Padres vs. Phillies Prediction, Odds, Pick and Probable Pitchers for Monday, June 17

The Philadelphia Phillies have stumbled a bit of late, going just 5-5 in their last 10 games, but they still hold the top spot in the National League and are 8.0 games clear of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

They'll get their week started with a three-game home set against the San Diego Padres, who are desperately trying to get back into the mix. They currently sit one game under .500 at 37-38.

In this article, I'm going to break down everything you need to know to bet on Monday's National League showdown.

Padres vs. Phillies Key Players to Watch

San Diego Padres

Randy Vasquez: The Padres' starter has a sub-par ERA on the year of 4.93, but a 5.21 FIP and a 1.513 WHIP suggest further regression is coming for the righty. He needs to improve sooner rather than later or his metrics will start to fall even further. He has a tall order infront of him today in one of the most potent lineups in baseball.

Philadelphia Phillies

Trea Turner: The Phillies have activated Trea Turner from the 10-day injury list and is expected to return to their lineup tonight. The star shortstop has been sidelined since early may with a hamstring injury. He has batting an impressive .343 before hitting the IL.

Padres vs. Phillies Prediction and Pick

The Phillies are rightfully favored in this spot and I still think there's more betting value to bet had on them at -178 odds. Trea Turner returning to the lineup should be able to give this Phillies' offense a much-needed boost after slumping, by their standards, over the past few weeks.

I have no doubt they'll be able to take advantage of the Padres rolling with Vasquez, whose already bad numbers will likely get worse. His underlying metrics suggest further regression for him in his second year in the Majors and an offense like the Phillies has the ability to eat him up.

Meanwhile, the Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez seems due for positive regression. His 3.07 ERA could be even better at this point of the season as his FIP sits at 2.58. He will be supported by the Phillies' bullpen today, which ranks third in the Majors in bullpen ERA over the last 30 days.

Sometimes the obvious bet is the right bet. I'll take the Phillies to get the job done at home.

Birmingham City lead race to sign "wonderful" free agent sponsored by Nike

Birmingham City completed the summer transfer window with one of the highest quantities of arrivals in the Championship, despite being quite a way off the highest expenditure.

Tom Wagner and Tom Brady oversaw permanent transfers, loan moves and free agent arrivals for 14 new players for a net spend of just over £3.6 million for Chris Davies. They ranked 7th for highest net spend, and only a small number of teams had more arrivals; however, leading up to deadline day, Davies shared his desire for more arrivals:

“I think we need a little bit of reinforcement, just depth in our defensive area and again, we could do with a bit more depth, maybe higher up the pitch as well. But we have to see what the squad looks like in the next couple of days because there’s a lot of moving parts to it, as I said. But everyone’s trying, we’ll see what happens.”

The Blues did manage to bring in late additions in defender Jack Robinson and winger Patrick Roberts from Sheffield United and Sunderland respectively. However, it now looks like that deadline day didn’t satiate Davies’s desire for reinforcements and so Birmingham are looking to take advantage of the free agent market to bring in a Premier League-proven midfielder.

Birmingham front-runners to sign free agent Oxlade-Chamberlain

Birmingham City are looking to reinforce their midfield options and continue developing into a Premier League quality team by bringing in free agent and former Premier League winner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Since leaving Liverpool in 2023, Oxlade-Chamberlain has been playing for the Turkish side Besiktas. However, in mid-August, it started being reported that Besiktas were looking to terminate Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract and that the midfielder was interested in a move back to England. On August 27th, the Turkish side paid off the remaining £1.5 million of his contract, making him a free agent.

While any club could have signed the Nike-sponsored midfielder during the transfer window, clubs focused on deals that required an actual club-to-club transfer, as being a free agent, Oxlade-Chamberlain can be signed at any time.

Ever since the rumours of a contract termination first broke, Birmingham have been one of the most heavily connected teams. Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke has now reported that Birmingham are at the forefront of the race to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain and are the leading candidates. However, they face competition from European teams as well as Premier League side Leeds United.

Opportunity to sign "wonderful" midfielder

If Birmingham can tempt Oxlade-Chamberlain away from his other suitors, they will be receiving a seasoned player with Champions League and International experience.

