SRH bank on home advantage against deflated Titans

GT, who are out of contention for the playoffs, might use this game to give opportunities to some of their fringe players

Match detailsSunrisers Hyderabad vs Gujarat Titans
Hyderabad, 7.30pm IST (2pm GMT)
Big picture: All eyes on Travishek once againIn the heated race for the playoffs in which five teams – CSK, SRH, DC, RCB and LSG – are still fighting it out for the remaining two spots, SRH are probably best placed to book a berth. One because they are the only team out of those five with two games in hand, and two, they will play both games in their own den. There’s also a third: the two remaining opponents for SRH are two of the bottom three teams on the points table – Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings – which tilts the odds further in favour of SRH.The first of those will be GT, who were knocked out of the playoffs race after a washout in Ahmedabad, where the captains waited for the duration of an entire T20 game to finally share points.SRH will return to the field after a good eight days, having smashed LSG by chasing down 166 even before the halfway mark. They will be high on confidence and spirits, re-energised after a break, and will hope GT haven’t saved their best for their last league game.A lot of the contrast between SRH and GT this season is shown by how they have gone about hitting their sixes so far. Compared to the 146 sixes by SRH this IPL, the most, GT rank at the bottom, with just 67, which is just one more than how many Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma have slammed put together. The story is similar across the three phases of the game, and it will come down to how much GT can restrict the SRH top order to in the powerplay.Form guideSunrisers Hyderabad WLWLL (last five matches, most recent first)

Previous meetingIt was a month and a half ago when the tournament was only a week old that GT had restricted SRH to just 162 in Ahmedabad and chased it down rather easily, thanks to their top four. SRH’s batters have pretty much changed the definition of T20 batting since then.Team news and Impact Player strategySunrisers Hyderabad
Barring a collapse of sorts, like against Mumbai Indians when they had to bring in another batter in place of Abhishek Sharma, SRH are likely to swap a frontline batter for a bowler such as T Natarajan, Umran Malik or Jaydev Unadkat.Probable XII: 1 , 2 Travis Head, 3 Mayank Agarwal, 4 Nitish Kumar Reddy, 5 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6 Marco Jansen/Glenn Phillips, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Shahbaz Ahmed, 9 Pat Cummins (capt), 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 T Natarajan, 12 Gujarat Titans
GT have tried the most players (23) this season while trying to find their best combination and ended their campaign without possibly getting there. This could be a chance for them to give some of less-tried players more chances, such as Gurnoor Brar, Manav Suthar and BR Sharath.Likely XII: 1 Shubman Gill (capt), 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 , 4 M Shahrukh Khan, 5 David Miller, 6 Vijay Shankar, 7 Rahul Tewatia, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Mohit Sharma, 10 Noor Ahmad, 11 Josh Little/Azmatullah Omarzai, 12 2:14

McClenaghan: Bhuvneshwar has increased his pace

In the spotlight: Vijayakanth Viyaskanth and Shubman GillSRH gave wristspinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth his first game last week in which he gave away just 27 runs in his four overs. He came into this season as Wanindu Hasaranga’s replacement and even though those are massive shoes to fill, another promising outing for Viyaskanth on Thursday will prove that his economy rate of 5.43 for MI Emirates in the ILT20 this year was not a one-off.Shubman Gill’s strike rate dipped from 157.80 in IPL 2023 to 147.40 this IPL in a season when more runs and more sixes are being hit than never before. He may have done that to shoulder more responsibility as captain, which often happens in the IPL, but with the T20 World Cup coming up, in which he is among the traveling reserves, Gill would want to sign off this IPL with a bang.Stats that matter The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad has seen the joint-most sixes struck off spinners (61) this IPL. Abhishek Sharma has never been dismissed by Umesh Yadav, just once by Mohit Sharma and has a dominant record against Rashid Khan: 63 off 30 balls with just one dismissal. Mayank Agarwal doesn’t enjoy a great head to head against Umesh: 42 runs off 41 balls with two dismissals The hard-hitting David Miller has been kept quiet in T20s by Pat Cummins with a record of 38 runs off 46 balls with two dismissals. It will be interesting to see how Shubman Gill takes on the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar, having been dismissed three times by him 10 innings to score just 57 runs off 56 ballsWriddhiman Saha needs 67 and Miller another 76 runs to reach 3000 IPL runs each. Bhuvneshwar is just one scalp away from 300 wickets in T20s. He will be the first Indian fast bowler to get there as the only Indians ahead of him are Yuzvendra Chahal, Piyush Chawla and R Ashwin.Pitch and conditionsBarring the last game, in which it looked like SRH could have even chased down 300, according to KL Rahul, there has been just one game in Hyderabad where neither team scored 200. It means another run-fest awaits us on Thursday evening, especially if SRH bat first, because it has been the most high-scoring ground this season. It will be hot, humid and cloudy and there could be some rain too, but not enough to spoil the party again.

