Nuno must axe Spurs disaster vs Rennes

Tottenham Hotspur kickstart the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League group stages with a trip to France to face Stade Rennes later this evening and manager Nuno Santo has plenty to ponder in terms of team selection.

The north London outfit head saw their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season come to a crashing end after they were defeated 3-0 by Crystal Palace, so the Portuguese coach will be looking for a reaction in a competition that they are amongst the favourites to win.

Spurs are facing plenty of injury and availability problems.

South American trio Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso are not back in the country just yet, whilst this game may come too soon for the likes of Heung-min Son, Steven Bergwijn and Eric Dier.

One of the biggest takeaways from Saturday’s disappointing result was that the midfield Nuno deployed just doesn’t work, though there is an easy solution to that problem.

He opted for Harry Winks to partner Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp in the engine room but that turned out to be very one-dimensional and not balanced whatsoever.

In fact, the 25-year-old Englishman was hooked after just an hour, which should be rather damning on his chances of starting over in Rennes this evening, especially with the more creative and technically gifted Tanguy Ndombele back in the squad.

It was only four years ago that Winks ran the show during Spurs’ shock win over Real Madrid, where he outshone former Spurs midfielder Luka Modric in the Champions League.

Soon after, Mauricio Pochettino lauded him as the “perfect” midfielder, comparing him to Barcelona duo Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

But after his lacklustre display against Palace this weekend, The Times’ Gary Jacob described the £18m-rated Hotspur Way youth product as ‘stale’, whilst club legend Gary Roberts dubbed him an “average player” back in June.

Although Winks made 91% of his passes, these were mainly sideways and behind, without much effort to get forward. By comparison, the Eagles’ loan star Conor Gallagher made himself available all over the pitch and would’ve been the perfect option to have in there alongside Hojbjerg and Skipp.

Nuno must look to bounce back and kickstart Spurs’ quest for glory in Europe with a positive performance in France, and that just won’t happen if Winks is starting in midfield.

It’s time for him to be ruthless and axe him from the XI later this evening.

West Indies on verge of history as tempers fray in Antigua

This Test match has simmered for days, but in an extraordinary hour after tea, it erupted in a fury

Andrew Miller18-Feb-2009Close West Indies 240 and 371 for 6 (Chanderpaul 103*, Banks 28*) need another 47 runs to beat Australia 240 and 417This Test match has simmered for days, but in an extraordinary hour after tea, it erupted in a fury. Just as Australia looked set to complete an unprecedented clean-sweep in the Caribbean, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul belted West Indies back into contention in a flurry of boundaries, bouncers and bad-feeling. It was Test cricket at its rawest and – until the crowd stepped in with a volley of debris from the stands – at its best.

