Liverpool: Reds could sign £14m-rated Robertson heir

Liverpool's summer transfer window has not quite gone off without a hitch, with a mass midfield exodus now compounded by murmurings of Saudi Arabian interest in the treasured Mohamed Salah.

Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo have been signed to restructure and revive the centre, but Jurgen Klopp's side still feels a little short in several departments.

While bolstering the left-back position might not be Liverpool's most pressing concern, it's certainly not out of the question for a bid to be lodged, with Juventus' rising star Andrea Cambiaso reportedly on the Reds' radar.

Are Liverpool signing Andrea Cambiaso?

That's according to Calciomercato, who claim that Liverpool – alongside Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur – are interested in signing the 23-year-old defender before the transfer window closes next Friday on September 1st.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

Intriguingly, Cambiaso can play both defensively and higher up the pitch, with his dynamism aligning with Klopp's affinity for flexible, multi-functional players.

The player is valued at £14m, as per Football Transfers.

How good is Andrea Cambiaso?

While Klopp's players are usually rigid in their role on the pitch, he leans towards these more 'dynamic' individuals to mould them to his own creation.

This can be said of Gini Wijnaldum, Roberto Firmino, James Milner; the list goes on, and Cambiaso, with his crisp passing, creativity and tenacity, might prove to be an astute purchase for the Anfield side.

Robertson remains the No. 1 in the left-back role, but the Scotland captain has not provided the usual air of imperiousness of late, and the Reds bosses appear to have one eye on securing an heir.

The 29-year-old has unquestionably been a bona fide revelation for the Merseyside outfit since signing from Hull City for £10m in 2017, making 269 appearances, posting 63 assists and playing a central role in the illustrious success of recent years.

Andrea Cambiaso

The 61-cap international, however, has been described as "poor" by writer James Nalton for his uncharacteristically subpar showings towards the back end of last season.

The £30k-per-week Cambiaso, while by no means the finished article, could prove to be the ultimate heir to a stalwart and beloved figure at Anfield, with the Italy U21 international impressing on loan at Bologna last year, making 32 league displays, providing three assists and being heralded as "on fire" by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his superlative showings.

He opened his seasonal account with aplomb this term, earning a Sofascore rating of 7.8 as the Old Lady dispatched Udinese 3-0 in Serie A, providing a sumptuous looping assist for Adrien Rabiot's goal, making two key passes, completing a remarkable 97% of his passes and winning two tackles.

Journalist Josh Bunting remarked on the "impressive" performance, and with such a rounded skill set, Cambiaso could well thrive as a first-rate full-back for years to come, ranking among the top 17% of positional peers across Europe for assists, the top 10% for pass completion, the top 23% for successful take-ons and the top 20% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

His natural penchant for eye-catching ball-playing and dynamism in his craft tantalises a successful career for the rising Italian star, and while Robertson is unlikely to be going anywhere just yet, Cambiaso is possibly the perfect solution to replace the distinguished Scotsman, when that time does come.

Brentford vs Tottenham: Head-to-head record, key stats & more

The new Premier League season is closing in once again, as a summer of drama, sagas and transfer warfare draws to a close. For all the strengthening the biggest division in world football has enjoyed, it simply cannot compare to the showcase that is the matches themselves.

Fans will be treated to a host of mouth-watering fixtures on this opening weekend, with Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to Brentford high up on that list.

Sky Sports clearly recognised this intrigue, registering the fixture as part of their Super Sunday double-header, kicking off at 2pm on 13th August.

With the Bees having enjoyed a meteoric rise to the pinnacle of the English game, their lack of history has not prevented them from happily mixing it with the big boys. This came to the forefront last season, as they finished just one point behind their opening-day opponents, even threatening a European finish at one stage.

Thomas Frank has earned his plaudits, but he will have a task on his hands keeping Ange Postecoglou’s new-look side quiet on the road.

The Australian will be hoping he can kickstart his revolution in west London, in what promises to be a thrilling battle with all-action football assured.

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur: Who has the better head-to-head record?

Unsurprisingly, it is the side who have enjoyed a far longer stint in the top flight who have dominated this fixture historically.

In fact, prior to their 2021 promotion, the two sides had only clashed in cup competitions since the 1940s, when they battled in the old Division Two.

With just one win for the Bees over the last 75 years, the hope will be that the brighter future being forged can lead to this gap being bridged over the next few years. Under the leadership of their progressive Danish manager, there is every reason to believe that will be the case.