Ranked: Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, Barcelona's greatest No. 10s of all time as wonderkid Lamine Yamal takes iconic shirt number

The 18-year-old is following in a long line of world-class stars to don one of the most famous jerseys in football

It's official: Lamine Yamal is Barcelona's new number 10, inheriting the iconic shirt having penned a new, incredibly lucrative contract with the Catalan powerhouse. It's a shirt with a complex history, but plenty of its owners have claimed the Ballon d'Or down the years, and Yamal will want to be next.

As he follows in the footsteps of some greats of the game, the winger has vowed to forge his own path, saying: "I'm under no pressure; I'll continue enjoying myself with a different number. I'm grateful for the club's trust and I'll try to continue that legacy."

However, the plight of previous incumbent Ansu Fati – another La Masia 'wonderkid' who has endured a sharp fall from grace – should serve as a warning as Yamal prepares to shoulder the weight of expectation at Camp Nou.

But who are the former wearers that the 18-year-old should be looking to emulate? Below, GOAL ranks the top 10 No.10s in Barcelona's storied history…

  • Arquivo pessoal

    10Evaristo

As you're about to discover, a plethora of wonderful Brazilian players have donned the famous No.10 down the years, but Evaristo was the very first almost 70 years ago.

Bestowed that honour way back in 1957, the centre-forward plundered 105 goals in just 151 appearances across five seasons after leaving his home country, winning the Spanish title twice. Controversially, he would go on to join Real Madrid, where he was markedly less successful, but his reputation at Camp Nou remains intact.

    9Gheorghe Hagi

Undoubtedly the best Romanian footballer of all time and one of the finest attacking midfielders on his generation, Hagi graced Barcelona's No.10 shirt after crossing the Clasico divide in 1994 having previously plied his trade at Real Madrid.

Despite his injury problems, Hagi's two-year stay at Camp Nou was still littered with moments of pure magic, resulting in him having the rare honour of being adored by both Barca and Real fans 30 years on.

    8Luis Suarez

Before Luis Suarez there was… Luis Suarez. One of the greatest Spanish players of all time, he took on the No.10 during the 1950s and early 60s, briefly wearing the No.11 in the days before fixed squad numbers.

He was awarded the Ballon d'Or in 1960, becoming the first Spaniard to claim the prize, not long before he departed the club for Inter, where he would also achieve legendary status.

    7Hristo Stoichkov

One of a host of Barcelona players to win the Ballon d'Or with the No.10 on his back, Bulgaria hero Stoichkov enjoyed his best years at Camp Nou in the shirt.

Forming a formidable striker partnership with Brazilian legend Romario, whom he often shared the jersey with, he secured a Golden Ball in 1993-94 season off the back of a prolific, title-winning campaign.

