When Will Arsenal Sign Declan Rice? Hammers Ace Set To Move

West Ham United's captain Declan Rice has been the talk of the transfer window so far, and with so many twists and turns surrounding his future, Football FanCast is here to keep you informed on all the latest updates.

What's the latest on Rice?

After two failed bids, Arsenal's third offer worth £105m has been accepted by the Hammers.

Talks will continue over the structure of the deal, but by all accounts, Mikel Arteta should have his man.

The Gunners have been working tirelessly to reach an agreement for Rice and have faced competition for his signature throughout. The highly sought-after midfielder was subject to a £90m bid from treble winners Manchester City, but that effort was knocked back.

The Citizens then withdrew from the race after deciding against matching Arsenal's colossal bid, which would've come as a relief to Arteta and the Gunners board.

Now, after a long drawn-out transfer saga, Rice is closing in on a move to the Premier League runners-up, but his medical won't take place until the structure of the payment is agreed with the Irons.

Who else was interested?

Apart from the aforementioned Arsenal and Manchester City, Manchester United had been touted as potential suitors.

According to Football Insider, the Red Devils were prepared to offer £45m plus two players – one of whom was believed to be captain Harry Maguire – for Rice.

But that deal never transpired and Erik ten Hag's side seem focused on landing Chelsea's Mason Mount.

Chelsea had registered their interest in the 43-cap England international but appeared more intent on trying to bring Moisés Caicedo to Stamford Bridge. The Guardian further added that the prospect of losing Mount had not helped their chances of signing his best friend.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were another club mooted as a potential destination for Rice but they withdrew their interest after the deal became more and more expensive.

Who did Rice want to join?

Rice's preferred destination always appeared to be Arsenal. The Guardian reported earlier this month that he would like to remain in London and be close to his family after becoming a father last year.

He had held talks with Pep Guardiola, and there was a feeling City could potentially hijack a deal, particularly after İlkay Gündoğan departure, but there was no indication to suggest his head had turned away from a move to the Gunners.

He admires Arteta's playing style and recognises he would be a regular starter at the Emirates.

Wolves could sign "dominant" PL ace this summer

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with a Premier League star, as the transfer window opens to commence a busy summer at Molineux.

Julen Lopetegui will have to overcome financial hurdles due to the club’s FFP woes, however the Spaniard can remain hopeful in securing upgrades to his side despite potential constraints.

The latest link could provide Wolves with a firm upgrade in defence, as well as a replacement to a star linked to a move away.

What’s the latest on Harry Maguire to Wolves?

As reported by journalist Ben Jacobs (via The United Stand [41.03]), Wolves could emerge as a potential new club for Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire.

Jacobs claimed that the Midlands side could be a “dark horse” in the transfer saga regarding the 30-year-old’s future, with United keen to cash in.

Speaking to The United Stand, Jacobs noted that the potential sale of Max Kilman this summer could “open the possibility” of Wolves going for Maguire.

A FootballTransfers report from earlier this month stated that United would want a fee in the region of £35m for the defender.

What could Harry Maguire offer to Wolves?

Having been previously lauded as “dominant” by Red Devils boss Erik Ten Hag, Maguire has the capabilities to be one of the league’s top centre-backs as we have seen previously in his career.

At Old Trafford, the Englishman has hit a patch of stagnancy and is seemingly unable to escape a vicious cycle of poor performances and low confidence on the pitch.

On his day, the 30-year-old can pose as an assured and “dictating” figure at the heart of defence, as praised by Ten Hag this season.

The introduction of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane all but ended Maguire’s stay as one of United’s first-choice central defenders, and could now seek a new adventure away from Manchester to reinvent his career.

Wolves could be a perfect fit for the Englishman, particularly if Kilman is to depart amidst reports linking the centre-back to Tottenham Hotspur, with the United captain a shout for a strong, reliable and vastly experienced replacement.

Wolves centre-back Max Kilman.

The two are similar in their abilities at the back and are compared to each other based on statistics gathered over the past year via FBref.

The 6 foot 4 commander provides better aerial coverage than Kilman, averaging 3.01 aerials won per 90 to the Wolves ace’s 2.34 as well as making an average of 1.03 tackles to his 0.98 per 90, showing that he could fill the gap potentially left by the Spurs target at Molineux.

Despite making just eight starts in the league this season, Maguire has maintained an impressive average rate of passing with percentages higher than Kilman, as per Sofascore.