By the close, the equation was simple – Australia needed four wickets to complete one brand of history, and West Indies needed 47 runs for an even more improbable achievement of their own. Only two sides have ever chased more than 400 runs for victory, but no-one has ever managed a total as high as 418. There is nothing dead about this rubber. After three years and 57 innings of near-misses, Sarwan finally registered his first Test century against creditable opposition (he scored 119 against Bangladesh in December), and Chanderpaul returned to his bat-flinging best, with a rollicking 103. By the close Chanderpaul had added an unbeaten 83 for the seventh wicket with the admirable Omari Banks, who played hard and straight to reach 28, and West Indies had Australia distinctly rattled. Had they been able to reach a conclusion this evening, only one side could have won it.It was a far cry from the morning session. West Indies had begun with cautious optimism after a resourceful opening stand of 47 on Sunday evening, but Devon Smith and Chris Gayle could add only another two runs between them. When Daren Ganga was trapped lbw by a brute of an inswinging yorker from Glenn McGrath, West Indies were 74 for 3 and the white paint was dripping.Only one man, it seemed, could save the day. And for half a session, while Brian Lara was treating Stuart MacGill with barely disguised contempt, the improbable looked ever-possible. Lara clobbered consecutive sixes over long-on to bring up his fifth half-century of the series, but MacGill had the last laugh, suckering Lara with a flighted delivery outside off stump, which ripped out of the rough to clip the top of middle (165 for 4).By this stage, however, Sarwan was flowing. He was eased into the session by Waugh, who bowled a lengthy spell after lunch as the big guns rested up ahead of the new ball. Chanderpaul was quickly up to speed as well, and Sarwan went to tea on 67 not out, knowing full well that nearly would not be enough this time. And then it all kicked off.It started innocuously enough, with a few muttered words between balls, but before long McGrath and Sarwan had become involved in a furious finger-pointing altercation, and umpire Shepherd was forced to intervene. Moments later McGrath had to be relieved on the fine-leg boundary by Matthew Hayden as the crowd got stuck in as well.Sarwan refused to allow himself to be rattled, and took out his frustration by carving a brace of MacGill long-hops past point for four to move into the nineties. Chanderpaul responded to the raised stakes in glorious fashion as well, swinging Jason Gillespie for two fours in an over to bring up his fifty from 73 balls. Waugh responded by recalling Brett Lee to the attack, but Sarwan clubbed him first-ball through midwicket for four to move onto 98.Australia took the new ball to unsettle Sarwan, but he was not to be denied, and drove Lee down the ground to complete his century. He punched the air and roared with delight, and despite their fury, some of the Australians were able to put aside the match situation to shake Sarwan’s hand.Lee however was not one of them, and in his next over, the Antigua Recreation Ground exploded. Sarwan slashed his first ball wildly over gully for four, but just when discretion would have been the better part of valour, he attempted to hook a venomous bouncer and top-edged straight back to Lee, who immediately ran across to McGrath to celebrate. Sarwan was gone for 105, and Australia’s pressure had finally told.

Australia’s false summit: Brian Lara is bowled by Stuart MacGill

Lee’s very next delivery was a phenomenal bouncer that screamed past Ridley Jacobs and clearly clipped something on the way through. Umpire Shepherd agreed it was glove, but replays proved it had been Jacobs’s elbow that had borne the brunt. Had he done the natural thing and showed the pain, Jacobs would surely have been reprieved. It was too much for the crowd, who bombarded the ground with bottles. West Indies had been a mere 130 runs adrift with six wickets standing, but suddenly their hopes of victory had vanished.Banks, however, has demonstrated his obduracy on several occasions already this series, and after a brief rain-break which cooled the tempers a fraction, he provided Chanderpaul with vital support – although he was indebted to a rare lapse from Martin Love, who dropped him at second slip when he had made just 2. When Chanderpaul took 14 runs from a Gillespie over, including a hooked six, West Indies had reduced their target to double-figures.That was just the start for Chanderpaul, who rampaged to his eighth Test century as MacGill melted under a barrage of boundaries, and with three overs remaining, he swung MacGill to long-leg and kissed the ground in triumph. Banks got in on the act as well, cracking MacGill for an exocet of a straight drive, before playing out his final over of the day with a maturity beyond his 20 years. West Indies had lacerated 143 runs in a session, and Australia’s dream was hanging by a thread.Andrew Miller is assistant editor of Wisden CricInfo in London.

Miandad questions rationale of ICL ban

Javed Miandad, the former Pakistan captain and now director-general of the PCB, has joined a steadily growing voice of concern against the ban on ICL players

