Newcastle transfer news on Adeyemi

Newcastle United have reportedly knocked on the door to try and sign Karim Adeyemi.

The Lowdown: Hot prospect

Adeyemi is a player that is really emerging as one of the hottest prospects in world football at just 19 years of age.

He has already been called up three times to the senior squad for the Germany national team for crucial FIFA World Cup qualifying games, and coach Hanzi Flick has been full of praise for him, claiming that he is ‘ice-cold’ in front of goal.

With no fewer than 14 goals and two assists in 21 matches in total for RB Salzburg so far this season (Transfermarkt), it is hard not to agree, and he will no doubt only get better considering these performances are coming so early in his career.

The Latest: Newcastle knocked on door

As per Sport1, both the St. James’ Park faithful as well as Tottenham Hotspur have knocked on the door for Adeyemi.

However, a transfer to the North East is currently ‘out of the question’, as Liverpool, PSG, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund have all been credited with interest in the striker, so he may prefer to move to a club currently competing in the UEFA Champions League.

The Verdict: Unrealistic

Given that the Tyneside outfit are currently in a relegation battle, it seems very unrealistic that Adeyemi would move to them at this moment in time.

He has been coveted by some of the top teams around Europe, and so it is more likely that he will move to one of them.

There is no doubt that Adeyemi would add a lot to the Magpies squad, as his manager Matthias Jaissle has cited his ‘brutal’ speed and quality.

Callum Wilson is unsurprisingly the team’s top scorer this season with four goals, but he has been injured for some parts of their campaign, and so they need to bring in another goal scorer in their ranks to ease the burden off of him and replace him when he is out injured.

Adeyemi has already proven that he can score goals despite his young age, and the potential is certainly there for all to see. However, a move to the Toon seems unlikely for now.

Salisu must start for Southampton v Burnley

Southampton have a big chance to secure their second Premier League win of the season at the weekend with a home clash against Burnley next up for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side following on from their 1-0 win over Leeds United last week.

With eight league games played, the Saints have won one, drawn four and lost three, leaving them 15th in the table with seven points on the board.

Sean Dyche’s Clarets side head into the weekend clash at St Mary’s still looking for their first league win of the season, making it an important match for both teams.

Salisu should start v Burnley

One player who was involved in the victory over Leeds that we feel should be in the Saints’ starting XI to face Burnley is Mohammed Salisu, who has been described as “nasty” by Hasenhuttl in recent weeks in terms of competing in duels against opponents on the pitch.

The 22-year-old played the full 90 minutes against the Whites and made three tackles, three interceptions and two clearances, blocked one shot and won eight out of his 12 duels, ultimately earning himself an impressive overall match rating of 7.4/10 from SofaScore.

In addition to this, the £23k-per-week defender (according to Spotrac) has averaged 2.1 tackles and 3.5 clearances per game so far this season, showing how useful a defensive unit he has been for the Saints. Those figures indicate why he should be in the starting XI to face Burnley, as he could potentially bully their forward players with his no-nonsense nature.

Since joining the Saints in August 2020 from Real Valladolid for a reported fee of £10.8m, Salisu has made only 24 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Looking ahead to the Burnley match, though, we think he should definitely be in the starting XI and probably beyond that, particularly while fellow centre-back Jack Stephens is out recovering from the knee injury that he picked up during Southampton’s 0-0 draw against Manchester City last month.

Cricket hall of fame planned for Bowral

Don Bradman’s home town of Bowral will soon boast its own International Cricket Hall of Fame (ICHOF). The ICHOF – not to be confused with the unconnected ICC Hall of Fame – will open in late 2010 and will be a fully interactive, permanent exhibition of cricket, built at the Bradman Oval.”Bradman Oval has always been viewed as the spiritual home of cricket as it is the scene of Don Bradman’s early triumphs,” Michael Ball, chairman of the Bradman Foundation, said. “Now the complex will be enlarged and enhanced by a splendid new building which will house the International Cricket Hall of Fame, an interactive museum based on the international game of cricket with a focus on the greats of the game from all over the world.”The aim is to create a “living centre of cricket” that will be dedicated not only to the game’s history but also to the more modern versions of the sport. The project is being financed by a federal government grant to recognise last year’s centenary of Bradman’s birth.”Importantly, for all international cricketers who have represented their countries in all forms of the game, the ICHOF will honour them for their participation at the elite level,” Ball said. “The ICHOF will also look at many other aspects of the game including umpiring and game technology, international media delivery, sports physiology, spectator experience, global venues, and the game’s administration.”

