Everton: Fans react to Townsend footage

Everton fans have been reacting to footage posted by the club’s official Twitter account showing Andros Townsend scoring a sublime goal in training.

In the video, Townsend receives the ball on the right side of the pitch, cuts inside onto his preferred left foot and bends the ball into the top left corner.

The Englishman joined Everton on a free transfer after leaving Crystal Palace at the end of his contract.

He made his unofficial debut in their recent Florida Cup clash with Colombian top-flight outfit Millonarios, and was denied a first goal in blue by the crossbar.

The 30-year-old has, of course, shown a penchant for the spectacular before. He landed the Goal of the Season award in 2019 after an extraordinary long-range volley in Crystal Palace’s 3-2 win at Manchester City.

Everton fans will hope Townsend proves a more consistent goalscoring threat this term after he netted only one goal in 35 appearances in his final season with the Eagles.

Derby County interested in Tom Carroll

Derby County are interested in a deal to bring Tom Carroll to Pride Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Derby Telegraph, who claim that the former Queens Park Rangers midfielder has started training with Wayne Rooney’s side, and could feature in the club’s pre-season friendly against Salford City on Saturday.

The news comes after the EFL granted Derby permission to sign up to five out of contract players in the summer transfer window, although the Championship side still remain under a transfer embargo.

Finally, the report states that the Rams currently have Phil Jagielka, Ravel Morrison, Curtis Davies, Andre Wisdom, Sone Aluko, Sam Baldock, Richard Stearman and Ryan Allsop training with the first team, all of whom are playing for a contract ahead of next season.

Carroll could finally replace Johnson

While a knee injury saw Carroll sidelined for the second half of last season, the 29-year-old nevertheless demonstrated in his time at QPR that he would prove an extremely useful addition to Wayne Rooney’s Derby side ahead of next season.

Indeed, over his 22 Championship appearances for the Rs last term, the £1.62m-rated man provided one assist and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 0.5 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

The central midfielder also impressed in more typical metrics for his position, making an average of 0.6 interceptions, 1.3 tackles, 0.7 clearances and winning 2.7 duels per match.

These returns saw the man Jamie Carragher dubbed an “outstanding” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.74, with his performances leading to Mark Warburton trying to tie the 29-year-old down to a new deal at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium, although he would ultimately reject the club’s advances.

Furthermore, it could be argued that, following Bradley Johnson’s departure from Pride Park in the summer of 2019, the Rams have failed to adequately replace the midfielder, something that the potential capture of Carroll could prove to resolve.

As such, as long as the former Tottenham Hotspur man can prove his fitness in training with the Rams, it would seem highly advisable for Rooney to do all he can to secure a deal for the midfielder this summer, with his signing very much appearing to be a welcome step in the right direction for the crisis-hit club.

Liverpool fans react to right-back report

Liverpool won’t use funds from the potential sale of Neco Williams to sign another right-back, according to journalist Paul Gorst.

It was reported in June that the likes of Southampton, Leeds United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers were interested in Williams.

The Reds are apparently open to selling the 20-year-old if their £10million valuation is met.

Williams himself is keen to secure ‘regular first-team football’, having been limited to just three Premier League starts last season as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s understudy.

How would Liverpool use the Neco Williams money?

According to Gorst, though, that £10million wouldn’t be reinvested in a direct replacement.

That’s because Liverpool are confident Joe Gomez and 17-year-old academy prospect Conor Bradley provide sufficient depth.

In theory, the money could instead be put towards a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who departed Anfield at the end of his contract.

It could also be used to sign another forward with a mid-season Africa Cup of Nations calling for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Fan feed LFC Transfer Room relayed Gorst’s claim, and here’s what supporters made of it.

Sheff Wed eye up Jayden Onen move

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly interested in signing former Arsenal youngster Jayden Onen during the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Sheff Wed eye up signings

Darren Moore will be hoping to have a productive few months in the transfer market, as he looks to make his mark at Hillsborough and build a squad capable of bouncing back immediately after relegation.

