Not just Cunha: Wolves could have unearthed a £75m star in the making

Wolverhampton Wanderers fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Fulham on Tuesday night at Molineux.

The Old Gold conceded quick goals at the start of each half to sink them, with Ryan Sessengon and Rodrigo Muniz the goalscorers for the Cottagers.

It was a game that Vitor Pereira’s side arguably had opportunities to win. As per Sofascore, the West Midlands outfit had 18 shots to Fulham’s 11, and more possession, with 60%, showing their domination on the night. However, they did create fewer expected goals than the visitors, with 1.31xG as opposed to 1.69xG.

So, despite the defeat, and in such a frustrating manner, there were some positives for the Old Gold. One of those was the performance of Matheus Cunha, who continues to go from strength to strength.

Cunha’s importance to Wolves

It was not a classic showing from Cunha, one of the richest sources of goals and assists for Wolves. He was fantastic without the ball against Fulham, winning nine out of 14 duels, showing the value he can bring to the side apart from his goal involvements.

His record for the Old Gold is fantastic. In 84 appearances for the club so far, he has 30 goals and 13 assists, with his strikes being a key reason why the club has stayed in the Premier League.

In fact, the Brazilian needs just five more goals in the Premier League this season to finish as the player with the most goals in a single Premier League season in Wolves history. That would take him to 18, just pipping Raul Jimenez, the current leader with 17 goals in the 2019/20 season.

His importance to the Wolves side cannot be understated. Just going off their top goalscorers per season, he is one of their most influential players in recent years, whose goals have been vital for the club.

Cunha is crucial to Wolves’ side, as is one of his fellow Brazilian teammates, who also performed well against Fulham.

Wolves’ £75m star in the making

There is a real Brazilian influence at Molineux, which is exciting given the talent that the South American country produces. Aside from Cunha, they have the likes of Pedro Lima, a young right-back, and midfielder pair Andre and Joao Gomes.

Indeed, it was Gomes who stood out for Pereira’s side against the West Londoners. He scored their only goal, a fantastic finish into the roof of the net on the volley from about ten yards out. It was a wonderful strike.

Playing higher up than normal, almost as a number ten, Gomes had a creative influence in the final third. Charlie Haffenden, journalist for Birmingham World, gave the Brazilian an 8/10 for his performance, and praised him for the fact he ‘created one good opportunity for Cunha’.

It has certainly been an impressive season for the Old Gold number eight in general. He has played 28 times across all competitions, scoring four goals and grabbing two assists in that time. Gomes has been vital for Wolves in their battle for Premier League survival.

Indeed, he is statistically comparable to Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, according to FBref. The Reds’ star has been exceptional this season, described as “Liverpool’s best player” by former Anfield favourite Jamie Carragher during Manchester United’s trip to Merseyside in January.

Well, the pair are both similar on FBref in several key areas. For example, Mac Allister averages 6.18 progressive passes per game compared to 5.35 for Gomes. The Wolves man averages more tackles and interceptions per game than his Liverpool counterpart, with 4.22 to 4.14.

Mac Allister is valued incredibly highly by CIES Football Observatory. The 2022 World Cup winner is believed to be worth £75m, and given their similarity, Gomes could certainly be worth that amount in the future.

He is a crucial player for Wolves, who will be vital for the rest of the season and hope to continue the performances that might make him an incredibly valuable asset in the future.

'Soccer culture is alive' – Five friends, a renovated bus, and the U.S. Open Cup – touring America's oldest tournament

GOAL Convo: CLUBELEVEN’s co-founder discusses "Soccer Odyssey," traveling to watch U.S. Open Cup matches and spotlighting American soccer

The future of the U.S. Open Cup has been in doubt for years, with concerns about declining fan interest and limited broadcast exposure. But in the parking lot of a recent Louisville City FC cup match, North America's oldest soccer tournament felt very much alive, according to CLUBELEVEN co-founder Pablo Bayona Sapag.

“It was 2 p.m. on a Tuesday, and we're in a parking lot with a bunch of different fans, and they're all just having a drink of bourbon – at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday," Bayona Sapag told GOAL.

Bayona Sapag, along with his team of content creators, Kyros Morales, Tyler Dolph, Justin Amatucci, and his twin brother Gabriel, are all part of a team at CLUBELEVEN who are in the middle of a months-long journey titled the – and they're out to find what makes American soccer special. CLUBELEVEN is a creative soccer publication that produces print and digital content.