Osman Samiuddin21-Nov-2008Case against Yousuf put on holdIn a further indicator of a shift in the PCB’s thinking on the ICL, the legal case it developed against Mohammad Yousuf, the latest Pakistan player to join the ICL, has been put on hold.Yousuf joined the Lahore Badshahs earlier this month, without having told the PCB about his decision. The board responded by tearing up his central contract; they also initiated legal proceedings against him for breach of contract and to claim legal costs the PCB incurred while trying to resolve the earlier mess Yousuf had created by signing for the ICL before turning his back on them in the hope of an IPL contract. “We’ve put the case on hold for now,” a board official told Cricinfo. “The thinking is that if we pursue the case against Yousuf, then what about the other Pakistan players in the ICL who had contracts with us?”A number of players, such as Imran Farhat, Abdul Razzaq and Mohammad Sami had central contracts with the board before they signed up for the ICL in September 2007.Javed Miandad, the former Pakistan captain and newly appointed director-general of the PCB, has joined a steadily growing chorus of concern against the ban on ICL players and the marginalisation of the unrecognised Twenty20 league. Miandad believes there is immense “public pressure” on the PCB to bring ICL players back into the Pakistan fold and “past decisions by past [PCB] administrations” have “nothing to do with the new set-up”.The PCB banned all players contracted by the ICL but Miandad said it’s a policy the new board administration must reconsider, keeping in mind the “best interests” of Pakistan cricket.Pakistan has suffered badly from the ban on ICL players imposed by boards around the world, essentially to back the BCCI in its dispute with the league and its owners. As many as 19 Pakistan players – a mix of current and former internationals – are currently appearing in the ICL and the bans on them have severely depleted Pakistan’s reserves.”There is a lot of public pressure on the PCB to bring these players back from the ICL,” Miandad told Cricinfo. “The [ICL] players themselves are ready to represent Pakistan. The IPL, the ICL and all boards need to sit down and really sort this issue out,” Miandad said, joining former captains-turned-administrators Arjuna Ranatunga and Clive Lloyd in expressing the need for a resolution to the issue.Miandad’s comments do not yet indicate a wholesale change in the board’s policy on the issue. The previous PCB administration, under the chairmanship of Nasim Ashraf, banned players readily, in swift appeasement of the BCCI. But it is believed the current board is open to rethinking, or at least questioning, the stance.”Past decisions were taken by past administrations,” Miandad said. “They have nothing to do with this new set-up. It is something we must look at and discuss, and find out whether that policy [of the ban] had any benefit to it. We have to look at our best interests.”Miandad placed the current bans in the context of past actions, such as the bans on players who traveled to apartheid-era South Africa. “Those bans were based on an intelligent policy. What was happening there was abhorrent. What is the intent behind this ban?”Ultimately, this is not an issue of nations but of cricket itself, Miandad said. “Even Indian players are suffering. It isn’t just Pakistan players. This is a loss for cricket and cricketers and a resolution has to be brought in, in a respectful way.”With a number of ex-cricketers now in prominent positions in the board, the matter has been discussed informally inside, though it has yet to be done so as part of an official agenda. Statements, such as those given by Miandad, might be part of a new strategy to shake up the BCCI-enforced status quo.But Miandad’s employers are keen to examine the issue pragmatically as well, which means essentially they will be guided by a number of legal considerations. “The ICL is still not recognised by the ICC but the ICC believes that if the matter goes to litigation, they are not too optimistic about the case,” an official said. “It is about restraint of trade essentially. And what is happening in Sri Lanka where domestic bans have been lifted and in the UK through the Kolpak ruling, that will also have an effect. If you can have one private Twenty20 league why not two?”We will wait and see and be guided by our legal advice for our view on the matter but these factors will play a role.”

West Ham: Fans react to Jesse Lingard update

West Ham United have been given a massive boost in their pursuit of Manchester United attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard, after the Red Devils reduced their asking price for the England international [Daily Star].

Enjoying a superb loan spell on loan in East London during the second half of the 2020/21 campaign, Lingard registered 14 goal contributions in 19 appearances; nine goals and five assists [Transfermarkt].

Now, he could have a decision to make on his future following recent reports.

Manchester United have reduced his price-tag from £35 million to just £20 million, leaving the door ajar for a return to the London Stadium for the Carrington youth product [Daily Star].

As you can imagine, loads of West Ham United diehards took to Twitter to rejoice at these latest developments.

West Ham United fans react:

Crystal Palace offered Layvin Kurzawa

Crystal Palace have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Paris Saint-Germain defender Layvin Kurzawa.

What’s the story?

According to French outlet Foot Mercato (as relayed by Sport Witness), PSG are keen to offload the 28-year-old this summer, and Selhurst Park could be the ideal destination for him.

The report claims that new Palace manager Patrick Vieira has ‘validated’ the left-back’s profile, although no formal offer has been made as of yet.

