Arsenal in pole to sign Rice partner who’s "one of the best in the world"

Just like that, Arsenal's mini-crisis is over. The Gunners had been pulled from pillar to post over the first two weeks of the new year but it's amazing what some Dubai sun can do for you, isn't it?

Mikel Arteta's men had scored just one goal in their last three outings and tasted defeat in all of them before taking on a dwindling Crystal Palace team.

Do Arsenal still need a striker in the market? Arguably so, but a 5-0 drubbing over Roy Hodgson's men has settled the anxiety around the Emirates Stadium, pumping fresh belief back into their title challenge.

It was just what the doctor ordered, now it's time to attack the window in earnest.

Arsenal's current transfer plans

The fact of the matter is that Arsenal will struggle to sign players this month. There's been little movement on that front during the opening weeks of the window and money is tight, largely due to financial fair play restrictions.

Their foremost target, allegedly anyway, is Ivan Toney who returned to action with a goal against Nottingham Forest on Saturday after sitting out the entirety of the campaign to date having been banned for betting offences.

However, the latest on him is that Brentford reportedly won't accept anything less than their £80m valuation being met. As a result, any forthcoming move will have to wait until the summer.

Movement could be made on a midfielder, although it will depend on the price. Financially challenged Everton have seen £60m Belgium talent Amadou Onana targeted by Arsenal but again that is a difficult price to pay without sales this month. It perhaps explains slightly cheaper links to Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi.

According to reports in Spain, via Football 365, Arsenal have now leapt into pole position to sign the Spanish midfielder with it being stated that he has 'picked' the Gunners as his next club after rejecting interest from Barcelona.

Martin Zubimendi.

Valued at £51m courtesy of a release clause, yet again that move may have to wait until the summer. Still, he'd be worth waiting for. Just imagine the link-up with a certain Declan Rice.

Ray Parlour has claimed that the Gunners’ leading target shares a likeness with the legendary ‘Wrighty’

ByRobbie Walls Jan 19, 2024 How Martin Zubimendi compares to Declan Rice

Rice has been nothing short of outstanding since moving to the Emirates in a mega £105m switch. Late goals against Luton Town and Manchester United have seen him go down a hero already and if such an expensive transfer could ever be seen as a bargain, the former West Ham skipper has ensured that.

However, he is lacking a partner at the moment to really elevate his game. Thomas Partey has spent the vast majority of the campaign on the treatment table, totally redundant in Arsenal's title challenge while Kai Havertz has struggled to acclimatise in that 'left 8' role that Granit Xhaka made his own last season.

It took until November for the German to finally score from open play and even if he did then bag four goals in quick succession, still doesn't look totally settled.

As a result, Zubimendi could be some much-needed added steel and glue in the middle of the park for Arsenal.

Described as one of "the best midfielders in the world" alongside Rodri by Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, the Sociedad sensation could be the man who supercharges Rice and lets him play slightly further forward.

Zubimendi is a defensive midfielder by trade and would offer some added protection. Just look at how he compares to Arsenal's record signing.

So, while Rice is evidently a bigger all-round package, what this shows is how beautifully well the two players complement each other.

Here we're talking about Zubimendi being the sitter while Rice is given the freedom to play in a more advanced role. This would suit him perfectly, being the more creative of the two. The Englishman plays more key passes, registers a higher number of shot-creating actions and is more progressive.

Declan Rice

Arsenal's midfield target, however, could reign supreme in that deeper position, making more ball recoveries and winning more aerials, while he's not a great deal far behind Rice when it comes to tackling metrics.

All season long Arteta has craved the ideal partner to supercharge Rice; this could well be the move to ensure that happens.

Rodgers could land Hart upgrade as Celtic eye swoop for £2.1m titan

The January transfer window has now been open for over two weeks and Celtic appear set to enjoy a busy couple of weeks as they prepare to make several new signings.

Football Insider recently reported that the Scottish giants would like to end the month with four new players to bolster their current playing squad.

They are closing in on a £2.8m deal to sign Rapid Wien forward Nicolas Kuhn as the first of those four additions to improve the depth on the wing.

The Bhoys are also in the market to land a left-back, a centre-forward, and a new goalkeeper to provide Brendan Rodgers with the best chance of having a successful second half of the campaign.

Celtic's search for a new goalkeeper

A new number one is on the agenda for the Northern Irish head coach this month and the Hoops have now been linked with a swoop for a young stopper.

