McDermott returns as Test bowling coach

Craig McDermott has been recalled to mentor Australia’s Test match bowlers on the eve of the home Ashes series

Daniel Brettig17-Oct-2013Craig McDermott has been recalled to mentor Australia’s Test match bowlers on the eve of the home Ashes series, as part of a new split configuration that leaves his successor Ali de Winter in charge of the ODI and Twenty20 formats. Personal reasons had ended McDermott’s highly successful first stint as bowling coach in 2011-12, but he is now back in position to guide the pace attack sharing the heavy touring load with de Winter.Following McDermott’s instructions to keep the ball up to the bat and tempt the drive, Peter Siddle, James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc, Ryan Harris and Ben Hilfenhaus all enjoyed significant success during his earlier tenure. During that time Australia won series in Sri Lanka, the West India and at home to India while also taking 20 wickets regularly in drawn series against South Africa and New Zealand. The team’s results have fallen away since, though the pace bowling attack has remained Australia’s strongest suit, performing capably in England despite a 3-0 series margin. McDermott took on a range of roles after his departure, coaching Ireland’s bowlers at the World T20 in Sri Lanka later in 2012 and resuming work at the Centre of Excellence, where he had first shown promise as a mentor to the crop of young bowlers passing through Brisbane. He also started his own network of coaching academies, but had been eager to return to the national team for some time. The appointment of McDermott and de Winter to oversee separate formats may not be the last such decision, as the team performance manager Pat Howard seeks to specialise coaches to seek better results but also more chance for support staff to avoid the not-so-merry-go-round of constant touring.”Appointing coaches to specific roles is something the Team Performance Department has been considering for some time,” Howard said. “Given the amount of cricket played now in all three forms of the game, we’ve been considering our coaching structure to get the best out of the players across the various formats.”We also feel that with the amount of touring now it is extremely difficult for every member of the support staff to be on every tour. As we’ve seen in more recent times we’ve swapped our support staff at particular moments to ensure everyone is fresh and energised and the feedback on that has been very positive.”For his part, de Winter warmed to the greater focus of his new role, particularly with next year’s World T20 and the 2015 World Cup creeping closer by the month. “I enjoy both forms of the limited overs game and welcome the challenge of working with the bowlers on specific preparation and tactical awareness for each of these formats,” de Winter said. “We have some work to do between now and each of the world events and I’m looking forward to focussing on contributing to returning Australia to the number 1 ranking in T20 and ODI cricket.”

Glamorgan gave themselves a fighting chance of qualifying for the Yorkshire Bank 40 semi-finals after easing to a 68-run win over Leicestershire at Swansea. The win over the Foxes was their seventh in the competition this season and their most comprehensive. Glamorgan now have to beat Yorkshire at Headingley in their final Group C match on Monday and hope other results go their way to make the last four.In front of a big crowd, Glamorgan cracked 303 for 6 from their 40 overs with Chris Cooke top scoring with 85 from 76 balls. In reply Leicestershire could only make 235 for 6 with Niall O’Brien making 92.For Glamorgan there were also useful contributions from Murray Goodwin, who struck 48 from 19 balls, including four sixes and Mark Wallace and Gareth Rees. The only Leicestershire bowler to emerge with credit was off spinner James Sykes, who claimed 2 for 37 from his eight overs.Glamorgan, who won the toss, were given a positive start by Wallace and Rees who amassed 84 in the opening 12 overs – 60 from the opening eight-over Powerplay – before Wallace was bowled by Ben Raine. Cooke and Rees continued the good opening, reaching 100 in the 17th over. But with the total on 148 Rees went leg before to Sykes, who struck again to have Jim Allenby caught at shot extra-cover.Cooke reached his 50 from 49 balls and struck Rob Taylor over midwicket for six as Glamorgan reached the 200-mark in the 32nd over.Glamorgan lost captain Marcus North caught behind but that heralded Goodwin’s productive innings. He began with a four and glance for six over deep square-leg, followed by a lofted off-drive for six before Cooke was caught at long-off off Raine.Goodwin carried on his assault hitting a no-ball from Raine for six and then scooping a four to long-leg, before clipping Shiv Thakor for yet another maximum. He seemed on course to equal the record of Stewart Walters, who posted a 19-ball fifty against Lancashire in 2011 at Colwyn Bay, but in looking for a six he was caught on the deep midwicket boundary off Nathan Buck.Leicestershire suffered a major blow in their reply when they lost captain Josh Cobb in only the second over after being caught behind off Jim Allenby. In the next over Greg Smith was also caught behind, this time off Michael Hogan, to leave Leicestershire struggling on 12 for 2.In trying to push the score along Ned Eckersley was bowled by Allenby as the visitors further slipped to 28 for 3. That became 53 for 4 when off-spinner Andrew Salter bowled Thakor. By the halfway stage of their Leicestershire had limped to 68 for 4 needing 11.75-an-over.O’Brien reached his 50, but from 84 balls with only two fours, and he was followed to the landmark by Michael Thornley from 53 balls with a six and four fours before he holed out to midwicket five overs from the end. O’Brien perished eight short of his century caught at mid-on off Allenby, who finished with figures of 3 for 37.

