serie A.

The Spaniard would amass a mightily impressive 52 goals and 79 assists from 307 games in total for the Italian giants, before seeking out pastures new in Qatar, where he hasn’t slowed down with his output.

Looking at the table above, for his new Saudi employers, Alberto actually boasts one more goal contribution than his Egyptian counterpart this season so far, having actually helped himself to an astounding three assists in just one clash when Al-Duhail emphatically beat Al-Rayyan SC 4-0.

Of course, the difference in quality is there as Salah has managed to put together six goal contributions in the hustle and bustle of the Premier League Alberto couldn’t handle, but the 31-year-old has certainly not allowed his poor time with the Reds at the start of his career to negatively impact him moving forward.

Salah didn’t help his own cause by having a rare off-day against Nottingham Forest last time out, as Nuno Espirito Santo’s underdogs walked away from Anfield with a shock three points, but he will know he has plenty more in the tank for Slot’s men as the season goes on.

Alberto will just hope he can keep up his own blistering start, eager to make sure he sees out his playing days in style, after shirking off his label of being a Reds reject.

Liverpool star was worth £1m when Salah joined, now he's worth 5800% more

PSV now plotting along with Liverpool talent’s agent to drive price down

With Michael Edwards known for maximising the value of unwanted players in the transfer market, the Reds transfer chief could be beaten at his own game by the agent of a Liverpool talent.

Reds set for summer rebuild under Slot

The latest news out of Anfield surrounds the future of some of the clubs' out of favour stars. Whilst the summer window is still in its early days, the Reds have already been able to shift some deadwood with Thiago, Adrian and Joel Matip all leaving the club upon the expiration of their respective contracts.

Liverpool favourites to sign “world-class” £25m star who's like Rodri

The Anfield side have the advantage in the race for this high-class midfielder.

ByAngus Sinclair Jul 2, 2024

With a few hefty wage packets off the books, Edwards and Co look set to open the Reds' chequebook and bolster Arne Slot's squad. Anthony Gordon has been the main name doing the rounds on Merseyside with the former Everton winger linked with a move to Anfield.

The Boyhood Liverpool fan has been valued at £75 million by his current club Newcastle, after providing 21 goal contributions for the Magpies last term.

Newcastle player Anthony Gordon

With the funds to sign the likes of Gordon likely to be provided by further player sales, it now appears that one player's agent is set to make life difficult for the Reds this summer.

Liverpool talent set for exit this summer

As reported by Sport Witness, the local press in Eindhoven are claiming that PSV have identified Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg as a target for this summer. The report states that the club view the Reds centre back as the perfect replacement for André Ramalho, who is set to depart PSV during the window.

Van den Berg has been linked with a number of clubs so far this summer including Mainz 05, where the young defender spent last season on loan. Southampton were also said to be in for the 22-year-old, however this interest may have cooled following the arrival of Taylor Harwood-Bellis on a permanent deal.

Sepp van den Berg.

The report by Sport Witness claims that Liverpool want £15 million for the player, a fee that PSV are reportedly not willing to match. This dispute over a transfer fee is where the Dutch champions' links to van den Berg's agent come into play.

Last summer, Jerdy Schouten joined PSV from Serie A outfit Bologna in a move that saw Schouten's agent, Frank Schouten play a key role. Frank declared that Jerdy only wanted to sign for PSV despite interest from numerous clubs, forcing the selling club to bring their price down.

As Frank Schouten also represents van den Berg, the agent and PSV will try and repeat his trick this summer and force Liverpool to sell the young defender for a bargain price despite interest from across Europe.

Sepp van den Berg in action for Premier League club Liverpool.

With Edwards synonymous with making money off unwanted players in order to fund new signings, this move by van den Berg's agent will be sure to frustrate the Reds transfer guru.

Whilst the aim has always been for Liverpool to offload van den Berg this summer, it will not sit well with the higher ups at Anfield if the player's representatives engineer a move away for a cut-rate price.
