Tottenham Hotspur could be set to make an unnecessarily risky signing, to throw what has been a summer of intelligent spending into jeopardy.
Who are Tottenham Hotspur signing this summer?
With loan deals for Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski now made permanent, and Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Manor Solomon bolstering alternative positions to provide added depth, this has been a fruitful window thus far with which few fans could find issues with.
However, the persisting links with a swoop for Feyenoord striker Santiago Jimenez could provide a worry, given how unpredictable the Eredivisie exports have proven to be over the years. Especially considering the mouth-watering €40m (£35m) that is set to be offered, in an effort to tempt their top scorer from last campaign to depart.
For every Ruud van Nistelrooy there has been a Memphis Depay, and for every Luis Suarez a Davy Klaasen. However, when it comes to failed signings from the Netherlands, few stand out as much as Vincent Janssen.
Unfortunately for chairman Daniel Levy, this deal has all the hallmarks of a depressing replication of failures of the past.
How many goals did Santiago Jimenez score last season?
Whilst the Mexico international has enjoyed a true breakout year, the 20-year-old remains an unproven asset far from meriting such a lofty price tag.
Especially considering the similarities the move in question shares with Janssen's 2016 deal, who joined for £18.6m in a deal that is still remembered as one of the club's worst.
During a summer of transition, as they sought to take the next step from a third-placed Premier League finish, the Dutch marksman was seen as the answer to rival Harry Kane, propelling one another to greatness.
After all, he had just scored 27 Eredivisie goals, making it 32 in all competitions alongside a further seven assists. Despite this, he would fail miserably when faced with the challenges English football offered, notching only two league goals in his first season in north London.
He fared no better the year following either, failing during an injury-hit loan spell in Turkey before leaving permanently in 2019 for just £8m. He played just 42 times for the club and would score only six goals.
vincent-janssen
Now to compare that path with Jimenez, who too has enjoyed a stellar year as a youngster in the Netherlands, it would be expected that this cautionary tale would ward off Spurs of all clubs from making the same mistake.
He only managed 15 league goals for Feyenoord last term as they won the title, but across all competitions that rose to 28.
He remains fast, strong and lethal, with Dirk Kuyt even branding him "the best striker in the Eredivisie", supplementing the claims of Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, who suggested he was a: "complete forward."
However, Janssen too had earned a similar label when he first moved, with what followed nothing short of catastrophic. In fact, back in 2016, his national coach Danny Blind noted: "He just keeps adjusting to a higher level. I’m wondering where it ends, if this continues."
As Ange Postecoglou seeks to usher in a brighter future, the first thing he must avoid is walking into old pitfalls and potentially souring his relationship with the fans. Especially given how much credit they have given him after such a promising start to his reign.
Levy should certainly know better, and whilst the 22-year-old star might seem an attractive proposition now, the risk far outweighs the potential reward that Jimenez offers.
There are a number of reasons why Arsenal are back to their exhilarating best, but every one of those reasons points back to one man. And that’s Mikel Arteta. The former Manchester City assistant has transformed the Gunners. There were some initial doubts about his ability to take Arsenal back into the Premier League’s top four. Those doubts were understandable, however, given his inexperience and the number of miserable years fans at The Emirates had been forced to sit through.Even in the season prior to the last, as the North London side missed out on a Champions League place yet again, some may have been left wondering whether Arteta really was the man for the job.One year later on though, and it’s clear that Arsenal have arguably got themselves one of the most exciting young managers in Europe. The Spaniard expects nothing less than the high standards he sets for his players, too, as shown in recent training footage.
Mikel Arteta’s standards shown in recent training footage
As seen in a clip shared via Twitter, when warming up with club captain Martin Odegaard, they’re playing a little game, keeping the ball up in the air.
One of the club captain’s volleys falls just short of Arteta who, instead of reaching to try and save it, lets the imperfect pass hit the ground and then penalises the tiny error.
Odegaard laughs in joke disbelief but his manager simply retorts “This is Arsenal” emphasising the high standards he holds at the club.
The midfielder, in particular, has reached a new level under Arteta, leading by example for the rest of his teammates, who will be looking to make their mark in the Champions League next season.
In the last campaign, Odegaard had a year to remember, scoring 15 goals, and assisting a further eight in the Premier League. The fact is, the former Real Madrid man has quickly emerged as one of the best players in the Premier League.
What is Martin Odegaard’s market value?
Signed by Arsenal for a reported £30m, Odegaard has turned out to be quite the bargain. If the Gunners were to sell their star man now, which is extremely unlikely – so you can take a sigh of relief, Arsenal fans – they would potentially receive €90m (£76.83m), according to Transfermarkt.