Welegedara's chances improve for Champions Trophy

Chanaka Welegedara’s prospects of traveling to England for the Champions Trophy have improved, after a scan on his landing foot and ankle revealed no breaks or fractures. He has not been fully cleared however, and will be assessed in the next two days before a final call is made on whether he can join the touring squad, which departs on Sunday.Welegedara left the field in pain after having bowled 2.4 overs in a domestic one-day match last Saturday, and has not played or attended training since.”The scans showed that there was only inflammation around the area,” team manager Michael de Zoysa said. “He will go through some fitness tests and will be putting weight on it, so we have to wait and see.”Welegedara, 32, had been the leader of Sri Lanka’s Test-match pace attack, but has been plagued by injury in the last 12 months, in which he only completed one Test match. He strained his groin playing England in March last year, before tearing a shoulder muscle before the Pakistan series in July. He recovered in time to travel to Australia at year’s end, but tore a hamstring early in the second Test in Melbourne, and has not played any international cricket since. Largely regarded a Test specialist, Welegedara has not played limited-overs international cricket since June 2010.He is one of four specialist fast bowlers named in the 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy, with Lasith Malinga, Shaminda Eranga and Nuwan Kulasekara also picked. Farveez Maharoof, who is not in the national squad but may have been a potential replacement, was also injured during the match and will likely be unavailable for two weeks.

No segundo, sentimos demais a questão física.

É a terceira rodada.

Dhaka go top after record-breaking total

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAnamul Haque ended a run of lean scores with an 83•AFP

Anamul Haque got over his lean patch in the BPL with a sparkling 83, helping Dhaka Gladiators to an 88-run win over Rangpur Riders. After a half-century in the opening game, Anamul hadn’t made a major contribution until today; he went after the Riders’ bowlers to help his side to a BPL record team score. With this win the Gladiators lead the points table through a better run-rate, ahead of second-placed Sylhet Royals, who have also won six games. It was the Riders’ fifth loss in as many games.Anamul struck five sixes and six boundaries in his 46-ball effort, and when he fell in the 19th over, Gladiators had closed in on 200. With Shakib Al Hasan, Anamul added 82 for the third wicket before the whirlwind 77-run fourth-wicket stand with Darren Stevens. In both these partnerships, Shakib and Stevens attacked more than Anamul, though the quieter role suited the youngster. Gladiators were boosted by Tillakaratne Dilshan’s arrival, but the Sri Lankan was left stranded in the middle of the pitch after he was deceived by debutant Murad Khan.Mohammad Ashraful gave a catch to the only man behind him on the leg side, but Anamul, Shakib and Stevens made up for those losses. Shakib made 42 off 24 balls with two sixes and four boundaries, while Stevens hammered three fours and two sixes in his 22-ball 42.The Riders promoted Kevin O’Brien to open the innings but the Ireland allrounder was run out after he had started off promisingly with two sixes, one of which reached the second tier of the grandstand after he had pulled Mashrafe Mortaza in the first over.Junaid Siddique and Nasir Hossain tried to force the pace in the Powerplay overs but both fell cheaply, giving no further leverage to the Riders’ chase. Shakib took three wickets while Mashrafe and Ashraful took two.

