Chanderpaul offers full value for Derbys

On a green pitch under a cloudy sky and with Andre Adams at last fit enough to return, you could hardly blame what Wayne Madsen had secretly dreaded but Derbyshire are only two down

On a green pitch under a cloudy sky and with Andre Adams at last fit enough to return, there can have been little doubt in Chris Read’s mind about what to do when he won the toss. Bottom-of-the-table Derbyshire, the gap between themselves and the pack beginning to yawn just a little, have yet to bowl first in a Championship match this season and if skipper Wayne Madsen had secretly dreaded what might unfold you could hardly blame him.Yet after a day restricted by rain to 65 overs, Derbyshire are only two down. Madsen is well set alongside Shivnarine Chanderpaul in an attempt to reprise their record-breaking partnership against Surrey two weeks ago and the positive signs that coach Karl Krikken took from drawing that game might be more than wishful thinking. “The last couple of weeks we have started to compete and it’s not a foregone conclusion that we are going to go down,” he said. “There are nine games to go and we’ll keep fighting.”Much of Krikken’s renewed optimism stems from Chanderpaul’s enduring quality and professionalism. Approaching 39 and with pretty much every box ticked in his list of career ambitions, Chanderpaul is playing for his fourth county and his decision to sign a well-rewarded contract with a newly-promoted underdog might be open to cynical interpretation, yet Krikken could not be more insistent that Chanderpaul is giving maximum value. He made his first century for Derbyshire against Surrey and is on course for another here. After their stand of 265 against Surrey, they have put on 145 so far here, with Chanderpaul on 78 from 88 balls, and the Nottinghamshire attack feeling a little chastened. But Krikken says Chanderpaul is about more than runs.”He has been immense for us on the field but it is also his work-rate behind the scenes, with the youngsters in the squad in the nets,” Krikken said. “He is a great cricketer and the time he spends in the nets and the way he thinks about his game is what we want our younger players to emulate.”When you are playing on result wickets it is not easy but now we are getting some flatter wickets he is coming into his own. But he has not moaned at all because he knows we have to try to get results.”It is important to the team, to the younger players, to see your captain and your overseas player standing up to be counted, so their form has come at the right time.”In the earlier games we just weren’t consistent enough. We were having a good session but then throwing it away with a poor one and we know we can’t keep doing that. But in the last couple of weeks there have been signs that we are starting to compete.”Chanderpaul in his customary way gathered his runs with deceptive swiftness. He may not be flamboyant but his clever placement ensures steady singles and as ever he was able to gather boundaries through timing rather than force. It was a contrast from Chesney Hughes, who launched Derbyshire’s best start to an innings so far with gusto, his boundaries coming usually with a flourish. He had nine in his 59 and it was a shame that he paid the price for being too extravagant, mishitting an attempt to pull Harry Gurney to the ropes and cursing himself as the ball flew tamely to mid-off.At least Gurney could feel compensated. He had seen Hughes, on 48, and Godleman, with 19, dropped off consecutive balls by Samit Patel at slip.Adams picked up his sole reward when Godleman followed one outside off stump and gave Read a regulation catch but neither he nor any of his colleagues has found much in the pitch. The ball swung a little under the morning’s cloudy sky but for once here conditions have not been as read. Krikken admitted Derbyshire would have bowled first, too. Madsen, this time, will be pleased he did not have the choice.

Amla, bowlers leave Pakistan on brink

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsHashim Amla’s 81 underpinned a total that proved well beyond Pakistan•AFP