Arsenal eyeing Gyokeres dealHodgson lauds strikerInsists he would make a big impactFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The Gunners are attempting to sign Gyokeres from Sporting in a long-running saga. They have agreed a fee of €70 million (£61m/$82m) for the Sweden international, but now reports suggest that negotiations have hit another snag, over the level of add-ons included in the deal.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Hodgson, who worked in Sweden at the beginning of a distinguished career, believes Gyokeres has everything required to make a major impact at the Emirates if he does end up in north London, and could give the national team a headache given the rival presence of Alexander Isak in the squad.

WHAT ROY HODGSON SAID

Hodgson told Hajper: "Viktor Gyokeres is at a big club already, he's getting the level of football that the Swedish national team would want but If he does come to England, I'm pretty sure that will be welcomed, if you like, by the whole Premier League in terms of the level of play he will bring.

“If Arsenal do sign him, it will be a real feather in their cap. With regard to the national team, that might give the national team coach a decision to make because I think that both Alexander Isak and Gyokeres are used to playing as a lone centre forward, backed up either from behind or from the wings."

Lucy Higham three-for trumps Bryony Smith 70 as Rockets fall short

Superchargers pull victory out of the fire after home side suffer disastrous late collapse

ECB Reporters Network09-Aug-2023

Lucy Higham picked up three wickets in a match-turning spell•Getty Images

Trent Rockets threw away what had seemed a guaranteed first win of the season, losing five wickets in the space of 13 balls to collapse from 102 for 2 107 for 7 before losing by nine runs against Northern Superchargers. With opener Bryony Smith hitting nine fours and three sixes in a superb 70 off 44 balls, Rockets had looked entirely comfortable, needing 43 to win with 35 balls left. But spinners Lucy Higham – herself a former Rocket – and Linsey Smith turned the match on its head in a dramatic conclusion that saw the Superchargers pick up their second win in the competition and leaves Rockets winless after three matches.Superchargers had backed themselves to defend a target after winning the toss, posting 134 for 4 from 100 balls, Phoebe Litchfield leading the way with 38 from 27 balls after Jemimah Rodrigues had opened with 33 from 32, the total bolstered by Bess Heath’s 23 from 10 at the death.Nat-Sciver Brunt admitted she would have batted first too, given the chance, but Katherine Sciver-Brunt limited the consequences of losing the toss, conceding only eight runs from 15 balls in the powerplay. At the other end, left-arm spinner Kirstie Gordon benefitted from the pressure Sciver-Brunt created as Marie Kelly skewed her first ball to short third, the Superchargers posting 24 for 1 from 25.Rodrigues got lucky on 17 when an edge off Naomi Dattani struck keeper Lizelle Lee on the knee, and again on 20, driving Gordon on the off side, where Fran Wilson put down a good chance at extra cover, but then Alexa Stonehouse struck an important blow for Rockets just past halfway, bowling the India star behind her legs for 33.Superchargers, needing boundaries, lost Georgia Wareham to some excellent work from Lee standing up to Dattani, the South African grabbing a thin top edge above her head, after which Litchfield, having heaved a six over cow corner off Alana King, holed out attempting a repeat. But Heath whacked a six and three fours to lift the total, with Katherine Sciver-Brunt oddly not bowled out.It did not look enough as the Rockets put themselves ahead of the game by collecting 33 without loss from the first 25, Superchargers offering too much width to Smith and Lee, although the former was put down on 21 when Alice Davidson-Richards shelled a straightforward catch at mid-off.Lee eventually departed for 16, caught at deep midwicket, but by the halfway point the target was already down to 64, the irrepressible Smith smiting big sixes off Wareham and Lucy Higham to reach 50 from 32 balls, her second half-century in the 100-ball format. The 25-year-old right-hander muscled a third maximum, this time off Linsey Smith, before another mighty slog off Wareham at last found a fielder, Higham taking her second catch to end what had looked nailed on as the match-winning innings.Rockets needed 33 from the final 25, yet suddenly the picture changed with only seven runs accrued from the next 16 balls and five wickets lost. Higham bowled both Nat Sciver-Brunt and Wilson in the space of three balls with her clever offbreaks, Smith took two in four to dismiss Jo Gardner and Harmanpreet Kaur – again both bowled – before Higham resumed with a third in the space of four balls, hitting the target again as Dattani’s swing failed to connect.Suddenly the contest was down to the last five deliveries and Rockets, having looked almost home and dry minutes earlier, needed an implausible 24 to win, falling 10 short despite Katherine Sciver-Brunt’s six off the last ball.