The £200k-per-week England international has maintained an average passing accuracy of 85% per game, with a stellar 94% accuracy rate of passes in his own half, with the 26-year-old averaging 83% per game and 90% accuracy in his own half.

Lopetegui could capture the signature of an established Premier League defender, as well as a centre-back experienced at international level with 55 caps for his country, proving that he is a trusted option in defence.

With his future still uncertain at Old Trafford, only time will tell if the United captain opts for a move away from the Red Devils.

Chelsea Considering Swoop For £76k-p/w Commander

An update has emerged on Chelsea and their ongoing plans to reshape their playing squad after they finished in the bottom half of the Premier League in the season just gone.

What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?

Mauricio Pochettino is in the market to bolster his options in the middle of the park and Sandro Tonali has emerged as a potential option instead of Brighton & Hove Albion's Moises Caicedo.

The Athletic's David Ornstein has reported that the Blues have had an offer of £60m turned down for the Ecuador international and that they are now considering a number of alternatives, including the AC Milan commander.

This is alongside their pursuit of a deal for Villarreal forward Nicolas Jackson, who is seemingly closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge from the Spanish side after agreeing terms with the Blues. The reporter tweeted:

"Chelsea have agreed terms with Nicolas Jackson + intend to strike deal with Villarreal. €35m clause if needed. 21yo striker has committed. + #BHAFC rejected £60m #CFC Caicedo bid 2wks ago – Lavia, Kone, Tonali, Barella among alternatives."

Ornstein's article, which is attached to his Tweet, does not reveal how much it would take to snatch Tonali away from the Champions League semi-finalists but the Italian international is on the club's list of targets this summer.

Who is Sandro Tonali?

The 23-year-old Milan ace is a defensive midfielder who has the quality to make an impact at both ends of the pitch with his defensive awareness and creativity.

Whilst it remains to be seen how much the Italian giants would demand for his services, Football Transfers estimates his market value to be in the region of €68m (£58m), which is significantly more than the €39.7m (£34m) he was valued at in June 2022.

AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali.

This shows that the young maestro, who scout Jacek Kulig hailed as "Il Comandante", has been building his value over the last 12 months and that Chelsea would be bringing in a player who is on the up, rather than a depreciating asset with no sell-on potential.

Tonali enjoyed a terrific 2022/23 campaign in the Serie A with Milan. The Italian commander, who was once lauded as “extraordinary” by former Brescia manager Eugenio Corini, averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.21 across 34 appearances in the division and made 2.6 tackles and interceptions and 1.8 key passes per match.

Only Thiago Silva and N'Golo Kante (both with a score of 7.26) averaged a higher rating in the Premier League and only Kante (1.9) created more chances per game than the £76k-per-week dynamo.

Chelsea Eye Swoop for £40m Monster This Summer

Chelsea are eyeing up a move for striker Tammy Abraham this summer as incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino aims to bolster his attacking options ahead of next season.

What’s the latest on Tammy Abraham to Chelsea?

According to reports in Spain, Chelsea are looking at re-signing former striker Abraham from AS Roma, with the player expected to be available for around £40m as the Blues look to activate a buy-back clause.

They could face stiff competition from a host of Premier League sides however, with Manchester United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur all keen on luring the Englishman back to England.

Signing Abraham could give the new boss a licence to ditch Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before the new season.

Does Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have a future at Chelsea?

The 33-year-old has a contract until 2024 with the London side, however, he could well be on the move this summer after a woeful campaign.

The £160k-per-week flop only joined the club from Barcelona last year, yet he has failed to live up to expectations, playing just 22 matches across all competitions and scoring only three times as Chelsea have struggled in front of goal this season.

The Blues have netted just 30 times in the Premier League thus far, with only three teams scoring less and Pochettino will be desperate to sign someone who can get them firing again. Abraham may be the ideal choice.

He knows Chelsea well, scoring 30 goals in 82 appearances before making the move to Serie A side Roma back in 2021, and it’s fair to say he has enjoyed his time in Italy.

Not only did he help end Roma’s 14-year trophy drought by claiming victory in the Europa Conference League last term, but the 25-year-old has also been rather prolific under Jose Mourinho, finding the back of the net 36 times in just over 100 appearances, and it could be a big loss if he does move on.