According to the Dr. Football Podcast in Iceland, Celtic are interested in a deal to sign Elfsborg goalkeeper Hákon Valdimarsson before the end of the window.

They state that the Scottish side are one of a number of teams keen on the talented young shot-stopper, who they describe as being 'highly rated'.

Iceland goalkeeperValdimarsson.

Anderlecht and Gent are two of the other clubs looking at a possible deal for the Iceland international but they are not prepared to match the asking price at this time.

Elfsborg are said to want a fee in the region of €2.5m (£2.1m) and have already rejected one offer from Belgian side Gent for an unknown fee.

It remains unclear if the Hoops are able or willing to pay around £2.1m to sign Valdimarsson or if it is a target that may have to wait until the summer transfer window.

Current Celtic number one Joe Hart is out of contract at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether or not either party are willing to extend his stay at Parkhead.

The club's eagerness to sign another goalkeeper suggests that they are looking to the future, whether that means they want a number one immediately or the future remains to be seen, beyond the former England international.

Hart's Celtic career in numbers

Celtic signed Hart on a permanent deal from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the 2021/22 campaign during Ange Postecoglou's first season in charge.

The former Manchester City star enjoyed a terrific debut campaign in Scottish football as he hit the ground running with a string of fantastic performances in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

He played 35 of the club's 38 top-flight matches in his first season and kept an eye-catching 19 clean sheets to go along with a save success rate of 73%.

This shows that opposition teams found it hard to get past Celtic's defence and the English titan as they romped their way to the league title.

However, his save success rate dropped to 65% throughout the 2022/23 Premiership campaign and is currently at 67% this season under Rodgers, which shows that the veteran shot-stopper's form has declined since his debut year in Scotland.

As you can see in the table above, Hart has been a poor performer in Europe for Celtic with his struggles in several key areas of goalkeeping.

He underperformed as a shot-stopper in comparison to the post-shot xG value of the efforts on his goal, which means that the experienced dud let in far more than the average goalkeeper would be expected to.

Hart also ranked lowly as a sweeper and when it came to collecting crosses, which also meant that he did not take the pressure off his defence very often.

Why Valdimarsson could be an upgrade on Hart

Celtic could land a big upgrade on the former England international by securing a £2.1m deal to sign Valdimarsson from Elfsborg before the end of the window.

He has caught the eye with his sublime performances in Sweden since the start of the 2022 season and his displays for Elfsborg suggest that the potential is there for him to offer more for the Hoops than Hart currently does.

During the 2023 campaign, Valdimarsson started 29 Allsvenskan matches for his side and enjoyed a superb save success rate of 77% to go along with 13 clean sheets, which suggests that the quality is there for him to keep out far more shots than Celtic's current stopper.

Elfsborg's young titan showcased his quality on the international stage for Iceland earlier this term with an impressive display against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes in a European Championship qualifier, which suggests that he can step up and perform against top-quality opposition.

The 22-year-old colossus, who was hailed as having "great potential" by manager Jimmy Thelin, also played 14 top-flight games throughout the 2022 season and saved 73% of the shots on his goal to earn himself four clean sheets.

He has also been a proactive goalkeeper who can come off his line to help out his defence with 1.0 successful run-outs per game in 2023 across his 29 league outings.

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Meanwhile, Hart has completed 0.3 successful run-outs per match across all three of his Premiership seasons for Celtic to date, which suggests that he does not provide as much relief for his backline when balls are played over the top or down the sides of the centre-backs into the space between them and the goalkeeper.

Therefore, Valdimarrson could arrive at Parkhead as a big upgrade on the current Hoops number one if he can translate his performances in Sweden over to Scottish football, which his exceptional display against Portugal suggests he has the quality to do.

At the age of 22, he could also be a superb signing for the future as the Elfsborg star is a staggering 14 years younger than Hart and has plenty of time left ahead of him to be Rodgers' long-term shot-stopper.

Farke could forget about Gnonto in Leeds swoop for £33k-p/w "top player"

After convincingly beating automatic promotion rivals Ipswich Town 4-0 just before Christmas, Leeds United crashed back down to reality away at Preston North End in their next Championship encounter, with the Whites succumbing to a 2-1 defeat late on at Deepdale.

Daniel Farke's men weren't helped by Illan Meslier in goal, the Leeds shot-stopper lashing out at a Preston man meaning the second-tier giants played the majority of the second 45 minutes with ten men.