Kurzawa was believed to be close to joining Ligue 1 outfit Lyon earlier in the current window until Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri joined them on loan, leaving the France international searching for another club.

Patrick Vieira needs him

The Eagles have successfully secured the signatures of several new acquisitions in recent weeks, but they have not yet replaced Patrick van Aanholt following his departure to Turkish giants Galatasaray.

That has left 21-year-old Tyrick Mitchell as the only natural left-back in Vieira’s current first-team squad, leading to the former Nice boss scouring the market for cover and competition for the academy graduate.

And Kurzawa may be the ideal addition, providing an experienced alternative to Mitchell, who has proven his capability at the highest level following six successful years at the Parc des Princes.

Since arrival in Paris back in 2015, the £10.8m-rated defender has made 153 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s charges, scoring 14 goals and providing 23 assists, winning 13 major trophies along the way.

However, the arrival of Juan Bernat and Abdou Diallo has severely limited Kurzawa’s game time over the last couple of campaigns, limiting him to just 24 league starts since the beginning of 2019/20.

As a result, it appears the former Monaco ace is amongst the reported 10 players who were made available for transfer following the arrival of six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi as PSG look to recuperate some funds and trim their wage bill.

It remains to be seen whether Palace chairman Steve Parish will make a move for Kurzawa in the remaining days of the window, but it’s certainly something he should strongly consider given how light Vieira is in that area of the pitch.

Three games without a victory have marked the beginning of Vieira’s era in south London and the arrival of a serial winner could provide the spark that Palace are currently lacking.

And, in other news…Parish must complete Palace move for “extraordinary” £20m gem, fans would love him

Big Picture

The Indian Test team has been in form over the last couple of years but the task before them over the next three weeks is a huge one. Sri Lanka are a formidable team at home – since India’s last tour in 2001, the Sri Lankans have won 11 out of 14 series, losing only to Australia and Pakistan, and drawing a two-match series against New Zealand. It’s been seven years since India’s last Test series here, but the settled nature of both teams means many of the protagonists are the same. A couple of Indians who missed out in 2001 could have huge roles to play this time: Anil Kumble is the leader of the team and the bowling attack, while Sachin Tendulkar continues to be the key man in the middle order and is within touching distance of becoming the highest run-scorer in Test cricket.Sri Lanka’s successes at home have largely been built around the simple strategy of steady run-accumulation and a relentless diet of high-quality spin bowling. They have the resources for both in this series: the opening pair is inexperienced, but Sri Lanka have plenty of class in the middle order, while Ajantha Mendis lends a touch of mystery to their spin attack.

Form guide (last 5 Tests)

Sri Lanka LWDDW
India WLDDW

Watch out for

Muttiah Muralitharan: The focus has been exclusively on Mendis throughout the build-up to the Test, but Muralitharan will probably be the bigger threat, especially at a ground where he has taken 20% of all his Test wickets. In 22 matches, he has a rich tally of 149 wickets here at slightly more than 21 apiece. Most of the Indians are fairly adept players of spin, but that didn’t stop Murali from taking 11 wickets at this ground the last time the two teams met.Gautam Gambhir: He has made a regular spot for himself in the shorter versions, but this is Gambhir’s chance to make the Test opener’s spot his own as well. His Test career has been more stop than start so far, but these might be the best conditions for him to make his mark: the bounce shouldn’t bother him too much, while he has given enough indications in the past that he is adept at tackling high-quality spin.

Team news

Most of the Sri Lankan team chooses itself, and Mahela Jayawardene, the captain, confirmed that Tillakaratne Dilshan had sealed the No. 6 spot ahead of Chamara Silva, who scored two half-centuries in the tour game against the Indians. With Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando and Farveez Maharoof all unavailable, the tussle for Chaminda Vaas’ new-ball partner is between Thilan Thushara and Nuwan Kulasekara. Thushara, who played both Tests in the West Indies earlier this year, should get the nod. Jayawardene suggested there was a chance of playing both those seamers because of the wet weather which has been forecast.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Michael Vandort, 2 Malinda Warnapura, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 Muttiah Muralitharan, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Thilan Thushara. The Indian team has a settled look to it. Gambhir gets another chance to resurrect his Test career, but the rest of the batting line-up chooses itself. The return of Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh should boost the bowling attack.India (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Sourav Ganguly, 6 VVS Laxman, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 Anil Kumble (capt), 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ishant Sharma.

Pitch & conditions

The pitch looks good to bat on but with thundershowers forecast over the next five days the seam and swing bowlers could come into the picture as well. Both teams have the quality to exploit the turn which should be on offer on the last couple of days.

Stats & Trivia

  • In the last 13 Tests at the SSC, Sri Lanka have won ten times and lost just once, to Australia in 2004.
  • Sachin Tendulkar, who needs 172 runs to become Test cricket’s highest run-getter, has an excellent record in Sri Lanka: in eight innings he averages 111.67 with four centuries and two fifties.
  • Muttiah Muralitharan averages 32.47 against India, but in seven Tests against them at home, he has taken 36 wickets at an averages of 26.36. At the SSC against India, the average drops to 21.72, including match figures of 11 for 196 when the two teams last played here.
  • Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara have both done superbly at the SSC – Jayawardene averages 79.30 from 19 Tests with eight hundreds, while Sangakkara averages 62.85 from 14 Tests.

    Quotes

“We can’t control the hype that is being built up. It’s a great opportunity for a young guy who had come from humble beginnings. He has the luxury of Murali and Vaas around him to take on the responsibility. What we want Ajantha to do is go out there and enjoy himself. There are a lot of expectations from a lot of other people but from the team’s point of view there is hardly any expectation.”
“Not just Mendis, every bowler is discussed. It’s his first Test, let’s not forget that. The pressure is on him. As a youngster you are obviously nervous. If you look at our batting strength, most of them have played more than 100 Tests. The two bowlers who have done extremely well over the years are [Muttiah] Muralitharan and [Chaminda] Vaas and we can’t discount that we need to be concerned about them.”

  • Celtic: Noel Whelan drops James Forrest verdict

Noel Whelan has backed Celtic winger James Forrest to be a pivotal player for new manager Ange Postecoglou in the upcoming season.

The Lowdown: Celtic gear up for 2021/22 season

With competitive football upon the Hoops once again after the off-season, many onlookers near and far will be intrigued to see how they fare during the forthcoming campaign.

Bringing in new faces will be important to this process, although getting the best out of those who had a season to forget in 2020/21 will also take precedence.

One man who would definitely fall into the latter category is Forrest. Although he is now fresh out of self-isolation and back in training, Tuesday’s crucial UEFA Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland may come too soon for the 30-year-old [Daily Record].

The Latest: Whelan expects Forrest to be ‘like a new signing’

However, Whelan has been very complimentary about the impact he expects Forrest to have under Postecoglou this year in an interview with Football Insider, stating:

“It will be a big boost to have James Forrest back in general. Not just if he can make it for that game [FC Midtjylland].

“He missed so much of last season. Postecoglou needs everyone back fit as soon as possible because the new season is very nearly upon us. They need continuity as soon as possible.

“To have Forrest back is great news because we know how important he is to the side. He is very experienced and knows the club inside out.

“When you are starting a new season with a new manager you need these kind of characters in the dressing room. To have him back is like a new signing, even if Tuesday comes too soon for him.”

The Verdict: Forrest’s return will be a massive boost to everyone at Celtic

Whelan correctly points out the quality and consistency that the Scotland international has produced on the biggest of stages for Celtic throughout his career. Across his time at the club, Forrest has registered 186 goal contributions in 412 fixtures for the Hoops, with 93 goals and 93 assists [Transfermarkt].

Enduring an injury-ravaged 2020/21, he could only muster five goal contributions from 17 appearances, with four goals and one assist [Transfermarkt].

Never shy to get involved in offensive situations, he averaged 1.9 shots per game in the Premiership whenever he did feature, proving a constant bugbear for opposition defences [WhoScored].