Traveling throughout each round of the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to different cities, communities, and clubs around the U.S., the is taking in small moments and painting them with a large-scale picture.

"Every state, every city, has its own culture, its own little thing," he said. "But then, when we talk about soccer, sometimes we all want to just paint things, you know, in one way, when in reality, it's… soccer here is such a beautiful mosaic, right?"

The group of five purchased a converted bus made for travel and living last November, and spent five months renovating it for what Bayona Sapag describes as a "prelude" to the "watershed moment" of the 2026 World Cup on American soil. The five of them, all content creators in their own way, working in the beautiful game, are part of this unique project where they're taking in the United States' oldest sporting tournament, while highlighting the small moments that make the world's game beautiful, on U.S. soil.

It began with the idea of a commercial.

From there, with the help of a stranger they met for an interview on a project, the concept of tangible, physical love for the game evolved into a magazine. Then? Well, then they bought a bus. And now? Now they're touring the Open Cup, driving around the country, delivering on what they intended to do from the start: sharing what makes American soccer, well, American.

It started in Asheville, North Carolina, and from there, they made their way to Boone, and then High Point to wrap the opening round. They then took the bus to the sunny skies of Florida, where they witnessed FC Naples – a small town with big ambitions – play their way into Round 3 of the competition. Round 3 saw them take things to the Midwest, where they witnessed USL Championship sides Indy Eleven and Louisville CITY FC take the pitch. Round 4, meanwhile, will see them return to Florida, where the Tampa Bay Rowdies will take on MLS side Orlando City.

"The Open Cup is important because it is an opportunity for people in all these different pockets around the country to fall in love with the game for the first time," Bayona Sapag said. "And I think on top of that, it's the oldest sports tournament that we have in America. Knowing that you're out watching an Open Cup game, you can think ‘wow, there were people 110 years ago doing the same thing that I'm doing right now,’ and I think that's very important to be able to know that you're part of this rich history."

Bayona Sapag discussed the journey and what they've learned from communities along the way in the latest GOAL Convo, a recurring Q&A with central figures in the American soccer scene.

    ON ESTABLISHING THE SOCCER ODYSSEY

GOAL: How did the Soccer Odyssey idea itself come about, where did it come from, and how did it come to fruition?

BAYONA SAPAG: There are three parts in terms of how everything came together. The first one was probably one that started last year around the Open Cup. With not every MLS team playing, we thought it was very important to try to cover this historic tournament. So a few of us went out on this little road trip. It was just with a car, no bus at that point. We went to three different cities, we went to two in North Carolina and then one in Tennessee, and we really got to see and experience all these communities… they were all very different, very vibrant. And we saw how much soccer meant to them, and how much the Open Cup meant to them, and that was a really special trip for all of us who were there. And then from there, it was just this whole idea of… even though we just went on this road trip for a week, wouldn't it be great if we were able to do this at a larger scale at some point? Obviously, that wasn't really a possibility, but it was kind of in the back of our minds like ’Yeah, this would be awesome to be able to do.’ So that’s where the idea really started, and then from there, well, we bought a bus.

We were talking one night about a Nike-style commercial that they would love to do. So we just thought… wouldn't it be great if it's like somebody just driving in a little car, and then there's this bus driving alongside them with soccer fans going crazy? That is kind of how the bus got in our heads. And then the final component of it, which was the magazine, I think for us, we've been doing soccer stories for the past seven years, at this point, doing interviews with players, fans, artists, anybody who was involved with soccer here in North America. And funny enough, we had an interview with a jersey collector over in Miami. He had a collection of 300 jerseys from all over. So we did that interview with him, and he kind of started checking out the work that we were doing, and he suggested wouldn't it be great if you guys actually put out a print magazine? That's when we kind of thought, like, yeah, it would be perfect to be able to combine all these three different things together.

  • CLUBELEVEN

    ON THE BUS

GOAL: How did you find the bus, and what was the renovation process like?

