Everton swap deal to get rid of Beto for "lethal" forward may take off soon

Now in the final few weeks of the summer transfer window, Everton could reportedly be offered the chance to sign a 2023 target in a swap deal for struggling forward Beto.

Everton transfer news

It's been a mixed summer at Goodison Park – perhaps even one some will deem a success in the circumstances – but the transfer window is far from over. The future of Jarrad Branthwaite could still change and the Toffees may yet add further reinforcements, despite their ongoing ownership issues. So far, the Merseyside club have welcomed Iliman Ndiaye, Tim Iroegbunam, Jesper Lindstrom and, most recently, Jake O'Brien.

The young central defender expressed his delight after completing a move to Goodison Park, telling Everton's official website: “I’m buzzing and so happy to have signed for Everton. I've been dreaming of this kind of move in the Premier League, with such a historic club. It's a very exciting move for me.

“Everton is a huge club with a lot of history behind it and there's a big future as well. When the transfer window opened there were other clubs in for me but there was only one club I wanted to go to – it was Everton. They’ve shown the faith in me so now it's my turn to show why on the pitch.”

Now, the Toffees could follow the arrival of a defender with the arrival of an attacking reinforcement. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, with talks open, Everton could be offered the chance to sign El Bilal Toure in a swap deal for Beto, as Atalanta look to replace Gianluca Scamacca following his ACL injury, in a swap deal which may soon "take off".

Toure, of course, was reportedly the subject of Everton's £34m bid last summer, before a move failed to materialise. A year on from that bid, they may finally get their man.

"Lethal" Toure's injury record is a concern

Given their lack of new owners, Everton are not in a position to get things wrong in the transfer market and signing a player who has had injury concerns in the last year or so represents a risk they may be better off avoiding.

UD Almeria striker El Bilal Toure.

Toure, though still just 22 years old, missed 32 games courtesy of a hamstring injury last season, 13 games for an unknown muscle injury in the season prior for UD Almeria, and 11 games in the 2021/22 campaign through another hamstring injury at Stade Reims. No matter how "lethal" the forward's finishing is, as described by Atalanta BC News, he can't prove that clinical nature when sidelined.

It's worth noting too, that Dominic Calvert-Lewin's own injury record is far from ideal, so sacrificing Beto in exchange for another unreliable option on the fitness front would be quite the risk from Everton at this stage.

West Ham enquire for £100k-p/w attacker who outscored Antonio last season

West Ham United may have found a new target in their hunt for a fresh face in attack this summer, it has been revealed.

Lopetegui takes charge

West Ham's summer has already been a busy one under new boss Julen Lopetegui. They have shelled out £30m to sign Luis Guilherme from Brazilian outfit Palmeiras, with the teenager penning a five year deal in East London.

The Hammers have also plundered Lopetegui's former side and Premier League rivals Wolves for club captain Max Kilman, who joined the club in a £40m deal and signed a seven year contract, a deal keeping him at West Ham until he turns 34.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be a West Ham United player,” said Kilman. “As soon as I was aware of the interest from the Club, it was an opportunity I was keen to pursue, so I couldn’t be more delighted to be here."

But their frontline still requires attention, and it looks as though that is Tim Steidten's next transfer mission.

West Ham want Premier League striker

Now, one report has claimed that West Ham are eyeing up a move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of the new Premier League season.

As per Football Insider, the Hammers have 'made an enquiry' about the Everton man, with the forward having been 'shortlisted' as a potential option to lead the line at the London Stadium next summer.

Though Everton don't want to sell the striker, he is down to the final 12 months of his £100,000 a week deal at Goodison Park and has "failed to agree terms on a new deal" so far. That may force Sean Dyche's side to cash in on their centre-forward, even though they have cooled their fears over PSR with the imminent sale of Amadou Onana.

And that has "alerted interested clubs" including West Ham and Newcastle United, though the Magpies ended their interest at the end of June.

Ex-Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira was full of praise for the Englishman during one appearance on Sky Sports back in 2023, dubbing him "one of the complete players" in the Premier League. And the striker showed signs of getting back to his best last season under Dyche after an injury plagued spell, finding the net seven times in the Premier League to steer the Toffees clear of relegation.

In the West Ham squad, only Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus managed more, with Tomas Soucek and James Ward-Prowse both grabbing seven goals. Meanwhile, veteran striker Michail Antonio only managed six in a disappointing campaign for the Jamaica international.