A taxi driver in Birmingham has bought a ticket to watch Pakistan every time they played in the city for the last 30 years, except this time. He simply did not have the confidence in their batting to bother. It turns out he was right.South Africa lived to fight another day in the Champions Trophy as their bowlers, woeful against India but wolfish against an fragile line-up, defended a barely-par total. In the absence of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, Lonwabo Tsotsobe led the pack with maturity while debutant Chris Morris added energy and Ryan McLaren backed them up at the death.Misbah-ul-Haq was again Pakistan’s lone ranger and again he could not take them over the line. He lacked support from everyone except Nasir Jamshed. By contrast, South Africa’s anchor, Hashim Amla, enjoyed small contributions throughout the middle order. In an almost exact replica to the England-Australia match that was played here on Saturday, Amla’s 81 was as valuable as Ian Bell’s 91 but it may never have swelled to that had Pakistan held on to an early chance. Amla was on 7 when he slashed at a short, wide delivery off Mohammad Irfan and presented a tough but takeable catch to Umar Amin at point. Amin dived, got fingers to it and then he watched it slip through. It was a moment that taught him a tough lesson: don’t’ drop Amla.Over the last year, England, Australia and New Zealand have paid for that mistake. Pakistan may do so twice. They put Amla down at the Wanderers in March, he went on to score 122. Both then and now, South Africa came out winners.Conditions could not have been more different to Johannesburg than they were in Birmingham. There it was a belter of a track on which runs rained. Here it was a sluggish surface that did not facilitate a free flow. Both teams started slowly, Pakistan ended that way too.Mohammed Irfan and Junaid Khan kept South Africa to 36 runs in the first 10 overs and did not take wicket, although they could have had Amla. Morris, Tsotsobe and McLaren restricted Pakistan to 18 for 2 in the same period, which immediately made Pakistan’s task more difficult.By the 19th over, their required run rate had already ballooned to six an over and considering no one had scored at that rate at any stage of the game, it seemed unlikely Pakistan would. But Misbah marshalled proceedings in his usual, calm way. He saw off the good balls – and there were many which South Africa bowled – and waited to take advantage of anything that was occasionally tossed up or slightly wide.AB de Villiers did a fine job of rotating his bowlers and was spoilt for choice with three seamers and three spinners. He used JP Duminy before Robin Peterson and it paid off, when Shoaib Malik was bowled by a delivery that rolled back onto his stumps, and brought Tsotsobe back at exactly the right time, after a first spell of five overs for six runs. The left-armer used his variations well and bowled Jamshed an offcutter that he fed back. The tall man got down low and plucked it in his follow through. Misbah knew he had to battle on his own. After 49 boundary-less deliveries, he cleared Morris over mid-on to release pressure but he was soon stranded. McLaren removed Umar Amin when he tried to go big and was caught at cover and Kamran Akmal, who was caught at point, in the same over and Pakistan’s chase seemed over.Misbah responded with a six over long-on and then his fight was also extinguished. He picked out midwicket from a Tsotsobe slower ball and left it to the tail to have some fun at the end. Instead, it was McLaren who helped himself to four wickets for five runs to ensure South Africa rounded up a convincing win. They would not have been confident of that at the halfway stage. With 51 runs scored and six wickets falling in the last 10 overs of their innings, it seemed they had squandered the chance to build on a well-laid platform.Even though Pakistan’s three spinners cost them only 107 runs in 26 overs, Amla’s 69-run stand with Faf du Plessis and the 41 put on by de Villiers and Duminy helped negate the collapse later on. South Africa will remain concerned about the four run-outs but showed significant improvement and will eye the last four.Pakistan now look at the semi-finals from a greater distance and, although they are not out of the competition, they need West Indies to beat India on Tuesday. If Pakistan then beat India and West Indies triumph over South Africa in the final group games, three teams would have won one match and net run-rate will come into the equation.

LSG in the way of RCB's top-two finish

RCB are expected to be without Tim David, but Josh Hazlewood is back

Vishal Dikshit26-May-20251:24

Chance for Pant to open?

Big Picture: Will LSG spoil RCB’s party?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) need not have watched the game between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Monday with a calculator in hand to see what kind of margin they need for Tuesday to finish in the top two for a straight shot into the IPL 2025 final. No matter what the result on Monday night, RCB just need to win their last league game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to reach 19 points that will guarantee them a place in qualifier 1, whether they finish on top or second. If LSG win on Tuesday, though, RCB will finish third and play in the eliminator, like they did last year and bowed out of the tournament after a loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR).Related