At 24, that number is only likely to go up and up, too, given the sheer potential that Odegaard has, combined with the level that he is currently operating at.
Arsenal, in general, are on the up. Reportedly on the verge of welcoming Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber this summer, we may see Arteta’s side go one step further next season, and seal the ultimate glory of a Premier League title win.
Manchester City will have something to say about that, of course, following their sensational treble win last season. Meanwhile, Liverpool have fixed some of their midfield issues by welcoming both Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, so Jurgen Klopp’s side may well return to their dominant best come August.
One certainty is that Arteta is keen to ensure that the standards do not slip for one single second at Arsenal. He will want to make sure that last season was no fluke, but instead the start of a successful era in North London. They’re certainly due silverware, that’s for sure.

There was some criticism last year when the tournament launched without any TV coverage, given the success of the WBBL in Australia. Reasons ranged from the somewhat last-minute confirmation of the final details for the tournament, an already full television schedule and a perceived lack of faith in the product that would be on show. For 2017, however, there appears a much more joined-up effort to promote the tournament by making use of the NatWest Blast for double-header match days and the staging of the finals the day before the T20 Blast Finals Day to ensure it can be broadcast.Clare Connor, the ECB’s director of women’s cricket, said: “At the end of last summer I said that I was immensely proud of what the Kia Super League had achieved during its first season, but equally I stressed that there was still considerable growth potential for the competition.”Moving into year two I am therefore delighted to announce the next historic moment in the development of the domestic women’s game in this country, with six group stage matches plus finals day due to be televised live on Sky Sports, alongside enhanced levels of broadcast coverage throughout the competition on BBC radio.”In total, we will be taking the Kia Super League to 14 different venues during the season, which presents a fantastic platform to spread the game to new audiences across the country. Alongside the Women’s World Cup in June and July, we have a brilliant opportunity to showcase the sport this summer, grow our participation base and inspire more fans than ever before to watch and get involved with women’s cricket.”

Harshal, who had already taken two wickets overnight, added three more on the day, starting with Yashpal Singh’s wicket in the ninth over.In their second innings, Haryana openers Nitin Saini and Shubham Rohilla (47) put on a 103-run partnership that came at nearly five runs per over. Chelsea endured a dismal campaign and are mired in a 12th-placed finish, but that has not stopped the rumour mill linking the prestigious Premier League outfit with Real Madrid prodigy Vinicius Junior.
What's the latest on Vinicius Junior to Chelsea?
That's following reports from Spain late last month, who claim that the Blues – alongside Manchester United and Newcastle United – are interested in luring the Brazilian phenom away from the Spanish capital for a staggering €150m (£129m) fee.
The forward has been one of the central figures behind Real Madrid's success over recent years, and new Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino could craft one of football's greatest strike forces by clinching Vinicius.
Madrid signed the 22-year-old from Brazilian outfit Flamengo for £38m in 2018, when he was just 16, but he has dispelled any doubt over his calibre and the feasibility of paying such a sum for a youngster with an ascent to the forefront of the game over the past few seasons.
How good is Vinicius Junior?
Vinicius has steadily ascended to prominence among Europe's very best over the past few years, and over the past two terms has exuded confidence and swagger at a level to reflect his placement as a first-rate member of an illustrious Real Madrid outfit.
Last year, when Los Blancos won both LaLiga and the Champions League under the tutelage of Carlo Ancelotti, Vinicius plundered 22 goals and 20 assists; this season, with the Copa del Rey gleaned, the £348k-per-week star has scored 23 goals and supplied 21 assists from 55 games.
It is this level of breakneck brilliance that places him among the very best the game has to offer, with his manager hailing him as "the best in the world" after his outfit dumped Liverpool out of the Champions League this season.
Predominantly a left-winger, he could prove to be the heir to Eden Hazard's throne at Stamford Bridge, with the deft Belgian scoring 110 goals and providing 92 assists from 352 games for the Blues – notably winning two Premier League titles, two Europa Leagues and one FA Cup – before departing for Madrid for a staggering £130m in 2019.
Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior
The 21-cap Brazilian phenomenon could most certainly replicate Hazard's feats, ranking among the top 12% of attacking midfielders and wingers over the past year for rate of non-penalty goals, the top 9% for rate of assists, the top 10% for shot-creating actions, the top 1% progressive carries and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.
Back in the day, more specifically the 2018/19 campaign, Hazard also ranked highly in these metrics, sitting in the top 2% for rate of assists, and the best 1% for both shot-creating actions and progressive carries compared to positionally similar players in the Premier League.
