Bellingham, in just 16 games, has scored 15 goals and provided four assists, making him the fastest player to reach this milestone in the white shirt. His exploits in front of goal led the Italian manager to compare the English youngster to that of Kaka during his stint with AC Milan in the early 2000s.

When Ancelotti was asked if he found Bellingham similar to Alfredo di Stefano, Zinedine Zidane and Johan Cruyff, the coach replied: "I have never seen Di Stefano play. In the previous press conference I made the comparison with Zidane… and… well, I am surprised by him, I would say the closest thing is like the first time I saw Kaka. I’m not saying that he is similar to him, but he has similarities to Kaka."

Getty ANCELOTTI HAILED BELLINGHAM'S WORK RATE

While most coaches would have been ecstatic with the goalscoring trait of Bellingham, Ancelotti revealed that he is more of an admirer of the midfielder's work rate.

When asked if the former Borussia Dortmund player is their main goalscorer, Ancelotti said: "No, I don’t think we have ever asked Bellingham to score goals. He is doing it because he has this fantastic ability to reach the opponent’s area at the right time. The respect we have for him is for the work he does… not for the goals. He is greatly respected for what he does on the field, which goes far beyond goals. He is a humble and hardworking boy. Entering the Madrid dressing room is easy.”

Alarm bells started ringing at Valdebebas when Bellingham was spotted walking out of the training earlier than usual on Friday. It is known that the midfielder is carrying a shoulder injury that will require surgery at some point in the future but Ancelotti dismissed speculations about a potential injury and confirmed that he is available for selection.

"Bellingham is ready to play tomorrow. He has no problem, he is a little tired. He has a slight discomfort in his ankle and we have preferred to avoid contact. He will play tomorrow," he said.

Real Madrid will host Granada in a La Liga fixture on Saturday afternoon at Santiago Bernabeu.

Bangladesh face toughest test at end of long season

Bangladesh’s recent successes have ensured that South Africa, coming off a three-month break, will aim to shake off rust quickly and not take the hosts lightly

Mohammad Isam04-Jul-2015

The South Africans travel well, and Bangladesh expect them to be harder than Pakistan and India•AFP

Two teams with little in common are meeting at crossroads, one side coming to an end of a successful period, the other beginning a long journey. Contests between South Africa and Bangladesh in any format – save their World Cup meeting in 2007 – have not been much of a contest, but the home team’s improvement will ensure the visitors are anything but complacent.Bangladesh have had few breaks while playing four series and a World Cupin the last 12 months, and these two Twenty20 internationals, three ODIs and two Tests against South Africa will end their 2014-15 and 2015 seasons, which merged into one vast period. They have two months off before hosting Australia in October.South Africa, on the other hand, are touring Bangladesh for their first international assignment since losing the World Cup semi-final to New Zealand in March. Having had three months off, they begin with Bangladesh, before playing New Zealand at home, India away and England at home, before returning to India for the World T20 in March 2016. Between now and February, South Africa play 12 Tests, 16 ODIs and nine T20 internationals. No wonder then that Dale Steyn thought his energy would be better spent elsewhere than in Bangladesh, but since the team arrived in Dhaka last week, his team-mates Faf du Plessis and JP Duminy have given their opponents’ current form due credit. Having had success in the subcontinent previously, South Africa are not the type to go easy on any opponent, and Bangladesh’s victories over Pakistan and India would have hardened that approach.Apart from a host brimming with confidence, South Africa will also have to contend with the heat and humidity of the Bangladesh summer, and Duminy said how well they take care of themselves physically could be critical to success. The T20Is start at 1300 local time.South Africa are missing Steyn, Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel and Imran Tahir for the T20Is, and will test an emerging attack comprising Kyle Abbott, David Wiese, Kagiso Rabada, Eddie Leie and Beuran Hendricks, along side Wayne Parnell. Steyn will play only the Tests, while AB de Villiers will play the T20s and ODIs before going on paternity leave. They will be expected to dominate Bangladesh nonetheless, and unless there is an upset, the results are likely to receive a low-key response back in South Africa. In Dhaka and Chittagong, though, interest in cricket – call it madness or frenzy too – is at an all-time high. It has peaked after the 2-1 victory in the ODIs against India, as evidenced by the rush for free seats during South Africa’s warm-up match against a BCB XI in Fatullah. Bangladesh’s fans will do anything to get a glimpse. The captain Mashrafe Mortaza and coach Chandika Hathurusingha have said that South Africa are likely to be tougher than Pakistan and India, not only because of their formidable away record, but also because Bangladesh are coming to the end of a long season. The two Twenty20 internationals are the start of both sides build-ups to the 2016 World T20, and the ODIs that follow are of special importance to Bangladesh. They are all but through to the 2017 Champions Trophy, but one victory against South Africa will cast their qualification in stone. The T20 and ODI series will also be the first under the ICC’s new playing conditions for limited-overs games – no mandatory catchers in the first ten overs of an ODI, no batting Powerplay, five fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle in the last ten overs of an ODI, and free-hits for all kinds of no-balls. Bangladesh have expressed happiness with many of these changes, and it remains to be seen how the teams adjust to them.