Tottenham stance revealed as Ange now offered £241k-per-week Bayern star

Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign a Bayern Munich star this summer by intermediaries, with a report sharing what their stance is on striking a deal to back manager Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham seal place in Europa League quarter-finals after AZ Alkmaar win

Spurs’ hopes of ending their 17-year wait for a major trophy are still alive after they sealed a place in the Europa League quarter-finals with a 3-1 win at home to AZ Alkmaar on Thursday evening.

Tottenham set to axe "powerful" young player after making tough decision

There’s no long-term place for him in Ange Postecoglou’s ranks.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 12, 2025

Wilson Odobert opened the scoring with an excellent finish before James Maddison was on target to make it 2-0, gifting the home side an aggregate lead, with Peer Koopmeiners then handing Postecoglou a brief scare by taking advantage of a misplaced Lucas Bergvall pass to grab one back for the visitors.

Luckily, Odobert was on hand for his second of the game and Tottenham’s third of the match around 15 minutes from full-time. The game ended with a much-needed 3-1 victory for the Lilywhites, who now face Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in the next round.

Bergvall put in a very impressive display, barring his error, while the likes of Odobert, Dominic Solanke, James Maddison, Son Heung-min and the rejuvenated Djed Spence also had very solid outings against the Eredivisie visitors.

“Really liked the way the boys addressed the challenge tonight,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s performance against AZ.

“It’s not easy when you’re 1-0 down before the game starts. You know you don’t want to give the opposition any opportunity to get a further advantage. I thought we started the game really well. Really composed and controlled. We didn’t create a lot but at the same time we just had them camped in their half and they didn’t really venture anywhere near our goal.

“Scored a really good goal from our press. And second half started brilliantly, exactly what we wanted to do, got our goal, and then we gave them a goal. That puts the tie again on edge a little bit. But I thought our response to that was really good, scored another good goal, probably should have got another one or two to finish the game off.”

Tottenham stance with Ange Postecoglou offered Leroy Sané

Off the field, Spurs need to address key areas in the squad to avoid a repeat of their underwhelming domestic campaign, which has been summed up by a lack of squad depth and injuries to important players.

Tottenham are believed to be in the market for a new forward this summer, alongside their plan to buy Mathys Tel permanently, and it has now come to light that they’ve been handed the chance to do a deal for Bayern’s Leroy Sané.

Leroy Sane for Bayern Munich

The £241,000-per-week winger will be a free agent at the end of this season as things stand, following five fruitful years at the Allianz Arena, with The Boot Room’s Graeme Bailey now reporting that he’s been floated towards N17.

It is believed Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Sane by agents, but as things stand, they haven’t taken the bait and are simply being kept aware of his ongoing situation. The “incredible” former Man City and Schalke star, as lauded by Pep Guardiola, could be one of the bargains of the summer.

He’s racked up 56 goals and 50 assists in total during his time at Bayern, but Spurs would likely need the 29-year-old to lower his wage demands, as Sane’s current salary would make him the club’s highest earner above Son.

Worth more than Rice & Odegaard: Arsenal hit the jackpot on "superb" star

Things might be going wrong for Arsenal at the moment, but the future is still bright.

Mikel Arteta and Co have built a team jam-packed with incredible talent, be that from the academy, underappreciated gems or big-money signings.

For example, Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly look set to star in the first team for years to come, while the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães have become world-class defenders.

Arsenal's Martin Odegaard celebrates scoring their first goal withDeclanRiceand Leandro Trossard

Even Martin Odegaard, who’s having a down year, and Declan Rice, who stands as the club’s record signing, have more to give in the coming years, and one of Arteta’s most controversial signings is worth millions more than both midfielders.

The valuations of Rice and Odegaard

There is no escaping from the fact that this season has been disappointing for Odegaard.

Martin Odegaard looks dejected for Arsenal

So far, the club captain has only been able to score three goals and provide six assists in 2208 minutes of action across 28 appearances, which comes out to an underwhelming average of a goal involvement every 3.11 games, or every 245.33 minutes.

Moreover, in some of the must-win games against sides the Gunners really should be beating, like Everton, West Ham United and Fulham, the 26-year-old has just not stepped up.

However, with that said, he’s got an impressive track record in North London, as shown by his successive Player of the Year awards, so it is understandable that the CIES Football Observatory continues to value him at around €88.6m, which converts to about £73m.

Rice, on the other hand, is valued at a whopping €108.3m, which converts to about £90m, and while that is less than the £105m he cost the club a year and a half ago, it’s still an enormous sum of money for a central midfielder, although more than justified.

Arsenal's DeclanRicecelebrates after the match

The former West Ham captain might have taken some time to get up to speed this term and struggled last weekend, but he has generally been one of the North Londoners’ better players in recent months.

The Englishman has managed to adapt to the left-eight role rather well, and, on top of his ball-winning ability, has been a useful ball-progressor for the side, mostly from his ability to maraud up the pitch, which has led to his teammates nicknaming him ‘the horse’ – make of that what you will.

However, another of Arteta’s big signings is now worth even more than the midfielder, and substantially so.

The Arteta signing worth millions more than Odegaard and Rice

While the likes of Saka and Saliba are just as, if not more important, to the team, neither one was signed by Arteta.

Arsenal's KaiHavertzreacts

Kai Havertz, on the other hand, was for around £65m in June 2023, and while he’s a player who generates mixed opinions, he’s one that the CIES Football Observatory value at a staggering €130m, which converts to a cool £108m.

Not only is that a massive £43m increase on the fee paid by the Gunners, but it’s also £35m more than Odegaard’s valuation and £18m more than Rice’s.

That is a number that is sure to generate some strong opinions from some, but there may be a few reasons as to why it’s so high, starting with the fact that, for all the flak he gets for missing chances, the German has a pretty good record when starting down the middle.

For example, while he ended last season with 14 goals and seven assists in 51 games, he scored eight goals and provided all seven assists in just 18 games as a central striker.

Moreover, before his hamstring injury, the “superb” attacker, as dubbed by Arteta, scored 15 goals and provided five assists in just 34 appearances, which works out to a goal involvement every 1.7 games and leaves him the team’s top-scorer.

Finally, there are factors off the pitch, such as the fact he’s still just 25 and has a contract with the club that is set to run until the summer of 2028.

Ultimately, Havertz will continue to be a striker who divides opinion, but his record is better than most people give him credit for, and there is still time for him to improve further.

£265,000-per-week Arsenal star could now be out injured until 2026

He faces a hefty leave of absence.

