And what are the venues where the T20 World Cup 2024 matches will be played?

The 2024 T20 World Cup will be played across nine venues. Apart from Dallas and Bridgetown, there will be matches in Providence, New York, Lauderhill, North Sound, Gros Islet, Kingstown and Tarouba.

Which teams are participating in the T20 World Cup 2024?

There are 20 T20 World Cup teams this year, the most in the history of the tournament. Apart from the hosts West Indies and USA, the eight best-placed teams from the 2022 edition also gained automatic qualification – England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Australia and Netherlands. Afghanistan and Bangladesh also gained automatic qualification through their place in the men’s T20I team rankings.Ireland and Scotland made it through the European qualifier, while Canada won the Americas qualifier. Nepal and Oman progressed from the Asia qualifier, while Namibia and Uganda were the two qualifying teams from Africa. Papua New Guinea won the East Asia-Pacific qualifier.

What is the format for the T20 World Cup 2024?

The 20 teams have been divided into four groups of five teams each. These are the groups . Each team plays each other once with the top two sides from each group making it to the Super Eight stage, where there will be two groups of four teams each. The top two teams from these groups will progress to the semi-final.

Super Eights: how will the teams be grouped and seeded?

Eight teams have been allotted pre-decided seedings that they will retain for the Super Eight stage, provided they qualify. These teams, and their seedings, are:A1 – India, A2 – Pakistan
B1 – England, B2 – Australia
C1 – New Zealand, C2 – West Indies
D1 – South Africa, D2 – Sri LankaThe seedings for the other teams are not fixed. To understand it further, if D1 and D2 qualify from group D, and D2 top the group, D2 will not be given the D1 slot in the Super Eight stage despite topping the group. They will continue with the pre-decided fixtures in Super Eight that have been scheduled for D2.But if, say, D3 or D4 qualify in place of, say, D1, the qualified team will replace D1 in the Super Eight. If D3 and D4 both qualify, then the group topper will play D1’s fixtures and the team that finishes second will be allotted D2’s matches.Once the eight teams are known, they will be grouped into Super Eight as follows:Group 1: A1, B2, C1, D2
Group 2: A2, B1, C2, D1The fixtures for the Super Eight stage, starting June 19, are already listed with the teams’ seedings. No points will be carried forward from the first round to the second.

What happens if a match ends in a tie?

A Super Over will decide every tied match, and if that ends in a tie, there will be another Super Over and so on until a result is achieved.

And how are matches decided if the weather plays spoilsport?

In case of rain or bad weather in the group stage and Super Eight matches, each team will have to be able to bat at least five overs for a result to be declared. However, as was the case in the previous edition, the two semi-finals and the final will need each team to be able to bat a minimum of ten overs for a result to be possible. The 15-member Nepal squad for the T20 World Cup poses for an official photo•NurPhoto via Getty Images

What about the knockout matches, then?

The first semi-final and the final have reserve days but the second semi-final doesn’t, as there is only a day’s gap between that match and the final.A total of 250 minutes of additional time is available for each semi-final. The first semi-final, on June 26, will have an extra 60 minutes at the end of the day’s play and a further 190 minutes the next day on June, starting from 2pm local time. The second semi-final, on June 27, will have 250 minutes available on the scheduled day since it doesn’t have a reserve day.The final has a reserve day on June 30, with the hours of play scheduled for 10.30am local time, and a maximum of 190 minutes extra on both days.In case of the first semi-final and the final, if the match is shortened (say, to ten overs per side) and it starts on the scheduled day but cannot be completed that day because of weather interruptions, it will resume on the reserve day as the same shortened game from where play was abandoned on the previous day.India will play the second semi-final should they reach the knockouts.

What happens if the semi-finals and/or final are abandoned?

If weather conditions do not allow a semi-final to be completed, the team that finished first in their group in the Super Eight stage will progress to the final. The same rule will be applicable if the Super Over after a tied semi-final is also not possible because of poor weather. If the final (or the Super Over after a tied final) is abandoned because of poor weather, the two teams will be declared joint winners.

