Better signing than Tel: Arsenal chasing D-Day deal for £60m "nightmare"

We’ve made it to transfer deadline day, and while things are picking up on the pitch, Arsenal are yet to make a single addition to their squad.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been linked to a whole host of exciting attackers this month, from RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko to Juventus’ Dušan Vlahović.

However, in recent days, attention seems to have turned to Bayern Munich’s teenage sensation Mathys Tel.

Mathys Tel

The French phenomenon has been heavily touted for an exit from the Allianz Arena this window, and now that potential transfers to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have dissipated over the weekend, the Gunners have been more heavily mooted to make a move.

However, given his age, the dynamic attacker might struggle to make the immediate impact the North Londoners need this season, so recent news linking the club to one of the best forwards around should delight fans, as should the club be able to pull this move off, it’d be one of the most significant deadline day transfers in their history.

Arsenal target Premier League star

According to a recent report from the Independent, Arsenal have maintained their staunch interest in Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins.

Transfer Focus

The report has revealed that The Gunners ‘have been considering another move’ for the Englishman as their initial offer of around £40m last week ‘left the London club with the understanding that the forward may be available for a certain price.’

However, even though the story claims that the Birmingham outfit are close to PSR limits, the fee required to get the former Brentford ace out of Villa Park stands at around £60m.

It would be an undoubtedly complicated and costly transfer to get over the line this month, but given Watkins immense ability and Arsenal’s acute need for a striker, it may be worth it, especially as he’d be a far better signing for the here and now than Tel.

Why Watkins would be a better signing than Tel

So, the first thing to say is that either player would likely be a great signing for Arsenal and significantly improve the overall quality of their frontline options, but given where the team are today and their ambitions for this season and in the next couple of years, Watkins would undoubtedly be the better signing.

There are a few reasons for this, and the first is the simple fact that this season, the Englishman has been far more effective in front of goal.

For example, in 33 appearances, totalling 2279 minutes, this season, Villa’s “nightmare,” as dubbed by Conor Coady, has scored 11 goals and provided nine assists, which comes out to a goal involvement on average every 1.65 games, or every 113.95 minutes.

In contrast, the Bayern gem has provided just a single assist in 14 appearances, totalling 458 minutes, this season, which does not fill us with a great deal of confidence.

The second reason is that while the 19-year-old prospect has no experience of English football, the Torquay-born monster has bucketloads, working his way up from League Two with Exeter City to the Championship with Brentford and then finally the Premier League and Champions League with the Villans, so he’ll need no time to acclimatise.

Finally, while it’s often advisable to sign younger players who can grow with the team, this might be one of the few times when the opposite is true, as Watkins is clearly at the peak of his powers at the moment and could, therefore, come into the side and instantly fire them to glory either this year or in the next two, which seems unlikely to happen with Tel.

Ultimately, both players would be great additions to the squad, but as things stand, the Villa phenom would undoubtedly be the better signing for Arsenal.

Newcastle reach agreement to sell "brilliant" £60k-p/w ace; one hurdle left

Whilst Newcastle United are yet to act on the incomings front, they have now reportedly reached an agreement to sell one of Eddie Howe’s players who has been moving closer and closer to the exit door for quite some time.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have once again felt the full frustration of profit and sustainability rules this month. With the richest owners in the Premier League, it’s easy to assume that Newcastle’s spending power would be far greater than those around them, but that is not the case. Those at St James’ Park, like others, must sell before they can buy.

Newcastle now stepping up interest in £98k-p/w "monster" instead of Bade

ByDominic Lund Jan 25, 2025

That PSR struggle has resulted in several exit rumours, from the likes of Alexander Isak all the way to Anthony Gordon – two sales which would instantly grant Newcastle some much-needed spending power. Both would be quite the sacrifice, however, and not ones that Newcastle should be quick to make either this month or in the summer transfer window.

Instead, those at St James’ Park have seemingly set their attention on finally showing an out-of-favour forward the door in what should at least give them some breathing room in the market.

