Nazmul Hassan: ‘Miraz had been bowling well in the Tests and this is a very important series for us’•AFP

Ten days after announcing that it was his decision to drop Mahmudullah for the Colombo Test, BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said he was behind the decision to pick Mehedi Hasan for the ODIs against Sri Lanka.Mehedi had returned to Dhaka from Colombo on March 20 with the other Test players who were not part of the ODI squad that was announced the previous week. But three days later he was added to the ODI side, for the first time in his career.Hassan said that he first called chief selector Minhajul Abedin, telling him to include Mehedi in the ODI squad, before calling the player himself to ask him to make plans to return to Sri Lanka. He said Mehedi’s inclusion in the playing XI for the first ODI was only decided on only after the team arrived at the Dambulla ground; there was discussion around whether left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam could be added to the XI instead.”I called up [Minhajul Abedin] Nannu to send over [Mehedi Hasan] Miraz,” Hassan said. “I found out he is in Khulna, and told him that he must get back to Sri Lanka. Basically we wanted to keep him as an option because they have a number of quality left-hand batsmen. Miraz had been bowling well in the Tests and this is a very important series for us. But when I sat with the team that morning [of the ODI], it still wasn’t decided if Miraz or Sunzamul [Islam] would be playing. It was finalised after coming to the ground.”Mehedi opened the bowling in the chase of 325 in Dambulla, sending down all ten over for figures of 2 for 43.Last week when Hassan had spoken about his role in the Mahmudullah exclusion, he said that he takes “all the decisions”. He has been vocal about selection decisions since the Afghanistan ODI series last September, and during the Bangladesh Premier League too. Incidentally, in June 2016 Hassan had said that the revamped selection committee would cut down his role in selection decisions.

DRS to be used in PSL play-off matches

The PSL has confirmed that the Decision Review System will be used for the tournament’s three play-off matches starting from Tuesday

Danyal Rasool28-Feb-2017The PSL has confirmed that the Decision Review System will be used for the tournament’s three play-off matches starting from Tuesday. The tournament’s chairman Najam Sethi made the decision public by tweeting, “another first from #HBLPSL. DRS to be used in the #HBLPSL play-off matches.”While the ball-tracking technology Hawk-Eye has been used as a tool by the broadcasters since the start of the PSL, it has not been part of the umpires’ decision-making process. This development possibly also marks the first time DRS will be used in a T20 contest at either franchise or international level. Each side will be allowed one review per innings in the same way the technology is used at ODI level.DRS is, however, not expected to be available for the PSL final, which Sethi announced yesterday would be held in Lahore, as the company handling the Hawk-Eye technology will not travel to Pakistan.Earlier this month, the ICC chief executives committee gave an in-principle approval for use of DRS for the first time in an ICC T20 tournament in 2018, with one review per team in the Women’s World T20 in the West Indies.

Everton Could Land £48K-p/w "Tower Of Strength"

Everton secured survival from relegation in the dying minutes of the Premier League season after a dreadful campaign that once again saw the side perform at an abysmal level throughout.

Indeed, the initial arrival of Sean Dyche lifted Goodison Park off its knees after the sacking of Frank Lampard in January, but the promising early displays – such as the 1-0 win over Arsenal – quickly wore off leaving the Toffees to teeter on the edge of the relegation zone for many weeks and months.

Whilst the most obvious positions to strengthen will be across the forward line after losing Richarlison and Anthony Gordon over the last 12 months, there will certainly be a desire for Dyche to bolster almost every key position to ensure he has quality options on the bench and the ability to rotate throughout the season.

Everton have already made a decision on the future of those with contracts expiring next month; whilst Seamus Coleman, Andy Lonergan and Tom Davies have been offered new deals, Yerry Mina is one of the players who will not be retained beyond this season alongside Conor Coady who will not be offered a permanent contract to remain either after his loan spell.

As a result, there is a real opportunity for Dyche to identify new additions who can make an instant impact in Everton's defensive set up and one player who has been recently linked with a move back to the Premier League via the blue side of Merseyside is former Wolverhampton Wanderers star Romain Saiss.