  • Brentford wins: 7
  • Draws: 15
  • Tottenham wins: 24

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur: Who has more wins at the Gtech Community Arena/Griffin Park?

Having enjoyed a fine 96-year history as the home of Brentford, the Bees eventually saw fit to move on from Griffin Park and invest in the future, constructing their very own purpose-built home ready for their presence amongst England’s elite.

Despite the Gtech Community Stadium only holding just over 17,000, its modern look draws much intrigue, as it has spearheaded their promotion charge.

However, yet again, they are thwarted by their weaker history and have only won five times at home when welcoming the north London outfit.

  • Brentford wins: 5
  • Draws: 9
  • Tottenham Hotspur wins: 9

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur: Who has more wins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium/White Hart Lane?

The distance between these two sides within the footballing pyramid has also kept them apart in north London, too. However, their most recent clash at the new ground suggests the tide could be about to change.

After all, before Brentford’s win at the back end of last campaign, the Bees had never won at either of Spurs’ stadiums, having lost seven times.

With the plucky outfit seeking to disrupt England’s top clubs, there is every chance that this gap could be reduced significantly throughout the next decade of regular competition.

  • Tottenham wins: 15
  • Draws: 6
  • Brentford wins: 1

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur: Who has the better cup record?

Although Tottenham are often ridiculed for their avoidance of silverware, they do remain one of England’s most decorated clubs despite failing to win a major honour since 2008.

With eight FA Cups and two top-flight titles to their name, this is a trophy cabinet that many fans across the country would dream of.

Not least Brentford supporters, whose only three trophies are the titles of the fourth, third and second divisions. It is no surprise that they are often bested when the two are thrown together by the luck of the draw.

  • Brentford wins: 1
  • Draws: 2
  • Tottenham Hotspur wins: 7

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur: What were the last 5 meetings?

20th May 2023 – Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Brentford: Capping off what was a miserable season for Spurs, they would lose their final home game of the campaign in embarrassing fashion, as Brentford came from behind to win.

Whilst Harry Kane had handed the hosts the lead, a brace from Bryan Mbeumo stunned them before Yoane Wissa sealed their fate. This left the north London outfit needing results to go their way on the final game of the season to retain European football, which they would not.

26th December 2022 – Brentford 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur: In the first match since the conclusion of the 2022 World Cup, the Lilywhites battled back from 2-0 down to claim a well-earned point away from home.

Vitaly Janelt and Ivan Toney had the Bees on track for a famous victory before Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg both struck to level inside six minutes. The England captain nearly stole all three points as his late header crashed onto the bar, but in the end, the points were deservedly shared.

23rd April 2022 – Brentford 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur: As the visitors were searching to solidify their top-four credentials, the game was largely noteworthy for the return of Christian Eriksen to face his old club for the first time following his cardiac arrest.

Impressing in a bore draw, both sides battled for a winner, with the Dane's late set-piece finding Toney, only for him to strike the woodwork at the death. That was the closest either side came to a breakthrough, and left Spurs two points from fourth-placed rivals Arsenal.

2nd December 2021 – Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Brentford: Antonio Conte continued his unbeaten start to this league campaign, as his side cruised to a routine victory to keep them within just two points of a Champions League spot. Sergi Canos’ own goal handed the hosts the lead before the break, with Son Heung-min's close-range finish later securing the win.

5th January 2021 – Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Brentford: Spurs took a huge step towards what would have been their first trophy in 13 years as Jose Mourinho guided his side to the EFL Cup final with this win over Brentford.

Goals from Moussa Sissoko and Son separated the sides and sent the Lilywhites to Wembley, but Daniel Levy would dismiss their manager before playing that final. Ryan Mason then took charge on a temporary basis before Manchester City beat them 1-0 under the arch.

Who has played for Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur?

Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur 2013-2020; Brentford 2022): Quite comfortably the most famous player to have featured for both of these outfits, the 120-cap Denmark international has enjoyed a fine career, which reached its peak for Spurs as he became one of the Premier League’s top creators.

A devastating cardiac arrest threatened his future, but Brentford offered him a lifeline, which he would take with both hands. The 31-year-old proved he still had that class and quality, playing his way to a move to Manchester United last summer.