> VEJA A TABELA DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

No segundo tempo, a coisa mudou.

Hendricks, Rossouw take Knights to final

Lions were kept down to 148 for 5 after choosing to bat, and Reeza Hendricks and Rilee Rossouw ensured the target was hunted down inside 18 overs.Hendricks and Rossouw’s second-wicket partnership was worth 115 in just 13 overs. Rossouw cracked 58 off 42 deliveries before falling at the doorstep of victory with five runs needed.Hendricks ended the match next ball after Rossouw’s exit with a six over the deep cover boundary off Lonwabo Tsotsobe. Hendricks also blitzed eight fours in his unbeaten 74 off 53.Kagiso Rabada conceded only 13 runs off three overs but the rest of the Lions attack could not contain Hendricks and Rossouw. In contrast, Andre Russell was the only Knights bowler to take some punishment as he went for 44 in his four overs.Lions were 64 for 2 in 8.1 overs but could not push on from there and lacked a strong finish. The highest score for Lions was Temba Bavuma’s 36 off 25 before he fell to Werner Coetsee.Malusi Siboto, who took 2 for 26, limited Chris Gayle to 15 off 14. Gayle began with a four and a six off Coetsee but hit a short ball from Siboto straight to short midwicket. The final will be played on Friday in Cape Town.

Stephen Cook keen on Lions turnaround

Stephen Cook has been appointed first-class and 50-overs captain. Neil McKenzie will lead the 20-over side while Temba Bavuma will serve as vice-captain across formats

A new-look Lions leadership pack, headed by Stephen Cook, will take the franchise into the 2014/15 season. Cook has been appointed first-class and 50-overs captain while Neil McKenzie will lead their 20-over side. Batsman Temba Bavuma will act as deputy in all three formats. Alviro Petersen, who stepped down as captain last season, remains part of Lions’ squad but has not been tasked with any leadership duties.”I am greatly honoured to have been given this job. I grew up on the banks of the Wanderers watching my dad play and leadership is something I’ve always wanted to be involved in,” Cook told ESPNcricinfo. “I know its going to be a tough challenge but I am really looking forward to it.”After finishing second in the first-class competition and winning the twenty-over trophy in the 2012/13 season, Lions were rudely brought back down to earth last summer. They finished bottom of the points table in all three competitions in a season that was plagued by injuries and unhappiness. While seamer Chris Morris battled an ankle injury, Petersen stood down on the morning of a match after what he called interference by the selectors, forcing Thami Tsolekile to take over at the 11th hour. That marked the lowest point in the Lions’ dismal season and Cook is keen to move on. “Our players did not become bad overnight. I think what happened is because we had done so well the season before, we didn’t adapt to the fact that other teams had improved and we were caught on the hop,” he said. “But we have resisted the urge to make too many changes.”Lions have held on to their players from last summer and have made two additions to their group. Devon Conway, who was named the provincial one-day cricketer of the year at CSA’s awards last week, has been added to the contracted list along with under-19 World Cup winner Kagiso Rabada, who made his first-class debut at the end of last season. They have three nationally-contracted players on their books: Petersen, Quinton de Kock and Lonwabo Tsotsobe and an experienced core which includes Cook, McKenzie and Tsolekile. McKenzie will turn 39 in the coming season but has committed himself to playing in all formats for Lions.Cook has made it clear everyone, including the new faces, will have more demanded of them this season. “We are all really motivated to do well and guys know they will get will get pressed a little harder and asked to work a little smarter,” he said. For Cook, the goal is simple. He wants the franchise to be able to add to the trophy cupboard and if he has it his way, it will be in the longest format. “Every competition is important but for me, it would be most special to win the first-class [competition] because that is the one that really tests you as a squad,” he said. “You have to play good cricket for 40 days, whereas with the limited-overs [game] you could end up third and have a good day and then make the final. The first-class is also the competition I have never won with Lions. The last time they won it here was the season before I made my professional debut.”That was 15 years ago in the 1999/2000 season, before the franchise system had formed. Back then, all Cook wanted to do was play for what was then Gauteng and eventually for South Africa. A decade and a half later, it is still all he wants. “I have never given up on playing for South Africa. That’s my driving force.”Cook is a regular among the top ten run-scorers in the first-class competition but has struggled for higher honours largely because of where he bats – in the top two. The presence of Graeme Smith in the Test team made it difficult for Cook to get a look-in but with Smith retired, a vacancy in the national team and a platform from which to audition for it, Cook still believes anything is possible, for both him and his Lions.