Leeds weren't at their potent best going forward either in the contest, way off the standards set in the demolition job of the Tractor Boys previously – only mustering up two shots on target on an off-day for the likes of Joel Piroe and Georginio Rutter.

Farke could, therefore, attempt to sign this tricky winger in January to further help out the forwards at Elland Road and share the goal-load away from heavily relying on Crysencio Summerville to conjure up moments of magic to get his team out of many sticky situations.

This signing could also soften the blow of Wilfried Gnonto's expected departure from West Yorkshire when the transfer window reopens, this transfer into the building an upgrade on the diminutive Italian attacker.

Leeds transfer latest – Ryan Kent

Last month, TEAMTalk reported on the possibility that Ryan Kent's current club Fenerbahce would be open to loaning the ex-Rangers man out in January – the 27-year-old winger failing to acclimatise to his new surroundings in Turkey after joining on a free transfer.

Frenzied interest in Kent's services from a number of suitors could be forthcoming therefore, being able to land the English attacker on a short-term basis to positively enhance your team a no-brainer move to attempt to pull off.

Leeds and AFC Bournemouth were named as interested parties, according to the report, the Whites hopeful of jumping to the front of the queue owing to Gnonto potentially leaving.

Football Insider have recently reported that Farke's men are open to selling Gnonto now, after batting away interest in their number 29 from Everton in the summer.

Signing Kent would appease any Leeds masses disappointed by Gnonto leaving immediately, Leeds hopeful of getting the best out of the left winger again even after a torrid time in Turkey to date.

Ryan Kent's style of play

Kent's relentless focus on venturing forward with pace and trickery would fit Farke's side down to a tee, Leeds routinely blitzing opponents with their gung-ho approach when on song.

Gnonto's effectiveness has taken a back-seat this season, however ,when it comes to helping his teammates score goals for fun, only helping himself to one goal and one assist from 18 appearances.

Kent has also been going through a difficult spell in his career in terms of goal output – the 27-year-old only managing one goal and two assists from 15 appearances for Fenerbahce this campaign – but the attacker would be a different beast altogether in the Championship if Farke puts an arm around the misfiring winger on his arrival to West Yorkshire and believes in him.

At the peak of his powers playing in Scotland, the slick £33k-per-week forward – as per Capology – was a creative machine who had a killer knack of finding the back of the net also – assisting ten goals in his final full season at Ibrox, amassing 33 goals scored and 56 assists during a long-standing affinity with Rangers which was then severed.

His time with Rangers even saw talkSPORT pundit and ex-Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O'Hara claim that Kent should be playing in the Premier League instead of the Scottish Premiership, labelling the dynamic attacker as a "top player".

With Gnonto – who only boasts 17 goals and 15 assists in his senior career to date during his time at Elland Road and for FC Zurich – snapping up a far more experienced and proven asset like Kent could well see Farke secure an upgrade on the young Italian.

Leeds could well be the destination that re-energises the ex-Liverpool man's stuttering career this January, bolstering the squad with another impactful presence who would go toe-to-toe with Dan James on his arrival and enable Gnonto's exit to be simply shrugged off and forgotten about.

Warner, Liton lift Sylhet Sixers off bottom place

How the game played outDesperate to dig his side out of the BPL cellar, Sylhet Sixers captain David Warner showed he was willing to resort to any means necessary to get his side a victory. Just 24 hours after he was bowled for a duck in match where the Sixers subsided for 68, Warner pulled out all the stops. Howe could unleash "quality" Newcastle gem by benching 4/10 dud

Newcastle United’s most important game of the season takes place tonight as the Magpies could become the second English team to fall out of the Champions League with a defeat at home to AC Milan, following in Manchester United’s footsteps.

To qualify for the knockout phase, Eddie Howe’s side must beat the Rossoneri and hope Borussia Dortmund can do a number on Paris Saint-Germain at the Westfalenstadion. However, Newcastle couldn't be coming into the game on a worse run of form, having lost heavily to both Everton and Tottenham Hotspur over the past week.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Nevertheless, Howe could bolster his team tonight by making one change in particular to the starting lineup to ensure the Geordie outfit complete their side of the bargain.

Tino Livramento’s stats this season

Ever since Dan Burn suffered a back injury during a 1-0 win against Arsenal back in November, Howe has put full trust in Tino Livramento to make the left-back berth his own which had been going swimmingly well.

Prior to Burn’s injury, the £40m summer signing had started merely one game all season which came in an impressive 1-0 home victory against Manchester City in the EFL Cup. Now, the 21-year-old has started six of Newcastle’s last seven games in all competitions.