Would Romain Saiss be a good fit for Everton?

With Coady and Mina are confirmed for an exit and with the club not ruling out the sale of both Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey at this point, there is no reason why Saiss can't provide a solid short-term solution at a great price for Dyche.

The Morocco skipper has spent a year in the Turkish Süper Lig with Besiktas after parting ways with Wolves at the end of his six-year contract but could now be the perfect profile of player to partner James Tarkowski at Goodison Park next season.

Over 25 league appearances, the 33-year-old – dubbed a "tower of strength" by BBC pundit Danny Murphy – scored one goal, tallied up an 82% pass completion rate and kept six clean sheets, as well as averaging 64.1 touches, 1.2 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 3.4 clearances and 4.6 duels won per game, proving he is still a massive presence on the pitch.

romain-saiss-premier-league-everton-transfers

Not only that, Saiss was one of the standout performers at the World Cup in Qatar at the end of last year after captaining his team to a record-breaking achievement by becoming the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the prestigious international competition, another testament to his impeccable leadership skills and rightful nickname as the 'Moroccan Maldini'.

With that being said, the £48k-per-week ace could be a massive asset for the Toffees next season as his consistency and reliability in defence would be warmly welcomed to soften the blow of Mina and Coady's exit next season.

West Ham Can Sign Bowen 2.0 With ‘Unbelievable’ £25m Talent

Jarrod Bowen etched his name in West Ham United folklore when firing in the winning goal in last week's Europa Conference League final victory over Fiorentina.

That 90th-minute strike earned United a 2-1 win in Prague and ended the club's 43-year wait for a major trophy, while at the same time helping to cover the cracks of a poor Premier League campaign.

Bowen is not the only player West Ham have signed from a Championship club, having brought the forward in from Hull City for around £20m three-and-a-half years ago, and they may be about to repeat the trick.

According to the Daily Mail, the Hammers are in the running to sign Alex Scott from second-tier side Bristol City, though they face competition from Premier League rivals Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Is Alex Scott ready for the Premier League?

Scott is still aged just 19, yet he has already racked up 81 appearances for City in the Championship, almost half of those (40) coming in the 2022-23 season.

The ten yellow cards Scott collected in the league last season – the most of any City player – gives a rough indication of what the England U20 international is all about.

However, the Guernsey-born youngster – who can play as a holding midfielder, attacking midfielder and even out wide – particularly thrives in terms of beating his opponents and getting the ball forward.

Indeed, with 2.34 progressive carries per 90 minutes over the past year, Scott ranks in the top 22% of his positional peers, as per FBref. He is also in the top 17% when it comes to successful take-ons.

Jarrod Bowen West Ham

Scott's impressive midfield game at such a young age earned him the ultimate compliment earlier this year when Pep Guardiola described him as an "unbelievable player" following Manchester City's 3-0 win at Ashton Gate in the FA Cup fifth round.

The Robins' reported £25m valuation is said to be putting prospective buyers off making a move but, as was the case with Bowen, there is value to be had from signing players from the Championship.

Like Scott, Bowen had only been a Championship regular for two full seasons before being given a Premier League chance by West Ham.

As pointed out by transfer insider ExWHUEmployee on The West Ham Way podcast, the Hammers are "looking at players in the Championship" this summer with the belief that they will adapt to the Premier League quicker than a foreign import, such as big-money recruit Gianluca Scamacca last year.

Bowen is not West Ham's only success story when recruiting players from further down the ladder, with the likes of Michail Antonio, Flynn Downes and Aaron Cresswell all making an impact. Last season, those four players made a combined 120 appearances in the Premier League alone.

The lure of European football next season, plus a sizeable sum of up to £100m incoming for Declan Rice, means West Ham can lure a higher calibre of player to the London Stadium this summer.

But it may well be that a player such as Scott ticks all the boxes for David Moyes as he looks to repeat the success of previous windows.

Everton Increase Interest In £25m "Talent"

Everton have increased their interest in Almeria striker El Bilal Toure ahead of a potential move to the Premier League, according to reports.

Are Everton signing El Bilal Toure?