Alex Pritchard (Tottenham Hotspur 2011-2016; Brentford 2014-2015): Having come through the academy in north London, the creative attacking midfielder would only manage two appearances before eventually joining Norwich City.

However, during his attempts to emerge into the first team, he enjoyed a starring season on loan in Brentford as he posted 19 goal contributions to lead them to the Championship play-offs. The 30-year-old now features for Sunderland and has become something of a stalwart in the second tier.

Brian Statham (Tottenham Hotspur 1987-1992; Brentford 1992-1997): Another Spurs academy graduate that failed to make the grade, Statham was a right-back who enjoyed the bulk of his career at Griffin Park. He spent five and a half years with the club, overseeing a sole promotion from the third division.

John Bostock (Tottenham Hotspur 2008-2013; Brentford 2009-2010): Snagging John Bostock from Crystal Palace as a youngster, the powerful midfielder would make just four first-team appearances before venturing across the footballing world.

Again, similar to Pritchard, he would enjoy a loan stint at Griffin Park with limited success. The 31-year-old is likely most famous for his exploits with Notts County, given the added intrigue that their battle with Wrexham AFC for the Vanarama National League title brought to the division last term.

What is Brentford’s biggest victory over Tottenham Hotspur?

14th March 1908 – Brentford 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur: Within the Southern Football League – a competition featuring semi-professional clubs from East Anglia; the south and Midlands of England; and South Wales – it was the hosts who dominated Spurs despite finishing only 16th in the league.

The visitors were still elected to the Football League Second Division, having stumped up the cash for their spot. They replaced Stoke, whilst Bradford Park Avenue joined them.

What is Tottenham Hotspur’s biggest victory over Brentford?

26th March 1903 – Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Brentford: Years before their eventual promotion, the Lilywhites did enjoy a brief title fight before later accepting a fourth-place finish. Despite that, they still crushed Brentford during that successful campaign, who would finish rock-bottom after a 30-game season.

Fortunately for the Bees, they too would demolish their eventual opponents in the relegation test matches, beating Fulham 7-2 to retain their place at this level.

Key match stats

  • This will be just the 46th meeting between these two teams.
  • These two sides recently endured a lengthy gap before they faced each again other in a league match, stretching from 1949 to 2021. In total, there were 26,283 days between fixtures.
  • With six 0-0 draws between these sides in their history, and their lack of consistent clashes, a whopping 13% of their fixtures result in a scoreless match.

Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur: Classic meetings

20th May 2023: Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Brentford (Premier League): Although mentioned earlier, it cannot be understated how historic a victory this proved to be for Brentford. It marked their first win over Spurs since 1948, but not only that, it also resigned the Lilywhites to their first year without European football in over a decade.

Given Ivan Toney had been banned from football for eight months following his breach of FA betting rules, this also proved that the west London outfit could still compete without their main man.

7th October 1992: Brentford 2-4 Tottenham Hotspur (League Cup): In what was a relatively inconsequential match for both sides, the Lilywhites hammered their hosts in emphatic fashion.

Teddy Sheringham’s brace was flanked by strikes from Darren Anderton and Andy Turner, with the English marksman going on to claim the first division’s Golden Boot that season. They would beat Manchester City in the following stage, but crashed out in the fourth round to Nottingham Forest. Arsenal would win the competition.

Man Utd: Ten Hag Could Sign £22m "Monster" To Help Fernandes Surpass KDB

Manchester United seem to be edging closer towards another big signing, which could actually have the biggest impact on getting the best out of Erik ten Hag's squad…

Who are Manchester United signing this summer?

That's according to a report by Italian outlet La Repubblica, relayed by Fiorentina.it, who suggest that Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat already has an agreement in place with the Red Devils and is awaiting their official bid.

Due to such an advancement in personal terms, it is suggested that the Viola will accept a bid of around €25m (£22m), yet they are yet to receive one.

The Moroccan midfielder is holding out for the historic English outfit, and seemingly only has eyes for them following their progressing pursuit. An 'acceleration' is expected soon, given that they have now tied up a deal for Rasmus Hojlund and can focus all their efforts on a new target.

Such a deal would add to their earlier signings of Mason Mount and Andre Onana, on top of their new Danish frontman.

How good is Sofyan Amrabat?

To bring in such a controlling presence to marshall their engine room could have a revolutionary effect on the rest of the squad, as they would be able to exert their control over far more matches due to his qualities.

After all, the 26-year-old has starred for both club and country across the last 12 months, gaining far more fame with the latter.

Especially given he was a key figure in Morocco's historic run to the World Cup semi-finals, as the first African team to reach such a stage. Journalist Carlo Garganese would even suggest:

"Amrabat the best centre midfielder in the tournament. MONSTER".

Such a notion was bolstered by his 85% pass accuracy, 2.3 tackles and 1.4 clearances per game maintained throughout the competition, with his tough-tackling and relentless nature lauded, via Sofascore.

Of all the stars set to enjoy such an acquisition, Bruno Fernandes would arguably thank his manager more than most, seeing another steely midfielder welcomed to supplement his creativity.

Last season saw him excel with Casemiro just behind him, so to have both the legendary Brazilian and Amrabat would give him complete freedom to do as he pleases.

bruno-fernandes

The Portugal international is famed for his desperation to create, seldom looking backwards if an opportunity to forge a chance is there. As such, he posted 3.3 key passes per game last year in the Premier League, creating 32 big chances; the most of anyone in the division. This was on top of his 14-goal haul across all competitions.

Even Kevin De Bruyne could not match him creatively, forging just 31 big chances, and yet he finished the season with double (16) the assists of United's 28-year-old maestro (eight).

For some time a debate raged on regarding who was the better player of these two attacking midfielders, and yet the respective quality of their sides has seen the 32-year-old pull out in front after his recent treble success.

Should Fernandes be afforded even more license to roam and create, his outstanding figures are set to soar even higher, with a team having only been improved throughout this summer window.

Amrabat would be the hardworking foil to the former Sporting CP star's electric desperation to score, and his signing could add that extra layer of solidity and reliability behind him to truly make help him surpass City's legendary Belgian.

Crystal Palace: Hodgson in "good position" to secure "massive" signing

Crystal Palace are "in a really good position" to beat Chelsea to the signature of Flamengo's highly rated and highly sought-after youngster Matheus Franca, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Matheus Franca joining Crystal Palace this summer?

It hasn't been a great start to the summer window for Palace so far this year. They have made just one senior signing so far, and it was the rather uninspiring signing of Jefferson Lerma from Premier League rivals Bournemouth.

However, the departure of club legend Wilfried Zaha is the biggest problem for the South Londoners, as his performances over the last few seasons have been instrumental in keeping them in the league, and to see him leave for free is nothing short of a disaster.

That said, the club do appear to be making inroads with some potential transfers, one of those being for the highly-rated Brazilian youngster Franca.

Flamengo midfielder Matheus Franca.

According to Brazilian publication Tocedores, Palace co-owner John Textor has made an offer for the 19-year-old in the region of £26m, putting them in direct competition with cross-city rivals Chelsea for his signature.

The Blues have also made an opening bid for the exciting prospect after meeting with his representatives in London earlier this month, per Globo.

The fact that he has made just 28 senior top-flight appearances since making his debut in 2021 has done little to put people off, with football scout Jacek Kulig waxing lyrical about the youngster, saying:

"Great midfielder, great striker, he can play almost everywhere. One of the most exciting teenagers in Brazil at the moment."

What did Dean Jones say about Crystal Palace and Matheus Franca?

Jones was surprised by Palace's success in reaching this point of the transfer battle but was full of praise for them and didn't rule out the possibility of them securing his signature.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: "Yeah, it would be massive for them if they could actually win this battle. I mean, it's not easy to even get as far as they've got with it to be honest because he's a player that has been coveted by a lot of clubs.

"Getting to this moment and obviously Chelsea being the biggest of them and Chelsea don't normally miss out on targets like this. It has to be said that Palace have put themselves in a really good position to actually sign him."

Who else have Crystal Palace been linked to this summer?

While Franca would undoubtedly be an excellent signing for the future, it's unlikely that he'd make an immediate impact on the team and so, the South London side are likely to do some more business this summer before the transfer window slams shut on September 1st.

One of the players that the Eagles are interested in is Arsenal's American striker, Folarin Balogun. The 21-year-old is coming off a brilliant season in France, where he scored 21 goals for Ligue 1 side Stade Reims and achieved an average match rating of 6.9.

folarin-balogun-premier-league-west-ham-transfers

The club's interest in the young prodigy was revealed last month by Football Insider, an interest that was confirmed by Ryan Taylor earlier this month when he told GIVEMESPORT that Palace were still "looking at him."

The biggest hurdle for this deal is that Arsenal now want close to £50m for their young American, which would eclipse Palace's previous record transfer fee of £27m, which they paid Liverpool for Christian Benteke in 2016.

Perhaps Roy Hodgson's side could get some kind of discount should they include a buyback clause, as they are going to have to find a way to replace the goals lost from Zaha's departure.

Dhananjaya de Silva dropped for Zimbabwe Test

Limited-overs opener Danushka Gunathilaka made his first entry into Sri Lanka’s Test squad, thanks largely to his excellent ODI form over the past six weeks

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jul-2017

Dinesh Chandimal will lead the side for the first time in Tests, after Angelo Mathews resigned•AFP

Allrounder Dhananjaya de Silva has been dropped for Sri Lanka’s one-off Test against Zimbabwe, which begins in Colombo on Friday. Batsman Kusal Perera and fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep will miss the game with injuries, while fast bowlers Vishwa Fernando and Dushmantha Chameera return to the squad.Limited-overs opener Danushka Gunathilaka, meanwhile, made his first entry into a Test squad, thanks largely to his excellent ODI form over the past six weeks. Gunathilaka scored 323 runs at an average of 64.60 to top the run charts in the recent Zimbabwe series, and had also made 76 in Sri Lanka’s Champions Trophy victory over India, at the Oval.Angelo Mathews, who missed Sri Lanka’s previous Test series – against Bangladesh at home in March – due to a hamstring injury that kept him out for several months in the first half of the year, also returned to the squad. Having quit as captain in all formats on Tuesday, Mathews will not be leading in a Test for the first time since 2013. It will be Dinesh Chandimal’s first Test as captain.De Silva’s exclusion is surprising on two fronts. First, he had suggested he was a batsman of substantial promise when he top-scored in Sri Lanka’s triumphant series against Australia last year. Second, he has prospered against Zimbabwe in the recent past, making scores of 25, 64, 127 and 9 in four Test innings against them in October and November last year. De Silva was said to have suffered an ankle injury in the recent past, but is now fully fit and available for selection.Despite Pradeep’s absence, the return of Chameera adds an edge to the seam attack. Between him and Lahiru Kumara, Sri Lanka have, for the first time in years, two bowlers who can consistently clock 145kph on the speed gun. Suranga Lakmal is the sole experienced hand from among the quicks, with left-armer Vishwa Fernando having only played one Test as well. The spin attack, meanwhile, bore no surprises. Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera and Lakshan Sandakan made up the frontline contingent. Asela Gunaratne and Danushka Gunathilaka also provide slow-bowling options.Niroshan Dickwella is likeliest to take the gloves, with Chandimal now captaining the side. The one-off Test begins in Khettarama on Friday, and follows Sri Lanka’s 3-2 defeat to Zimbabwe in the ODI series.Squad Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Upul Tharanga, Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella, Dimuth Karunaratne, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Asela Gunaratne, Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera, Lakshan Sandakan, Vishwa Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Kumara

Derbyshire 26 short of first win for two years – then comes Nottingham rain

Derbyshire were 26 runs short of a first Championship win for two years – and in a derby to boot – and then the rain fell in Nottingham

Jon Culley at Trent Bridge05-Jun-2017
ScorecardDerbyshire’s long wait for a win in the Championship continues after they were denied victory over Division Two leaders Nottinghamshire in the most frustrating circumstances.Chasing 216 from 49 overs, they were within touching distance with 36 needed, six wickets in hand and still 14 overs left when darkening skies reached the point at which the light from the floodlights had taken over from the natural light, obliging the umpires to take the players off the field. They brought they back after a little under 20 minutes but the batsmen had faced only seven more deliveries – one of them a no-ball – when the forecast rain arrived and Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman was forced to accept a draw. He had lost one more batsman but the requirement had come down to 26 from eight overs, eminently within their grasp. It was an outcome he would have been happy with at the start of play on Friday but not at that moment, not as close as this to a first Championship victory since July 2015 – and a first win in red-ball cricket for Godleman as Derbyshire captain.Rain had washed out the whole morning session but the run chase was set up with no contrivances, Derbyshire bowling out their hosts for 349 after play began at 1.45pm.Chris Read’s unbeaten 74 gave Nottinghamshire’s bowlers something to defend and created an element of scoreboard pressure in taking the target beyond 200 but in the end the only real source of anxiety for Derbyshire was the weather. The forecast had suggested that the closer the clock moved towards six, the greater the likelihood of further rain and by 5.30 with 44 still to get the clouds were gathering ominously as the umpires began to twitch about the light.A couple of minutes later, the deepening grey of the sky forced them to act.Derbyshire’s disappointment was hardly made easier for knowing they had been on top almost throughout the four days, although at the same time it will be a source of encouragement for the way ahead.Nottinghamshire were not long losing their last four wickets from 313-6.Billy Godleman, Derbyshire’s captain, came close to breaking the winless run•Getty ImagesTom Taylor took three of them in the space of a dozen deliveries as Brett Hutton played round one to be bowled, Luke Wood hooked straight to long leg and Luke Fletcher was leg before to a straight one. Given that only the rabbit Harry Gurney remained, the 22-year-old right-arm seamer must have sensed a five-for was there for the taking but Jeevan Mendis denied him the opportunity as Gurney had a swing but hit the ball straight to point.Nonetheless, largely thanks to Read’s canniness in keeping Gurney away from the ball as much as possible, the Nottinghamshire lead swelled beyond 200, enough to put a little more psychological pressure on Derbyshire.Read’s 74 included 28 of the 36 runs added to the overnight score. He finished with a flourish, damaging Taylor’s figures a little by going four-four-six.Wayne Madsen was in charge two years ago when Derbyshire beat Northamptonshire by seven wickets at Wantage Road and it was he who put his side in with a chance of winning for the first time on this ground since 2002.They had lost Luis Reece and then Godleman in the first 10 overs of the 49, Reece failing to clear mid-on and Godleman caught behind after a nice piece of bowling from Luke Wood, who is turning into a blond version of Jack Brooks in the way he wheels away across the square to celebrate a wicket.Shiv Thakor gloved one through to Read but Madsen scored 61 from 57 balls to take his side so close to the winning line.He will probably reflect that he rather gave his wicket away in the end, aiming a big swing at Samit Patel when such rashness was unnecessary and slicing the ball high in the air to deep point, where Brett Hutton dived forward at full length to take the catch. But Alex Hughes and Gary Wilson picked up the pieces calmly enough. Hughes was leg before to a Fletcher full toss but there was enough batting left for the job to have been completed, had weather permitted. Instead, Derbyshire’s winless run extends to 27 matches.

When Will Arsenal Sign Declan Rice? Hammers Ace Set To Move

West Ham United's captain Declan Rice has been the talk of the transfer window so far, and with so many twists and turns surrounding his future, Football FanCast is here to keep you informed on all the latest updates.

What's the latest on Rice?

After two failed bids, Arsenal's third offer worth £105m has been accepted by the Hammers.

Talks will continue over the structure of the deal, but by all accounts, Mikel Arteta should have his man.

The Gunners have been working tirelessly to reach an agreement for Rice and have faced competition for his signature throughout. The highly sought-after midfielder was subject to a £90m bid from treble winners Manchester City, but that effort was knocked back.

The Citizens then withdrew from the race after deciding against matching Arsenal's colossal bid, which would've come as a relief to Arteta and the Gunners board.

Now, after a long drawn-out transfer saga, Rice is closing in on a move to the Premier League runners-up, but his medical won't take place until the structure of the payment is agreed with the Irons.

Who else was interested?

Apart from the aforementioned Arsenal and Manchester City, Manchester United had been touted as potential suitors.

According to Football Insider, the Red Devils were prepared to offer £45m plus two players – one of whom was believed to be captain Harry Maguire – for Rice.

But that deal never transpired and Erik ten Hag's side seem focused on landing Chelsea's Mason Mount.

Chelsea had registered their interest in the 43-cap England international but appeared more intent on trying to bring Moisés Caicedo to Stamford Bridge. The Guardian further added that the prospect of losing Mount had not helped their chances of signing his best friend.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were another club mooted as a potential destination for Rice but they withdrew their interest after the deal became more and more expensive.

Who did Rice want to join?

Rice's preferred destination always appeared to be Arsenal. The Guardian reported earlier this month that he would like to remain in London and be close to his family after becoming a father last year.

He had held talks with Pep Guardiola, and there was a feeling City could potentially hijack a deal, particularly after İlkay Gündoğan departure, but there was no indication to suggest his head had turned away from a move to the Gunners.

He admires Arteta's playing style and recognises he would be a regular starter at the Emirates.
