Three reasons Newcastle could win the EFL Cup

Barring a hiccup against Blackburn Rovers last weekend, Newcastle’s season has gone as expected, with Rafa Benitez’s boys sitting two points clear at the top of the Championship.

Following their relegation from the Premier League, Newcastle look set to return to the promised land – but they also remain in contention to secure a first major domestic trophy since 1955.

Rafa’s priority is surely securing promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt, but the Toon are preparing for an EFL Cup quarter-final clash away to Hull City with the intention of victory.

Following last weekend’s set-back – a 1-0 loss at St James’ Park – Benitez will be hoping to avenge the defeat by securing the Toon a place in the semi-final – something many feel Magpies fans deserve after so many years of disappointment.

So although the history of the League Cup has been dominated by top flight sides, FootballFanCast are backing the second-tier Magpies as shock candidates to go all the way, and here are THREE reasons why.

Wednesday’s clash with Hull City will provide inspiration for the Newcastle players with the knowledge some Premier League heavyweights have already departed the competition in earlier rounds.

With the chances of domestic success coming so irregularly for the Magpies, victory over Hull would guarantee a semi-final place for the Toon and the possibility of a trophy.

That 61-year wait for silverware may finally come to an end with many teams of superior quality having already been knocked out..

Benitez knows how to win trophies

At the moment, Newcastle currently have a manager with the know-how to achieve success against the odds.

The Spaniard has made a career out of coming out victorious against the odds with his sides – his achievements at Valencia (La Liga), Liverpool (Champions League), and Chelsea (Europa League) all occurred when he was expected to fail.

Indeed, at Newcastle, he can also prove many of his critics wrong once again by ending the club’s trophy drought.

Luck of the draw

Newcastle face an underperforming Hull City side who are struggling for both confidence and results.

The Magpies, on the other hand, have lost just one game in 14 and are high on belief. A victory would ensure a semi-final place and a two-legged contest against a drawn team.

As most teams would fear travelling to St. James’s Park, the Toon could feasibly overcome the odds again and a final at Wembley would provide the ultimate setting for a giant-killing.

Five flops Liverpool still need to get off the wage bill

Liverpool have been one of the Premier League’s busiest clubs in the transfer market this summer, splashing out around £80million on seven signings – namely, Roberto Firmino, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez, Nathaniel Clyne, James Milner and Christian Benteke.

But room must always be made for new arrivals and that’s where the Reds have fallen short during the transfer window. Despite the likes of Steven Gerrard, Rickie Lambert and Raheem Sterling all leaving the club, the Mersey outfit’s first team squad is rather inflated; currently, they have 43 players with official squad numbers.

So with summer deadline day now less than two weeks away, Brendan Rodgers has plenty of work cut out if he’s to streamline his squad – or perhaps more importantly, the Liverpool wage bill – for the 2015/16 season.

With that in mind and being the ever-helpful bunch we are at Football Fancast, we’ve listed FIVE flops Rodgers should be putting on a one-way train to… well, anywhere that isn’t Liverpool!

FABIO BORINI

Let’s start with the obvious – Fabio Borini. ‘Il Bomber’ was Brendan Rodgers’ first ever signing as Liverpool manager, in what now seems like a painfully obvious precursor of how debatable the Ulsterman’s transfer record would become at Anfield.

The Italy forward has managed just 25 league appearances for the Red during his three years on Merseyside, scoring only twice, and actually found his best form away from the club – particularly, his ten-goal-40-game loan spell at Sunderland during the 2013/14 campaign.

Borini had the option to leave Liverpool last summer, with the Black Cats and QPR both baying for his services, but surprisingly refused and declared his determination to claim a place in the Reds’ starting Xi.

That’s seen the 24 year-old practically ostracised by Brendan Rodgers, who issued him just three Premier League starts last term despite the glaring inadequacies of Liverpool’s strike force, so a departure this summer seems somewhat inevitable.

Sunderland are eyeing the 5 foot 11 attacker once again, but they now face competition from Inter Milan.

LUCAS LEIVA

The term ‘flop’ doesn’t truly apply to Lucas Leiva; he’s made 275 appearances for Liverpool and with the exception of the odd injury lay-off, has always been a useful squad member as one of the few genuine holding midfielders within the Anfield ranks.

But nonetheless, the Brazilian’s game-time has taken a significant hit since Brendan Rodgers took the Liverpool helm three summers ago and the arrival of James Milner, in addition to Emre Can’s re-emergence at the heart of midfield, appears to be the final nail in the proverbial coffin.

Reports earlier this week alleged Besiktas are on the verge of making a €4million offer for the 28 year-old, although we’re still waiting on confirmation that the Reds have actually received it.

That being said, the media put Leiva on the chopping block practically every summer. With two terms remaining on his current deal, he might decide to stick it out at Liverpool for one more year.

Jose Enrique

Another Liverpool stalwart who has served the club well but now outstayed his welcome; Jose Enrique boasts 132 appearances for the Reds yet only 18 have come during the last two seasons.

Injures have been a significant factor but they’ve also left the Spaniard a shadow of the marauding left-back he once was – and he now faces an improbable fight with Alberto Moreno and summer signing Joe Gomez to become Anfield’s resident No.3 once again.