Abraham claimed that Mourinho passed on words of encouragement before his debut campaign, telling him to become a “monster” and he has certainly become that on the continent.

Tammy Abraham for AS Roma

His numbers have dipped during 2022/23 compared to last season, scoring nine times, yet his Premier League experience could be key for Pochettino as he aims to assemble a side which should really be challenging for major honours across the board.

The Englishman has scored 26 goals in the top flight, and he would be inserted into a team containing Raheem Sterling, Enzo Fernandez and Mykhaylo Mudryk, suggesting plenty of chances will be created for him.

New Zealand take charge of Test with 412-run lead

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:01

By The Numbers – Taylor and Watling’s day out

Ross Taylor and BJ Watling took 299 and 172 deliveries respectively to rack up 173* and 107 – their second hundreds against Zimbabwe – and build an advantage New Zealand may have considered unassailable. Tim Southee and Trent Boult took four Zimbabwean wickets for 10 runs in the space of 18 balls, and likely ensure the 412-run lead is more than enough.Zimbabwe’s top order were blown away by swing and teetered on 17 for 4. Given their first-innings collapse, a three-day finish seemed imminent. But Craig Ervine equalled his highest Test score – 49 – and formed partnerships with Sikandar Raza and Graeme Cremer to allow the hosts to live to fight another day.Taking the match into the fourth day was Zimbabwe’s second small success after they removed nightwatchman Ish Sodhi in the second over of the day. They did not see the back of another New Zealand batsman until 15 minutes after tea, when Watling dragged Raza to deep square leg. By then, the New Zealand wicketkeeper had a century, Taylor had 173* and their partnership – a chanceless stand headlined by crisp cuts, powerful pulls and careful strike rotation – had reached 253.On its own, it was worth 89 runs more than Zimbabwe’s first-innings total. Combined with the 79-run opening stand, the 156 runs Tom Latham and Kane Williamson added for the second wicket, and other small contributions, it put the match beyond Zimbabwe, who were kept under the Bulawayo sun for 166.5 overs.Their second new ball was under six overs old when the day began and Donald Tiripano and Michael Chinouya started promisingly with it. Both showed marked improvement from their second-day performances and made the batsmen play at more deliveries by tightening their lines. Chinouya reaped some reward when Sodhi played an uncertain drive and edged to substitute wicketkeeper Brian Chari.Sensing an opportunity to get into New Zealand’s lower order, the pair tried the short ball but without the pace or the discipline to back it up, it was wasted. Too often, they offered their deliveries with width, allowing the batsmen to cut. Other balls were misdirected and invited the pull, a shot both Taylor and Watling played comfortably. Their ease against the short ball only highlighted Zimbabwe’s deficiencies when faced with the same. With the seamers struggling, Graeme Cremer brought himself on. He did not manage as much of the turn and bounce he got on the second day, but Taylor and Watling were still cautious against him.It was only towards the end of the first session, when heavy legs caused Zimbabwe’s fielders to make several fumbles, that the pair upped the scoring rate. Taylor took on the more aggressive role and showed his authority against Cremer while Watling hung back and rotated strike. By lunch, the lead was over 250 and the pair well settled. They returned after the break to deal for another careful five overs before opening up. The next 15 overs brought 61 runs at over four runs per over. In that time, Taylor brought up his century with a signature square cut. His second fifty only took him 83 balls, compared to his first for which he faced 108.Watling went into the tea break on 95 and brought up his century four overs later with a top-edge off a pull – the shot he had played so comfortably through his innings. The pair were given some freedom to bat on but managed only one more shot in anger before Watling holed out and Williamson called his men in, leaving Zimbabwe with a tough task to make New Zealand bat again. They decided to take on the challenge head on and played their strongest hand by promoting their most experienced batsman Hamilton Masakadza to open. Brian Chari, who does not keep regularly and spent five sessions behind the stumps doing the job, was given some time to recover but he did not have too long.Masakadza drove the first ball he faced for four but then edged the third, which moved away from him, to first slip to end a disappointing Test for him. Chari was in at No.3 and handled the first five balls he faced before a Boult inswinger snuck through the bat-pad gap and took out his off stump.Chamu Chibhabha also failed to handle Boult’s movement and poked at one that moved away to give Taylor a second catch, low and to his left. With his next ball, Boult angled it in to Prince Masvaure, who was hit on the pad in front of middle stump.Sikandar Raza sliced the hat-trick ball through the covers for four and settled Zimbabwe’s nerves somewhat. Raza and Ervine took a totally different approach to what may be expected from a side on the back foot, and played an aggressive range of strokes. They scored at 7.8 runs to the over and swiped their bats at anything, be it full or short. Raza fell on his sword when he top-edged a short ball and walked off before the catch was taken. With news that Regis Chakbva and Sean Williams, neither of whom fielded at all because of illness, will be available to bat on the fourth day, Ervine will be hopeful of reaching a milestone and more, even if in vain.