Which teams have previously won the men’s T20 World Cup?

Seven teams have previously won the men’s T20 World Cup. India won the inaugural edition in 2007, while West Indies and England are the only teams to win it twice. England are also the defending champions. Here is the full list of winners:2007 – India

World-class Babar Azam constructs an innings that only he can

He batted slow, trusted his defence and played another sublime innings when no one else could get to even 20

Andrew Fidel Fernando17-Jul-2022Babar Azam is the top-ranked ODI batter, 77 rankings points ahead of the next guy (Imam-ul-Haq). He is also the top-ranked T20I batter but is ahead of the second by a slimmer margin (Mohammad Rizwan is 24 points back). In Tests, though, the format that matters, the purists’ format, the thing that gets you into Wisden, he’s ranked a paltry fourth. Above him Joe Root (obviously), Steven Smith (partially riding on past glories), and Marnus Labuschagne (originally a discounted Steven Smith who has now proved more popular in the market since the rumours that the original has declined in quality).Related

  • Babar: Shafique can become 'one of the best' in the world

  • Babar ton restricts SL lead after Jayasuriya's five-for

We’re comparing him to the best now. Is the Big Four, now the Big Five? Root, Smith, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, and…. Babar? We have to be comparing, right? This is sport. You cannot exist in a universe all on your own. No player is an island. Forget that the others on that list are four to five years older than him, which in cricketing years, is at least one generation removed, maybe more. They are setting the standard. The over-arching narrative is there. We must make Babar fit into it.Must we though? Do we have to play this game? Is the cricket world really the kind of even place where star batters from teams such as England, Australia and India, and to a lesser degree New Zealand, can fairly be compared to Babar? We don’t have to drag capitalism into it, but you know if we did, that analysis would not land in Babar’s favour. In this innings in Galle, Babar hit 119 runs. Sri Lanka series are not high-octane, or high-prestige, and they won’t get you into the big global lists. Even at home, they’ll move the needle less, you’d think, than series against the Big Three, or even South Africa.Babar, though, is there. Playing another sublime innings, on what is already a big-turning pitch. He plays (late, and under his chin) for the straighter one from Prabath Jayasuriya, which has duped his team-mates and brought lbw dismissals. He bats slow, trusting his defence, when plenty of great batters have hit out at this venue, reasoning that a good ball will inevitably get them out so why not make runs before it does.Babar Azam thanks the Almighty after reaching his seventh Test ton•AFP/Getty ImagesBut this is Babar we are talking about, and the good balls that get the best out are still not too good for him, so he is in his own space, playing as he thinks he should, and likely constructing an innings only he is capable of. In the last two weeks, we’ve had Smith and Labuschagne on this surface too. They produced innings of varying quality – Labuschagne progressing to a hundred on a flatter Galle track than the one on display now, though only after being let off early on.They never looked like they trusted their game like Babar. And rarely will the best batters around the world have their team-mates abandon them as happily as Babar’s did. Babar faced 244 balls in this innings. The next best was Yasir Shah who batted out 56 balls. Divide Babar’s 119 by six, and he’d still be the top scorer for his side. There are lone vigils, and then there’s dragging the bodyweight of your entire top order like vegetables in a gunny bag to the market vendor you need to sell it to, and that was basically Babar. He was on 28 when the seventh wicket went down. Then 38 for the eighth; 55 when the ninth fell. Then, farming roughly 72% of the strike, he more than doubled his score, on a pitch that no one else in his team could get to even 20. Though he was never in a rush through the course of this innings, he occasionally ventured the kinds of salvos that let you know, that if he wanted to, he could. Three successive fours off Kasun Rajitha towards the end of the second session, for example, one drilled down the ground, another crashed over midwicket, the third whipped over square leg.In the long view of this career, this innings might not be part of the central folklore. But a batter hitting 82 runs in the company of Nos. 9, 10 and 11, is not un-spectacular. It’s futile to pretend we won’t compare him with the others, because of course we will. But across formats, across pitch conditions, oppositions, match situations, perhaps we seed the thought there is something special happening here that is happening nowhere else.