According to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, Newcastle have now reached an agreement to sell Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United this month with the one remaining hurdle being the winger’s personal terms with the MLS club. Whilst those talks are ongoing, however, they are expected to reach a conclusion.

It’s a sale which has looked on the cards for some time and now one that Newcastle are finally closer than ever to completing.

Newcastle needed to show Almiron the door

Almiron’s departure is one that Newcastle simply need to get over the line. If they are to put themselves in a position to spend their riches, then keeping hold of players who remain on the fringes of Howe’s strongest side is something that the Tyneside club should avoid every chance they get.

The £60,000-a-week winger’s departure shouldn’t discredit the hard yards that he put in during his time at Newcastle though. Whilst there were times when he seemed destined to fall into a case of what might have been, Almiron more than redeemed himself during an excellent 2022/23 campaign when his goals helped fire the Magpies towards Champions League qualification.

Newcastle United's MiguelAlmironbefore the match

The 30-year-old is also someone who has been at the centre of Howe’s praise up to the very end of his Newcastle career, with the manager telling reporters as relayed by NUFC Feed earlier this week: “I think Miggy’s head has been very, very solidly here. He’s been brilliant in training this week and I’ve seen not one moment where I thought ‘oh, I need to address this or speak to him or have a deeper conversation’.”

Man City could sign Alvarez replacement who’s one of the best in the world

All is well at Manchester City again, following back-to-back Premier League wins, achieving this for the first time since October.

First, they battled to a 2-0 victory over Leicester before, on Saturday, smashing an admittedly accommodating West Ham 4-1 at the Etihad, with Erling Haaland bagging a brace.

Erling Haaland in action for Manchester City

Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola’s side are still down in sixth, on course to score just 68 goals in the Premier League, which would represent the club’s lowest tally for 12 years, having scored, on average, a humongous 96 league goals per season across the last seven campaigns.

So, despite boasting Haaland who, as described by Paul Rowan of the Times, is a ‘goal-scoring robot,’ Man City could certainly do with adding some attacking firepower to their ranks.

Manchester City looking at red hot striker

According to a report by from French publication Foot Mercato over the weekend, Manchester City have made an “early move” as they attempt to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush, claiming the player is “very excited about the [Man City] project”.

Darren Looney of Caught Offside believes the Egyptian forward is valued at €70m, around £58m, although TEAMtalk adds that any potential move is only likely to happen “in the summer” at the earliest.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So who is Marmoush and why is he one of Europe’s hottest properties?

Born in Cairo, the 25-year-old has spent the majority of his senior career in Germany, joining Wolfsburg from Wadi Degla in 2017, loaned out to both St. Pauli and Stuttgart, before joining Eintracht Frankfurt in 2023 on a Bosman.

During his debut season with die Adler, he scored a respectable 17 goals in all competitions, before taking his game to a whole nother stratosphere during this campaign so far.

In 24 appearances this season, Marmoush has scored 18 goals, as well as bagging 12 assists, on target four times in the Europa League, while he’s currently the second top-scorer in the Bundesliga, just one behind Torjägerkanone holder Harry Kane.

As noted by Opta, his tally of 13 hinrunde goals is the joint-second most by any Frankfurt player ahead of the winter pause in Bundesliga history, bettered only by Theofanis Gekas’ tally of 14 in 2010/11.

This led one German football expert and analyst on social media to describe him as “one of the best strikers in the world right now”, hence why Manchester City are so eager to secure his services.

How Omar Marmoush would improve Manchester City

Guardiola himself stated “maybe it was a mistake” to sell Julián Álvarez this summer without replacing him, even if they did receive a rather large £81.5m fee from Atlético Madrid for the Argentine striker.

Julian Alvarez celebrates after scoring for Manchester City vs Fulham.

So, if Marmoush is going to replace Álvarez, how do the pair compare?

As outlined in the table above, Marmoush and Álvarez have very different player profiles, but that may not be a bad thing.

The Egyptian is more of an out-and-out centre-forward, hence why he’s scored more goals, registered more assists and had more shots since the start of last season, while his goals – xG figure of +6.8 is extremely impressive; he’s currently the third-most clinical player across Europe’s top-five leagues this season, behind Premier League duo Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

Meantime, Álvarez’s goals – xG figure of +5.3, since the start of last season, is also very fantastic, even though the Argentine is more of an all-round player, emphasised by the fact he attempted significantly more passes and had vastly more touches than Marmoush during the same time-frame.

So, should this deal go through, it would be fascinating to see how Marmoush lines up alongside Haaland.

Well, considering that, behind the Norwegian, only Phil Foden and Joško Gvardiol have scored four or more goals across all competitions this season, this squad does lack firepower and support for their primary front-man.

Thus, two of the most prolific attackers in Europe linking-up would be a frightening prospect for all of Man City’s rivals.

Liverpool confirmed to be "in the race" to sign "unbelievable" defender

Liverpool are “in the race” to sign an “unbelievable” defender, and talks could be held in the January transfer window, according to journalist Christian Falk.

Liverpool keen on a left-back

Having failed to reach his usual heights so far this season, the Reds are looking at finding a replacement for long-serving left-back Andy Robertson, and they have identified a number of targets. Antonee Robinson and Milos Kerkez are two of the Premier League stars being considered by Arne Slot, in light of their impressive performances in the first half of the season.

Although Robertson is deemed to be an important player, there is a belief that a younger option is required for the future, and Kerkez particularly fits the bill, given that he is just 21 years old.

Two of Slot’s main targets are currently plying their trade in the Premier League, but the manager is also looking at options from further afield, with Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, who will be a free agent in the summer, under consideration.

BILD reporter Falk has now provided an update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Davies, and he has indicated that a move to Anfield is still a real possibility, despite widespread interest from other clubs.

Falk said: “True: Alphonso Davies is open to a potential transfer away from Bayern Munich. He’s not 100% fixed on Manchester United or Real Madrid. I heard that talks with Bayern, at the moment, are on ice until January.

“His agent, Nick Huoseh, will talk with any interested top club in the new year. When Huoseh is on his tour of England, Liverpool could get a meeting with him. It would be a good club for Davies, of course, given they play a style of football that would suit him. Liverpool, naturally, have a chance.

“I think Manchester United and Real Madrid are more concrete by comparison at this point in time. Bayern are also applying pressure to sign him up to a new contract. They’re still hopeful about making this work. So, Liverpool are still in the race, if they want him.”

The “unbelievable” left-back is well-known for his talent going forward, but he has also proven his defensive aptitude at times this season, perhaps making him the perfect long-term replacement for Robertson.

It will seemingly be difficult to win the race for Davies’ signature, given that a number of top clubs are keen, but his availability on a free transfer at the end of the campaign makes him a very attractive proposition.

Perfect for Amorim: Man Utd must regret losing "unbelievable" star for £0

Manchester United’s academy has been a constant source of talent over the last couple of years, handing various managers the opportunity to be successful at Old Trafford.

Within the current first-team, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is undoubtedly the biggest homegrown talent, bursting through the youth system last season and cementing his place under former boss Erik ten Hag.

The 19-year-old star ended up featuring in 24 Premier League matches during the 2023/24 campaign as the Red Devils only notched an eighth-placed finish which led to the Dutchman’s downfall in the North West.

However, for Mainoo, it was an emergence that allowed for a huge moment in his early professional career, subsequently being named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Euro 2024 as England fell at the final hurdle against Spain.

Winger Alejandro Garnacho is another talent who has rapidly secured his place in the first-team at Old Trafford, keeping the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony out of the starting eleven in recent months.

The Argentine has produced some memorable moments over the last couple of years, including his phenomenal bicycle kick in the victory over Everton at Goodison Park back in November last year.

He’s already registered six goals in all competitions this season, leading the way for the Red Devils in the final third since the kickstart of 2024/25.

New boss Ruben Amorim will be hoping that he can continue his excellent form when he joins the club in the next few weeks.