Praised as the "catalyst" for his club by Daniel Sturridge, Vinicius is still comfortably outside the prime years of his career, and with a move to Chelsea, he could prove his worth on English shores and serve as the focal point for a new era in west London.
Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy will no doubt be focused on securing a new permanent manager with the Premier League season now at an end, although the Englishman will also likely need to consider the club's potential transfer dealings ahead of the summer window.
One area that may be in need of bolstering is the centre-forward ranks, with there still seemingly uncertainty as to whether talisman Harry Kane will be at the club next season, amid the 29-year-old's expiring contract.
While there is a chance that the England skipper may stay put with a year still left to run on his existing deal, the apparent interest from the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid could tempt the prolific marksman into sealing a move elsewhere.
Amid that speculation surrounding the club's leading scorer, Levy and co may well have already identified a potential striker target in the form of River Plate sensation, Lucas Beltran, with the north Londoners named by TNT Sports as one of the clubs who are showing an interest in the 22-year-old – who reportedly has a €25m (£22m) release clause.
Who is Lucas Beltran?
The promising youngster is an Argentine centre-forward who currently plies his trade in his homeland at Estadio Monumental, catching the eye with his stellar recent form which has seen him bag eight goals in just 21 games across all fronts this year.
Hailed as a "beast" by compatriot Juanjo Borrelli, Betran now boasts 14 goals and five assists in 64 games for his current club at senior level, after previously scoring six goals in 39 games while on loan at Colon last year.
Man City's Julian Alvarez
The hope for Levy and co will be that the 5 foot 9 dynamo can emulate the impact of his former teammate, Julian Alvarez, in English football, with the World Cup winner having left River to join Manchester City last summer.
That £14m signing of the 23-year-old has proven a real bargain as far as Pep Guardiola's side are concerned, with Alvarez having scored 17 goals during his debut season at the Etihad to date, including nine goals from just 13 league starts.
It bodes well then that Beltran has been likened to the City man in recent times, with experienced colleague Enzo Perez having said of the pair:
"They are similar. I don’t like to compare, I don’t want that backpack for Beltrán.
“Marcelo (Gallardo) waited for Julián and made him what he is today worldwide. If Lucas continues as he is, I have no doubt that he will continue to grow on his way."
Much like Alvarez – who has operated in an attacking midfield role or on the flanks this season – Beltran also appears to be able to offer more than just merely being a goalscorer, having created five big chances in 17 league games to date, while also averaging 1.4 key passes per game as a marker of his creative brilliance.
With Alvarez having proven an "excellent" signing for the Premier League champions, in the words of commentator Ian Darke, perhaps his fellow Argentine can follow in his footsteps and shine at N17.
Journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed that the stadium music was turned on immediately after the final whistle to drown out boos following Tottenham Hotspur’s recent loss.
What happened in Spurs vs Brentford?
In their final home Premier League game of the season, Spurs played host to Brentford but things did not go to plan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Indeed, despite taking the lead just eight minutes into the clash thanks to a wonderful freekick by Harry Kane, Ryan Mason’s men failed to pick up all three points.
They actually lead at half-time but Bryan Mbeumo netted an excellent brace before setting up Yoane Wissa to seal the game with a third in the 88th minute of the game – and this was all without star man Ivan Toney, who has been suspended after breaking FA betting rules.
No doubt, everyone involved at Tottenham would have been disappointed with the draw and it seems the home fans made their feelings known at full-time as jeers rained down from the stands.
Noticing this, it seems the club’s matchday staff tried to cover up the noise with a “shameless” act as they blasted the stadium music as quickly as possible.
Noting this on Twitter, Gold wrote: “The Spurs fans boo at the final whistle. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that stadium music turned on as quickly.”
He then later added: “Spurs have cranked the stadium music up to uncomfortably loud levels for this post-match lap of appreciation from the players to the remaining fans.”
Who won Spurs’ player of the season awards?
To make things worse, this was of course the club’s final game of the season being played at home and so the idea was for fans to stick around and show their love after the game.
Indeed, the TV screens inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium informed fans to wait around as the end-of-season awards would be happening soon.
Journalist Charlie Eccleshare summed up the mood, Tweeting: “Not now, mate”
When it came to the awards, it’s no surprise that Kane won all three Player of the Season awards from the fans, while Son Heung-min picked up the Goal of the Season accolade for his strike against Brighton.
While that might have been a nice moment for those players, they likely would have swapped the awards for three points against Brentford as Tottenham now sit just one point above the Bees and look at risk of ending the campaign without securing any form of European football.