West Indies surge through pace, but also discipline (and Chase)

West Indies’ quicks had to bide their time through the first two sessions but came back strongly

Nagraj Gollapudi11-Jul-2020″Morning. Morning! Go get your coffee, doubles, souse, ackee and saltfish because the forecast today predicts PACE from Gabriel, Holder, Roach and Joseph. With a few isolated spinning overs from Chase.”An excited social media manager posted that message on CWI’s Twitter before play on Saturday. If you had watched the first two sessions on what was another sunny day in Southampton, you might have wondered what exactly this person was on.At tea, Kemar Roach was wicketless. Shannon Gabriel had got the better of Dom Sibley, mostly due to error from the batsman. Alzarri Joseph bowled with speed, but the wicket column was empty. Jason Holder once again was on the money, but wickets were not to be found.ALSO READ: Play late: West Indies template for success in EnglandIt was not their fault, though – the Windies pace quartet were all honest triers. They all showed skill, pace, improvisation. Yet the pitch offered no favours. There wasn’t even a modicum of movement, in the air or off the pitch, for the seamers. Roach and Gabriel took a while to adjust with their line and length, which allowed Sibley and Rory Burns to pick up some easy runs and settle down quickly in the first hour.In the first innings West Indies had the support of the conditions – damp and overcast as Holder flattened England with a career-best figures. Roach had told ESPNcricinfo that fast bowling would be real hard work in the absence of saliva. Even the sweat was minimal considering it was the bowler alone who was exerting himself. The outfield was green so while the ball was getting old there was no reverse swing. But there was one option still available to deny England taking the match away: drying up the runs. And that is where Roston Chase, the offspinner, came in. He who surprised England last year with a match-winning eight-wicket haul. Even though the fast men failed to get any purchase, Chase did get the ball to turn significantly.Chase straightway created the doubts by pitching in and around the rough. Towards the end of his second over, bowling from round the stumps, and wide, he pitched an offbreak on Burns’ off stump which spun away. Luckily for Shane Dowrich there was no edge as the Windies gloveman failed to gather the ball cleanly. But the turn, which was appreciable, motivated Chase.

When West Indies did show intent, they reaped the rewards. The best example of that came close to the hour before stumps when Holder challenged his counterpart

The pressure was created in tandem, with Holder once again showing the discipline to keep things simple and allow no relief to the batsmen. The runs dried up. In the 14-over spell they bowled before lunch the pair gave away just 22 runs, including bowling six maidens. Sibley and Burns got sucked in to the disciplined interrogation by Chase and Holder. It was a game of patience now and West Indies were winning. Burns blinked, going to what appeared to be a premeditated cut, off balance and offering the point fielder an easy catch.West Indies kept the leash tight in the second session. According to ESPNcricinfo’s stats team, West Indies’ economy rate of 2.3 just before tea on Saturday was their most economical bowling innings in the last 15 years, when they have bowled 40 or more overs with five or fewer wickets to show for their efforts. Little wonder this West Indies fast bowling attack is being recognised as one of their best ever.If there was one thing the quartet could be accused of it was not showing enough aggression in the first two sessions. Despite having the knowledge that both Burns and Sibley are vulnerable against the short ball, Roach and Gabriel did not test the England openers in the first hour. But when they did show the intent, they reaped the rewards. The best example of that came close to the hour before stumps when Holder challenged his counterpart. Ben Stokes was desperate to take the upper hand against the second new ball and had punched some solid drives against both Roach and Gabriel. But in his second over, Holder bounced Stokes, who had once again been standing outside the crease. Next ball, Holder banged on the seam closer to Stokes, who was beaten by the ball jumping quickly on him. Holder quipped a few words as Stokes gestured that he should have tapped the ball past the two gullies.Roston Chase celebrates after dismissing Rory Burns•Getty ImagesTwo balls later Stoke once again started to move outside off to steer the ball, but Holder, coming from slightly wider, angled the ball away with a straight-ish seam. Stokes duly poked to one of the gullies as Holder jumped in delight. Next over, Zak Crawley, England’s best batsman on the day, pushed a return catch to Joseph who was in the middle of a fierce spell. Soon after Joseph would send Jos Buttler’s leg stump flying, courtesy an inside edge.Joseph had not been bowled for virtually the first two hours. He was earmarked as the man that would leave a mark on this series by West Indies head coach Phil Simmons on the eve of the Test. Yet Joseph was only brought on for a few overs before lunch. Did West Indies miss an opportunity by not letting him loose? But it seemed all part of a plan as Joseph showed late in the afternoon. Soon, Gabriel joined the party too. And Roach, the man on cusp of a significant milestone? He might have not got a wicket in this match so far, but he created pressure with his control and accuracy from the second session onwards. So, yes, the person who sent out that tweet in the morning knew what he was talking about. Pace did have the say, but with ample help from Chase. Discipline earned West Indies the wickets and the upper hand in this Test. Now comes the next challenge.Holder’s men have never been in this position before: of taking the lead in an away series against major opposition. The last time they went 1-0 up in England was 20 years ago at Edgbaston. Before that, they went ahead in 1995 when they won at Leeds in a series that was eventually drawn. In 1988, Viv Richards’ team took the lead, and also won the series – the last time West Indies did so in England. For the millions in Caribbean the possibility of a repeat could be all too heady to imagine. The question now for Holder’s Windies is: can they keep their heads on Sunday?