Younis happy to have Razzaq back

Younis Khan, the Pakistan captain, has welcomed the return of allrounder Abdul Razzaq to the Pakistan side after a two-year exile caused by his decision to opt for the Indian Cricket League. Razzaq was fast-tracked into the national Twenty20 squad in England shortly after quitting the ICL, but his participation in the opening Super Eights match against Sri Lanka at Lord’s today is highly unlikely as he arrives just hours before the game.”This game is not possible but I think he will manage the last two games,” Younis said on the eve of the game. “He is a good name in world cricket and in Twenty20 he is a fantastic allrounder.”He is a senior guy and his return will be good for Pakistan cricket. He would be in any team in the world.”Razzaq was one of several former ICL players granted amnesty by the Pakistan Cricket Board a few weeks ago shortly after the Indian board took the initiative to allow players to return from the unofficial league. Razzaq was named in the original list of 30 probables the PCB had sent to the ICC in early April – before the BCCI announced the amnesty – but the board made a U-turn and scratched his name off because the ICC objected to his ICL status. However, when Razzaq confirmed that he had snapped ties with the ICL, the PCB named him as an emergency replacement for the injured seamer Yasir Arafat.Razzaq is likely to play the next Super Eights match against New Zealand at The Oval on Saturday.Younis also took the opportunity to clarify some unusual comments he had earlier made on Twenty20 cricket, comparing it to “WWF” and saying that it was better to take it easy and have fun in this format. He defended his comments and urged everyone not to take them too seriously.”I am a simple guy. Sometimes people think I am wrong because when we lose I am still laughing,” Younis said. “You must look forward, if you lose or win. This is life. Sometimes you have good days, sometimes you have bad days.”

Southampton: Forster’s price has plummeted

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster is heading towards the expiration of his contract at St. Mary’s and could leave on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

The shot-stopper’s current deal expires in 2022 and should he not sign a new deal, he will leave the club after eight years on the south coast, having joined from Scottish giants Celtic in 2014.

He is currently playing second fiddle to Alex McCarthy at Southampton, a role he has filled for the last few years at the club. McCarthy has started 25 or more Premier League games in each of the last three seasons, showing that he has been the first-choice for the majority of the time in those campaigns.

This came after Forster had been a regular for the Saints for four seasons, including the 2016/17 campaign when he featured in all 38 Premier League games. In the summer of 2018, after he played 20 times in the league the previous season, Forster was valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.

Forster’s value then proceeded to drop off a cliff, as did his Southampton form. In the 2018/19 season, the Englishman played just four games in all competitions, twice in the Premier League, as the Saints brought in Angus Gunn from Manchester City – he played 12 league matches and competed with McCarthy for the number one spot.

Celtic then re-signed Forster on a season-long loan for the 2019/20 season and he enjoyed a solid spell with his former club. He kept 14 clean sheets in 28 Scottish Premiership games and returned to Southampton ready to challenge for his place in the side again.

However, he went on to play just eight Premier League games last term as McCarthy, once again, prevented him from being the number one. Forster was unable to recapture his early Southampton form, despite a full season playing for Celtic, and that is what has led to him currently being a back-up.

Forster’s value now stands at £2.7m according to Transfermarkt. This means that his price has plummeted by 80% since he lost his place as the number one at St. Mary’s in 2018. He has fallen off a cliff in terms of his appearances on the pitch and there have been no signs that his situation will change any time soon.

McCarthy has only conceded one goal in his last three Premier League matches and remains Hasenhuttl’s go-to between the sticks. This means that Forster’s best route to getting regular game time could be to leave in January or depart on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Campbell drops Antonio claim at West Ham

Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell has said West Ham United manager David Moyes ‘will be fuming’ after something he’s seen.

The Lowdown: West Ham dealt blow…

Amid star striker Michail Antonio’s sensational start to the season, West Ham have now been dealt a blow surrounding the Jamaica international.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-2/” title=”West Ham latest news…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, during the Irons’ stalemate at Southampton last weekend, Moyes’ star striker was shown a second yellow card in the dying seconds following a reckless challenge on Moussa Djenepo.

As a result, West Ham will be without the 31-year-old for their home game against Premier League title contenders Manchester United.

The Latest: Campbell makes claim…

Speaking to FI, Sky pundit and former English top-flight striker Campbell has made a West Ham claim involving Antonio and Moyes.

Indeed, he says that Moyes ‘will be fuming’ with the incident and West Ham ‘could struggle’ without his pace and power.

“Of course, David Moyes will be fuming because it’s so late on in the game,” Campbell explained.

“Antonio has been top class this season. To have your most influential player at the top end of the pitch suspended is not ideal.

“It is going to give someone else a chance. But without that pace and power that Antonio possesses they could struggle.

“He is a handful for anybody. They might miss him big time.”

The Verdict: Big miss…

Bagging four goals and three assists over his handful of Premier League starts already this season, Antonio will be a big miss for Moyes against his former club this weekend.

The striker has also averaged the second-most shots on goal per 90 this season (4.5), just behind Liverpool superstar Sadio Mane (WhoScored), and it will be interesting to see how the Hammers deal with his absence.

Jarrod Bowen could be a contender to play in Antonio’s usual role, especially considering how brilliant he has been in the final third – making the most key passes per 90 (2.3) out of West Ham’s entire side so far (WhoScored).