The Mali international has been Rubi’s best-performing offensive player at the Power Horse Stadium this season, so it’s no surprise that his high standard of performance has caught the eye of Sean Dyche, who has already been laying the groundwork on the forward behind the scenes.

Back in April, GOAL in Spain reported that the Toffees had made contact with the 21-year-old’s agent to ask what it would take to complete a deal during the upcoming window despite him having missed 11 consecutive games due to sustaining a muscle injury.

The Goodison Park outfit were later claimed to have been considering submitting an offer but accepted that their financial budget was dependent on whether they survived relegation, though with their top-flight safety now confirmed, they appear to be going ahead with their pursuit.

According to The Daily Mail, Everton are "stepping up" their interest in Toure, who can run at 35km/h which is the same speed as a Spinytail Iguana, ahead of a potential move to Merseyside. The Toffees "want to ensure" that the striker has "fully recovered" from his spell on the sidelines before tabling him a deal, and it's believed that he's priced at £25m by Almeria.

UD Almeria El Bilal Toure.

Would Toure be a good signing for Everton?

Everton are clearly serious about landing Toure having made progress in the hunt to sign him over recent weeks, and having been lauded a “major talent” by journalist Graeme Bailey, Almeria’s centre-forward could be a fantastic acquisition at Goodison Park.

The Africa Cup participant, who has the ability to play with both feet, has eight goal contributions (six goals and two assists) to his name in 20 La Liga appearances this season, not to mention that he’s also an ideal target man averaging 2.1 aerial wins per game.

The Adjame native, who has the versatility to operate out wide on both flanks and even in attacking midfield alongside his natural position through the middle, ranks in the 99th percentile for clearances so additionally likes helping out defensively which will be yet another attractive attribute for the boss.

Salernitana are reportedly expected to re-sign Neal Maupay this summer after failing to make a significant impact since joining from Brighton and Hove Albion, so should he depart, Toure may prove to be his ideal replacement and possible upgrade on the Frenchman in L4.

NCL to kick off Bangladesh domestic season, BCL to come later

Bangladesh’s domestic season will now begin with the National Cricket League, after the Bangladesh Cricket League franchises showed reluctance to hold the tournament in September while the national cricketers are busy with the ODIs v Afghanistan

Mohammad Isam04-Sep-2016Bangladesh’s domestic season will now begin with the National Cricket League, after the Bangladesh Cricket League franchises showed a reluctance to hold the tournament in September while the national cricketers are busy with the ODIs against Afghanistan. The NCL, which begins this season on September 25, is the division-wise first-class tournament that is played among the seven divisions from across the country, as well as Dhaka Metropolis. It is divided into two tiers with the top team from the bottom tier being promoted to the top tier after every season. The BCL is the franchise-based first-class tournament, which is placed along geographical zones like north, south, east and central. One of the franchise owners, Prime Bank Limited, pulled out this year due to unavailability of players and a supposed lack of quality in the tournament.BCB’s cricket operations chairman Akram Khan said that since these franchises spend a lot of money on the teams, they wants the top players to play for them. “BCL franchises don’t want to play without the national players. They make a lot of investment. So we planned to postpone the BCL since the national players will be busy at that time with the Afghanistan series. So we will hold the NCL first,” he said. “When an international series is suddenly planned, we are forced to change our calendar. Everyone wanted to play Afghanistan before the England series.”The NCL will be held in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Bogra, Khulna, Fatullah and BKSP.

Sunderland Could Sign Dream Jack Clarke Replacement

Sunderland's season ended last week as they were knocked out of the play-offs in the semi-finals against Luton Town and as a result, they could now spend this summer trying to keep hold of their best players.

Crystal Palace and Brentford are both reportedly keeping tabs on forward Jack Clarke after the Englishman's impressive campaign in the Championship.

The 22-year-old scored nine goals and provided 11 assists in 45 games from out wide in the second tier of English football and the club could be looking for his heir in the transfer market if a move to the Premier League arises.

Who could replace Jack Clarke at Sunderland?

It was recently reported that the Black Cats are one of the clubs interested in a deal to sign CD Universidad Catolica winger Alexander Aravena this summer and he could be the dream heir to Clarke next season.

