Tom Alsop leads Sussex record rampage to home semi

Another hundred for Cheteshwar Pujara as Middlesex concede 240 in last 18 overs

Sussex 400 for 4 (Alsop 189*, Pujara 132) beat Middlesex 243 (Cracknell 71, Crocombe 3-33, Rawlins 3-61) by 157 runsSussex secured a home semi-final in the Royal London One-Day Cup after their rampant batsmen made 400 for four against Middlesex at Hove, hitting 249 from their last 20 overs. They were led by an unbeaten 189 not out by Tom Alsop, his best List A score, while captain Cheteshwar Pujara continued his spectacular form with 132, the pair adding 240 for the third wicket in 27 overs as Sussex topped Group A with six wins in eight matches. With results going against them elsewhere, Middlesex were knocked out of the competition. The Sussex total was their highest score in one-day cricket, beating their 399 in a 40-over game in Horsham. They scored 397 for five against Somerset at Taunton on Friday.Long before they were finished, they had passed their previous one-day best against Middlesex, 333 for four at Hove last year. It was also the highest one-day score against Middlesex, beating Nottinghamshire’s 368 for two at Lord’s in the same competition in 2014.That left Middlesex needing to beat their previous best chase (292 for four against Surrey at Lord’s in 2014) by a big margin. Essentially, Middlesex were required to play Twenty20 cricket for 50 overs. And, with their deep batting, they kept coming at the Sussex bowlers even as the wickets tumbled. Joe Cracknell led the way with a 73-ball 71, with ten fours and there were plenty of bright cameos but the task was overwhelming and they were bowled out for 243 in 38.1 overs. When Sussex started their innings, they looked unlikely to scale the heights. Invited to bat in damp conditions, under floodlights and heavy clouds, they must have suspected the odds were against them, even though the depleted Middlesex attack was missing the injured Umesh Yadav, Toby Greatwood and Ethan Bamber.Alsop, back from a back spasm and replacing Dan Ibrahim, and Ali Orr, in subdued form after his double century at Taunton, looked sedate rather than commanding as they took 58 runs off the opening ten overs.Related

Orr fell for 20 off 28 deliveries, caught behind as he played a diffident stroke against the impressive Thilan Walallawita, and it was 95 for two in the 18th over when Tom Clark chopped on a wide one from Max Harris.Alsop and Pujara then put on 240 for the third wicket in 27 overs. Pujara started methodically, as he always does, and reached his half-century from 49 deliveries; he then doubled his strike rate, scoring 82 more from another 41, finishing with 20 fours and two sixes in his third century in the competition. After 32 overs Sussex were 160 for two, scoring at exactly five an over. They added 240 runs in their final 18 overs. The spinners Walallawita and Luke Hollman – early on – put a brake on the Sussex scoring. But Middlesex’s success with their slower bowlers ended when Stoneman’s three overs went for 33 and both Alsop and Pujara got after Martin Andersson, who conceded 110 in his nine overs, and Harris, who went from 90 in ten.

Aston Villa in talks over signing striker whose contract expires in January

Aston Villa are in reported talks over signing a striker whose contract currently runs out at the end of this month, with Unai Emery’s side looking to take advantage of an existing connection in an attempt to facilitate the move.

Aston Villa "moving" for new January signings

Emery, speaking in his latest pre-match press conference ahead of their Premier League encounter with Leicester City this afternoon, has admitted that the club are actively working on transfers for the January window.

Villa’s form has taken a real downturn overall since the beginning of 2024/2025, when they originally started in excellent fashion, and have lost the most league games out of any side in the top 10 alongside current champions Man City.

They’ve been given encouragement by recent wins against Brentford, Southampton, City and RB Leipzig in the Champions League over this past month, but it’s clear they’re far from the finished article, despite finishing in the top four last season.

Emery says that they could use January as an opportunity to strengthen their ranks, and Villa are “moving forward” in pursuit of potential targets.

“We are starting the New Year, and we finished a fantastic 2024,” said Emery in his press conference on Friday.

“We achieved our best objective we can dream in that moment, to be in Europe and to be in [the] Champions League and this year to be playing Champions League.

“Now, we are starting the new year focused on our match against Leicester, starting at home at Villa Park. We did a very good year, but trying to separate last year, last season and this season. The first part of the season, we are really not thinking we are bad, but could be better, and the league is our priority.

“Of course, we are in the transfer window as well, and the club is moving forward to try to increase our level in the squad in case we can sign new players and in case someone has to leave, we are open to doing it. But the most important for me is the match tomorrow.”

Aston Villa in talks over signing Vissel Kobe striker Taisei Miyashiro

There are reports that Villa are attempting to lure Marco Asensio away from PSG, and it is now believed they have their eyes on Vissel Kobe striker Taisei Miyashiro as well.

Indeed, as relayed by media outlet Villa News, V Sports (the holding company which owns the club) has a direct link with Vissel Kobe as one of the sides under their portfolio, and this could help to facilitate a move for Miyashiro.

VN state that Villa are in talks over signing Miyashiro for Emery, and it is certainly worth noting that the Japanese forward is out of contract at the end of this month, according to Transfermarkt.

The 24-year-old scored 11 goals last year and may well come as a potential replacement for the exit-bound Jaden Philogene.

Crystal Palace could land ‘the Reading version of Olise’ in EFL sensation

Crystal Palace have been quietly plugging away since their poor start to the season, now finding themselves 15th in the Premier League on 21 points, five points off the relegation zone.

Oliver Glasner’s side have improved defensively as the campaign has gone on, but still find themselves as one of the league’s lowest goalscorers, scoring 21 times in 20 games (4th lowest in the division).

Since the Eagles lost Michael Olise in the summer, Palace have been looking to add some attacking spark to their side alongside Eberechi Eze, and this January window could allow just that.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to reports from BBC Sport late last week, Palace are close to signing Millwall winger, Romain Esse, after Lions manager, Alex Neil, said it would take “significant money” for the Eagles to secure the 19-year-old’s signature this month.

Esse has made 26 appearances for Millwall this campaign in all competitions, scoring five goals, providing one assist and totalling 2,165 minutes played. The teenager has played in a variety of positions, including right-wing, left-wing and attacking midfield.

Romain Esse for Millwall.

The reports also state Palace’s interest in Liverpool’s Ben Doak, who is currently on loan in the Championship with Middlesbrough, but it seems Esse will likely be the first arrival this month for the Eagles.

Why Esse could be the next Olise

In the 2023/24 season, before Olise made his move to Bayern Munich for around £50m. The 23-year-old winger made 19 appearances (all in the Premier League), scoring ten goals, providing six assists and totalling 1,278 minutes played.

Palace signed Ismaila Sarr in the summer to fill the void left by Olise, who has gone on to make 25 appearances for Glasner’s side since joining, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 1,477 minutes played. However, another attacking player could be needed in order to reproduce the numbers that faded when the Frenchman left the club.

Ben Mattinson has labelled Esse “the Reading version of Michael Olise” which goes in line nicely when comparing the two wingers. Being just 19 years old, Esse has a good few years of development when making the jump to Palace, to prove he can hit the same levels Olise did, earning his move to Bayern at 22 years old.

Indeed, prior to making the move to Selhurst Park, the London-born, France international dazzled for the Royals, boasting 21 goals and assists in 73 games in all competitions, with all the signs pointing to Esse making a similarly smooth transition.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise

Esse won’t be expected to come in and instantly replicate Olise’s numbers – with the latter man registering 41 goals and assists in 90 games for the Eagles – but the fact he clearly has elements to his game of similarity and is willing to work hard off the ball (shown by his tackles + interceptions numbers) will make him a huge positive for Glasner and his side.

Ange must ruthlessly drop Son & unleash "very complete" Spurs star instead

Tottenham Hotspur’s poor form continued after a 1-0 Boxing Day defeat against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. That is the sixth time they have failed to win in December, with their only victories coming away to Southampton and at home to Manchester United in a hectic Carabao Cup tie.

Indeed, it was a former Red Devils star who sunk the Lilywhites, with Anthony Elanga scoring the only goal of the game. It was a game where Spurs dominated the ball. As per Sofascore, they had 70% possession but failed to break down a tough Forest defence.