Forget Struijk: Leeds’ Harrison was poor v Liverpool

In a game marred by a bad injury to Harvey Elliott, Leeds United endured yet another disappointing afternoon in the Premier League as they lost 3-0 at home to Liverpool.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side went two goals behind before Pascal Struijk was sent off for his challenge on Elliott, and Sadio Mane would later rub salt into the wounds in the dying embers of the game.

While Struijk’s tackle and whether it was deserving of a red card will no doubt the main talking point – Gary Neville on co-commentary for Sky Sports insisted that the severity of the injury swayed the decision – it was Jack Harrison’s performance that let Bielsa down the most.

The winger has endured a frustrating campaign thus far, failing to score or assist in the Premier League at all, and was once again well below-par at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

As per Sofascore, he lost four of the five duels that he was involved in, made just 15 passes (less than Illan Meslier) and conceded possession on ten separate occasions – only three others lost the ball more, but they all played the full 90 minutes.

Harrison also had no shots on goal and saw only one of his four crosses meet its intended target, and perhaps much more frustratingly, seemed to leave left-back Junior Firpo high and dry on many occasions.

Whether it was a ploy from Bielsa to have him stay upfield to try and keep Trent Alexander-Arnold back or not, it back-fired spectacularly, with Harrison failing to come back and help out his left-back – he made no tackles or interceptions as Firpo was left to deal with Liverpool’s rampaging right-hand side, and he didn’t really lay a glove on the excellent Mohamed Salah.

It was no surprise then that he was eventually hooked mid-way through the second-half – the second time he has gone off this season – with Dan James coming on, and with the former Manchester United now in the building, Harrison has a real job on his hands to keep his place in the starting XI.

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for Leeds Live, Beren Cross gave him a five, saying: “Did not give Alexander-Arnold a headache going in either direction throughout the game. Had the odd half-opening in the final third, but never found the delivery or final act to turn it into something dangerous.”

So while Struijk’s red card might open him up to some criticism, it was Harrison’s woeful performance on the left that arguably made him Leeds’ real villain on the day.

Meanwhile, Leeds are plotting a January transfer swoop for this star…

Oman crush Bhutan to secure title

Odds-on favourites Oman crushed Bhutan by 213 runs in the final of the Asian Cricket Council Challenge in Chiang Mai. Put into bat, Oman amassed 322 for 9 and then dismissed Bhutan for 109.The decision to insert Oman caused raised eyebrows as the conditions looked perfect for batting, and so it proved. Maqsood Hussain, whose 76 runs in the tournament included 72 in boundaries, cracked 14 off six balls and from then on it was one-way traffic. The key moment came when Adnan Ilyas was dropped when on 8 by the wicketkeeper in the day’s third over. He raced to 50 off 38 balls and brought up his hundred off 95, and by the time he was bowled by legspinner Jigme Singye for 113 the game was all but beyond Bhutan. “We were waiting for the mistakes,” Bhutan’s coach Damber Singh Gurung admitted, “But we made them.”Bhutan did well to keep things under some semblance of control after Ilyas departed, the last 16 overs only producing 107 runs for the loss of six wickets, but the damage had been done.Oman’s bowlers were as tight as their batsmen had been rampant. Bolstered by an attacking field of four slips, Farhan Khan, who was named bowler of the tournament, took 2 for 19 and Hemal Mehta almost took a hat-trick as he finished with 3 for 22.Opener Kumar Subba set out his stall to bat through the innings, grinding out 40 off 103 deliveries, and at the halfway point Bhutan were 65 for 4. He was eventually beaten for pace by Awal Khan and the victory was completed in the 43rd over.In the third/fourth place play-off, Thailand, who were widely expected to make the final until their shock defeat by Bhutan, ended on another disappointment as they lost by eight wickets to Maldives. Thailand were skittled for 60 as daft run-outs coupled with Abdulla Shahid, who took 4 for 13 off his ten overs, took their toll. Maldives lost an early wicket but a second-wicket stand of 44 between Ahmed Hussain and Ahmed Hassan ensured there were no more alarms.

Dean ref for Wolves v Man Utd

Many Wolves fans have been left fuming as some news emerged ahead of their game at home against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

As per the official website of the Premier League, it has now been confirmed that Mike Dean will be the on-field referee for the game, while Stuart Attwell will be on VAR duty.

Incidentally, Dean has given more penalty kicks to Man Utd (20) then any other club over the course of his career so far, and the Red Devils are the second-most profitable team in terms of wins (43) behind Chelsea when he is officiating (Transfermarkt).

He has often been accused by the media of making games all about him, and has been involved in controversial Wolves matches because of this (Birmingham Mail).

These members of the Molineux faithful fumed as the news was confirmed on Twitter, with one WWFC supporter even going as far as to claim that it is ‘dreadful’:
