Wolves need to sign Franck Kessie to bring Ruben Neves back to his best

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Wolves face a trip to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon as they look to continue their unbeaten run of form in the Premier League.

Nuno Santo’s side can make it a fifth straight game without defeat at St James’ Park, although, it is really about time they started picking up more victories – no team in the top-flight has drawn more games (five) than the west Midlanders this season.

Wolves somewhat lack a cutting edge in attack, but it must be said that last time out against Southampton, they could have seen more goals fly in as Raul Jimenez had two attempts chalked off by VAR before he finally stuck the ball in the net from the penalty spot.

Only two players have scored two or more in the league, per WhoScored.

Goals need to be shared out amongst the team, and this is where their midfield has lacked this season, particularly with Ruben Neves, who appears to be playing a much deeper role for his fellow countryman.

On the Chalkboard

As highlighted earlier this week by Football FanCast, Neves is averaging an xG per 90 minutes of just 0.03 this campaign, per Understat.

This just isn’t good enough for a player that has previously bagged 11 goals in the last two seasons, helping the club to the Championship title and a Europa League place.

But it isn’t entirely his fault as Nuno is asking him to play deeper, maybe because they lack an out-and-out defensive midfield type of player.

Are Gareth Southgate’s Aston Villa roots the reason behind the Wolves player in the video below being overlooked?…

Birmingham Live claim the Portuguese boss wants to add a central midfielder in January, while La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Calciomercato, state that Wolves have already put in an offer for AC Milan’s Franck Kessie.

He would be the ideal man to bring in and help Neves as his presence would allow the 22-year-old to play further forward, where he can once again be a valuable attacking threat.

You only have to look at his strike against Manchester United to see what he could offer.

Last season in Serie A, Kessie displayed aspects of his game that would suit the role that Wolves are longing for – he averaged 1.2 tackles and 1.5 clearances per game while still being a threat in the final third having netted on seven occasions too, per WhoScored.

The 22-year-old, who is valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, would be the perfect accompaniment to a midfield trio that includes Neves and Joao Moutinho, and he would certainly help them get back on track in the heart of the pitch.

A titan in the middle of the pitch, he would certainly add a different dimension to Wolves – one which finally allows their dynamic Portuguese to thrive in the Premier League.

Tottenham fans reject Adrien Rabiot, Christian Eriksen swap deal

According to le10sport, Juventus could offer Tottenham Hotspur the chance to sign Adrien Rabiot as part of a move for Christian Eriksen.

Rabiot only joined the Italian champions over the summer after running down his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Frenchman has struggled to make his mark in Turin, though, featuring in just three Serie A matches at the start of the 2019-20 campaign.

Eriksen, meanwhile, has reportedly decided that he wants to leave Spurs in January with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

According to le10sport, Juventus could look to tempt Spurs into allowing Eriksen to leave at the mid-point of the campaign by using Rabiot as a makeweight.

As expected, a number of Tottenham fans have been on social media offering their views on the speculation, and it would be fair to say that the majority are simply not interested in a swoop for the central midfielder.

Indeed, Rabiot was previously reported by ESPN to believe that Spurs were “below” him prior to his exit from PSG.

Exclusive: John Hartson delivers verdict on Harry Kane’s sluggish start to the season

[ad_pod ]

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Arsenal striker John Hartson has delivered his verdict on why Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane might not have been at his best at the beginning of the 2019/20 season.

While the England captain scored twice on the opening day against Aston Villa and once against the Gunners, he drew blanks in the home matches against Newcastle United and then Crystal Palace on Saturday, and also missed a penalty while playing for his country against Kosovo.

Sky Sports did a feature only last week saying Spurs were pressing less than any other Premier League team – unusual for a Mauricio Pochettino side – and that lack of intensity starts from the front.

When asked whether he thought Kane looks sluggish this term, Hartson exclusively told FFC:

“Let’s not forget his injury at the back end of last season. I’m not sure whether he’s fully, fully, fully confident in himself in terms of his ankle.

“That could be affecting him a little bit, but he’s still a world-class player. World-class players bounce back and they prove people like me and you wrong.”

The Welshman makes a good point.