West Ham’s £90k-p/w Flop Has Let Moyes Down

After sealing consecutive top-half finishes in the previous two seasons, West Ham spent £179m last summer, with only Chelsea and Manchester United spending more in Europe.

However, the Hammers have dramatically regressed this term and currently sit just four points above the relegation zone and face the unenviable task of playing Manchester City tomorrow evening.

Manager David Moyes admitted the campaign hasn’t worked out as planned and it has been extremely disappointing.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, he said: “I have to be honest and say that it's not worked as well as I would've liked.

"We've introduced a lot of new players, and in the Premier League, it takes time.

“I don't think we could have done anything differently, but we just need to try and see if we can get ourselves through this one and hopefully look forward to picking up next season."

One signing who has perhaps been the most underwhelming and has been unable to adapt to a new league has been Gianluca Scamacca.

The Italian is on £90k-per-week on a five-year deal and has been draining the club whilst offering little output.

How has Gianluca Scamacca played for West Ham?

The 24-year-old was signed by the Irons for £35.5m and was their second-most expensive transfer of the window. Combine that with his astronomical wage and it means by the end of the campaign, he will have cost them £40m.

But, the forward hasn’t scored a league goal for West Ham since 4 January and has netted three times in 16 appearances. It has been a hugely unsatisfactory showing, blighted by injuries and consistency.

Gianluca-Scamacca-in-action-West-Ham-against-Brentford

Last month, it was confirmed that the former Sassuolo man was undergoing knee surgery, and it would be highly unlikely he would feature again this term.

Prior to his injury, Moyes was strangely reluctant to use the target man and said the best Hammers line up doesn’t include Scamacca: “We know that his physical data has got to be much better than it is. Gianluca has got to get himself back.

“No manager wants to put out a bad team. You want to put out the players who you think are going to win for you, so you are always looking to put your best team out. We just want the output to be bigger and more.”

These comments reflect poorly upon the 11-cap international’s effort and mentality, raising immediate questions if he survives at the London Stadium beyond this term.

Chris Sutton has previously favoured the manager’s standpoint on Scamacca claiming that the attacker has “let Moyes down.”

Whatever happens for the Irons in the remainder of the season, it seems that his future is very murky, and it could be best for both parties if he moves on.

Tottenham Could Sell £100k-p/w Star

Tottenham Hotspur might have won over the weekend, but it was hardly a performance for Cristian Stellini to be proud of, as they crawled over the line amidst numerous dubious refereeing decisions that swung the game in their favour.

Hosting an impressive Brighton and Hove Albion side that have more than earned their praise for this campaign, Roberto De Zerbi was bringing his outfit full of confidence that they could topple a struggling Lilywhites outfit.

Their 65% possession and 17 shots certainly suggested they nearly did so too, and that is without mentioning the penalty that they have since been told they should have had. Instead, the visitors have had to settle for zero points and yet another PGMOL apology.

That is not to suggest that there were no positives for the hosts to take, as the three points that were questionably gained have kept them somewhat in the fight for top four.

It also saw a return to form for Harry Kane and most notably Heung-min Son, who both scored in the same match once again.

However, they papered over the cracks of another all-around poor display by a few key individuals who are all perhaps overstaying their welcome.

None embodies this stance more so than Hugo Lloris, who has recently returned to the lineup.

How did Hugo Lloris play vs Brighton?

Although Saturday did not represent the Frenchman’s poorest display in a Spurs shirt, he continues to inspire little faith in his defenders with an ever-erratic style of goalkeeping.

Not for the first time did the 36-year-old come charging out from a corner only to get a weak fist onto the ball, narrowly avoiding another embarrassing mistake to add to the four that have led to a goal already this season.