When he joined Besiktas, his former Liverpool manager, Jürgen Klopp, had plenty of praise, calling Oxlade-Chamberlain “wonderful”.

In the years since Klopp said this about Oxlade-Chamberlain, his injury record hasn’t improved. However, the experience that he can bring to the Birmingham side, having gone through a successful promotion campaign with Southampton and having copious amounts of Premier League experience, will make him an invaluable addition to the team.

Vitinha 'priviliged' to finish behind Ousmane Dembele & Lamine Yamal in Ballon d'Or rankings and praises PSG co-star as 'truly' the world's best

Vitinha expressed his happiness at achieving a third-placed finish in the Ballon d'Or rankings and extended his congratulations to Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Ousmane Dembele, who pipped Barcelona rival Lamine Yamal to lift the prestigious award. Vitinha was one of the best midfielders in the world last season and achieved tremendous success with both club and country.

  • From Wolves reject to Ballon d'Or top three

Vitinha's career trajectory has been inspirational to say the least. The 25-year-old spent the 2020-21 season at Wolves, on loan from Porto. However, he made just 19 Premier League appearances as Wolves decided against making the loan permanent. Four years later, Vitinha has finished third in the Ballon d'Or rankings, behind winner and PSG team-mate Dembele and Barcelona's Yamal.

    Vitinha, the quadruple-winning midfielder

Vitinha was one of the pillars of Luis Enrique's rampant PSG team. The club won its first-ever Champions League title, along with the Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and the Trophee des Champions trophies. Later, he helped Portugal lift the Nations League after beating Spain, with head coach Roberto Martinez even going so far as to say that the midfielder should be a deserving candidate for the Ballon d'Or.

  • Vitinha chuffed to bits for Dembele

Earlier this month, the former Porto man conceded that he was aiming "for a good place" in the rankings. His wish came true, as he expressed his delight over finishing third and seeing his team-mate Dembele take home the prestigious accolade.

"Third best in the world! I'm privileged! I'm fortunate to do what I love most every day, supported by a family I love and incredible friends," Vitinha wrote on social media. "Reaching this level is unbelievable. Congratulations to our dream team, [Monday] was the best of the year, and, without a doubt, congratulations to my friend Dembele, who is truly the best player in the world! Is it difficult to do better than this year? Yes. But I don't want to stop wanting more."

Romano: Aston Villa now make contact to sign "unstoppable" £35m forward

Aston Villa have made contact over a deal for an “unstoppable” forward, who is now an “option” for the final week of the transfer window.

Villa keen on new forward after disappointing Brentford loss

Villa are winless in their opening two Premier League matches this season, most recently suffering a 1-0 defeat away at Brentford, and Troy Deeney was left very unimpressed by their attackers’ performance at the Gtech Community Stadium.

When asked whether Villa need to sign Nicolas Jackson, Deeney said: “Absolutely they need him. I put down on my notes ‘toothless’, Aston Villa going forward. It’s long throws, it’s set pieces, it’s just not looking right in the midfield for me, there’s too many central players.”

Unai Emery’s side are still yet to register a league goal this season, with Ollie Watkins drawing two blanks, while new signing Evann Guessand failed to make an impact after coming off the bench against the Bees.

As such, Emery may want to bolster his attacking options ahead of the September 1st transfer deadline, and the Villans have now stepped up their interest in signing a Premier League forward…

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who recently took to X to state that Aston Villa have made contact over a deal for Chelsea’s Christoper Nkunku, who is now an “option” for Emery’s side going into the final week of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea's ChristopherNkunkucelebrates scoring their first goal

However, there may be fierce competition for Nkunku’s signature, with Bayern Munich also being named as potential suitors, alongside former club RB Leipzig, with a potential price tag of £35m recently being touted.

Nkunku is not the only attacker on the shortlist, however, with Romano revealing that Villa are also targeting Jackson and Marco Asensio.

"Unstoppable" Nkunku could excel at Villa Park

Given that Chelsea are blessed with a wide array of attacking options, the Frenchman has found game time difficult to come by at Stamford Bridge, but there are signs he could excel at Villa Park.