Should Lopetegui wish to implement a similar style to predecessor David Moyes at the London Stadium, Calvert-Lewin would be an astute addition given his ability to hold the ball up and bring the likes of Kudus and new signing Guilherme into the game from either flank.

The Portuguese coach is set to formally take charge of United on November 11. Last week, the club announced him as their next head coach following Erik ten Hag's departure from Old Trafford. In the meantime, Ten Hag's assistant, Van Nistelrooy, is managing the team as their interim coach.

Under Van Nistelrooy's tutelage, the Red Devils won their Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City 5-2 but were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday at home. After the clash with the Blues, the Dutchman expressed his desire to stay back and work under Amorim, however, former England and United forward Sheringham believes that it is unlikely that the 39-year-old will keep him on.

WHAT TEDDY SHERINGHAM SAID

Speaking to Flashscore, Sheringham said: "It wouldn’t be a mistake for Ruben Amorim to part ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy. Most managers come in with their staff behind them and with his stock so high he will be able to make his own demands. If he doesn't know Ruud and doesn't know his personality then he won’t have his back. I think when new managers come in it’s time for a fresh start and you don’t want any confusion as to what was at the club before."

Angelo Mathews calls for IPL-style playoff structure in LPL

Colombo captain disappointed to exit tournament after his side had topped the league phase

Colombo Kings topped the league, winning six of their eight games, and yet lost the Lanka Premier League semi-final to a team that had suffered six defeats in the tournament. Perhaps understandably, they feel aggrieved at the tournament’s format. On the day after their tournament exit, Kings captain Angelo Mathews said that although the LPL has been an overwhelmingly positive experience overall, the league would have been better off if it had ditched the traditional semi-final system, and utilised an IPL-style playoff structure. As per the IPL’s rules, the two league-toppers have potentially two attempts to make the final, while teams ranked No. 3 and 4 have a tougher route to the trophy.”After doing so well – winning six out of the eight matches, and then having one bad day and having to go home – it’s really disappointing,” Mathews told ESPNcricinfo. “When you top the table, you should get another go, like with an IPL-style playoffs. The way things are, teams will know that if they win two or three games, they’ll qualify for the semi-final. Then there’s no reason for them to keep going and keep the intensity up. That shouldn’t be the case. I’m sure the organisers will look into it next year.”

Mathews had expressed a preference for a playoffs system even before Sunday’s semi-final, and Dambulla Viiking captain Dasun Shanaka had echoed that sentiment. Viiking finished second on the table.”Not only us, everyone is of the view that when you’re playing eight league games, there should be some advantage to topping the table,” Mathews said. “There should be some cushioning.”Still, it was a great tournament, and we should thank everyone who made it happen, including the government, the forces and the medical teams. Everything went smoothly.”With several largely unknown Sri Lanka cricketers having shone at the tournament, Mathews spoke of the LPL as a learning experience for many.”It was a great tournament, and we found some raw talents coming through. I’m really happy that guys got the opportunity to play with the likes of Andre Russell and Shoaib Malik. Our team had so many younger players and they were fortunate enough to share the dressing room with Russell. They told me personally that it was a fantastic experience. Bowling in the nets to Russell, I could see the guys trying to work out how best they could bowl at him, and also face him.”I’m glad we were able to lock in foreign players like Russell, Laurie Evans, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Qais Ahmad and all these guys. They were fantastic. Even yesterday they said it was a great opportunity for them as well. Sri Lankans are welcoming, so they felt all the love and affection. They gave their best and played their hearts out. They put their thoughts on the table and shared their experience.”