The ex-Southampton defender certainly impressed in Burn’s absence, playing out of position from his preferred right-back spot. Former Celtic head coach Neil Lennon even admitted that Livramento has been “outstanding” every time he watches him.

However, Livramento’s superb string of performances came to a halt away at Spurs on Sunday. The young fullback was handed a 4/10 match rating by The Shields Gazette as the Magpies were trounced in London.

During the game, Livramento lost possession of the ball five times, won merely 25% of his total duels, was dribbled past twice and failed to create a single opportunity for his team before being taken off with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Livramento’s poor display may have earned him a spot on the bench for tonight’s crucial European clash and one player in particular will be champing at the bit to take his place.

Lewis Hall’s stats this season

Lewis Hall joined his boyhood club during the summer transfer window for a whopping £28m from Chelsea despite making just 12 appearances for the Blues across the last two seasons and was handed a £7k-per-week contract at St. James' Park.

Nonetheless, Hall had proved his ability for the London club and was even labelled a “quality” player by football scout Jacek Kulig after making his debut for Chelsea almost two years ago.

Since joining Newcastle, the teenager has made only four starts, although half of these came in the League Cup. His last start for the Magpies was in the 2-0 defeat away at Bournemouth.

The 19-year-old was taken off at half-time for Livramento when the game was still goalless, with Howe explaining after the match that the reason was solely due to his lack of match fitness.

Regardless, Hall is still putting up a good fight statistically when compared to Livramento this season.

Furthermore, Livramento can play on both sides of the centre-backs, meaning there is also the possibility that Howe decides to bench Kieran Trippier who picked up a booking against Spurs at the weekend, leaving him suspended for Newcastle’s home bout versus Fulham.

Howe could potentially drop Trippier, who struggled over the past two games, especially during a 3-0 defeat against Everton, and put Livramento at right-back, with Hall being handed the nod on the left.

Anyhow, Hall is a superb player and will eventually start knocking on the manager’s door to get more minutes under his belt. Tonight could be the perfect opportunity for Howe to test out his new fullback pairing ahead of Fulham on Saturday.

Man Utd have a homegrown Antony replacement in 16 y/o "wizard"

Manchester United responded to two dire 3-0 defeats in a row by winning away at Fulham last time out in the Premier League, Scott McTominay – who now has three goals from central midfield in the division to date – scoring again to drag the Red Devils over the line to a 1-0 win at Craven Cottage.

It was a much-needed win to relieve some of the immediate pressure on Erik ten Hag's shoulders as manager, who could well still be on borrowed time in the hot seat at Old Trafford despite this victory in west London.

Scott McTominay

Whilst McTominay has stepped up to the mark recently, Man United dud Antony continues to show no signs of improving with the 23-year-old still yet to register a single goal contribution to help his faltering side this campaign.

Thankfully for the Red Devils, they could have an exciting winger developing in their youth set-up that fits the bill of what Antony was meant to provide – young Shea Lacey turning defenders inside out regularly at U18 level.

He could well be the perfect long-term replacement for Antony with the Brazilian winger sliding further down the pecking order, Ten Hag unafraid to give youth an opportunity to impress off the bench and so he could well accommodate Lacey into his plans.

Antony's numbers this season

The excessive £82m transfer fee that saw Man United land Antony last year has worked against the Red Devils and the former Ajax man since the move was confirmed, the 23-year-old having to perform out of his skin arguably to justify such an inflated price tag.

It's increased the disappointment surrounding his performances to date, the transfer at this point feeling like a gigantic waste of time with the Brazilian rarely showing even flickers of his best.

Man United's number 21 has only amassed eight goals and three assists from 55 appearances, an unsatisfactory return after the world was expected of him when leaving the Eredivisie behind.

Antony couldn't even seize a rare first-team start with any impetus against Fulham, delivering another sub-par performance before being substituted off in the 63rd minute – the once tricky Ajax winger ineffective throughout, successful in only one of his four dribbled attempts in the lunchtime kick-off per Sofascore.

antony-premier-league-man-united

The Red Devils will hope that Lacey coming through the Academy can be the explosive talent they desire, the current England U17 international tipped for long-term success after promising beginnings in Manchester.

Shea Lacey's numbers this season

Labelled as a "wizard" for his on-the-ball ability by Daily Mail football journalist Chris Wheeler, Lacey is standing out in his age bracket with his tremendous displays down the channels.