Journalist Zach Lowy has waxed lyrical about the former RB Leipzig man’s pace and movement in the past, while he also proved himself as a reliable goalscorer in Germany.

Indeed, the ex-Leipzig star amassed a whopping 36 Bundesliga goals across the 2021-22 and 2022-23 campaigns, while also providing 21 assists during that time.

Nkunku has been unable to reach similar heights in the Premier League, scoring just three goals last season, but he was often utilised as a substitute, and the 14-time France international’s previous exploits indicate he could excel at Villa if given regular time.

Player now "set to leave Chelsea" with Saudi approach made

Chelsea are poised to let another player depart Stamford Bridge this summer amid their mission to trim Enzo Maresca’s bloated books.

Financially, they’re in a strong position after winning the Club World Cup, with their tournament victory yieldin £87.5 million in prize money. This, combined with the exits of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Basir Humphreys, Noni Madueke, Marcus Bettinelli and Djordje Petrovic for an estimated £96 million, means Chelsea are currently in line to sail well under the PSR threshold for next year as things stand.

However, UEFA struck an agreement with the Blues recently after their fine for breaching FFP rules – sell players to balance out the squad or face an inability to register new signings for next season’s Champions League (Kaveh Solhekol).

A host of Chelsea players could still leave the club before deadline day on September 1, with Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Renato Veiga, Axel Disasi, Carney Chukwuemeka, Lesley Ugochukwu, Armando Broja, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Christopher Nkunku, João Félix and even Nicolas Jackson all potentially up for sale by BlueCo, according to recent reports.

Another squad member who’s now far more likely than not to depart Cobham in the coming weeks is boyhood Chelsea supporter Alfie Gilchrist.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Sheffield United and was a regular under ex-Blades boss Chris Wilder for a portion of the campaign, before first-team action became harder to come by, partly due to injury.

Alfie Gilchrist "set to leave Chelsea" with Saudi approach made

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Gilchrist’s exit appears to be a forgone conclusion, and he’s attracting interest from both Championship sides and clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

In truth, it is quite a disappointing end to his Chelsea career, but competition in Maresca’s squad is fierce and Gilchrist quite simply needs a new chapter to further his own career.

Chelsea legend John Terry once tipped the Englishman for “big things” after he made his senior debut for the club in 2023, later praising his ferocious work rate in an interview with The Mail.

“Literally from the first training session in which I saw him, he reminded me of myself,” Terry said.

“He was keen to learn, asking me questions about defending and constantly picking my brains over what I would do in different situations.

“And he’s 100 per cent in everything he does. Whether that’s the warm-up to get him going, he’s all-in. You don’t ever want to take that away. Even on his recovery days, he’s 100 miles per hour.

“As he gets older, he’ll understand how to manage that and how to be. But it’s a great trait to have for a young player and it can certainly set you apart.

‘If you’re at Chelsea, you’ve got great ability in the first place to be there. But it’s really important for younger players to have that mentality and Alfie had that in abundance even from an early age.”

Friedkin now expected to launch £9m Everton move to sign "solid" midfielder

As Everton’s summer transfer business begins to heat up, The Friedkin Group are reportedly expected to launch a £9m move to sign one particular midfield star.

Everton set to sign Thierno Barry

The first signing of the Hill Dickinson era is on his way, according to Fabrizio Romano. Replacing the departing Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Thierno Barry is set to commence Everton’s summer business in style and hand David Moyes a striker who has certainly left many impressed whilst at Villarreal.

After scoring 19 goals in all competitions, Barry is ready to take the Premier League by storm and solve a striker problem that has been ongoing at Everton since Calvert-Lewin’s injury struggles began.

As one striker arrives, however, another has bid an emotional farewell. Taking to social media to confirm the news that he is leaving Everton after deciding against signing a new deal, Calvert-Lewin said: “After nine remarkable years I’ve made the incredibly difficult decision – together with my family – to begin a new chapter in my career.

“This isn’t something I chose lightly. Everton has been my home since I was 19 years old. It’s the place that saw potential in me, challenged me to grow and shaped me both as a footballer and as a man.

Moyes knows him well: Everton considering move to sign £7m ace after Barry

The Toffees are set to complete the signing of Thierno Barry.