Ruben Amorim’s system at Manchester United

The new boss has obviously joined United with a huge amount of excitement given his record with Sporting Lisbon in the Liga Portugal over the past couple of years.

Amorim has achieved a 71% win rate since his appointment back in 2021, helping his side win the league title last season – leading to his appointment at Old Trafford.

The 39-year-old has deployed a 3-4-3 system in recent times, a real contributing factor to his success in Lisbon, with the same formation likely to be used during his stint in the Premier League.

It could see Lisandro Martínez and new signings Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt star in a back three, providing that defensive solidity that United have often been lacking under Ten Hag’s leadership.

Full-backs Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot could be forced into more of a wing-back role, having more attacking responsibilities whilst also dropping into a five-back system when out of possession.

It could drop huge responsibilities onto the shoulders of the two wide attackers, potentially having to drift into central areas to allow for the aforementioned wing-backs to overlap and provide the width.

Such a system could benefit current captain Bruno Fernandes, who likes to play in a number 10 role rather than in a deeper role or even as a wide playmaker, allowing the Portuguese to reach the levels he’s previously achieved in Manchester.

The two central midfield options have a huge responsibility to break up the opposition’s attack whilst playing key line-breaking passes to create a transition on the counter – something which Amorim has evidently had success with in Portugal.

He has a huge job on his hands as he takes over from Ten Hag, looking to return the club to former glories after a drought of over a decade without a triumph after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement back at the end of the 2012/13 campaign.

However, he must wish that the club had kept hold of one player who would undoubtedly be perfect for him in his preferred 3-4-3 formation.

Former Man Utd ace would be perfect for Amorim

Midfielder Angel Gomes was another talent who emerged out of the Carrington academy setup with high hopes of being a real success in the first-team setup after his time at youth level.

Angel Gomes

Despite his early promise, the now 24-year-old only notched a total of ten first-team appearances at Old Trafford, with none of his Premier League games coming from a starting role.

As a result of his lack of minutes, he departed his boyhood club, joining French side Lille on a free transfer during the summer of 2020 – a move that enabled Gomes to reach the levels many predicted him to as a youngster.

In the four years since his move to Ligue 1, the midfielder has registered a total of 127 appearances in all competitions – leading to an England call-up in recent months under temporary boss Lee Carsley.

Angel Gomes' first England start

Gomes has since made his national team debut, even registering an assist in the 3-1 victory over Finland during the recent international break – showcasing why Carsley made the right call with his surprise inclusion.

When delving into his stats from the ongoing campaign, it’s not a surprise to see him finally being recognised for his ability, with his figures undoubtedly making him an excellent fit for Amorim’s system at United.

The “unbelievable” talent, as described by Statman Dave, has registered 5.4 progressive passes and two progressive carries per 90 so far this season – showcasing his ability to get the ball into forward areas, a trait Amorim loves in his central midfielders.

Gomes has also averaged 1.8 key passes per 90 along with 2.9 passes into the final third, which could’ve handed Garnacho the added ammunition to further improve his already impressive goalscoring tally from the early stages of the campaign.

As a result of his stellar displays in Ligue 1, the former United ace has seen his market value soar, with the 24-year-old now valued at £23.5m as per Transfermarkt.

Given his recent performance levels and his rapid increase in transfer value, it’s clear that United must wish that they presented a more attractive proposal to the midfielder to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer.

He could’ve been a superb partner alongside fellow academy graduate Mainoo at the heart of Amorim’s setup, potentially playing a pivotal role at the heart of the United revival under the 39-year-old at Old Trafford.

Newcastle could unearth their own version of Palmer in "special talent"

Newcastle United have not started the 2024/25 campaign with the driven verve that the fans would have wanted – or that Eddie Howe would have wanted, for that matter.

But there’s not quite just cause for concern, not yet. Howe has cultivated a rich squad of talent on Tyneside, and what he now needs is one of his players to step up like a talismanic beacon of hope.