Moving forward, the reintroduction of Forrest to Celtic’s starting XI should be a massive boost to everyone connected with the club due to his diverse range of capabilities. Hopefully he will be back to his best after his personal torment last season.

In other news, Celtic have opened talks to sign this England international.

Big PictureBangladesh’s convincing 96-run win over UAE in their tournament opener will boost their confidence, but over the last year both teams have been desperately searching for success since excellent World Cup campaigns. Sri Lanka reached the final of that tournament, but their form has slumped considerably over the last year – they’ve lost 12 out of 22 games, while three of their eight wins were against Bangladesh at home. During this period, they’ve lost an ODI series at home to England, been knocked out of the triangular CB Series before the finals, and been beaten 2-0 by West Indies.Bangladesh’s World Cup heroics – they beat India and South Africa and made it to the Super Eights – suggested that they might have turned a corner, but subsequent events have confirmed their Caribbean capers were only a flash in the pan: leave aside three wins against Ireland and one against UAE in their Asia Cup opener, and Bangladesh have lost 18 out of 18 since that tournament. Fifteen of those defeats have been by margins of at least five wickets or 50 runs, which indicates they haven’t even been competitive against the top sides.Sri Lanka will go into Wednesday’s clash as huge favourites, and not just because of their Asia Cup record: they have won the tournament three times, and have never lost to Bangladesh in seven encounters. Under Mohammad Ashraful, Bangladesh have slipped back to their old, erratic ways. They romped to a comfortable win against UAE, but the Sri Lankans will be an altogether different challenge. For Sri Lanka, it’s an opportunity to regain their winning momentum before the tougher challenges that await them later in the tournament.Form guide (Last 5 completed ODIs; most recent first)

Sri Lanka LLWLLWatch out for …Raqibul Hasan: A handy middle-order batsman, 20-year-old Raqibul has already scored three half-centuries in ten ODIs, including two 80-plus scores in his last two innings.Kumar Sangakkara was in sparkling form in the IPL, but hasn’t topped 33 in his last six ODI innings and is due a big score.Ajantha Mendis had confused the West Indian batting line-up during the ODIs there, and in conditions expected to favour spin, Bangladesh could well be his next victim.Team newsBoth teams are missing a couple of important players. Sri Lanka are without Lasith Malinga and Farveez Maharoof, both of whom are nursing injuries. Bangladesh, meanwhile, are missing two important batsmen – Aftab Ahmed has a finger injury, while Shakib Al Hasan, their most prolific batsman in the series against Pakistan, has skipped the tournament to sit for academic exams. The absences will offer opportunities to others to prove themselves at the international level: Nuwan Kulasekara, who played the ODIs in the West Indies, should get another chance, while the return of Dilhara Fernando, who missed that tour, will add bite to the bowling attack.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Mahela Udawatte, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Kaushalya Weeraratne, 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 Dilhara Fernando, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Nuwan Kulasekara. The unavailability of Shakib should give another opportunity to Alok Kapali, the 24-year-old allrounder who was away from international cricket for almost two years before playing in the Kitply Cup earlier this month.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Nazimuddin, 3 Mohammad Ashraful (capt), 4 Raqibul Hasan, 5 Alok Kapali, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Dolar Mahmud, 9 Mashrafe Mortaza, 10 Abdur Razzak, 11 Shahadat Hossain.Stats and trivia Sanath Jayasuriya has scored four hundreds in Asia Cups, and needs 158 to become the first batsman to 1000 runs in the tournament. In four Asia Cup innings against Bangladesh, he has managed two centuries and a fifty, for an average of 98 at a strike rate of 99.66. Sri Lanka’s seven wins against Bangladesh in Asia Cups have all been by margins of at least seven wickets or 71 runs. In their last clash, Jayasuriya hammered an unbeaten 101-ball 107 as Sri Lanka won by ten wickets with 99 balls to spare. Jayasuriya’s 20 wickets is the most taken by any bowler in the Asia Cup. Bangladesh have lost 20 out of 22 matches in the Asia Cup. Their only wins have come against Hong Kong and UAE.Quotes”In a short tournament of two weeks the momentum is very important. We have to make sure we have that momentum going because things can happen so quickly. We need to make sure we respect them [Bangladesh] for who they are and play a proper game.”
Mahela Jayawardene dismisses all talk of complacency and wants his players to be ready for battle from the first ball.”If we can regularly score 240, which we rarely do, we can be competitive and hopefully win a few games.”
Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, spells out the gameplan for his team.”I knew it was a matter of time before I returned to form and I hope this form remains with me in the tougher games to come because we want to do well in this Asia Cup.”
After scoring his second ODI century against UAE, Mohammad Ashraful wants to repeat the performance against stronger teams