By
Tom Cunningham

Jul 3, 2025

“I want to express my gratitude to all the managers and coaches I’ve worked with over the years and to my team-mates who have become life-long friends.”

The Toffees acted swiftly to replace the experienced striker and that could become quite the trend this summer amid reports that Friedkin are now expected to launch their move to sign the perfect Abdoulaye Doucoure heir.

Friedkin expected to launch Wilfred Ndidi move

According to former Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers scout Mick Brown, Friedkin are expected to launch a £9m move to sign Wilfred Ndidi from Leicester City this summer, triggering his release clause for Everton in the process.

The former scout told Football Insider: “Everton are considering signing Wilfred Ndidi. It’s a move I expect he will be open to as well, the chance to get straight back into the Premier League after getting relegated with Leicester. They’ve been keen on him for a while and he’s a very solid player.

“Everton have had scouts watching his performances and he’s been one of Leicester’s better players. It might prove difficult to get over the line because there are a lot of clubs who have been made aware of that release clause he’s got.

“But I expect them to make an attempt to bring him in ahead of these clubs. Either way, it looks like he’s definitely leaving Leicester.”

A Premier League veteran who is still more than capable in the top-flight, Ndidi represents the type of midfielder who would instantly replace the departed Doucoure at Everton.

Bears rubber-stamp Blast credentials as Outlaws ransacked for 57

North Group leaders Birmingham Bears stamped themselves as the side to beat for any rival with aspirations to win this season’s Vitality Blast as they thrashed Notts Outlaws at Trent Bridge, winning by nine wickets after bowling the home side out for just 57.The home side’s total is comfortably their lowest in the competition’s history – the next lowest being 91 – and the fourth lowest among all the counties since Twenty20 cricket entered the domestic calendar in 2003.The Bears’ batters needed only 32 balls to finish the job, Rob Yates top-scoring with four fours and two sixes in a 20-ball unbeaten 35, cracking the winning boundary through the off side as the contest ended in just 100 minutes. It gave the Bears a sixth consecutive win and an eighth overall as they seek to win the competition for the first time since 2014.With only two wins from their 10 matches so far, the only target for the Outlaws, who were champions for the second time only four years ago, is to avoid finishing bottom of the group. All their four remaining matches are away from home.Seamers George Garton and Zak Foulkes shared three wickets in the opening powerplay but it was the Bears quintet of spinners who were largely responsible for the demolition as Jake Lintott (2 for 17 from four overs), Moeen Ali (2 for 2 from eight) balls, Dan Mousley, Danny Briggs and Jacob Bethell shared seven wickets between them.A first wicket in Nottinghamshire colours – an unfamiliar red on this occasion in recognition of 10 years of support from the club’s principal sponsors – for the Afghan left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi was the only positive from the home side’s point of view. The writing had been on the wall as a catastrophic powerplay ended with the Outlaws 16 for 4 after Birmingham opted to take their chance with the ball after winning the toss. The damage was inflicted in the space of 15 balls as the left-arm quick Garton yorked Ben Martindale and then saw that Ben Slater’s first appearance in this format in three years ended in one delivery as the left-hander, tempted by some width, slashed straight to deep backward point.Clarke, who had looked in outstanding form when hitting 79 off 41 balls on the same pitch on Friday evening, was dismissed by off-spinner Mousley’s second ball, caught behind off an inside edge, before Foulkes, the New Zealand seam-bowling all-rounder, had Matt Montgomery leg before.Seemingly powerless to free themselves from the grip the Bears’ spinners had on proceedings, Outlaws lost Tom Moores and Jack Haynes to top-edges to short third man off left-arm orthodox spinner Briggs and left-arm wrist spinner Jake Lintott.Liam Patterson-White at least put bat through ball against Moeen – making his first Bears appearance of the season – but found the fielder at long-on, after which Calvin Harrison was caught behind reaching for one from Lintott. Lyndon James raised ironic cheers by hitting the second of only two boundaries in the innings but promptly holed out to deep midwicket before Olly Stone skewed Moeen to short third.Farooqi had Ed Barnard caught at mid-off in the third over as the sole Bears casualty.