Perhaps Kane has simply realised that because of the multiple ankle issues he has suffered in the past, which have seen him miss 33 matches in the last three years according to his injury history on Transfermarkt, his role in this Tottenham team now has changed.

Maybe he simply can’t afford to chase into the channels and harry defenders as he might have done in the past, so as not to risk a recurrence of that injury.

In that respect the onus will be on the likes of Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela to step up instead, leaving the England skipper to do what he is world-class at – sticking the ball in the back of the net.

Crystal Palace fans drool over Martin Kelly and Gary Cahill’s partnership after 2-0 win

[ad_pod ]Some Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to drool over Martin Kelly and Gary Cahill’s partnership at centre-back, following the 2-0 win over Norwich. The win means that the Eagles are unbeaten in four games at Selhurst Park so far this season, and the two England international’s colossal performances at the back were key in keeping that run going against the Canaries.Kelly, like Cahill, completed one tackle, while also making three clearances and one block.Cahill – who was signed on a free transfer back in the summer – complemented his partner well with two interceptions and two clearances, while also making one block.

With Mamadou Sakho’s fitness lacking consistency so far this term and James Tomkins still yet to make his comeback from injury, Kelly and Cahill are stepping up during a time where arguably the south Londoners’ two best centre-backs are missing.

Let’s take a look at some of the tweets from the clearly impressed Palace fans…

Rangers fans couldn’t stop thinking about Ryan Kent during Old Firm derby defeat

Rangers suffered a heartbreaking Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic on Sunday, a game in which many of their supporters thought they were missing one man in particular.

Despite being behind, the Gers struggled to create many opportunities late on as Gerrard’s men fell to a 2-0 defeat.

The name on everyone’s lips during and after the game was Ryan Kent, as Rangers supporters took to Twitter wishing they had him back.

One fan said they wanted the top dogs at the club to pay Liverpool “whatever” to sign him as another commented that they missed the 22-year-old so badly on Sunday.

A further individual said he’d have made a huge difference to the game as the winger’s inventiveness and class was lacking from the match.

Kent spent last season on loan at Ibrox, where he scored six and assisted nine in all competitions, per Transfermarkt.

The Liverpool man scored in the Old Firm back in March so there’s certainly a case to say he could have had an impact on proceedings.

Here’s the best of the discussion.

Man United keeper David De Gea gives Joel Pereira motivational boost amid loan exit

[ad_pod ]Joel Pereira’s loan journey continues.Manchester United have loaned goalkeeper Pereira to Scottish Premiership side Hearts for the remainder of the 2019/20 campaign. The 23-year-old, who featured during United’s pre-season tour in wins against Perth Glory and Leeds United, has already spent time with KV Kortrijk, Vitoria Setubal, Belenenses SAD and Rochdale in the past, and will likely be hoping that Scotland is the last stop on his nomad experience as he looks to establish himself a more permanent spot in the United line-up.Following the news that Pereira would be moving further north, current United no.1 David de Gea took to social media to wish his counterpart luck…

As it stands, United currently have Sergio Romero and Lee Grant as their two back-up options, while youngster Dean Henderson, who recently signed a contract keeping him at Old Trafford for another year, is gathering top flight experience with Premier League newbies Sheffield United. All to play for, then.

Crystal Palace fans are fuming after transfer deadline day update

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Crystal Palace fans on Twitter are fuming after Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge confirmed that the club wouldn’t be making a signing on deadline day having spoken to manager Roy Hodgson.

While the Eagles did sign Gary Cahill, James McCarthy and Victor Camarasa in the final week of the window, they failed to get the right-back and striker they desperately looked to need – especially following the departures of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Alexander Sorloth earlier in the window.

Now, Hodgson will have to go into the 2019/20 Premier League season with what he has got, with Joel Ward and Martin Kelly likely to be battling for the full-back role, and a reliance on Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham up top.

That is hardly an ideal scenario with sporting director Dougie Freedman and Steve Parish not managing to get any further deals over the line, and the Selhurst Park faithful are far from happy with the duo and the situation they now find themselves in.

While one individual simply said “Parish and Freedman out now”, another said “Championship next year lads”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