O atleta manifestou a lesão ainda no primeiro tempo do jogo contra o São Paulo, no último domingo.

Nicol wants to bat longer

Rob Nicol, the New Zealand opener, has said it is about time he ensures he plays a long innings at the top of the order, not merely get starts

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Jul-2012

Rob Nicol: “I need to start producing scores of 100+ for the side and batting in partnerships”•Associated Press

Rob Nicol, the New Zealand opener, has said it is about time he ensures he plays a long innings at the top of the order, not merely get starts. Since making a century on ODI debut in October last year, Nicol, 29, has scored another ton and two fifties but in his last eight innings, has failed to convert starts into something substantial. His scores in this ODI series, in which New Zealand have been defeated and are trailing 1-3, read 14, 15, 59 and 35.”The reality of it is, pretty much during the whole series, I’ve got myself into positions but haven’t been able to push on for the side,” Nicol said on the eve of the fifth ODI in St Kitts. ”I’m steadily finding my feet (at international level), but I’m a realist and I know time is of the essence.”I need to start producing scores of 100+ for the side and batting in partnerships, like JW (coach John Wright) says. I’m really hoping that I can forge something with someone tomorrow.”New Zealand were outplayed in the first four matches of their tour of the USA and the Caribbean, beaten comprehensively in the two T20s in Florida followed by the first two ODIs. However, since then, there has been a significant improvement. They won the third ODI before putting up a fight in a losing cause in the fourth.’You’ve got critiquing from every point of view, even within your own side, so if you’re not positive yourself then you’re never going to get any enjoyment out of the game,” Nicol said. ”We put a concerted effort up against them again (in the fourth match) and I think, if a couple of things had gone our way, we could have got over the line and we’d be fighting for the series.”But you can always massively dissect a game, but in reality in the heat of the moment you’ve got to go with your gut. We’re slowly getting there, hopefully tomorrow we can get over the line.”

Rajshahi, Khulna to clash in final

A round-up of matches from the National Cricket League

Mohammad Isam24-Apr-2012Rajshahi Division rallied on the final day to beat Sylhet Division by 119 runs at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, and reached the National Cricket League final. They overtook Sylhet in the points table to finish second.A maiden five-wicket haul from part-timer Farhad Hossain in the post-tea session Sylhet ensured a Sylhet collapse in their pursuit of 330 for victory. Farhad, who bowls off-spin, removed Golam Mabud and Sylhet’s Indian recruit Rahul Dewan in the space of five overs before picking three more tail-end wickets. Abul Hasan, however, took advantage of the open swathes left by Rajshahi, who put as many as six fielders in catching positions during the last hour.Mizanur Rahman set the tone for Rajshahi with his 105 and shared a 186-run opening stand with Jahurul Islam on the first day. Mizanur scored his second first-class century. Sylhet fought back on the second day through Enamul Haque Jr’s six wickets, Rajshahi declaring their first innings on 387 for 9.Sylhet’s approach was predictable but their aim to grind out the bowlers backfired as skipper Farhad Reza and left-arm spinner Sanjamul Islam kept it tight and picked wickets regularly. Apart from Nadif Chowdhury’s 61, none of the Sylhet batsmen took advantage of their starts.Khulna Division, who will take on Rajshahi in the final, drew their final second phase game with Dhaka Metropolis at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium. Khulna, the table-toppers, took a more cautious approach as they had already qualified for the final.Anamul Haque, the opener, was the hero for Khulna, making 193 runs with the help of 27 boundaries and two sixes. He was trapped leg-before the next day, just short of a double-ton, by Tareq Aziz to end an innings that lasted more than five hours.Taposh Ghosh, the left-hand allrounder, also notched up an unbeaten 111 during Khulna’s 618 in the first innings and in Dhaka Metro’s reply, Tasamul Haque, too, struck a century. Both players recorded their second first-class centuries in first-class cricket. The match only had an academic interest when Khulna didn’t impose the follow-on despite leading by 330 runs. They batted again and Imrul Kayes struck 117 off 181 balls. There was one more century left to score and Shamsur Rahman duly picked up a ton off 88 balls in Dhaka Metro’s second innings. Both matches endured a day’s break due to a general strike across the country.