The 29 year-old vowed to stay on Merseyside and continue competing for a first team role earlier this week. But also admitting to being made to train alone by Brendan Rodgers, it seems very unlikely he’ll be near a match day squad any time soon.

With just a year remaining on Enrique’s contract, Liverpool will accept practically any bid at this point in the transfer window.

TIAGO ILORI

When Liverpool signed Tiago Ilori two summers ago he was billed as one of the most exciting defensive prospects in Europe, famed for beating Cristiano Ronaldo’s sprint record at Sporting Lisbon.

But there’s been a worrying lack of progress from the Portugal U21 since, failing to make a mark during his loan spells with Granada and Bordeaux to register just 21 league appearances in 18 months for both clubs combined.

Now 22, Ilori is essentially Liverpool’s fifth choice centre-back for the season, behind Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure – and potentially behind Joe Gomez and Emre Can in the pecking order as well.

Barring serious injury to the aforementioned names, it seems unlikely the 6 foot 3 centre-half will get a look in next term – despite recently telling the press he’s determined to make himself a regular in the starting Xi.

Whether it’s another loan deal or permanently, Liverpool should look to offload the flopped youngster this summer.

MARIO BALOTELLI

The rather sad yet rather hilarious tale of Mario Balotelli, who arrived at Liverpool accompanied by such monikers as ‘unmanageable’ and ‘a child trapped in a top-class footballer’s body’ and now leaves Anfield well… essentially under the same description.

There’s no question Brendan Rodgers knew he was taking an enormous gamble when signing the Italy international for £16million last summer and and as the bookies will tell you, enormous gambles don’t tend to pay off.

Indeed, many warned the striker would flop but few predicted quite how badly; just four goals in 24 appearances, including a harrowing one in 14 in the Premier League, and continuous PR disasters – not least including swapping shirts with Real Madrid’s Pepe at half-time and praising Raheem Sterling’s debut performance for Manchester City. Oh dear.

Rodgers lost all faith in Balotelli some time ago. The real challenge this summer has been finding a buyer for a player on big wages who has now left all of his previous employers on rather sour terms.

Watford were quick to denounce rumours of a loan bid earlier this week but a switch to Sampdoria, where the 25 year-old would be reunited with former Azzurri strike partner Antonio Cassano, is still a possibility.

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes reveals 'doubtful' England star Millie Bright is still struggling as a result of pre-World Cup knee injury ahead of Paris FC Champions League clash

Chelsea captain Millie Bright may have to miss her team's Women's Champions League clash against Paris FC because of a knee injury, Emma Hayes says.

Defender had knee surgery in early 2023Chelsea being cautious with number of gamesBright could pull out of England teamWHAT HAPPENED?

The defender has featured prominently for Chelsea this season, making seven appearances across the Women's Super League (WSL) and Champions League. However, Blues coach Hayes says a knee issue she sustained before the World Cup earlier this year is still an issue as Bright must manage her workload after undergoing an operation.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT HAYES SAID

Hayes told reporters ahead of Thursday's European clash: "Millie's 50/50 for tomorrow. Having so many games in quick succession, we're managing her loading. She's very much in doubt for tomorrow. Preparation going into the World Cup wasn't ideal. She probably rushed herself back and she's also come back after the World Cup and quickly into the Chelsea season. Perhaps she needed a little bit longer. Her knee is a little bit angry at the minute. It is not anything too detrimental. We're just listening to her body. We're going to take decisions on a day-by-day basis."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bright was named in the England squad for the matches against Netherlands and Scotland next month. However, Hayes added that there is a "strong possibility" that the 30-year-old will have to pull out of the camp.

Portugal player ratings vs Liechtenstein: Cristiano Ronaldo keeps on finding the net! Ageless captain provides vital spark as sluggish Selecao snatch narrow win

The Al-Nassr star bagged his 128th goal in international football to snatch a win after an overall poor showing

Cristiano Ronaldo played hero to salvage an otherwise unsteady Portugal performance, grabbing the opening goal in a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein. Although the Selecao kept a clean sheet — and outshot their opponents 29-5 — this was hardly a crisp showing. Martinez's side often struggled to carve out chances, and will feel this should have been a far more comfortable win.

Portugal created little in the first half, often frustrated by a diligent defensive setup from the hosts. The Selecao tallied 14 shots, but only put four on target in the opening period. Ronaldo came closest at the end of the half, driving an effort directly at Benjamin Buchel in stoppage time.

The captain's opener was something of a throwback, the winger scampering down the left channel before rifling a shot past a helpless goalkeeper. Joao Cancelo added a second soon after, curling home a fine finish after a Buchel blunder. Goncalo Ramos had a third ruled out to cap off a slightly frustrating night.

Portugal really should have made this easier. With nearly 200 spots separating these two sides in the FIFA rankings, the Selecao shouldn't have needed so long to find the net, or waited so long to pull away after that. Still, with Euro 2024 qualification nailed down, this was effectively a runout for a side that might be in with a shout to make some noise next summer — especially if their main man is still leading the line.