AZ Alkmaar and Granada are said to be providing competition in the race for his signature as Tony Mowbray eyes up a possible swoop.

Sunderland attacker Jack Clarke.

Whilst it is difficult to predict how a player will adapt after coming over from Chile, his former teammate Marcelino Nunez made the switch to the Championship last summer and enjoyed a strong season with Norwich.

The 23-year-old averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.90 – a score that would have placed him ninth in Sunderland's squad – and chipped in with three goals and two assists from central midfield.

This suggests that it is possible for a player to instantly adapt to English football after moving from South America – and CD Universidad Catolica in particular. Therefore, Aravena could make an instant impact at the Stadium of Light.

The 20-year-old whiz, who can play on the right or the left flank, has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.08 in the Primera Division in 2023, scoring seven goals and creating 13 chances in 13 appearances.

Having also completed 1.2 dribbles per game, it outlines the youngster as an exciting prospect who can make meaningful contributions to matches on a regular basis in spite of his young age.

This comes after he plundered 11 goals and three assists in 24 starts in the league for Catolica in the 2022 campaign, which shows that his current form is not a flash in the pan.

Aravena, whose intelligence was once hailed as "magnificent" by press officer Salvatore Gandhi, is two years younger than Clarke but is already displaying similar qualities by delivering goals and assists at first-team level.

The Sunderland forward, who averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.00 in the Championship in 2022/23, could be on his way out of Wearside this summer but Mowbray signing the Chilean prospect as his heir could be a shrewd piece of business for the club.

His form for Catolica over the last 18 months shows that he has the quality to be a difference-maker in the final third, like the Englishman, and Nunez's seamless adaption to life at Norwich indicates that it is possible for Aravena to hit the ground running.

Tottenham’s remaining fixtures and points prediction after Aston Villa loss

Tottenham Hotspur's chances of finishing inside the Premier League top four are fading after the 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Thursday night, despite some positive signs in the second half.

Spurs fought back from 2-0 down to rescue a point, with Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min getting on the scoresheet in the second half. However, they probably needed three points to keep their Champions League dream alive.

The Lilywhites still trail the Red Devils by six points, despite playing two more games, while Newcastle's emphatic 4-1 win away at Everton means it will also be very hard to catch Eddie Howe's side.

Since our last set of predictions, Tottenham have parted ways with Cristian Stellini, with Ryan Mason taking charge on an interim basis until the end of the season. Here's how we expect their remaining games to finish:

Tottenham fixtures

  • 30 April: Liverpool (a)
  • 6 May: Crystal Palace (h)
  • 13 May: Aston Villa (a)
  • 20 May: Brentford (h)
  • 28 May: Leeds (a)

Liverpool v Tottenham

Premier League, Liverpool, Liverpool news, Liverpool latest news, Liverpool academy, Liverpool update, Liverpool team news, LFC news, LFC latest news, LFC update, LFC academy, LFC U21s, James Balagizi, Jurgen Klopp, FSG, Anfield

Jurgen Klopp's side have underperformed this season, so this Sunday's encounter at Anfield may prove to be decisive in the race for the Europa League, rather than the Champions League, but Liverpool have started to click at the right time.

The Reds have now won their last three Premier League games, most recently emerging 2-1 winners away at West Ham United, and they will have the opportunity to leapfrog Tottenham in the table with a victory this weekend.

Given the improvement from Liverpool in recent weeks, they are likely to emerge as comfortable winners, particularly considering Anfield is not a happy hunting ground for Spurs, having failed to win there since May 2011.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham

Tottenham v Crystal Palace

Cheick-Doucoure-Crystal-Palace-tackling-Harry-Kane

Tottenham will need to be winning games like this to stand any chance of finishing inside the top four, and they are likely to take all three points, especially since Crystal Palace have little to play for at this stage of the season.

The returning Roy Hodgson has overseen the Eagles rise up the league table, now sitting eight points clear of the bottom three, and just three points off the all-important 40-point barrier.

With safety more or less confirmed, Palace have started to falter in recent weeks, drawing against Everton, before losing 2-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out, and they are unlikely to pose too much of a threat to Spurs.