Shohei Ohtani Had Some Incredible Reactions at the Plate During Game 2 vs. Phillies

The Dodgers withstood a late Phillies comeback to take a 2-0 lead in their National League Division Series on Monday night. Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-5 with a single and drove in what ended up being the game-deciding run to cap off a four-run seventh inning for Los Angeles.

Ohtani also had some priceless reactions that were captured on film during his five plate appearances.

For example, the reigning NL MVP made a pained face after fouling off a 2-2 pitch in the first at-bat of the game. That's a man who feels like he missed his pitch.

When he was punched out by the home plate umpire Adrian Johnson on the very next pitch, he held up his hand in disagreement, but decided it best to just give a little wave as if he were saying hello again. Perhaps he realized that Johnson had gotten the call right.

During his huge at-bat in the seventh, he provided another priceless reaction to a call he didn't seem to agree with. Either that or he was holding his helmet with all his might so that it would not fly off.

Ohtani and the Dodgers will attempt to finish the series at home on Wednesday night.

The IPL was supposed to have been much longer by now. Why isn't it?

Projections said the league would have many more matches per season but we’re still at 74 and that doesn’t look likely to change soon

Matt Roller23-Apr-2025Something almost unheard of happened in the world of sports broadcasting recently. The number of IPL games a season, stipulated to increase to 84 in 2025, according to the IPL’s lucrative media-rights contract of 2022, remained at 74 for the fourth successive year. The decision defied a global trend of incessant growth in sports leagues and events: football’s World Cup and Champions League have both swelled in recent years, while the Club World Cup is growing from seven matches to 63. But in the IPL, even an incremental expansion has been treated with caution, to the point of being deferred. This has been true across the league’s 18-year history. The IPL has become a commercial behemoth since its launch in 2008, but its season has only grown from 59 matches between eight teams to 74 between ten. In fact, the current format is two matches than that used in 2012 and 2013, soon after the IPL’s first expansion to include additional franchises.Related

IPL 2025 vs IPL 2024: Scoring rates dip as finishers lose their fizz

How can the IPL become a global sports giant? (2018)

A significant change has been the dramatic decline in the number of double-headers. The past two seasons have seen only 12 games played in the afternoon slot, less than one in six; back in 2011, that proportion was more than one in three. The result is a longer IPL window, with the season now stretching past nine weeks.Players much prefer evening games, as demonstrated by Ishant Sharma’s obvious discomfort after bowling in the 40-degree Ahmedabad heat on Saturday. But the decline in the number of afternoon games owes primarily to the decline in broadcast ratings for games that start at 3.30pm compared to 7.30pm – around 30-40% percent lower for the earlier-starting matches.