Head's love affair with Adelaide continues

There is a lot of talk about whether the Australia men’s team has fallen out of favour with the general public. Regardless of how much truth or otherwise there is around that, there could be no doubt about the affection felt for Travis Head when he brought up a hometown century at Adelaide Oval. Most of the 24,449 spectators who attended the opening day were still there when Head drove Alzarri Joseph down the ground to bring up his fifth Test hundred from 125 balls and there was a lengthy ovation as he soaked in the moment. “The mayor of Adelaide,” injured captain Pat Cummins called him during a commentary stint on earlier in the innings. He was the first South Australia batter to make a hundred at the ground since Greg Blewett’s debut century against England in 1994-95.It continued a prolific home record for Head since the start of last season’s Ashes where he tore apart England with an 85-ball hundred at the Gabba before capping his series with another counter-attacking display on a lively green surface in Hobart. He was Player of the Series despite missing one game with Covid-19.Since the Gabba last season, he has so far made 570 runs in Australia at a strike-rate 87.82. Three hundreds should have been four, but he managed to chop on for 99 against Kraigg Brathwaite in Perth. After that lapse he admitted the moment could haunt him. He has quickly made amends.”Play as straight as possible, try not to cut it off the stumps,” he told on what he was thinking in the 90s. “Cricket’s a funny game. One run does magical things to the brain. It was a long week, nice to get over the line with the next one.”The lift in batting returns, and significantly the strike-rate from before last season, are notable: in his first 19 Tests he struck at 49.65. Scoring rate is not everything in Test cricket (although try telling that to Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum) but having a counter-attacking middle-order batter, especially to follow the insatiable appetite for run-making of the team’s No. 3 and 4, brings another dimension to the order.Head has also enjoyed a prolific year in ODI cricket where he is averaging 68.75 with a strike-rate of 112.24 and this version of him is the one very familiar to those who have played against him in state cricket.”He’s always been able to change the game,” Marnus Labuschagne, who also ended the opening day unbeaten with a century, said. “I’ve played many games against Travis when we’ve got South Australia on the ropes and [he] comes out and just changes the game. The shadows lengthen at the Adelaide oval•Getty Images

“I always felt like once he played like he wanted to [in Tests] and we knew like he could, almost taking the shackles off and letting him play, he’s certainly not someone who has got the perfect forward defence, but he certainly takes attacks down and is so hard to bowl to. When he’s on a roll he makes big scores. He’s been doing it since we were very young…so I’ve got so much confidence now he’s playing in this manner and taking the game on.”Labuschagne also believed that Head’s slightly less-than textbook technique was one of his strengths.”He’s hitting balls off the top of the stumps for four… he’s just a hard person to stop when he’s going because he plays a bit awkward,” he said. “He sits back, gets low on that back foot, cuts the ball and carves the ball out to the off side. The Australian conditions just suit him beautifully, the bouncier wickets, with the width and just staying a little bit more leg side.”That nod to Australia conditions, and what happened between the two home summers, highlights the challenge ahead for Head. He found life much tougher in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, averaging just 15.16 with a strike-rate of 48.40 across five Tests. In February, Australia travel to India for four Tests and the notion has been floated whether he could lose his place in the XI in a horses-for-courses selection.”They are moments that obviously stand out and it is a stat-based game,” he said before the second Test. “But two series, I am early in my career still in terms of international cricket in the subcontinent. A lot of players have missed out. I’m not going to change the wheel or invent anything different.”That is in the future for Head. For now, he will still have the applause of the Adelaide crowd ringing in his ears.

Himachal Pradesh fast bowler Sidharth Sharma dies aged 28

He had been hospitalised after complaining of breathing trouble during a Ranji Trophy practice session in Vadodara

Nikhil Sharma13-Jan-2023Sidharth Sharma, the Himachal Pradesh fast bowler, has died aged 28. He died on Thursday in Vadodara, where he had been in hospital for close to two weeks.Sidharth’s last rites were performed in Nangal, Punjab, on Friday. Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu shared his condolences via Twitter.

Sidharth, a resident of the Himachal town of Una, was part of the squad that had travelled to Vadodara to play a Ranji Trophy match against Baroda from January 3 to 6. He complained of breathing trouble during a practice session on December 31, and was hospitalised later that day.Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Himachal left-arm spinner Mayank Dagar said Sidharth had been on ventilator support.”From January 3 to 6, we played against Baroda, but all of us focused on Siddharth’s health even during the match,” Dagar said. “We visited him regularly in hospital, but we had to leave him alone in Baroda and leave for the next match [against Odisha in Nadaun from January 10 to 13].”His breathing problem continued to worsen, after which he was put on a ventilator.”We are all deeply saddened by his death. Sidharth was an important part of our team, and connected well with everyone.”Sidharth, who made his senior debut in a Ranji Trophy game against Bengal in November 2017, played six first-class matches, six List A games, and one T20 game.He was part of the Himachal team that won the Vijay Hazare Trophy in the 2021-22 season, playing three of their matches including the final against Tamil Nadu, where he returned figures of 1 for 34 in his 10 overs.