PCB appoints Board of Governors' first female director in Alia Zafar

The PCB will have a female director on the board for the first time in its history, with human resource executive Alia Zafar appointed to the position. The PCB rewrote its constitution last year, revoking the Board of Governors’ (BoG) membership, and reduced the numerical strength of the cricket-playing associations from eight to three in a bid to offset their influence. In the process, it planned to bring in four independent directors to live up to the corporate governance practices.Besides Zafar, the three independent members are Javed Kurieshi, a finance executive, Asim Wajid Jawad, an expert in economics and Arif Saeed, an economist and corporate executive. Kurieshi and Saeed are appointed for three years while Alia and Wajid retain the position for two years. Before the constitutional overhaul, the composition of the BoG included four regional representatives (the top four regional teams from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy) and four representatives of services organisations (the top four departmental teams), and two direct nominees from the patron in chief – the prime minister of Pakistan. Now, an 11-member board will have two direct nominees by the patron, a move that sees power consolidated at the top and stripped from the teams that play domestic competitions. Three members from among the cricket associations will be elected presidents on a rotational basis every three years, while four independent directors, at least one of whom has to be female, will be named by the nomination committee.Until today, the PCB had been functioning on the basis of the old formation, but after appointing the four independent members, all previous members have been released from the Board. The remaining three members – the head of three associations – will be appointed following completion of the election process, according to the PCB.”Following promulgation of the new PCB Constitution in 2019, these distinguished members, on my request, had agreed to continue through the transitional period and provide the PCB management appropriate guidance through their knowledge and insight,” PCB chairman, Ehsan Mani, said. “The fact that these BoG members unanimously approved the appointment of the independent members, which now changes the outlook and composition of the BoG, illustrates their respect for the PCB Constitution 2019 and Pakistan cricket at heart.”However, the PCB will continue to benefit from their experience and understanding, by including them as members on the Cricket Associations’ interim executive committees (IECs), which will be confirmed shortly. The first and the most critical assignment of the IECs will be to supervise the registration of clubs so that cricketing activities can resume at the grassroots level. I welcome the newly-appointed independent members to the BoG, especially Ms Alia Zafar, the first female independent member, which is a giant step forward in enhancing the PCB’s governance structure.”Presently, only six provinces – Balochistan, Central Punjab, South Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Northern – will be eligible to play first-class cricket. Out of six, three will have their heads on the PCB Board on a rotation basis. Domestic cricket in Pakistan has been played among departments and regions for nearly 50 years, starting in the early 1970s, with the departments historically enjoying great influence in Pakistan cricket through the Board of Governors. The new constitution, however, still allows departments to maintain a foothold in cricket as sponsors of the domestic sides. The territorial regions of each of the six cricket associations are based on the bifurcation of each province in the country, and the PCB will fund them with the help of a principal sponsor approved for an initial period of up to five years. The departments, which had so far maintained cricket teams, will, according to the new constitution, “be allowed first right of refusal to be the principle [principal] sponsor of the cricket association and the city cricket association”.ESPNcricinfo understands the PCB had been engaged with departments for sponsorship funding but no department is currently willing to spend money without having a playing role. Nearly every department has shut down their cricket departments and revoked hundreds of contracts, though a handful of prominent players who had full-time jobs have been retained on their payrolls.

Mason Crane commits to Hampshire until end of 2022 season

Mason Crane has extended his contract with Hampshire, and will remain at the Ageas Bowl at least until the end of 2022.Crane, who played his only Test to date at Sydney in the final match of the 2017-18 Ashes, demonstrated his enduring importance to Hampshire in a truncated 2020 season, claiming nine wickets at 22 in this year’s Vitality Blast, as well as 14 wickets at 13.57 in the Bob Willis Trophy.”I’m very happy to commit to a new extension here at Hampshire,” Crane said. “I’m looking forward to what the future brings for us as a team and can’t wait to continue to improve and contribute to the club’s success over the coming years.”Crane, 23, made his first-team debut as an 18-year-old in 2015, and picked up 66 wickets in 34 matches across all formats in his first two seasons.A further 49 wickets in 2017 earned him an England T20I debut against South Africa, ahead of his Ashes call-up, and though a stress fracture of the back interrupted his development in 2018, he returned to action in time to play a key role in Hampshire’s Royal London Cup triumph, as well as their run to a second consecutive final the following summer.”Mason is a key member of our squad and his contributions with the ball this season have been excellent,” Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, said. “We’re delighted with his progress and the fact that he’s committed his future to Hampshire. He will be an important player for us moving forward.”

Liverpool now want "talented" £42m history-maker in long-term VVD solution

With Virgil van Dijk's current Liverpool contract coming to an end this time next year, the Reds reportedly want to sign a long-term replacement in the form of a player who recently made history for his current club.

Liverpool transfer news

There's no need for Liverpool to panic over the short-term future of their captain quite yet. The Dutchman has made it clear on more than one occasion that he is keen to stay put at Anfield, saying recently via The Metro: "I still have a year left on my contract. I am club captain and I have made it clear I am there for the new coach and enthusiastic over the next season.