Jose Sa (6/10):

Made a smart stop to maintain his side's 2-0 lead. Was otherwise uninvolved.

Antonio Silva (6/10):

Nowhere to be found on Liechtenstein's only chance. Did well in keeping the ball moving.

Ruben Neves (6/10):

A makeshift centre-back on a day when his side didn't have much defending to do.

Toti Gomes (6/10):

A solid debut, even if he had very little to do.

Diogo Jota (7/10):

Perhaps misused on the left, but still made things happen. Assisted Ronaldo's opener. Much more comfortable when moved to a central position.

Bruno Fernandes (6/10):

Created two chances, swung in some dangerous deliveries for Ronaldo and Ramos. Visibly frustrated after the odd miscue. Pretty much a typical performance.

Bernardo Silva (5/10):

As lively as ever on the ball, yet never found the killer pass. Deservedly removed after an hour.

Joao Cancelo (6/10):

Plenty of quality when dribbling, but his passing was off at times. Redeemed himself with a lovely finish for Portugal's second.

GettyAttack

Joao Felix (5/10):

Started slowly, but looked far livelier as his side seized control of the contest after the break. Still, he's slowed down after an emphatic start to the season.

Goncalo Ramos (4/10):

Given his chance to recapture form while leading the line. Missed a free header after 30 minutes, and tried to do too much throughout. Had a goal ruled out. Off the pace, at the moment.

Cristiano Ronaldo (8/10):

Fired at the goalie twice towards the end of the first half. Made no such mistake in the second, and took his goal wonderfully.

Subs & Manager

Ricardo Horta (5/10):

Not really involved.

Vitinha (6/10):

Pulled the strings nicely in midfield.

Bruma (6/10):

A threat down the left. Deserves another look.

Joao Mario (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Joao Neves (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Roberto Martinez (7/10):

Went for an astoundingly attacking lineup, which made sense given the opposition. His side weren't exactly spellbinding, but he will take the win. Job done.

Already a mainstay of the LA Galaxy squad with 18 first-team appearances, midfielder Efrain Alvarez has been described by team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the "best talent in MLS".

The 17-year-old has previously represented the United States at youth level and has not ruled out switching allegiance again as he looks to make the most out of his international career.

Already a household name in France, Adil Aouchiche equalled Michel Platini's goals record at a single UEFA tournament by netting nine times at the summer's European Championship in Ireland.

What made that achievement even greater was that he did it from central midfielder, underlining just why there is so much excitement surrounding his ability in attacking areas.

The 17-year-old has already made his first-team debut for Paris Saint-Germain but could soon be on the move as his contract is set to expire in June.

With Sebastiano Esposito having been withdrawn from Italy's squad to help cover for the absence of Alexis Sanchez at Inter, the burden of carrying the team's attacking threat will fall on Nicolo Cudrig.

The teenager left Udinese for Monaco in the summer of 2018 before spending last season on loan in Belgium with Cercle Brugge.

He is now back with the Ligue 1 side and looking to establish himself in the principality.

With Reinier Jesus blocked from participating in the tournament by Flamengo, the hosts will be looking to Kaio Jorge to fire them to glory.

Kaio's physical strength and pace have already resulted in some pundits comparing him to Manchester City and Selecao striker Gabriel Jesus.

Injury-crippled Hampshire turn to Young

Ireland’s seam bowler Craig Young has joined Hampshire on a short-term loan deal in their first response to a crippling early-season injury crisis

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Apr-2016Ireland’s seam bowler Craig Young has joined Hampshire on a short-term loan deal in their first response to a crippling early-season injury crisis.Young, 26, will get an outing in Hampshire’s Second XI Championship match against Somerset at the Ageas Bowl, starting on Monday, in the hope of forcing himself into contention for the home Championship match against Middlesex on May 1.Young was previously on the books at Sussex but had a frustrating time with injuries and never graduated beyond 2nd XI cricket. He has played 24 times for Ireland across three formats.Ireland coach John Bracewell said: “Craig will continue his progression as one of Ireland’s front-line bowlers after a very good spell, especially over the last 12 months.”With the North-West Warriors not having any championship cricket until late May and Ireland not in action until June, we feel the timing is ideal for Craig and hope he can aid Hampshire’s significant injury problems.”Young said: “The request has come from completely left field. But it’s great to be given a chance, which I hope I can grab with both hands.”Two years ago, he suggested that he had the pace and bounce to fill the void left for Ireland by Boyd Rankin. He took five wickets on ODI debut, against Scotland, and was Ireland’s top wicket-taker on a World Cup acclimatisation tour in Australia and New Zealand.Hampshire’s current injury crisis includes fast-bowler Fidel Edwards, who suffered a fractured ankle at Headingley this week whilst fellow seamers Reece Topley, Gareth Berg and Ryan Stevenson are all still not available for selection due to injury.Hampshire’s director of cricket Giles White told The Echo: “Craig comes as a recommendation from John Bracewell and, in light of the current injury problems we have, this gives us a good opportunity to take a closer look at him.”

Começamos o jogo muito bem, trocando passes, o time bem espaçado. A bola não entra, começa a bater aquela ansiedade. Finalizamos trinta vezes.