The Owls will need a mixture of flair players and those with experience in League One, so if they are to secure promotion back to the Championship, a number of new signings will likely be required.

The Latest: Onen linked with move

According to the Sheffield Star, Wednesday are keen on signing Onen, who was released by Reading earlier this month and is currently without a club.

The 20-year-old midfielder only managed one Championship appearance last season, but was actually once on Arsenal’s books, prior to joining Crystal Palace in 2017.

Doncaster Rovers and Wycombe Wanderers are also believed to be interested in signing Onen, as are a number of unnamed Championship clubs.

The Verdict: Another interesting addition?

Moore seems to be hellbent on bringing youth into his squad – something that is much-needed, considering the main nucleus of Owls players have grown past their primes together in the past four or five years, such as Sam Hutchinson and Barry Bannan.

While Onen remains unproven as a first-team player, he scored eight goals in 20 appearances for Reading’s Under-23s, highlighting his ability in the final third.

He could offer more guile than the current midfield options and potentially dovetail with new signing Dennis Adeniran in the middle of the park.

In other news, one player reportedly won’t make a return to Sheff Wed this summer. Find out who it is here.

Liverpool linked to Domenico Berardi

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Sassuolo winger Domenico Berardi after another impressive season in Serie A.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (as reported by the Liverpool Echo), the Reds are monitoring the 26-year-old’s situation, with a possible bid being prepared.

The report claims that fellow Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in snapping up Berardi this summer, meaning Jurgen Klopp may have to move quickly in order to secure his man.

New Mohamed Salah

After bagging an impressive 17 goals and providing a further eight assists in just 30 top-flight appearances last season, Berardi earned a place in Italy’s squad for Euro 2020.

The 6 ft forward has carried his fine club form onto the international stage, becoming one of Roberto Mancini’s standout performers in the group stage of the European Championship, with two assists in two games for the unbeaten Italian side leading The Guardian’s Nicky Bandini to say that he, and his club teammate Manuel Locatelli, have been at the heart of the revitalisation of Italy.

He’s been a highly-rated talent in his homeland for many years despite not featuring for one of Italian football’s biggest teams, drawing praise from former AC Milan and Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi back in 2014.

“Berardi is a player of great talent, a modern footballer who plays for the team all over the field,” said Sacchi. “He has liveliness, intuition, temperament, and strength combined with a good technique.”

A failed two-year stint at Juventus saw Berardi fail to make a single appearance for the Old Lady, spending the entirety of his time back on loan at Sassuolo, but he’s continually been linked with another exit since.

At 26, the pacey gem may think it’s the right time to take the next step in his career, and Liverpool’s director of football Michael Edwards could discover the club’s new Mohamed Salah with a swoop over the coming months.

The Eygpt international has fired the Reds to Champions League and Premier League glory since making his switch from Serie A outfit Roma four seasons ago, and Berardi could have a similar impact.

He’s contributed to 172 goals in 291 games for his boyhood club to date, highlighting the star quality he possesses. And he could become the next attacking talent from Italian football to steer Klopp’s charges to major trophies next season.

And, in other news…Edwards must seal Liverpool swoop for 18 y/o “incredible talent”, Klopp would love him

Pundit baffled by Conor Coady doubts amid Everton links

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer has knocked back suggestions that Everton target Conor Coady cannot play in a back four.

Coady has mainly played in a back three during his time at Wolves, with there being a narrative that the 28-year-old would struggle in a four-man defence.

He is currently being linked with a move to Everton and Football Insider claim a bid for him could be launched this summer.

The Toffees often lined up with a back four last season, so some may question this move, but Palmer finds the idea that a central defender can only play in one specific system baffling, an idea he refuses to accept.

“I don’t understand that,” the ex-Leeds United player said. “If you’re a defender, you’re a defender. You’re a central defender; you should be able to play in a three or a back four. I don’t get it.