“The analogy used was a soap opera,” says Mike Fordham, who worked in the IPL from inception for the events company IMG and was later Rajasthan Royals’ chief executive. “There were big traditions in India of families watching soap operas, so the idea was that this would be your nightly entertainment – and you’d have to watch every game to know the full story.”In that sense, the IPL is different to the vast majority of sporting leagues around the world: it does not schedule fixtures that run simultaneously, barring occasional overlaps when an afternoon game overruns. It fuels the idea that the casual viewer is agnostic to whether their team is playing when they tune in, as long as they can watch some of their favourite players. The US business podcast recently released a four-hour IPL special, analysing the league’s growth, and was surprised that it has remained so short. “Looking at it from the outside in, there’s no way that in five-ten years from now there are not more games [played] during the IPL,” says co-host David Rosenthal. “All the economic forces are pointing that way.”Rosenthal believes that the IPL has been “really smart” in avoiding an expansion beyond ten teams. “Take the NBA: nobody cares about an average game on an average night. There’s 30 teams: who cares if the [Charlotte] Hornets are playing the [Atlanta] Hawks? Nobody. There’s a real sense right now in basketball of ‘these games don’t matter’. The IPL is the exact opposite.”The IPL’s current broadcast deal, signed in 2022, is worth US$6 billion across a five-year cycle, giving it the second-highest price-per-match valuation of any sports league in the world, behind the NFL. But that statistic relies on the scarcity of games: in absolute terms, there are four different European football leagues with media rights deals worth more than the IPL’s.Players aren’t big fans of afternoon games, and neither are fans•AFP/Getty Images”[The price-per-match valuation] is both incredibly, incredibly impressive and overstates the size of the IPL in terms of overall economic impact,” Rosenthal says. “To us, that’s why we think this league is clearly going to expand – and it shows the need to keep the right amount of restraint in not going to 30 teams, or playing six months of the year. But it is a good example of the potential of just how big this can get.”Some believe that there is no more juice to squeeze from the lemon: the valuation of the “IPL ecosystem” fell by 11.7% in the Indian firm D&P Advisory’s most recent report, which anticipates “a more conservative approach” in media-rights bids for the next cycle. That prediction follows the completion of the Reliance-Disney merger in India last year, bringing the IPL’s broadcast and streaming platforms together in a single entity.”Everyone knows that this is something that is here to stay, and IPL will only grow bigger,” says Santosh N, the firm’s managing partner. “But from a numbers perspective – some of the billion dollars that we talk about, with regards to media rights or title sponsorship – I actually think that maybe we ran too fast on some of these.”The alternative view comes from the league’s founder, Lalit Modi: “IPL is the golden goose that all want… Don’t worry, IPL will continue to be fiercely bid upon,” he posted on Instagram. Streaming of the league’s games has returned to a paid model this year after two seasons where every match was available for free. JioHotstar vice-chair Uday Shankar said last week that the app already has 200 million paid subscribers: “IPL is a very, very powerful asset.”Among the teams, there is an appetite for a longer season. The current 74-match format is lopsided: each team plays five of their nine opponents both home and away. Officials at multiple franchises told ESPNcricinfo that they would support a move to a full home-and-away season, increasing the total number of fixtures to 94, provided player availability can be guaranteed. One concern commonly raised around extending the season is that squad sizes would have to increase: “We also have to factor the load on the players due to the increase in matches,” Jay Shah, the ex-secretary of the BCCI, told the last year. It would also mean more time away for overseas players, an increase in team salary caps, and buy-in from national boards – an issue that would come across Shah’s desk in his new role as ICC chair. The IPL is pay-to-watch this season, unlike in previous years, when matches were free to stream•BCCIEight of the ten IPL franchises now have interests in at least one short-form league outside of India, demonstrating their desire for growth. But a significantly longer IPL – say, a six-month-long season – remains far-fetched at this stage, not least given the constraints of the global calendar. “It’s a tournament, really, more than a league,” Fordham says. “And despite what some seem to think, there’s no indication that the BCCI wants to destroy the international game.”There are in-built constraints to the IPL’s dates. The monsoon hits most of the lower half of India by mid-June, providing a hard stop at the far end, while ICC events – like this year’s Champions Trophy, and next year’s T20 World Cup – often run into early March. The Women’s Premier League has also run into March, though it will shift forward into a January-February window next year.”Either you need a bigger window or you will end up having more double-headers,” IPL chairman Arun Dhumal recently told the . Expanding the season by another week or two, bringing the start date into early or mid-March, would require international support and assurances from other boards that they would make their players fully available. There has long been speculation of a second, shorter IPL tournament taking place in the second half of the year, around September, which some believe could be a significant new revenue stream for franchises. The trouble, again, would be finding space in a crammed global calendar. The league’s most recent expansion, from eight franchises to ten, has been a qualified success. But while there is little doubt that more new teams would be hugely lucrative – “They’d sell for a billion dollars plus,” Fordham predicts – there is no prospect of another sale coming soon, as newcomers Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants continue to establish themselves. The lack of appetite for expansion in the near term also reflects the dominance of the league’s three biggest brands: Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have more Instagram followers between them than the other seven teams combined. “We have to look at the larger picture and keep in mind what works best for the league,” Dhumal said.Do fans – and therefore broadcasters- really want a longer IPL season? “Maybe India is different, but a personal view is that non-stop T20 cricket for six months could get very samey,” Fordham says. The IPL turns 18 years old this year – but adulthood alone does not guarantee maturity.