BAYONA SAPAG: So in terms of the bus, it was difficult. We went on Facebook marketplace, we went on all these websites to find people who remodelled buses before, so it was just getting a lot of information. Thankfully, there's a loophole. If the bus has already been converted into a mobile home, technically, you can just drive it with your regular license. So then, from there, we realized we should try to find a bus that has already been turned into a home. So we were able to find one that used to belong to a couple that they used to drive around the country. They were based out of Satellite Beach in Florida. We met them, we made the offer on the bus, and they were like ‘yeah, you guys can take it,’ and thankfully, from there, it was time to renovate. It had a shower, they had a bed, it was like their home, right? But from there, we began by scrapping the shower, scrapping the bed, scrapping everything until it was completely clear. We bought the bus in November, and then it wasn't ready until March. So it was a pretty long process in terms of remodeling aspects of things.

GOAL: What went into the interior design?

BAYONA SAPAG: In terms of what we wanted it to look on the inside, we wanted it to be pretty homey. When people step inside, the best way I would describe it is it's like a little soccer saloon. It's very rustic, but we have a lot of, like, different memorabilia from across the years. You know, we have game-worn jerseys from the NY Cosmos, from the 70s, the LA Aztecs, the San Jose Earthquakes, and then just different trinkets, again, from 80s, 90s, as well as early 2000s magazines from across time. So it's just like a lot of different things inside the bus that people can interact with. We also have a map where everybody who steps inside can put a little pin on where they're from.

    ON THE MAGAZINE

GOAL: Talk to me about the magazine. It's your physical story, and the embodiment of this journey. What went into the design and what does it mean to you all?

BAYONA SAPAG: Our first print magazine, it kind of covers everything that has to do with soccer in America right now, before the 2026 World Cup, and it paints a complete picture of everything that's happening across the country across all levels.

This whole idea of producing a magazine, we decided we were going to call it the Soccer Odyssey, which sparked a thought: maybe we should go on our own Soccer Odyssey. So, that's how we tied everything – the commercial that we did for the bus, and then going on this road trip around the country to kind of continue the storytelling that we did in the magazine.

ON THE MEANING OF AMERICAN SOCCER

GOAL: Across this journey throughout the Open Cup, what have you found out from fans about the meaning of the Open Cup?

BAYONA SAPAG: The Open Cup is really the only opportunity where you get to see all these clubs from all over the pyramid go up against each other, and that's the true nature of the sport! Where, you know, the little guy can go play the giant and go beat them. And at least in this road trip, we've seen how much that means to all these different communities. When we were in Boone at Appalachian FC, we were talking to one of the owners, and he told us it can fund the club for the rest of the year.

You see how much these games mean to a community, monetarily, but then also, just as a community event, you see people coming out that maybe have never seen a soccer game before, but they're there just because they know the rest of their town is going to be there watching the game. So I think when it comes to that, the Open Cup is important because it is an opportunity for people in all these different pockets around the country to fall in love with the game for the first time. And I think on top of that, it's the oldest, oldest sports tournament that we have in America…I think it's important for the culture of the game here in America.

GOAL: American soccer is peculiar, with quirks of its own. What has this journey showed you personally about the domestic game?

CLUBELEVEN: American soccer, it's always about the untold stories of the game, the hidden things. So that's why I think it's important to shine a light on these Open Cup games. It's because of all these things that maybe we all wish were happening in our country are actually happening. They're there. It's just being able to give a spotlight to them and showcase it at a national level. I think that's very important. Because, you know, I know for a lot of us fans here in America, we look to Europe, we look to South America, and we see all these great things happening. But we do have that here in America, it's just…now shining a spotlight on them.

Amorim, who is still striving to steady the ship at United, was spotted with his arm around Cunha after his team's 1-0 loss to Wolves – a moment that has triggered debate over whether his approach was simply a cordial post-match interaction or something more strategic as the Manchester club prepare for a key summer of squad restructuring.

Pablo Sarabia netted a second-half goal that secured the victory for Wolves and drew them level with the Red Devils on 38 points in the Premier League table. However, what took place in the stadium tunnel afterwards drew almost as much attention as the result.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Cunha has been heavily linked with a summer move away from Wolves after impressing throughout the season. While both Chelsea and Arsenal are reportedly monitoring the situation, a recent report from revealed that Cunha has already held favourable discussions with United. Talks have reportedly gone well, with United now believed to be in pole position to land the former Atletico Madrid striker for a fee believed to be around £62.5 million ($84 million).

