PSL, Zimbabwe games moved from Lahore due to smog

“Cannot compromise on heath of players or officials,” says PCB chief executive

Pakistan Super League

Lahore will no longer host the three T20I matches between Zimbabwe and Pakistan, or the four playoff games in the PSL, because of seasonal smog. The Zimbabwe matches will be moved to Rawalpindi, which means all six white-ball games in that series will take place in the same city. Karachi, meanwhile, which was not scheduled to host any international matches this month, now finds itself playing host to the remaining four PSL matches, including the final on November 17. The precise dates of the matches remain unchanged.”We have been keeping a close eye on air quality forecasts over the last two weeks,” PCB chief executive Wasim Khan said. “Following the sudden deterioration in air quality and now further expected air pollution in November, we have made a swift decision to move the matches scheduled in Lahore.”The early onset of hazardous pollution and subsequent poor air quality meant that the risk to keep matches in Lahore at this stage was too great. An early decision was made to ensure logistical challenges could be dealt with sooner rather than later. We cannot and will not compromise on the health and well-being of the players or officials.”ALSO READ: ‘Fully fit’ Chigumbura targets much-needed return to form in PakistanThis marks the second time the venue for part of the Zimbabwe series has been changed. Just a fortnight ago, logistical challenges forced the PCB to replace Multan, originally clocked in to host three games, with Lahore, with disagreement between the PCB and the city government in Multan over financial outlay. This prompted the board to decide to take the series elsewhere.Lahore has, over the past few years, faced increasingly high levels of seasonal smog in November and December, with the early onset of smog rendering the city unfit to host cricket, as scheduled, in the second week of November. The PCB usually avoids hosting matches there in November-December and prefers the southern part of the country to avoid any inconvenience. Multan, situated in southern Punjab, was part of the original plan for that reason. Smog is less of an issue for Karachi, the southern-most city in the country, thanks to the sea breeze it experiences owing to its location along the Arabian Sea.

Yorkshire appoint sub-committee to investigate Azeem Rafiq racism allegations

Prominent South Asian figures asked to join review following criticism of Yorkshire response

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Sep-2020Yorkshire has appointed a sub-committee including prominent figures in the British-Asian cricket community, as it launches its review into allegations of institutional racism from their former player Azeem Rafiq.Dr Samir Pathak, a Trustee of the MCC Foundation, has been co-opted as chair, while Gulfraz Riaz, the chairman of the National Asian Cricket Council (NACC) has also been invited to serve, along with Stephen Willis, Chief Financial Officer at Durham University, and Hanif Malik OBE, a former Non-Executive Director at Sport England. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo on September 2, Rafiq – now aged 29 and pursuing a career away from the game – told how his playing days with Yorkshire had left him “on the brink of suicide”, adding that his concerns about a racist culture within the club had been “ignored”, and that he had been released from his contract in the aftermath of a family tragedy. In the wake of Rafiq’s claims, 120 Yorkshire-based Asian businesses have written an open letter to the club, expressing their concern over the handling of the allegations and strongly requesting justice and equality.”Cricket is synonymous with both English and South Asian culture,” wrote British Asians Against Racism on change.org. “Our shared love of the sport is something which should unite our communities. It should never create divisions between us. The Asian community has strong roots in Yorkshire … however, with a fractured relationship, we fear both YCCC and young Asian cricketers will suffer adversely.”The county’s initial response to the furore had heightened the scrutiny, with Roger Pugh, the chairman of the ECB Yorkshire South Premier League launching a personal attack on Rafiq’s character in a blog post – subsequently deleted – dated September 3.The club’s appointment of the independent law firm, Squire Patton Boggs, also invited suggestions of a conflict of interest, given that Yorkshire’s chairman, Roger Hutton, is a former partner of the firm. On change.org, the wording of the petition added that “the apparent lack of independence of the investigator does not inspire confidence in the process”.However, having insisted that Hutton “no longer had any connection, personal or professional, with Squire”, Yorkshire have subsequently confirmed that the newly appointed sub-committee are satisfied with the firm’s credentials.Commenting on his appointment as Chair, Dr Pathak said: “Being of British-Indian heritage and having been born in Yorkshire, it is an honour to chair this sub-committee which will review the serious grievances raised.”There is a need for all organisations to be diverse and inclusive. My heritage means that I have a deep-rooted interest in equality within sport and society, and I aim to be as impartial as possible throughout this fair and independent investigation.”On behalf of the NACC, Mr Riaz added: “The National Asian Cricket Council is grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to what is an important review for Azeem, Yorkshire County Cricket Club and the game more broadly.”In the first instance, it will be crucial to understand the precise nature of Azeem’s grievances and to ensure that following a thorough and transparent review, a suitable outcome is reached.”Beyond that, the National Asian Cricket Council looks forward to being able to contribute more holistically to recommendations that move us all closer to best practice. We feel strongly that cricket is a game for everyone.”