"Obviously, there will be a lot of changes but I am confident we will make a big success of it. I congratulated him of course and I'm really pleased for him and his family. We spoke about the team and the future, but now my focus is fully on the national team."

It is reportedly among Liverpool's priorities to get a new deal sorted for their star defender, but even with a new deal, they should be thinking about a long-term replacement now that he's 32 years old and not getting any younger. That, of course, is where Piero Hincapie could step in.

According to Christian Martin via El Futbolero, Liverpool now want to sign Hincapie in a deal worth €50m (£42m) this summer. The defender, alongside the rest of his Bayer Leverkusen teammates, impressed many by winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in an invincible season in domestic football. In fact, their only defeat of the entire campaign came against Atalanta in the Europa League final to deny them an incredible invincible treble win.

Nonetheless, becoming the first-ever team to win the Bundesliga unbeaten has its own place in history and a place Hincapie played his part in earning.

"Talented" Hincapie can help fill long-term Liverpool void

Replacing Jurgen Klopp is a tough enough task in its own right, but if Liverpool then have to replace Van Dijk just one year later, they'll have to form quite the plan, which could see Hincapie arrive before crisis mode hits. The Ecuador international is still just 22 years old but has shown more than enough potential to earn such a move in the coming months.

With fewer starts, Hincapie managed to keep up with Liverpool's captain in a number of areas, sparking plenty of promise when it comes to the peak years of his career as a central defender.

Leverkusen will be frustrated if the defender does leave, however, with sporting director Simon Rolfes previously saying via the Bundesliga's official website: "Piero’s signing 18 months ago was an investment in the future, back then he was a talented central defender with really big potential.

"He became a key performer for our Werkself a long time ago, he has shown his international quality in the Bundesliga, in the Champions League and recently at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Piero is one of the key elements in the team who we can count on to help us achieve ambitious targets in the next few years."

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Twila Kilgore, who served as the USWNT's interim coach for 14 matches before Emma Hayes took over the official role, is stepping away from the federation to pursue other opportunities, U.S. Soccer announced on Tuesday.

Kilgore compiled a 10-1-3 record while winning the 2024 W Gold Cup and 2024 SheBeleives Cup in the interim role. After Hayes' arrival, Kilgore stayed on as an assistant through the Olympics, helping the USWNT claim a gold medal.

    WHAT KILGORE AND HAYES SAID

“I am thankful for the opportunities, trust and support I have received from leadership, staff, players, and fans over the past three years,” said Kilgore. “Being a part of this storied program as both an assistant and interim head coach has been both a privilege and rewarding experience. What this group has accomplished during a time of transition is a testament to all involved and I believe an indication of continued success to come. I’m not only leaving with a gold medal run, but also with incredible experiences, meaningful relationships and new ambitions.”

Added Hayes: “Twila stepped into a difficult situation when she took over after the World Cup. She then embraced it with extreme dedication, a love for the U.S. women’s national team program and a passion to help the players be their best selves. I will be forever grateful for her work in the eight months I was still in England after I took this job, and then through the Olympics.

"Her contributions to our team were invaluable. I am a big proponent of opportunities for female coaches, and we need more coaches in the United States like Twila. She is a role model for many other women following in her path and whichever team is her next one, they will be getting an excellent coach and human.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The role of an interim coach can be thankless, but Kilgore should be recognized for helping steady the ship. She took over a USWNT program reeling from a World Cup failure and helped rebuild the program on the fly prior to Hayes' arrival. Several young stars, headlined by Jaedyn Shaw, were introduced to the USWNT under Kilgore's leadership, which helped set up the U.S. for years to come.

Ronaldo's free-kick struggles have been well-documented, with each missed attempt becoming fodder for his detractors. However, the Portuguese superstar decided to take a different approach during the match against Al Feiha, and it paid off handsomely. In the dying moments of the first half, Ronaldo and his teammate Alex Telles lined up over a free kick just outside the opposition's penalty area. What followed was a moment of brilliance that left the Al Feiha defence and goalkeeper Abdulraouf Al-Duqayl stunned.

Instead of his usual routine of taking several steps back before powering the ball with his right foot, Ronaldo opted for a more measured approach. He calmly approached the ball and, rather than unleashing a powerful shot, he delicately clipped it over the defensive wall. The ball sailed past the helpless goalkeeper and into the back of the net, marking Ronaldo's 64th career free-kick goal.