'That's My House': Red Sox Legend David Ortiz Reminisces on Fenway Park

Longtime designated hitter David Ortiz is synonymous with Boston's Fenway Park. Throughout his 16-year career with the Red Sox, he not only mashed countless home runs over the Green Monster, deep center, and the right field bullpens, but when it mattered most, you could always count on Big Papi to come up in the clutch.

Arguably his best moment at "America's Most Beloved Ballpark," however, happened with a microphone—not a bat—in hand. On April 20th, 2013, just five days after the tragic Boston Marathon bombings, Ortiz took to the infield and spoke directly to Red Sox fans, while unveiling the rallying cry that ultimately sparked their most unlikely World Series run.

"This is our f— city," he said through a booming cheer from the crowd. "And nobody [is] gonna dictate our freedom. Stay strong."

Speaking with as part of his partnership with to promote their 2025 Bowman Baseball collection, Ortiz explained what made Fenway Park so special to him throughout his career.

"That’s my house, man," he said with a smile. "That's my house. That's my house. Those hot summer days at Fenway, I used to love them. Because I knew people was coming in to have fun … We turned things around here in Boston. We started winning championships. While I played, we won three of them, and I think it was the best two decades of baseball here in Boston."

Ortiz also says he believes those Red Sox teams, forged at Fenway, laid the groundwork for Boston's baseball legacy. Said legacy was affirmed with another World Series title in 2018—their fourth since 2004.

More recently, however, the team has struggled, finishing .500 or worse in three straight seasons and failing to make it back to the postseason since 2021. Still, Ortiz knows best that Red Sox fans remain loyal through the highs and the lows:

"I think Fenway Park and the Red Sox Nation are the best fans worldwide because you guys are 100% in. I remember those cold, rainy days. We were getting our a— whooped, and you guys were still there screaming, pushing. [Those were] my best days."

Rangers "monster" is fast becoming the new Cerny and he's not even a winger

Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rohl has been a breath of fresh air since the club decided to bring him in as the long-term successor to Russell Martin at Ibrox.

The German manager, who left Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, has won all three of his Scottish Premiership matches in charge of the Light Blues, after they had won one of the eight games in the division prior to his arrival.

Rangers ran out 3-0 winners against Dundee at Dens Park in the Premiership on Sunday in their last match before the international break, and two players scored their first league goals for the club.