Spurs gifted chance to sign £23k-p/w winger for just £10m this summer

Tottenham have the chance to land an exciting new attacker this summer for just £10m, it has been reported.

Spurs keen on attacking additions

Ange Postecoglou's side have already made one addition this summer, re-loaning Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for the upcoming season. However, they remain keen on adding more firepower to their side and are expected to sign at least one more attacking player this summer.

The Spurs boss admitted as much after his side's Premier League finish saw them qualify for the Europa League next season.

"Yeah, absolutely. It's no secret. You saw the way we finished the season. We obviously lost Richy and Timo as well with injuries but we're fairly light in that area," he said. "We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up.

"We're in Europe as well next year so we'll have more games and it's definitely an area of the park we'll need to strengthen."

Spurs keen on signing £70m star to partner Romero

The towering star could help tighten up the Lilywhites’ defence next season.

ByJack Salveson Holmes May 31, 2024 Edwards an option for Spurs return

Reports claim Spurs could finally pull the trigger to bring Marcus Edwards back to north London. The winger left the Lilywhites for Portugal during Mauricio Pochettino's time in charge of the club, and his stock has risen dramatically since.

He drew plenty of praise when he met his former side in the Champions League back in 2022, with the TNT Sport studio waxing lyrical about his ability.

“On the ball, dribbling at people, he’s up there [with the best]”, Owen Hargreaves explained. “He leaves people for dead. Technically he’s fantastic. The young man has so much ability with the ball at his feet, makes it look easy."

Pedro Mendes added: “He’s a fantastic little player. When he signed for Guimaraes in the first days we saw something there. Then he signed for Sporting and he just became a fantastic player. He’s been terrific.”

Now, Football.London reveal that Spurs are "keeping an eye" on his situation, with Edwards down to the final two years of his £23,000 a week deal in Portugal.

His arrival would provide a boost to their homegrown quota, while he also has a clause in his deal which will see Tottenham land a hefty discount should he arrive. That is because, when he was sold to Sporting, Spurs inserted a 50% sell on clause, which they dropped to 35% during negotiations to sign Pedro Porro in January 2023.

Now, Sporting "are understood to value him [Edwards] at £15million", but said clause would allow Spurs to snag him for just £9.75m, far less than his £22m market value [as per transfermarkt].

As it stands, Edwards is among those that are under consideration, with the report adding that there "has been no concrete approach yet from Tottenham", but he could well tick a lot of boxes for a very small fee, allowing Postecoglou to focus on other areas of his side that need strengthening.