His value has risen by £83m: Arsenal hit the jackpot on "sensational" star

The mood around Arsenal might not be ideal at the moment, but in the grand scheme of things, the club are in a far better position than they were when Mikel Arteta took charge.

The Spaniard took the reins in December 2019, when the team were languishing in midtable, and while it took a few years of finishing outside the top four, he’s now turned them into contenders in the Premier League and Champions League.

A significant reason for the team’s uptick in fortunes has undoubtedly been his leadership and tactical approach, but his signings have been just as important.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetaapplauds fans after the match

Not only has he been able to spend big on established stars, but he’s been able to sign underappreciated players who have since become integral to the side, including one whose value has exploded in recent years.

Arteta's best Arsenal signings

While the likes of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz are often the first players people think about when the topic of Arteta’s signings comes up, understandably so, there are a couple of other stars now of the team who were signed for significantly less.

For example, in the same summer that the club spent £105m on the Englishman, they also spent around £38m on then-Ajax star Jurrien Timber, and while he missed practically all of last season with an ACL injury, he’s been integral to the team this year.

In all, the Dutch international has made 33 first-team appearances this term, and what’s so impressive is that ten of those have come at right-back, ten at left-back and three at centre-back, highlighting how versatile he is.

The same summer the Utrecht-born defender made his way to N5, the club made the surprise decision to add another goalkeeper to the squad in David Raya, who joined on a season-long loan with a £27m option to buy, which was activated last summer.

There were plenty of detractors at the time who could not understand why the manager wanted another shot-stopper when he already had Aaron Ramsdale in the side, but over the last campaign and a half, the Spaniard has shown the doubters exactly why the manager wanted him.

He’s incredibly calm on the ball, sits in the top 4% of keepers across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, for percentage of crosses stopped and won the Premier League’s Golden Glove award last season.

Both Timber and Raya have become key parts of Arteta’s title-challenging squad, but there’s another player who was signed a few years ago who is arguably even more important and has a lofty valuation to suggest as much.

The Arsenal star whose valuation has exploded

There are a few of Arteta’s signings who could fit the bill here, from Gabriel Magalhaes to, once again, Timber and Raya, but in this instance, the star in question plays further up the pitch and has a lot more responsibility on his shoulders.

The player in question is, Martin Odegaard, who joined the club on a permanent deal worth up to £34m with add-ons in August 2021, following a reasonably successful short-term loan the season prior.

Since then, the “sensational” Norwegian maestro, as dubbed by The Athletic’s Aaron Catterson-Reid, has become an incredibly important member of the team, as demonstrated by Arteta handing him the captaincy at just 23 years old and his lofty valuation of up to €140m from Football Transfers.

That converts to around £117m, which is a staggering increase of around 244% from the price the Gunners paid for him just three and a half years ago.

Now, it has to be said that so far this season, the former Real Madrid prospect has not played anywhere near his best, and while his ankle injury certainly hasn’t helped in that regard, a return of three goals and six assists in 25 games just isn’t good enough.

That said, fans shouldn’t turn their backs on the Drammen-born magician just yet, as last season, he ended up with a haul of 22 goal involvements in 48 games while winning the club’s Player of the Year Award for the second campaign running.

Moreover, the year before that, he scored 15 goals and provided seven assists in 45 games.

Ultimately, while Odegaard is having a campaign to forget this year, he has been one of Arsenal’s best players for a few years now, and for that, it’s hard to argue against the increase in his valuation.