Mikey Moore, who is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, opened the scoring with a clinical finish into the bottom left corner from the edge of the box, before Djeidi Gassama scored a brilliant goal from distance in the second half.

It will be frustrating for the club that it has taken until the 11th game of the campaign for their first-choice wing pairing to score their first league goals of the season.

Moore and Gassama both need to add more consistency to their play in the final third so that they can begin to make up for the productivity that they lost when Vaclav Cerny left in the summer.

What Vaclav Cerny is up to since leaving Rangers

The Czechia international spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan with the Scottish giants from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, and caught the eye with his impressive performances on the right flank.

During his time with the Light Blues, the left-footed attacker contributed with 18 goals and nine assists in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, which shows that he offered a consistent threat in the final third.

12 of those goals and four of those assists came in the Premiership, per Transfermarkt, and this means that Moore and Gassama both have a long way to go if they want to match his goal output this season.

After his loan spell came to an end, Rangers were either unwilling or unable to sign him permanently, and the 28-year-old forward signed for Turkish giants Besiktas for a fee of around £6m.

Since his permanent move to Turkey, the former Light Blues star, who had so much success as a loanee at Ibrox, has showcased his attacking quality in the Super Lig.

As you can see in the table above, Cerny has been involved in five goals in eight games for Besiktas in the league so far, with an assist every other appearance on average.

These statistics suggest that the Light Blues messed up by not bringing him back to Ibrox on a permanent deal in the summer, as he is shining in Turkey, whilst the club’s current wide options have had slow starts to the 2025/26 campaign.

Gassama and Moore will need to step up their performances and provide more, in terms of goals and assists, in the coming months to prove that the Gers were right not to sign the Czechia international.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Whilst Gassama and Moore are trying to emulate Cerny’s success in the final third, there is another Rangers star who is quickly becoming this season’s version of the ex-Wolfsburg man, and he is not a winger.

The Rangers star who is becoming Ibrox's new Vaclav Cerny

The Light Blues swooped to sign Derek Cornelius on loan from Marseille during the summer transfer window, and he has been an excellent addition to the squad so far.

Like Cerny, the left-footed star is an Ibrox loanee who is shining in Scottish football. He has been particularly impressive since Rohl came through the door to replace Martin in the dugout, proving his worth at the heart of the defence.

Despite being a centre-back, Cornelius, who was branded a “monster” by international teammate Richie Laryea, has scored as many goals as Gassama and Moore in the Premiership for the Light Blues, with his one league goal.

Defensively, the Canada international has also been very impressive. Per WhoScored, he ranks first among central defenders in the squad for tackles made per game (2.1) and clearances per game (6.3), which speaks to how aggressive his defending is and how impressive his positioning is defensively.

On top of that, Cornelius has won 67% of his ground duels and 61% of his aerial duels in the Premiership so far this season, per Sofascore, which shows that he has been incredibly dominant in physical battles with opposition forwards on the deck and in the air.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed centre-back was virtually faultless defensively in the 3-0 win over Dundee on Sunday in the last match before the break, as he won 100% of his duels and was not dribbled past a single time.

Cornelius has started all three of Rohl’s league games in charge, which has seen Rangers win three times and concede one goal, and he won 13 out of 20 ground duels in those matches, per Sofascore.

These statistics suggest that he is on course to become the club’s new version of Cerny because he is a loanee at Ibrox who is already an incredibly important part of the team because of his fantastic performances.

Unlike Cerny, though, Rangers confirmed that they do have an option to sign the Canadian titan on a permanent deal at the end of the season for an undisclosed fee. This means that they can snap him up permanently, without having to negotiate a new deal with Marseille, next summer.

Not Gassama: Future "superstar" is Rangers' biggest talent since Tillman

This future superstar is Glasgow Rangers’ biggest talent since Malik Tillman was at Ibrox.

On current form, the Gers must surely already be thinking about exercising their option to sign him permanently next year, to avoid repeating the situation where they now look on in envy as Cerny shines elsewhere.