'The sport doesn't matter, Australia is always a big one' – Devine

They say to keep your friends close and your enemies even closer. There will be no secrets when New Zealand meet Australia in a cut-throat game at the Junction Oval on Monday. The winner progresses to the semi-final, the loser goes home. Both sides know each other intimately, with so many of New Zealand’s players featuring heavily in the WBBL, playing and training alongside the Australian players. It’s no secret that New Zealand are struggling in this tournament. The loss to India appeared tighter than it was, with Amelia Kerr’s freak innings almost papering over the cracks that India exposed in New Zealand’s batting. Those cracks became cavernous against Bangladesh, who bowled them out for just 91. It was their second-lowest total in Women’s World T20 history and their sixth-lowest in T20 internationals overall. The bowlers saved their blushes, with Hayley Jensen and Leigh Kasperek taking three wickets each as Bangladesh imploded in the chase. The captain Sophie Devine knows the area they must improve ahead of the clash with Australia.”Probably batting a bit better than we did today,” Devine said.”But look we’re really excited about that. Obviously, we wanted to get done with today and get the points in the bank and then it’s onto Australia who we’ve played a lot of cricket with and against and we’re really looking forward to it. Any time we come up against Australia, it doesn’t matter what sport it is, it’s going to be a big one. We’re looking forward to having a day off tomorrow and then getting stuck into them.”New Zealand’s reliance on their two stars in Devine and Suzie Bates is clear for the world to see. Both Bangladesh and India exploited it expertly, keeping the in-form Devine away from strike in the Powerplay and letting the run-rate build pressure.Bates’ form is also a worry with scores of 13, 6, and 15 in the tournament to-date. But Kasperek backed New Zealand’s big guns to fire against Australia.”I think they’ll be a little bit disappointed in how they have gone,” Kasperek said.”But when we’ve been training they’ve been hitting it really well and we’re really lucky we’ve got number one and number two in the world at the moment and the very fact that even today and against Sri Lanka, we got over the line when Suzie didn’t go well, but other people have been stepping up in the middle overs. You want your big players to step up in big games so hopefully, they can do that on Monday.Another area of concern for New Zealand is their lack of experience against left-handed batting and left-arm bowling. The White Ferns do not have a single left-hander or left-arm bowler in their entire squad. Chamari Atapattu (41 off 30), Udeshika Prabodhani (0 for 16 from 4 overs with 15 dot balls), Rajashwari Gayakwad (1 for 22 from 4 overs with 14 dots) and Radha Yadav (1 for 25 from 4 overs with 12 dots) have all caused New Zealand trouble in this tournament.Australia has two in-form left-handers in their top six in Beth Mooney and Rachael Haynes, while Jess Jonassen is a key component of the attack. Sophie Molineux, an allrounder who bats left-handed and bowls left-arm orthodox, will also be heavily considered for selection provided she can overcome a thigh injury.Kasperek believes it’s not a concern for the squad.”A couple of us like to dabble in a little bit of left-arm (at training),” Kasperek said.”But when we’ve had trainings we’ve tried to have net bowlers coming in and we’ve had our coaches come around the wicket and try to replicate the left-armers as much as possible.”I guess it’s just something in New Zealand that we just generally don’t have a lot of. Yes, it is different. But again, I think we’ve played enough cricket that we should be able to adapt to.”New Zealand haven’t beaten Australia in any format since February 2017, including six ODIs and four T20Is. But they haven’t met in a T20 international since the last World T20 in West Indies in 2018.Kasperek said the familiarity of their foes means Monday holds no fears.”I think we’ve been pretty close in a lot of games but I think it just that confidence thing,” Kasperek said.”Probably just a big player stepping up, especially with the bat. We’re really lucky in the fact we’ve had a lot of girls go over and play in the Big Bash and be successful so I think that will actually hold us in really good stead playing against Australia.”

Man Utd need to ditch their "short-term fix" who’s worth less than Amrabat

While injuries have taken their toll at Manchester United this season, the crux of the problem appears to have been the midfield ranks, with Erik ten Hag unable to settle on a consistent unit throughout the entire campaign.

18-year-old rising star Kobbie Mainoo has breathed new life into that department of late, yet the issue remains as to just who will partner the teenager in the long-term, with Casemiro – who appears set to depart this summer – looking more and more like a costly mistake with each passing game.

Ten Hag may well have hoped that a reunion with Sofyan Amrabat – whom he coached in the Netherlands at Utrecht – would have proved far more beneficial, with the Moroccan international simply looking like a "fish out of water" at Old Trafford thus far, as per pundit Chris Sutton.

It will come as no surprise to learn that the man who once got the better of Kylian Mbappe is set to be sent packing at the end of his miserable loan spell, with the Fiorentina maestro – and Casemiro – likely set to be followed out the door by a third midfield asset in the form of Christian Eriksen.