He has two goals and three assists from five games in U18 Premier League, helping himself to two goals and an assist in just one contest versus a youthful Newcastle United side.

Wearing the number seven shirt in this one – an iconic number in the senior side at Old Trafford with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona and David Beckham all wearing the fabled seven jersey – his movement on the ball and awareness to shrug opponents off with skill wasn't too dissimilar from these Red Devils greats at their prime, confidence oozing out of the youngster.

The 16-year-old was a constant thorn in the side for the Magpies, twisting and turning opponents effortlessly with the end product to match. Such qualities, including the ability to pop up with a regular goal and create chances is something Antony has struggled with. It's also perhaps a reason for Rasmus Hojlund's tricky start at Old Trafford.

The Norwegian is yet to score in the Premier League, although does boast three Champions League strikes. However, he would surely love a player with the unpredictable yet quality nature of Lacey in the years to come. Both are raw, young and possess enormous potential.

That said, for now, Man United will be keen for Lacey to continue at his current rate with the U18s, with Ten Hag surely tempted further down the line to test him in some first-team games when the time is right.

Everton’s 64-touch "monster" dominated alongside DCL against West Ham

Everton secured a 1-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday afternoon in a tightly contested Premier League affair at the London Stadium.

The Toffees defended admirably throughout, restricting the Hammers to an xG total of 0.59 by nullifying the Hammers attacking quartet of Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Paqueta, and Michail Antonio.

Using their solid defensive work as a platform to counter-attack in devastating style, Everton opened the scoring through Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 51st minute and held on from there to secure their third three points of the season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin set the tone against West Ham

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was once one of the brightest English strikers to grace the Premier League but an injury-ravaged spell had prevented him from becoming a consistent goalscorer for Everton.

This season, however, the Englishman is beginning to rediscover the form that saw him score 21 goals in the 2020/21 campaign having netted in the crucial victory over Brentford and disappointing defeat against Luton Town.

Previously described by former manager Carlo Ancelotti as a "top striker", Calvert-Lewin showcased the qualities that earned him that praise by how he led the line against the Hammers.

dominic-calvert-lewin-everton-beto-jack-harrison-dyche-luton-bournemouth

He was imperious as a physical presence, bullying the host's defensive duo of Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd, evidenced by how he won six of his nine aerial duels as well as three of his five ground duels, as per Sofascore.

The 26-year-old titan was also exceptional in possession, holding up the ball admirably and bringing his teammates into play, creating one big chance, successfully completing two of his three dribbles and making one key pass.

Calvert-Lewin's performance was, quite simply, a sign that he is returning to his magnificent best with Dyche lavishing on him for how he led the line, saying: "He's getting fitter and sharper".

While Calvert-Lewin was commended after scoring his 50th Premier League goal, Jarrad Branthwaite was praised for his magnificent display, with the youngster continuing to go from strength to strength for Everton.

Jarrad Branthwaite was dominant for Everton

Branthwaite was absolutely phenomenal against West Ham and was showered with praise after helping his side keep a crucial clean sheet.

The youngster played a pivotal role in the goal of the game, stepping out of defence to muscle off Antonio and win possession back. He then had the presence of mind to slide the ball through to Jack Harrison, who assisted Calvert-Lewin.

While the left-footed defender showcased his ball-playing abilities by making 64 touches and completing 72% of his passes, many of which were long passes forward to relieve pressure, as per Sofascore, he demonstrated his dominance out of possession, putting in a similarly imperious performance to Calvert-Lewin physically.

The 21-year-old, who was lauded as a monster by one Everton podcaster, won three of his four aerials, two of his four ground duels and made 10 clearances.

He was near impossible to beat in every physical battle posed to him, making two interceptions, two tackles, and blocking one shot as he provided his side with the platform defensively to go and grab an important victory.

This performance from Branthwaite was just the latest in a string of several that have alerted some top clubs to his signature.

However, Everton should not think about what may lie ahead in his future and, instead, enjoy his performances in the here and now as he is a talented young defender who is contributing to positive results on the pitch.

Que sina! Botafogo perde para o Fortaleza e aumenta seu jejum no BR

MatériaMais Notícias

A má fase continua a rondar o Botafogo.

VEJA A TABELA E A CLASSIFICAÇÃO DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

LONGE DO PONTO CERTO

CHAMUSCA ACENDE O ÂNIMO DO FORTALEZA

A estrela do técnico Marcelo Chamusca acabou acendendo o Fortaleza no jogo.