Sometimes, one player’s brilliance can be enough to guide a team away from the mire, and indeed, if the Magpies want to fly high this season, they might need one of their superstars to emulate, in some fashion, the exploits of Cole Palmer at Chelsea.

Cole Palmer has been Chelsea's hero

Palmer has been a revelation at Stamford Bridge. Still only 22, the England international has enjoyed one of the most emphatic starts to the major stage in far-stretching memory.

Chelsea were nothing special under Mauricio Pochettino’s leadership last year, but still managed to resurrect their fortunes, almost wholly due to Palmer’s brilliance, posting 25 goals and 14 assists for the Blues after signing from Manchester City in a deal worth £42.5m.

He’s already one of the best players in the world, and it’s frightening to think how good the attacking midfielder could become, already ranked among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored and the top 1% for assists claimed per 90, as per FBref.

Asking Newcastle to produce a player of equal proportions is simply negligible: Palmer is a one-of-a-kind player. That said, the Toon do boast some high-class talent of their own in Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, their 2023/24 Player of the Year.

They also have Harvey Barnes, who might prove to be Howe’s own version of Palmer if he makes a few improvements, for he carries similar properties to the Chelsea superstar.

Harvey Barnes could be Howe's own Cole Palmer

The 2023/24 campaign, Barnes’ first as a Magpie, was a difficult one for him, as he was one of the injury-ravaged stars within Howe’s brood whose absence knocked Newcastle’s finely crafted fluency firmly off-kilter.

In July 2023, Newcastle signed Leicester City’s Barnes for a £38m fee, with the winger saying “it’s an attacker’s dream to come into a team like this” upon the move. Sadly, injuries indeed pulled him away from action, and the 26-year-old only started seven Premier League fixtures all term.

Barnes blends directness with skills and speed, and given that he ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored per 90 (FBref), FBref have actually drawn Palmer as one of the Magpie’s most comparable players in Europe’s top five leagues – as well as among those in the Premier League this season.

Harvey Barnes

The likeness isn’t strictly down to pure playing style – though both Palmer and Barnes have an awe-inspiring propensity for weaving inside and wreaking destruction with well-placed strikes.

In fact, Barnes is what you might call a ‘big-game player’, undeterred by the occasion and trusting in his reliable skillset. He’s also consistent, with his past five seasons showcasing the kind of clinical level of which Newcastle could yet reap the rewards.

The past year, on Tyneside, has been a time of individual strife for Barnes. Injuries beget inconsistency. That said, this is a player whose natural-born clinical edge has fostered a fluent attacking instinct that could find its finest football lies ahead, should he maintain fitness levels under Howe’s wing.

Gordon and Isak haven’t been in tip-top shape so far in 2024/25, albeit combining to send Chelsea packing in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, and thus it’s been important that Barnes has staked his claim for a prominent place in Howe’s frontline, notably wowing with a wonder strike against Wolverhampton Wanderers in September.

Barnes has the X factor – what that is, he has it. The one-cap England international has only started five top-flight fixtures so far this term but has surely laid down the terms of contract: he must only be afforded roles from the outset and he will wreak havoc on Newcastle’s opponents.

Last year’s struggles might have felt like a millstone around his neck, but Barnes is growing into his skin once again and could prove to be the clutch-type player for Howe’s side that offers shades of one Cole Palmer.

Okay, okay, he might not hit the same staggering heights as his countryman, already garnering a reputation as the finest player in the lands, but he’s certainly got the gusto and goalscoring instinct to become a major player in the division once again.

Hailed for his “special talent” by analyst Statman Dave, the £80k-per-week ace is a sharpshooter, true and proper, and he’s got all the tools in the kit that could see him rival Gordon for the reputation as the finest wideman in Newcastle.

Palmer is the face of the Premier League, probably, and though Barnes isn’t likely to rival the Stamford Bridge sensation for that tag any time soon, there’s no question that he’s one of the best goalscorers in the division, and if Howe perseveres, manages him properly, he might just become a force to be reckoned with.