Christian Eriksen's record at Man Utd

Snapped up on a free transfer back in the summer of 2022, it looked at the time as if the experienced Dane – who had beaten the odds to return to the game following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 – would merely be a replacement for the departing Juan Mata, the type of player who could unlock a defence late on in games off the bench.

However, with Ten Hag's protracted pursuit of Frenkie de Jong falling flat, Eriksen was repurposed as a deep-lying option alongside fellow arrival, Casemiro, catching the eye during 2022/23 after chalking up two goals and ten assists in all competitions.

Despite that impressive return, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford man was hampered by an ankle injury sustained in January last year and in truth, he has not looked the same since, notably being hooked on the hour mark during the FA Cup semi-final triumph over Brighton and Hove Albion, in which he had a 'day to forget' – as per The Guardian's Jamie Jackson.

As for the current campaign, the 32-year-old – who has 15 goals and assists in 65 games for the club – has been something of a bystander to proceedings amid the rise of young Mainoo and with Scott McTominay stealing the limelight with nine goals across all fronts.

Now, his future at the Theatre of Dreams rightly looks uncertain…

Christian Eriksen's market value in 2024

Such has been Eriksen's tumble down the pecking order this season, the £150k-per-week star has been afforded just nine top-flight starts to date, having only recently gone public with his frustration at that lack of game time.

Branded a mere "short-term fix" by The Athletic's Adam Crafton, the 128-cap Denmark international does still have a year left on his current contract in Manchester, although rumours are rife that he could be shown the door 12 months early.

If he is to depart this summer, United will likely still make a profit after signing him for nothing almost two years ago, although the size of the transfer fee may not quite be as enticing as it should be.

As per Transfermarkt, the experienced talent was valued at around €25m (£21m) at the peak of his time under Ten Hag back in November 2022, albeit with that having since plummetted to just €10m (£9m) at present.

Sofyan Amrabat

While age may be a factor in that decline, it is telling that he has now even slipped behind Amrabat of all people, with the forgotten man valued at €22m (£19m), despite his lack of action in a United shirt.

With there seemingly little sense in keeping Eriksen – nor Amrabat and Casemiro – around for another campaign, the new Sir Jim Ratcliffe regime must be ruthless and wield the axe this summer.

Steven Smith headlines Australia stars returning to Big Bash

Here is a rundown of who each team gets back after Australia finished their brief tour of India

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jan-2020The majority of the Australia one-day squad will return to Big Bash action over the next few days for the backend of the regular season and then the finals for the teams that make it.Of the players who were in India, only David Warner, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc – who don’t have BBL deals – will not be available. Here is a rundown of who each team gets back:Melbourne StarsPeter Handscomb, who did not get a game in India, will return to bolster the middle order and will likely resume the wicketkeeping duties from Seb Gotch. Adam Zampa will be back as a key part of the spin attack for the Stars who are already assured of hosting the Qualifier on January 31 with the loser of that match earning a second chance to reach the final by playing in the Challenger on February 6.Sydney SixersThe Sixers are among the teams currently fighting for second spot to play the Stars and, for the first time in six years, will be able to call on Steven Smith who is available from the match against the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba. Josh Hazlewood will be given a few extra days rest after the India tour, but will likely be available for the Sixers’ final regular season game against the Melbourne Renegades and the finals. They remain unsure whether Sean Abbott will have recovered in time for the finals, by when they will have lost Tom Curran to England duty.Adelaide StrikersAlex Carey’s return will bolster the Strikers’ middle order as they push for second place and for the first time this season they will be able to field their strongest possible batting line-up with Carey and Travis Head back in harness.Perth ScorchersAshton Turner and Ashton Agar will be back in the fold as the Scorchers look to build on their handsome victory against the Sydney Thunder. They will hope that Turner’s lean time in India does not impact his form for the final stretch of the tournament. Morne Morkel will also play the final regular season match against the Thunder – which may well be a decider for qualification – in place of Chris Jordan so he is eligible for the finals.Sydney ThunderThe Thunder did not have anyone in the one-day squad. Last season Cummins made one late-season outing for them but he will not play this year.Brisbane HeatMarnus Labuschagne is available to add to his seven T20 outings and he may well be seen as a key to stopping the sort of batting collapses – that reached new heights against the Renegades – which have left the Heat battling to reach the finals.Hobart HurricanesIt will likely be too late to save their season, but D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade will be able to link up at last at the top of the order for the Hurricanes’ last two matches having not joined forces this season due to their respective international commitments. Short spent the three matches in India carrying the drinks after his late call-up to replace the injured Abbott.Melbourne RenegadesIt is officially all over for the Renegades after their horror run of nine defeats on the bounce ended any chance of defending their title. However, they have won their last two games – extraordinarily so against the Heat – and should have Aaron Finch and Kane Richardson back for the final two outings which could cause problems for opposition still looking to secure their finals berths.