Prediction: Tottenham 3-1 Crystal Palace

Aston Villa v Tottenham

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

Unai Emery has been breaking records as manager of Aston Villa, with his side scoring in all 20 league games since his appointment, which is the most consecutive Premier League matches a team with a new manager has scored in.

At the time of writing, the Villans have won five Premier League home games in a row to put themselves in contention for European qualification, particularly impressing in a resounding 3-0 victory against Newcastle United.

Although there were signs of improvement from Spurs in the second half against Man United, they are unlikely to take anything against such an in-form Villa side.

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-0 Tottenham

Tottenham v Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank.

Although their form has started to dry up in recent weeks, winning just one of their last seven games, Brentford are likely to be very happy with their 2022-23 campaign, and they returned to form in their last match.

The Bees ran out 2-0 winners against a struggling Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge, and they now sit ninth in the Premier League table, although it looks very unlikely they will be able to make a late push for Europe.

Despite the victory in their last match, the Bees should not pose too much of a threat for Tottenham, who must win games like this to keep their European dream alive.

Prediction: Tottenham 3-1 Brentford

Leeds v Tottenham

Leeds bossJavi Gracia

On the final day of the season, Spurs travel to Elland Road to take on a Leeds side who may well be fighting for their lives, given that they are in 16th place, just one point above the bottom three at the time of writing.

Javi Gracia's side have been very disappointing in recent weeks, losing 5-1 at home to Crystal Palace and 6-1 at home to Liverpool, while a 1-1 draw against Leicester City last time out has also done them no favours.

The Lilywhites have won four of their five matches against Leeds since the West Yorkshire club returned to the Premier League, most recently running out 4-3 winners after a late figh back in November.

Both sides have very poor defensive records, with Leeds having conceded the joint-highest amount of any side in the league, therefore it is likely to be a high-scoring game, with Spurs emerging as narrow winners.

Prediction: Leeds 2-3 Tottenham

  • Predicted run-in points: 9/15
  • Predicted total points: 63

Burnley Plotting Move for 20 y/o Forward

Burnley are plotting a move for Ajax forward Sontje Hansen, Football Insider report.

What’s the latest on Burnley and Hansen?

The Clarets have one foot back in the Premier League after an extremely successful first season under Vincent Kompany. The club are currently 11 points clear of second place Sheffield United and 17 clear of third place Middlesbrough after losing just two of their 38 Championship fixtures.

Burnley can seal an immediate return to the top flight over the Easter weekend, and it looks as if Kompany is already planning ahead for the summer transfer window, with news of a new target emerging.

Football Insider shared a story regarding Hansen in the last 24 hours regarding Burnley and Hansen. They revealed that the Clarets are plotting a summer move for Hansen, with Kompany pushing the Burnley board to get a deal over the line as he is keen to add more creativity and goal output to his side.

Who is Hansen?

Hansen is just 20 years of age and has been on the books of Ajax since 2013. He is primarily a right-winger who can play anywhere across the front three and is represented by well-known agency Wasserman, which also looks after five Burnley players.

The Dutch attacker is on course to become a free agent in the summer after making just two appearances for Ajax’s first team. He has impressed in the youth sides, though, making a total of 157 appearances in the academy, scoring 37 times and registering 32 assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Once valued at €6m (£5.3m), Hansen was attracting interest from Manchester City, Juventus, Inter Milan and RB Leipzig back in 2020 but ended up remaining with the Dutch giants.

A move away appears to be a possibility over the coming months, and a switch to Turf Moor could be a wise move by the Claret as the player looks to make an impact at first-team level.

Kompany appears to be a big fan of the forward who stole the show at the U-17 World Cup in 2019 for Holland, winning the Golden Boot at the tournament. Burnley currently have two right-wingers on the books in Manuel Benson and Johann Berg Gudmundsson, with the latter 32 and out of contract next year. Nathan Tella is on loan until the end of the season from Southampton, so perhaps Hansen could come in and provide another versatile option in the final third, possibly alongside Tella should the club target a permanent deal.