One of the most disappointing performers on the day was captain Son Heung-Min.

Son’s stats vs. Forest

It has been a bit of a strange season for Tottenham captain Son. The South Korean is naturally not having the same impact as he did a few years ago, given the fact he is 32 years of age. Yet, he still has five goals and six assists in 14 Premier League games.

Heung-min Son

Against Southampton in the 5-0 thrashing earlier this month, the Spurs captain scored once and grabbed two assists.

He also scored twice in the 4-0 win over Everton on the second day of the season. So, the numbers are there, but he has struggled for form too.

Perhaps the defeat on Boxing Day is a prime example of this. Whilst the Spurs number seven was involved in the game, having 53 touches and creating three chances, he didn’t really have the impact one might expect.

This was certainly echoed by Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold. The Spurs correspondent gave the Lilywhites number seven a 4/10 for his performance in the East Midlands, describing his display as ‘hesitant and ineffective’.

Ange Postecoglou now has a bold decision to make. With Spurs stuck in this rut of limp form, he might well choose to drop his captain for their next game against Wolverhampton Wanderers. It would be a bold call, but one that is perhaps justified.

That does leave the question of who could replace Son in the side, with one option being Lucas Bergvall.

Why Bergvall could start vs. Wolves

After a Boxing Day performance that was certainly not the highlight of Christmas for Spurs fans, one silver lining was Bergvall’s cameo. The 18-year-old Swedish midfielder has had fleeting opportunities for the Lilywhites this term, with just 221 minutes in the Premier League.

However, his 26-minute appearance at the City Ground last Thursday was certainly encouraging. Gold described it as a ‘neat cameo’, giving him a 6/10 for his efforts as he tried to help Spurs claw back a point. Indeed, he was busy in the short amount of time he was on the pitch, having 32 touches and a pass accuracy of 92%.

There is more evidence to suggest a start for Bergvall is justified. He has had some impressive performances in the Europa League too this season, particularly in the 1-0 win against AZ Alkmaar. As per Sofascore, the youngster had 50 touches, completed 91% of his passes and created one big chance.

Stats from Sofascore

Starting the Swede might be a smart choice from Postecoglou in order to shake things up, although it would mean the starting lineup could do with a reshuffle. Bergvall is a creative midfielder, operating in central areas. He was once described as a “very complete” player by football analyst Ben Mattinson.

This means that Dejan Kulusevski would have to play out wide to accommodate the 18-year-old. It might see his countryman play on the right and Brennan Johnson switch to the left-hand side.

If he decides to play Bergvall from the start, it would be a brave thing for Postecoglou to do against Wolves. The Old Gold are flying high under new manager Vitor Pereira, with two wins in two games so far.

Spurs are not exactly in good form, so switching things up and giving a youngster like Bergvall a chance from the start could be something that can help them get back to winning ways.

Endrick salary: How much does Real Madrid star earn per week and annually in LaLiga?

A look at Brazilian forward Endrick's wages playing for the most successful club in Europe

It seems like Real Madrid’s management has developed a strong affinity for Brazilian attackers in recent years. Having previously secured the services of Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo in attack, they signed wonderkid Endrick from Palmeiras ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Although he hasn't played too many minutes in his debut season, the youngster has impressed the Bernabeu crowd with his flair on the pitch.

An advantage of Endrick’s signing for Los Blancos are his relatively low wages as the youngster earns significantly less compared to the big names in the squad.

But exactly how much does he make?

GOAL delved into the numbers with Capology and found out!

  • Endrick's wages at Real Madrid in numbers

Endrick currently earns around £67,464 ($87,185) on a weekly basis, making him one of the lowest earning players in the squad, just ahead of Jesus Vallejo and Raul Asencio.

On an annual basis, the Brazilian earns about £3.5 million ($4.5m).

    Top earners at Real Madrid

As aforementioned, Enrick is one of the lowest earning players in the squad, but who are top earners at Los Blancos? Let's take a look!

The highest earner at Real Madrid is former PSG star Kylian Mbappe, followed by David Alaba, who is a somewhat surprising entrant in second place.

Following the Austrian on the list are Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Jr., who earn identical wages, while Fede Valverde rounds off the list at number five.

Chelsea forward set to make bizarre threat to Maresca amid Man Utd interest

When Enzo Maresca took over as Chelsea boss in the summer, there were questions raised about how he would manage such a bloated squad. Thus far, however, he appears to have done a fantastic job.

The Italian coach has both trimmed the fat, selling and loaning out a number of players, and he also successfully rotated those in his squad across the Blues’ various competitions to give everyone playing time.

Chelsea’s players look, at least for the most part, happy, and the club is firing on all cylinders. They are currently third in the Premier League – seven places ahead of where they were at the same stage last season under Mauricio Pochettino – and are breaking records in the Europa Conference League.

Nkunku wants out amid Man Utd interest

One player who doesn’t appear to be enjoying life at Stamford Bridge this season, however, is Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman, who joined the Blues from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023, has been limited to just one Premier League start all season, with Maresca preferring Nicolas Jackson as his main man up-top.

Nkunku has been a regular for Chelsea in their cup competitions, and has taken his opportunities with both hands, scoring 10 goals – a figure that makes him the club’s top scorer this term.

But according to Football Insider, games in the Europa Conference League aren’t enough for the France international, who they claim could now be ready to make a bold move in order to try and persuade Maresca to give him his chance in the top flight.

In a recent report, the publication claimed that Nkunku is ready “to demand an increase in playing time”, which if he does not get, “will look to move to a club who can guarantee a starting place”.

Manchester United and Nkunku’s boyhood club Paris Saint-Germain are understood to be among those interested in the 27-year-old.

Maresca offers Nkunku hope

Amid Nkunku’s reported unhappiness, Maresca has offered hope that the Frenchman could soon feature in the Premier League. Following Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal before the international break, Maresca distanced himself from claims that he has a distinct first and second team.

“The ones that played tonight, probably in three weeks they are playing Conference, and the ones that are playing Conference, they can play in the Premier League,” he explained.

“Joao Felix can play in the Premier League. Nkunku can play Premier League. All of them can play Premier League,” he said. “I always repeat the same thing. Just because they played today doesn’t mean they’re going to play the next one. You have to compete, you have to perform in the right away.”

Covid-19 puts Keegan Petersen out of South Africa's Test tour of New Zealand

Keegan Petersen has been ruled out of South Africa’s Test tour of New Zealand because of Covid-19, and has been replaced by Zubayr Hamza.A CSA statement on Wednesday morning said that Petersen “is well and asymptomatic”, and that the board’s medical team “will keep in close contact with him to ensure his physical and mental well-being”.South Africa Test captain Dean Elgar indicated that one of Sarel Erwee or Hamza would replace Petersen in the XI. That meant Ryan Rickelton, who has scored three centuries in his last five first-class innings, might not have made the grade yet.Related

“It’s unfortunate that KP is going to miss out on this trip. I would love to have seen him build on what he started in the India series,” Elgar said in a press interaction. “Sarel Erwee has been the back-up for quite some time. He has had a few series where he has been carrying drinks and has been brilliant for us off the field. I’ve like to think he is the one guy that comes in.”In saying that, Zubayr is another option for us. We’ll have to see what the best option is for us. It’s another opportunity for someone to come in and make a play for the team and try and give the selectors a little headache. It’s pretty clear cut that Sarel and Hamza are the two guys pushing for that No. 3 spot.”Petersen, 28, was the batting star of South Africa’s recent 2-1 home Test series win over India, topping the run charts with 276 runs from six innings at an average of 46.00. Though he failed to get to three figures in any of the innings – the 82 in the final Test is his career best so far – Petersen has slotted in as South Africa’s preferred one-drop in the longest format in recent times, and currently has an average of 35.55 from five Tests.Hamza hasn’t turned out for South Africa since his only ODI appearance, back in November 2021 against Netherlands in Centurion, when he scored 56 from 79 balls from No. 3. Hamza, 26, has also played five Tests, scoring 181 runs at an average of 18.10.Sarel Erwee could well pip Zubayr Hamza to a place in the final XI•Cricket South Africa