“If you’re a midfield player, you’re a midfield player. If you’re a striker, you play as a striker. I don’t get it. Are you a defender or not?”

According to the same Football Insider report, it was Nuno Espirito Santo who initially suggested Coady when he was the leading candidate for the Everton job. However, Rafael Benitez has also given the green light to sign the England international in talks with the club.

Liverpool make offer for Otavio

Liverpool have made the first move in their attempts to bring Otavio to Anfield this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Portuguese publication A Bola (via Sport Witness), who claim that Jurgen Klopp’s side have made an offer of €23m (£20m) plus Marko Grujic for the FC Porto attacking midfielder.

However, the report goes on to state that Porto have no intention of agreeing a deal for Otavio that includes the Liverpool midfielder, and instead have informed the Reds that they will have to pay Otavio’s €40m (£34m) release clause if they wish to sign the 26-year-old this summer.

Coutinho 2.0

Considering just how impressive Otavio was for Porto last season, it is unsurprising to learn of Liverpool’s interest in the former Brazil U23 international.

Indeed, over his 26 Liga NOS appearances for Sergio Conceicao’s side last term, the £21.6m-rated man scored three goals, registered eight assists and created eight big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.4 shots and making 1.7 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £29k-per-week midfielder earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.30, ranking him as Porto’s third-best performer in the top flight of Portuguese football.

There are clear comparisons that can be drawn between the 26-year-old and Liverpool former star attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho, with Otavio’s strengths being noted as his ball control, his playmaking and his consistency, traits that have also been attributed to the Barcelona player.

Indeed, the two players are also capable of operating from a number of positions across the front line and midfield, with Otavio having been fielded from left, central, right and attacking midfield, as well as at left-wing and as a support striker last season.

As such, if Liverpool do go on to get a deal over the line for the Porto star this summer, Klopp would be gaining a type of player he has not really possessed since the sale of Coutinho back in 2018, with Otavio very much appearing to be a talent that the German manager would love.

Aston Villa: Villains enter talks for Pape Matar Sarr

French journalist Joris Crolbois has claimed that Aston Villa are the first club to enter negotiations with highly sought-after FC Metz midfielder Pape Metar Sarr.

The Lowdown: Villa’s summer spending spree

As the Villains continue to embark on their summer spending spree, they now seem to have turned their attention towards the Senegal international as they look to strengthen ahead of 2021/22 [One Football].

The Villa Park outfit have already agreed a deal for Emi Buendia and are linked with James Ward-Prowse as well.

Enjoying a fantastic start to life in Ligue 1, Sarr played 22 times in the top flight this term, notching three goals from midfield [Transfermarkt].

The Latest: Villa the only club to have ‘started talks’ with Sarr

Replying to Villa supporters on Twitter, sports journalist Crolbois (RMC Sport) remarked: “Milan has been following him since February but Villa is the only club to have started talks.”

This indicates that the Midlands side could be in pole position for his signature which will offer major excitement to the Villa Park faithful.

Crolbois continued to say that although ‘Villa is the first club’ to enter talks, ‘other clubs will certainly come’, but also offered some words of encouragement to Villa fans: “He is a player with enormous potential comparable to Camavinga of Rennes. He showed this season, especially against PSG, that he has the level of the biggest clubs in Ligue 1. Let’s see what happens in the Premier League.”

The verdict: Tackling machine

The 18-year-old may add some further bite to the Villa midfield on arrival. Comparatively to the current midfield options, the wonderkid has a higher tackling rate per 90 minutes that John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Marvelous Nakamba and Morgan Sanson [WhoScored].

All in all, the midfielder would be an outstanding coup for Aston Villa if they were to successfully thrash out a deal. With Crolbois’ original report quoting a price tag as high as €30m (£25.8m), he wouldn’t come cheap, but Sarr is a beast in the middle of the park already, and at just 18, will surely only become better and even more valuable.

With the right coaching Sarr could be a Premier League star, potentially netting the Villains some serious sell-on value further down the line too, should his development continue at its current rate.