  • Hazlewood returns to bolster RCB ahead of playoffs

  • Moody, Kumble want RCB to shake off loss and not second-guess themselves

  • RCB need their share of luck now to find lost momentum

  • Injury scare for Tim David ahead of playoffs

What might scare RCB a little is that the teams eliminated from the playoffs race have been beating the teams that have made it to the playoffs over the last four days. It was LSG who started that trend by taking down the table-toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) with a match-winning century from Mitchell Marsh. Nicholas Pooran’s return to runs after a slump in between also bodes well for LSG, and so does the bowling of 6’4” fast bowler Will O’Rourke, who has bagged four wickets in his two showings so far, after he came on as a replacement for the injured Mayank Yadav. The day after LSG’s last game, RCB had their four-match winning streak broken by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Even though one loss doesn’t make or break a team’s confidence, RCB suffered a blow in that clash when their middle-order basher Tim David hurt himself while fielding in the deep, and is unlikely for Tuesday.RCB will, however, be boosted by the return of their ace fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, who stayed back in Australia for his shoulder rehab when the IPL had resumed, and has joined the team ahead of the last league game.

Form guide

Royal Challengers Bengaluru LWWWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Lucknow Super Giants: WLLLL

In the spotlight: Josh Hazlewood and Rishabh Pant

There are not many overseas bowlers who have taken IPL 2025 by storm, but Josh Hazlewood is among the small bunch. His metronomic bowling style married with the T20 weapons of hard lengths, pace variations and yorkers make him one of the most feared fast bowlers in the competition. He is a potent weapon in both the powerplay and the death overs, and RCB will look to bank heavily on him, on both Tuesday and in the playoffs, before he heads to London for the WTC final.0:58

Moody: RCB need to move on from this loss quickly

Rishabh Pant is having his worst IPL season, be it in terms of runs, strike rate or average. In his last game, however, Pant gave glimpses of Pant of the old when he hit two sixes with his usual physics-defying positions he gets into by the time he finishes his shots. It could be because LSG had been eliminated from the playoffs, and we saw a carefree Pant with a nothing-to-lose attitude. LSG will hope he bats more like that on Tuesday, and he will hope he gets some more runs before flying out to London for the Test series as vice-captain.

Team news and likely XIIs

RCB will be forced to make a couple of changes. Hazlewood’s return to the XI will be in place of Lungi Ngidi, who misses the last league game to fly back home for WTC final preparations with his national side. The big miss will be David, who had scored 42 runs off 20 deliveries he faced in their last two games. RCB may not have a like-for-like replacement for him if he’s unavailable, but they do have Liam Livingstone and Tim Seifert who was brought in as replacement for Jacob Bethell for the remainder of the tournament, just like they have Blessing Muzarabani for Ngidi. Both Seifert and Muzarabani have joined the squad. Their captain Rajat Patidar was only fit to bat in the last game, and he could continue to be their Impact Player if he has still not recovered to field.Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 1 Phil Salt, 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Mayank Agarwal, 4 Rajat Patidar, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 Romario Shepherd, 8 Krunal Pandya, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Yash Dayal, 12 Suyash SharmaThe main change LSG could make is bringing back Digvesh Rathi, who missed the last game because of his one-match suspension. If their opener Aiden Markram has returned home to prepare for the WTC final, LSG will need a new opener. Will Pant move up the order again? They may also want to give chances to more players on the bench such as batter Matthew Breetzke, wicketkeeper-batter Aryan Juyal, batting allrounder Yuvraj Chaudhary, bowling allrounder Rajvardhan Hangargekar and batting allrounder Arshin Kulkarni who still haven’t played a game this season, and Himmat Singh hasn’t batted even once despite getting two matches this season.Lucknow Super Giants: 1 Matthew Breetzke/Aiden Markram, 2 Mitchell Marsh, 3 Nicholas Pooran, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt & wk), 5 Ayush Badoni, 6 Abdul Samad, 7 Himmat Singh, 8 Digvesh Rathi, 9 Avesh Khan, 10 Akash Deep, 11 Will O’Rourke, 12 Akash Singh

The big question

Pitch and conditions

It’s going to be a mixed-soil pitch for Lucknow’s last game of the season, made up of red and black soil. That’s usually a batting-friendly track. The last game played on that strip was between LSG and CSK when the hosts were restricted to 166 and MS Dhoni had taken CSK home. It’s expected to be extremely hot in Lucknow on Tuesday, with temperatures going over 36 degrees Celsius, and a good amount of humidity too to make it more sultry. There is no rain in the forecast.