Tottenham eyeing "bargain" move for £50m+ star who Pep called "incredible"

Tottenham are thought to be weighing up a summer move for a player they actually wanted back in 2019.

Attackers wanted at Tottenham alongside Werner

Ange Postecoglou lost Harry Kane to Bayern Munich last summer but has managed to bolster his attacking ranks with moves for Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner.

Werner arrived on loan with an option to buy in January, and after contributing to four Premier League goals in eight games, looks on course to make his move permanent.

Spurs forward Timo Werner

It has been claimed Tottenham are more likely than not to make Werner's loan deal permanent from RB Leipzig, with another centre-forward also wanted ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Ivan Toney, Mohamed Amoura, Omar Marmoush and Santiago Gimenez are thought to be centre-forward targets, whereas Spurs are also reportedly in pole position to sign Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White.

Another attacking midfielder who could be on the move this summer is Werner’s recent Leipzig teammate, Dani Olmo.

Spurs actually made an offer to sign Olmo when he was still at Dinamo Zagreb back in 2019, and it looks as if he is back on the radar in north London.

Spurs eyeing Dani Olmo move

According to reports in Germany, relayed by Sport Witness, Tottenham are one of the clubs eyeing up a move to sign Olmo.

The attacking midfielder can leave if his €60m (£51.2m) release clause is triggered, something which is seen as a “bargain for top clubs” in England, including Spurs, and a few other La Liga sides.

However, reports elsewhere have claimed that Spurs’ rivals Chelsea are also keen on Olmo and are ready to activate his release clause.

Since joining Leipzig in 2020, the Spain international has gone from strength to strength and is now valued at a career-high €50m by Transfermarkt.

The 25-year-old has been missing through injury at points this season but can turn out on the wing if needed, making him a possible versatile attacking option for Postecoglou.

Olmo also caught the eye of Pep Guardiola back in 2019, with the Manchester City boss calling the Spaniard a “top player” and “incredible”.

"He's a top player – he has a bright future, of course. His performance today shows it. About the transfer and the money he deserves, that is not the point. The point is he is an incredible player and I am pretty sure he is able to play in the strong leagues in Europe. Hopefully if Dinamo wants and he wants, it can happen."

It looks as if a move could be one to watch this summer, and it wouldn’t be a shock if Olmo is on the move ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Barcelona's interest in Philogene was centred around a season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy, contingent on the number of minutes he plays next season. The proposed transfer fee for the permanent move could range between €20m and €23m (£16m/$21m-£19m/$24m). However, Philogene seems to be prioritizing offers from England's top-flight clubs rather than a move to Spain.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali expressed his willingness to allow players to leave if they wish to pursue opportunities elsewhere while also confirming the interest of other clubs. Speaking to talkSPORT, he said, "Yes, everything is true. But I told my fans that I would sign nobody. My idea in football is not to make money, my idea is to make a stronger and bigger club. But to make a bigger club, sometimes if a player says, 'I want to go', that is a different case."

Ilicali emphasized his philosophy of not hindering players' careers due to contractual obligations. "For me, one player change is not the end of the world. But my players, I would never want to rein in their careers or their moves because of a contract I have," he added.