The 17-member squad for the two-Test series includes Simon Harmer. The offspinner last played for South Africa in 2015 and signed a Kolpak deal with Essex in 2017, and has now been picked as back-up spinner to Keshav Maharaj in place of George Linde, who was unavailable because of his upcoming wedding. Prenelan Subrayen, the other spinner who has recently been around the squad, was not considered because of a groin injury.Lutho Sipamla, the seamer, has also been recalled, and he completes a seven-man strong fast-bowling line-up that has Kagiso Rabada, who was rested for the ODIs against India, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Glenton Stuurman, Duanne Olivier and allrounder Wiaan Mulder. Sisanda Magala, who was in the Test squad for the India series, has been left out.Anrich Nortje, who missed the India Tests with a hip injury, continues to be out of action. As for the travelling management team, South Africa A team coach Malibongwe Maketa and physiotherapist Brent Martin will join the squad, replacing Rivash Gobind and Craig Govender, who have been granted leave.Updated squad: Dean Elgar (capt), Temba Bavuma, Sarel Erwee, Zubayr Hamza, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Duanne Olivier, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Lutho Sipamla, Glenton Stuurman, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne (wk).

Celtic’s "impressive" loan star is now worth more than Idah after leaving

Wednesday’s draw away to Atalanta in the Champions League offered an example of Celtic’s newfound defensive strength, bolstered by the presence of a veteran Kasper Schmeichel in the sticks, with the Old Firm side recording their first clean sheet in Europe’s premier competition in seven years.

It is at the top end of the pitch, however, where the Hoops have largely drawn plaudits in recent times – even despite racking up six clean sheets in the Premiership already this term – with 24 goals scored from just eight league outings.

To put that into perspective, Philippe Clement’s Rangers – who are no longer the Parkhead side’s closest title challengers – have only scored 12 goals in that time, illustrating the stark difference in quality in those forward ranks.

With goals coming from the flanks courtesy of both Daizen Maeda and Nicholas Kuhn, who have six apiece, what is also particularly pleasing is the competition in the centre-forward berth, with Kyogo Furuhashi now kept on his toes by the presence of a certain Adam Idah.

Adam Idah's Celtic record

It’s fair to say that the arrival of the Irishman in January was not met with widespread optimism among those in Glasgow, with club legend Chris Sutton among the notable doubters, after insisting that the Norwich City man wasn’t an “upgrade” on Oh Hyeon-gyu and was a “long way from the finished article”.

Perhaps that latter claim is still true, yet the 23-year-old – who scored just 17 goals in 116 games for the Canaries – has no doubt flourished ever since arriving through the door on an initial temporary basis, having been something of a difference-maker in the second half of last season.

After ending 2023/24 with nine goals in just 19 games, a return that included his last-gasp winner in the Scottish Cup final triumph over the Gers, the Cork native was belatedly snapped up permanently by Brendan Rodgers and co over the summer.

An initial £9.5m outlay may appear hefty, yet Idah has continued to impress in the early knockings of this season with four goals in all competitions, albeit while scoring just once in the Premiership.

The latest in a long line of young strikers who have arrived at the club in recent times – harking back to the likes of Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard – the Republic of Ireland star has certainly made a positive impression, as his return of 13 goals in 30 games illustrates.

That said, there is another former Hoops star who is perhaps soaring even higher for one of Europe’s elite clubs…

The former Celtic star who is worth more than Idah

They say never fall in love with loan players, with it often far too brief of a relationship.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

That was indeed the case with the signing of a then-teenage forward by the name of Timothy Weah back in January 2019, with the American marksman having made a brief, yet telling impact at the club.

In truth, it couldn’t have started much better for the then Paris Saint-Germain starlet as he scored on debut in a 3-0 win over Airdrieonians in the Scottish Cup, prior to then netting on his league debut against St Mirren.

His fourth league outing – which also came in the form of a late cameo – also yielded a goal and an assist to mark a bright beginning at Parkhead, with those “impressive” showings drawing particular praise from Charlie Nicholas:

Unfortunately for Weah, that early impact was somewhat halted following Rodgers’ decision to call time on his first spell in charge in late February, with the youngster subsequently used sparingly by the Northern Irishman’s successor, Neil Lennon.