Stats and trivia

  • RCB will have to find a way to stop LSG’s overseas batters from hitting sixes: Marsh has struck the second-most sixes in the powerplay so far whereas Pooran has the most in the middle overs
  • Will RCB be brave enough to bowl Krunal Pandya to Pooran? Because Pooran also holds the record of most sixes against spin in this IPL, at 25, with 15 being the second-best. Pooran has hardly faced Krunal so far, having scored 25 off his 15 balls so far in the IPL without being dismissed yet
  • RCB could become the first time in the history of the IPL to win all their seven away games, if they bag another W on Tuesday
  • Virat Kohli is 24 away from 9000 runs for RCB overall, in the IPL and Champions League T20 combined

SLC in better control of financial situation – Lorgat

Sri Lanka Cricket special advisor and former ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat has said he is encouraged by the measures SLC have taken in the wake of a financial crisis

Sri Lanka Cricket special advisor and former ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat has said he is encouraged by the measures SLC have taken in the wake of a financial crisis, and believes the board has since “got a handle” on their financial situation. Lorgat is presently in the country conducting a wide-ranging review of the state of the game in Sri Lanka, and is expected to produce a report of his findings and recommendations later in the year.Lorgat said he had not yet pinned down areas of priority for his review, but suggested the SLC’s financial management would be given special attention. “I think it’s fair to say that the financial situation is something that needs to be looked at and is already being tackled by SLC,” he said. “I know for a fact because I was with the ICC at the time, that there were serious challenges with finances. But it’s good and it’s positive for me to say that at least there is a handle on it now and there’s progress being made. But there’s still a long way to go.”The SLC has been mired in debt approaching $70 million since the 2011 World Cup after constructing two new international cricket stadiums and ordering extensive renovations on a third. After struggling to make player payments over the last 18 months, the SLC has cut its number of contracted players from 100 to 60 as well as made layoffs elsewhere in order to trim spending.”Sri Lanka Cricket has taken up and understood what the issues are,” Lorgat said. “It’s working out its cashflows and its projections, its expenses, its revenue cycles and so on. It’s probably got a better management system for its finances now, from what I’ve seen.”The board ended eight months of delay in player payments after the state owned Bank of Ceylon released $5 million to the SLC in February. It has also had to lean on a $2.5 million disbursement from the ICC, to prepare for hosting the World Twenty20, which begins on September 18. Of that sum, $500,000 is string-free grant, $1 million an advance on ticket sales, and $1 million a loan which must be repaid in 2015.Lorgat commended the SLC for commissioning an examination of its finances, governance and structure, and said he would continue in the role until he can complete a thorough review.”In terms of length I will stay and do as much as is required to complete a piece of work. I wouldn’t want to be constrained by time. I have agreed to work until the end of October, but I will do whatever is necessary to complete the piece of work. “Research for Lorgat’s review began a week ago, and he said he is speaking to a variety of stakeholders in Sri Lanka in order to better understand the state of cricket in the country. “The section of people that I’m speaking to have come from the media, the national team, board members, ex-captains, staff, to get an idea of what happens within the office. There are people in club setups that I will speak to… everybody who will help me form a picture of Sri Lanka cricket.””I’ve been encouraged by the conversations I’ve already had. It’s quite positive, people have been forthcoming. That’s part of the value of being independent. People will share with you what they believe is good, what they believe is not good, what needs to be done and so on.”

Jaques' registration cleared for Yorkshire

Phil Jaques, the former Australia batsman, has had his registration as a non-overseas player for Yorkshire cleared by the ECB but was unable to resume his county career when rain washed out the opening day against Essex at Headingley.Jaques, who has scored 2477 first-class at 61.92 runs for Yorkshire in his previous spells with the county, had a meeting on Monday where the paperwork was completed and now cannot play cricket in Australia except at club level.”It is quite a while now since I played for Yorkshire and I am really excited to get back into it,” he said. “There are a lot of good players at the club and I hope that I can help to get Yorkshire back into the Division One of the Championship where they belong.”Jaques was looking forward to working with former Australia team-mate Jason Gillespie, Yorkshire’s new coach, to turn the team’s fortunes around. “He was a senior player when I first got into Australia’s side and we will be in similar roles now,” he said. While Jaques’ situation was good news for Yorkshire, events across the Atlantic in the Caribbean have created difficulties in completing the signing of Mitchell Starc, Australia’s left-arm fast bowler, who is lined up to bolster their bowling resources. It had been hoped that Starc would be able to make his debut on May 9 against Gloucestershire but injuries to James Pattinson and Peter Siddle during the current Test series against West Indies mean that he could now be recalled for the third Test in Dominica next week. That, in turn, could impact when Cricket Australia are willing to release him for a county stint, although he has had little cricket recently.Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket, hopes to have a clearer picture when the Test series is complete.