His performance earned him a 6.7 rating, making just three saves and one high claim. However, it was the distribution of the £100k-per-week stopper that truly let him down. The ageing 'keeper would maintain an abysmal 45% pass accuracy, completing just 14 passes. Only three of the 20 long balls attempted actually found a man too, as per Sofascore.

Tottenham Hotspur's Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier

As the modern-day goalkeeper evolves, constantly demanding more from them to contribute to the build-up, Lloris only gets left even further behind.

It was even a surprise to see him so quickly displace Fraser Forster, considering the gulf in quality hardly merits such a rapid recall.

Not only this, but those aforementioned VAR calls also bailed out the captain, with Alexis Mac Allister's deflection “bamboozling” the Frenchman, as per journalist Tom Barclay, for the Seagulls’ second disallowed strike.

This summer marks a huge one for Daniel Levy, who must get plenty right to ensure his outfit does not continue to stagnate.

Whilst a new manager will be top of his priorities, perhaps following that, with the transfer war chest he will likely have to promise, some funds could be invested into finally displacing Lloris this summer.

Newcastle’s £25k-p/w Target "Would Jump" At Chance To Join

Newcastle United target Joao Pedro “would jump” at the chance to move to St. James’ Park, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

What's the latest on Pedro to Newcastle?

Pedro currently plays his football at Watford in the Championship, and despite his deal there not expiring for another five years, the Hornets' likely failure to secure promotion this season means that he could look for a move elsewhere this summer, and he wouldn’t be short of a potential suitor in the Premier League.

Football Insider report that the Magpies are long-term admirers of the 21-year-old having seen a £30m deal rejected last summer, as it’s claimed that Eddie Howe remains keen on his target and is plotting a new move ahead of the upcoming window. The Brazilian is Chris Wilder’s best-performing player with an average match rating of 7.48 so it’s no surprise to see that the northeast boss is still monitoring him, and it sounds like he could be more than tempted to make the move to St. James’ Park.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke insisted that Pedro would love to sign for Newcastle, with the possibility of Champions League football an extra incentive. He said:

“This is long-term interest from Newcastle for Joao Pedro. They tried to sign him last January, but weren't able to get a deal over the line. They've continued to keep tabs on him. He's obviously been in the Championship with Watford this season, so I'm sure the player would jump at the chance to move back to the Premier League as it doesn't look like Watford are going to win promotion back to the top flight.

"As I said, the chance to go to Newcastle with potential Champions League football on offer – I'm sure this is something Joao Pedro would jump at."

Watford striker Joao Pedro.

Should Newcastle make another offer for Pedro?

Pedro is Watford’s standout performer and with the prolific qualities that he possesses in the final third, Newcastle should definitely submit another bid in a second attempt to secure his services.

The £25k-per-week talisman has racked up 15 goal contributions (11 goals and four assists) in 33 Championship appearances this season and has bagged an outstanding ten man-of-the-match awards during that time, with his form and movement in tight spaces having seen him described as “elegant” by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

The Hornets star is also always looking to produce moments of magic even when he’s not on the scoresheet, ranking in the 99th percentile for successful take-ons alongside recording 107 shot-creating actions this season, higher than any of his fellow teammates, via FBRef, so the Magpies' board shouldn’t even have to think twice about making another approach.

Arsenal: Eddie Nketiah ‘uncertain’ to play Bournemouth

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has received a blow before they play Bournemouth in the Premier League, as Eddie Nketiah is ‘uncertain’ to play through injury.

The Lowdown: Limped off

Journalist Charles Watts reported that Nketiah ‘limped off’ after the 4-0 win at home to Everton on Wednesday night with an injury.

The striker has been suffering with an issue for ‘a while’, which is why he was partially rested in the 1-0 win over Leicester City last weekend.

The Latest: ‘Uncertain’ to play

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of their match against Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium, Arteta has since confirmed that Nketiah is ‘uncertain’ to feature, and will have to be assessed:

“We are assessing him. It’s a bit uncertain to be honest.”

The Verdict: Blow

It will come as a blow to Arteta that Nketiah may not be available for selection, especially considering that Gabriel Jesus is still out injured.

The Englishman has not been the most prolific, with just incredible’ work-rate.

It means that the Spaniard will have to play an unrecognised striker against the Cherries, with winger Leandro Trossard likely to fill that role having played it in the last two matches.

The 28-year-old is capable in that position, having recorded two assists in those games, and so hopefully the Gunners will not miss Nketiah too much should he be ruled out.