Tim Weah

That lack of involvement culminated in the on-loan forward seeing his loan spell cut short to join up with the United States ahead of the U20 World Cup, thus missing out on the Scottish Cup final clash with Hearts.

Following his return to France, the versatile talent – who registered five goals and assists in just 17 games for Celtic – ultimately joined fellow Ligue 1 side Lille, prior to moving to Italian giants Juventus last summer.

Still just 24, Weah has enjoyed an encouraging start to the new season under Thiago Motta, with one goal and one assist chalked up in Serie A from his right wing-back role.

That rise since leaving Glasgow has ensured that the 41-cap international is now deemed to be worth around £12m – according to Football Transfers – thus placing him ahead of Idah’s sizeable transfer fee from the summer.

There may be a sense of frustration that Weah was never properly afforded a consistent run of starts under Lennon to prove his worth, although the player himself can at least look back fondly on his short, but memorable, stint at Celtic Park at the age of just 18.

Celtic's "no-nonsense" loan ace is now worth more than Trusty after leaving

One former Celtic star is now thriving elsewhere

He’s like Rice: West Ham should brutally ditch Alvarez & sign £17m star

When Julen Lopetegui took the reins at West Ham United, the bog in which he is currently mired is something that would have been dreaded. The unthinkable eventuality.

The Spanish tactician needs to do something drastic in the coming weeks if he is to win over the Hammers fanbase, who are collectively mourning former boss David Moyes (who was, let’s not forget, shooed out the door).

West Ham United manager David Moyes

West Ham are 14th in the Premier League and floundering, without a discernible style of play or indeed a modicum of confidence. Thrashed by Nottingham Forest last time out, it’s a situation tail-spinning out of control.

Points and positive performances are needed, but in fairness to Lopetegui, he’s not being helped by his players, with Edson Alvarez stupidly picking up his second red card of the season at the City Ground.

Edson Alvarez's abject start to the season

Alvarez’s careless and clumsy challenge was a personification of his season, which in itself was a further personification of the travails under Lopetegui’s management.

Edson Alvarez

The Mexico international was monstrous at times last term, signed for a £35m fee from Ajax to help replace Declan Rice. This year, he’s been a mere shadow, languishing at the epicentre of the Irons’ struggles.

What’s more, the 27-year-old doesn’t look like he’s putting in his full capacity of performance, something that is inexcusable. Even if Lopetegui is replaced post-haste, and West Ham click back into gear – is he truly the man to anchor the midfield?

West Ham could change tack and sign a former target: Richard Rios.

West Ham should sign Richard Rios

Back when the summer transfer window was open, Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra revealed that West Ham were interested in bidding for Palmeiras star Rios, with further Premier League outfits watching the central midfielder.

The 24-year-old has established himself as one of the finest midfielders playing in Brazil over the past few years, featuring 96 times for Palmeiras and notching 11 goal contributions. He was instrumental in winning the 2023 league title.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

This season, the athletic ace, who stands at 6 foot 2, has averaged 2.4 tackles and 5.3 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore, which bears testament to his muscular physique and combative approach – something that suggests he could neatly replace the struggling Alvarez.

The intrigue seems to be genuine, with reports from only a few weeks ago pointing toward retained Hammers interest. Rios, who is understood to be valued at €20m (£17m) by his Brasileiro Serie A outfit, is a tough and tenacious midfielder, exactly what West Ham need.

Described as a “ball-carrying machine” by analyst Ben Mattinson, he might even be Rice’s successor at the London Stadium, for the Arsenal sensation is known for his energy and forward-driving skill with the ball.

Both players operate in dynamic and progressive roles, but Rios is showcasing some exciting hints of versatility that could see him be the perfect option in West Ham’s midfield, reinforcing it but also transforming it into something more lively and multi-dimensional.

West Ham should seriously consider revisiting their interest in this ‘machine’. He’s cut from a similar cloth as Rice and he has the defensive quality to replace Alvarez.