  • WHAT PETIT SAID

Former Chelsea and Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has suggested that Amorim’s actions weren’t coincidental, implying that the manager was making his pitch in real-time for the Brazilian’s services.

In an interview with he saidAmorim was speaking to Matheus Cunha and putting some pressure on him. I think we all understand what he was doing because Amorim is looking for players with character. Cunha has shown he has that with Wolves, he has been their best player and probably saved them from relegation, he would be a great addition for Manchester United and looks to already have that link to Amorim."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

If Cunha does make the move to Old Trafford, it could signal a reshuffle in Manchester United’s attacking setup. Petit suggested the Brazilian could even slot into a role ahead of Bruno Fernandes, offering fresh energy and a different dynamic in the final third.

"He would play ahead of Bruno Fernandes and form a connection," the former Arsenal man said. "In the meantime, United need to work hard to end the season strong and maybe try to sell some players as well as bringing some in."

Nuno already has Nottingham Forest’s answer to Cunha in £60m "magician"

Champions League qualification is currently in the hands of Nottingham Forest. They are not on the cusp yet but are in an excellent position with over half of the season complete. The men in Garibaldi Red are third in the Premier League with 44 points, with six points the gap between them and Newcastle United in fifth place.

There have been some exceptional performances from Nuno Espirito Santo’s men this season. Perhaps their best player has been striker Chris Wood, who has 14 goals in 22 Premier League appearances so far this term.

Now, with the January transfer window in full flow, the East Midlands club are targeting attacking reinforcements and could make a shock move for Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha.

Nottingham Forest’s shock Cunha move

If Forest were able to secure the services of Cunha, it would be a surprising deal indeed. According to a report from the Mail, they have the Brazilian ‘at the top of their January shopping list’ and could try and sign him despite interest from other Premier League sides.

Matheus Cunha

It has been another fantastic season for Cunha, as Wolves struggle in the Premier League and are in a fight to save their top-flight status. He has ten goals and four assists in 21 games for the Old Gold this term.

Perhaps’ Cunha’s best game in the 2024/25 campaign came against Fulham in a shock 4-1 win for Wolves at Craven Cottage. He scored twice and grabbed an assist as the West Midlands club got a crucial three points in London.

There is no doubt that this would be a brilliant coup for Forest. Not only would they be signing a proven Premier League star, but they would be bringing in a player from a Midlands rival.

However, there is an argument to suggest they don’t need to make this transfer, with someone at the club already being their own version of Cunha.

Nottingham Forest's very own Matheus Cunha

The player in question here is Forest number 10 Morgan Gibbs-White. The England international also made the move to the City Ground from Molineux, for a hefty fee of £42.5m including add-ons.

Morgan Gibbs-White for Nottingham Forest.

It is fair to say that there is no love lost between Gibbs-White and the Wolves fans. They made their feelings known during the most recent clash between the sides at Molineux, which Forest won 3-0. Gibbs-White opened the scoring, and his celebration in front of the Wolves fans said it all, putting his fingers in his ears.

During his time at the City Ground, the England international has really impressed. He has 15 goals and 22 assists in 98 games and has previously been described as a “magician” by football statistician Statman Dave. This term, he has eight goals and assists in the Premier League.

Typically, Gibbs-White has played in behind the striker, Wood, and has formed an exceptional partnership with the New Zealander. They have combined for six goals in 58 games together, in what has proven to be a really fruitful partnership.

This does beg the question of whether Forest need Cunha. It seems unlikely that the Gibbs-White and Wood partnership will be broken, so it is not necessarily obvious where he will fit in.

The statistics via Squawka also show that the Forest man and the Brazilian are not really too dissimilar. For example, Gibbs-White averages 0.6 goals and assists per 90 minutes compared to 0.9 for Cunha, and plays 12.7 forward passes as opposed to Cunha’s 9.3 each game.

Forest’s number 10 was valued at £60m as recently as May 2024, showing his importance to Nuno’s side. There is certainly a question as to if they need to sign Cunha based on that, or do the men in Garibaldi Red actually have their answer to the Wolves star, in Gibbs-White.

0 games in 24/25: Howe can ease Wilson blow by unleashing Newcastle teen

Newcastle United aren’t in crisis, but some gaping holes need filling in at St. James’ Park. The recent Premier League defeat at the Gtech has left Eddie Howe’s squad mired in 12th place, with just one win in five.