Leicester City linked with Leon Bailey

Leicester City have been linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey as the Foxes look to bolster their first team squad even further.

    What’s the story?

Premier League rivals Aston Villa have also been tracking the highly-rated 23-year-old in recent weeks, but Dean Smith’s side aren’t the only Premier League outfit in the running, according to 90min.com.

Everton, Wolves and Southampton are also credited with an interest in Bailey alongside the Foxes, with Leverkusen reportedly set to demand £30m for their prized asset.

    Brendan Rodgers needs him

The Jamaica international has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting attacking talents in recent years and enjoyed his most productive season yet in 2020/21.

Bailey has often struggled with consistency throughout his career, but he appeared to make significant progress on that front last season, bagging 15 goals in all competitions. He also provided 11 assists in his 40 appearances for Leverkusen, showcasing his tremendous creative talent as well as his goalscoring ability.

The diminutive forward terrorises opposition defences on a regular basis in Germany, using his electrifying pace and dribbling ability to devastating effect, assets which would provide an enormous boost to Leicester’s forward line.

Glowing reviews from Ronald de Boer and Rudi Voller sum up why. The Dutchman once commented: “He’s so fast it’s not normal. His speed, combined with his technique, is very rare. Exceptional. He has no weak points.”

Voller added: “He’s got extraordinary pace, he’s very skillful with the ball, and he will give further impetus to our attacking department.”

After the arrivals of Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumare and Ryan Bertrand at the King Power Stadium, Brendan Rodgers is thought to be targeting a centre-back and right winger for the remainder of the window.

With Marc Albrighton currently the only natural option on the right-hand side of the attack, Rodgers desperately needs another player in that position if he’s to finally lead the Foxes into the Champions League.

It remains to be seen whether the club’s hierarchy back up their interest with a concrete offer, but if the transfer budget allows, Leicester’s director of football Jon Rudkin must swoop for Bailey before a domestic rival secures his services.

Celtic: Hoops keen on Liel Abada

Celtic are interested in signing Israel international Liel Abada, according to The Scottish Sun.

    The Lowdown: Abada profiled

Abada is 19 years of age and is primarily a right winger. He can also play on the left or through the middle and has already made 76 senior appearances for current employers Maccabi Petah Tikva.

The youngster, who has one international cap to his name, has scored 20 goals and registered 10 assists at club level and is under contract until 2024.

Abada’s Transfermarkt valuation has rocketed from £293,000 to £2.7m in just over a year, and it seems that Celtic are now keen on his services.

The Latest: Israeli sources share update

Israeli sources, relayed by The Scottish Sun, have claimed Celtic are interested in the 1.68m (5 foot 6) winger, along with clubs in Belgium, France and Greece.

Israeli agent Dudu Dahan has been given a mandate by Maccabi Petah Tikva to secure a transfer, with The Scottish Sun touting a £3.5m fee for Abada.

The teenager has left Israel to discuss a transfer with interested clubs, but it remains to be seen whether Celtic are one of those.

    The Verdict: Wingers are needed

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is in need of some attacking additions to bolster his first team squad ahead of the new season.

He has just James Forrest, injury-plagued youngster Mikey Johnston and the returning Maryan Shved as senior wide options ahead of a Champions League qualifier later this month.

Dahan has helped Celtic to sign a number of players in recent years, including Nir Bitton and Ismaila Soro, so should the Hoops firm up their interest, they could be in a good position to get a deal over the line for the in-demand Abada.