Muralitharan, Sehwag to captain MCC

Muttiah Muralitharan, the world’s leading international wicket-taker, and former India opener Virender Sehwag, as well as Monty Panesar and prospective England opener Sam Robson are among the players named in the MCC squad for next month’s Champion County match in Abu Dhabi. An MCC XI captained by Sehwag will play Durham, the 2013 Championship winners, in a four-day first-class match beginning on March 23 to herald the start of the English season. A T20 tournament featuring Lancashire, Sussex and Durham precedes the main fixture, in which Muralitharan will lead the side.Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene and England allrounder Samit Patel are also included in the squad, along with Patel’s Nottinghamshire team-mates Harry Gurney, the left-arm seamer recently called up by England, and former New Zealand international Andre Adams. As has been the case for the last few years, the Champion County match will be a day-night affair, using pink cricket balls; pink balls will also be used in the T20 fixtures.”I was delighted to be asked to play in this match, and being able to captain the MCC side makes it even more of a privilege,” Sehwag said. “We’re taking a very strong squad out to Abu Dhabi so I’m sure the standard of cricket on show will be very high.”It’s also very exciting to be playing under lights with the pink ball. It’s a big innovation for the game and I’m very keen to be involved in any initiative which aims to increase the appeal of cricket to a wider audience.”John Stephenson, the MCC’s head of cricket, said he hoped the continued pioneering of the pink ball in day-night first-class cricket would soon lead to it being taken up at higher levels within the game.”MCC has had very positive results from these day-night Champion County matches, and has provided the game with invaluable insight into the possibilities of playing floodlit Test cricket,” he said. “The evidence continues to mount and the club believes this will soon translate into day-night Test cricket, which will help to re-invigorate the five day international game in countries where attendances are low.”The trip will also feature Lancashire playing 50-over matches against an MCC Universities Combined XI and MCC Young Cricketers on March 22 and 23 respectively.MCC squad: Virender Sehwag (capt), Muttiah Muralitharan (captain T20 fixtures), Sam Robson, Luis Reece, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Samit Patel, Prassana Jayawardene, Ollie Rayner, Andre Adams, Harry Gurney, Kyle Hogg, Monty Panesar

Otago win despite Flynn 79

Otago did not have any standout performers but benefited from a collection of useful innings to secure a three-wicket victory at Seddon Park

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Nov-2013
ScorecardDaniel Flynn was the solitary performer with the bat for Northern Districts, whereas Otago did not have any standout performers but benefited from a collection of useful innings to secure a three-wicket victory at Seddon Park.Northern Districts had made a brisk start after winning the toss, with their openers adding 43 in five overs before Brad Wilson was dismissed. Flynn hit three sixes in his 79 off 53 balls, but only two of Northern Districts’ next nine batsmen made it into double figures, and they did not pass 20 either. After Scott Styris retired hurt, Northern Districts collapsed from 109 for 3 to 151 for 8 in 20 overs. Neil Wagner picked up 4 for 33 for Otago.Otago’s chase was hindered by the fall of regular wickets but they had useful stands at the top of the order, with all of the top five batsmen getting starts. Ryan ten Doeschate’s 29 was the top score though. They were well placed at 122 for 3 when there was a serious wobble and four wickets fell for the addition of only 12 runs. From 134 for 5, Iain Robertson blitzed 21 off 11 balls to lead Otago home with seven balls to spare.