While there’s no inclination that Howe’s position is under threat, it’s pretty clear that things need to change if Newcastle are to complete the campaign and view it as one of success and progress.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

There’s an alarming lack of intensity, energy and positivity about this Magpies team, who have overcome the injury struggles of 2023/24 but are now suffering from a poor summer transfer window and the ramifications of PSR, spilling into the first-team squad.

That’s not to say that injuries have been totally wiped from the Tyneside slate, with Callum Wilson enduring a torrid season that has just been dealt another bruising blow.

Callum Wilson's latest injury

Wilson has featured across Newcastle’s past four Premier League fixtures, but only after sitting on the sidelines for the entirety of the opening phase of the campaign.

Callum Wilson in the Newcastle stands

Given that United have struggled for goals and fluency in attacking sequences, it’s clear that this has been to Howe’s detriment, for Wilson is always clinical, always dangerous, and has that ball-striking knack that would surely have provided the team with something more.

But he’s been out of action and now appears to be set for several months back in the medical room after picking up a hamstring injury – something that will keep him out indefinitely and is a recurrence of two similar problems from last season. It’s saddening to see, especially as the back injury that has ruled him out over recent months is a completely separate thing.

The January transfer window can’t come soon enough, but Howe will need to balance Alexander Isak’s workload and somehow maintain the potency of the Magpies attack.

The players who could replace Callum Wilson

Newcastle fans will rest assured in the fact that Isak is their prized forward, but the Swede has suffered from injury issues throughout his Premier League career and must not be freighted with too heavy a burden.

Luckily, Anthony Gordon can stand in at number nine when needed. He’s not a natural striker, to be sure, but offers dynamic qualities and can work in flux with left winger Harvey Barnes.

Miguel Almiron could also be considered as a stand-in forward, serving as Isak’s understudy, at least. However, the Paraguayan is on the margins as it is and has scored just one goal over 15 career appearances in a central striking role, which is rather typical.

Miguel Almiron

There’s also William Osula to consider. The French forward, 21, left Sheffield United to sign for the Toon in a £15m transfer last summer but has only featured four times in the Premier League, yet to start and yet to score across his total of ten minutes.

However, the fact that Osula has been involved in first-team action for the entirety of the campaign yet has scarcely featured on the Premier League pitch suggests that he is still not ready for the kind of role that Howe is looking for.

Of course, the latest blow only heightens the expectation that PIF will green-light some January spending to propel United back into the ascendency.

But in the interim, and perhaps into the latter phase of the term, Howe must consider unleashing academy talent Ben Parkinson.

Howe could boldly unleash Ben Parkinson

Parkinson, aged 19, has been a prominent figure in Newcastle’s academy system over the past several years and has been among the most influential U21s this season with six goals and an assist across 12 appearances.

Newcastle youngster Ben Parkinson

A dynamic attacking talent, Parkinson is capable of playing across the attacking span and has demonstrated a level of potency throughout – though, given that he is left-footed and focuses on goalscoring, he’s least effective on the left wing.

His talents have seen him rewarded with a senior debut, coming off the bench during a 2-0 Newcastle defeat against Bournemouth in the Premier League last season, though he has since continued his development in the academy zone, albeit spending a host of senior matches on the bench last year – including twice in the Champions League.

It’s curious to note that Parkinson has matched his numbers with the U18s as a U21 star, bespeaking growth and development that can often be the inverse for young hopefuls, bloated with numerical success in their maiden stage before fizzling out as they rise higher and higher.

With his 20th birthday only three months away, you’d think that Parkinson is reaching the stage when he would be a regular presence in the matchday squad, especially given Newcastle’s lack of options at centre-forward and indeed on the right flank, with Almiron and Jacob Murphy leaving plenty to be desired.

He’s a team player, adept in contributing toward flowing transitions (that are a staple of Howe’s system) and he’s been praised for his natural striking sense, with U21 coach Ben Dawson saying: “He’s always had that knack of being in the right place at the right time.”

Howe clearly entrusted Parkinson with a bit-part role in the senior squad last year, and now it’s time for the teenage talent to prove that he can step up to the plate as Isak’s understudy, and mollify the fanbase’s concern that Wilson’s fresh injury could be a devastating blow to a campaign that still hasn’t got going.