Ingram, Kallis and rain sink India

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsNo jet lag for Jacques Kallis•Associated Press

In the end, it was probably a fitting end to a solitary Twenty20 international sandwiched between South Africa’s tour of New Zealand, the Asia Cup and the Indian Premier League. In the end, it was rain that proved decisive in what was shaping up to be a close chase and what could have been the highest successful one in T20Is. In the end, MS Dhoni was once again left to rue the profligacy of his medium-pacers and assorted part-time bowlers.Gautam Gambhir had launched India’s pursuit of 220 in a blaze of boundaries but even a total of 71 for 0 after 7.5 overs proved to be comfortably behind the Duckworth-Lewis par score of 82, such had been South Africa’s dominance earlier with the bat.Half-centuries from Colin Ingram and Jacques Kallis had lifted the hosts to their second-highest T20I total, and the fourth-highest ever. With all his three medium-pacers going for runs, Dhoni was forced to overuse his part-time spinners, who collectively went for 87 in seven overs.Kallis showed no sign of any jet lag after having flown halfway across the world from New Zealand just in time for this game. Ingram, with a T20I strike-rate of 117.85 before this match, stroked his way to his maiden half-century in the format, his 78 taking 50 deliveries. There was no respite for India right from the start as their three medium-pacers – with similar pace and reliance on swing – were easily taken for boundaries. Richard Levi provided India a sampler of what was in store for them, dismissively swatting Praveen Kumar and Irfan Pathan for a couple of fours each. Irfan provided temporary relief to his captain when he got Levi to edge one going across to slip but Ingram signalled there would be no let-up with an exquisite punch past point for four off his first ball.Vinay Kumar began promisingly with an over that went for just two but Ingram and Kallis ensured South Africa were always in charge. India seemed to have stopped the torrent of runs to some extent as R Ashwin and Suresh Raina got through a couple of tight overs but Kallis and Ingram responded in style. Ashwin and Rohit Sharma were dispatched over midwicket for huge sixes.Dhoni turned to the slow-mediums of Virat Kohli. Kallis lofted him past long-on for four and crashed the next two deliveries past the sweeper cover. After having slog-swept Ashwin over deep midwicket, Kallis found the fielder on the second attempt to depart for 61 off 42 but by then the second-wicket stand had realised 119 off 80.More punishment lay in store for India as Vinay disappeared for 20 in the 17th over, 14 of those coming in three deliveries against Ingram who slashed, flicked and cut for boundaries.Though Ingram holed out to deep midwicket off the first ball of the 18th, Farhaan Behardien and Justin Ontong took 14 off the 19th over bowled by Irfan. With Praveen and Vinay available to bowl the last over, Dhoni went for Raina.Ontong earned ten off the first two deliveries with a loft over extra cover and a slog over midwicket. Though Ontong was bowled off the third, Albie Morkel hammered two sixes and a four off the last three as Raina went for 26 in the over, and 49 in four. The last ball of the innings typified how shell-shocked India were, as Ashwin lost a straightforward catch in the lights to concede a six at long-on. That stroke boosted South Africa to 219, a score which would require India to better the highest-successful chase in T20Is they achieved against Sri Lanka in 2009.Gambhir seemed to be in the mood to pull it off on his own, laying into Albie Morkel’s first over which went for 16. Before the heavens opened up, it rained slashes, cuts, hooks, top edges and outside edges from Gambhir’s bat. India might have gone at a quicker rate but Robin Uthappa struggled to get going at the other end, scoring at below a run-a-ball.The only other man, apart from Kallis, from the South Africa Test squad to New Zealand to be playing this game, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, squeezed in three overs that went for only 15, ensuring that Duckworth-Lewis went against India.
