Coventry: BoyleSports announced as new shirt sponsor; lucrative deal could help Mark Robins’ transfer plans [Opinion]

Coventry City manager Mark Robins has been handed a financial boost as his preparations for next season continue to take shape.

The Sky Blues boss produced the goods last season as he guided his side to the League One title and promotion to the Championship. In preparing for next season, significant signings have been made to bolster his squad in an attempt to cement themselves as a second tier club.

Gustavo Hamer and Julien Dacosta were two of the first players to arrive at the club, whilst Marcel Hilssner has also been joined by former Aston Villa youngster Callum O’Hare and Ryan Giles.

With the new season fast approaching, Robins has now been handed a cash boost with BoyleSports becoming the club’s main sponsor, which will see their logo in the front of the playing kit and adult replica kits.

The new deal is the club’s highest value front of shirt sponsorship deal in more than a decade and, while the exact figure was undisclosed, it was reported as a ‘significant deal’, as per Coventry Live.

“We’re very pleased to welcome BoyleSports to Coventry City as our new shirt sponsor and principal club partner,” said Coventry chief executive Dave Boddy.

“This is a significant deal for the football club and will provide much needed and significant revenue for the club, helping to support Mark Robins and the team in preparation for the upcoming Championship season.

“BoyleSports have already shown great enthusiasm about their new sponsorship and supporting the Sky Blues, and we look forward to working with them.”

Robins’ excellent transfer business this summer could now be followed by a couple of more signings, with the club’s finances set to be boosted by the BoyleSports sponsorship deal.

With the aforementioned players joining the Sky Blues, Robins has added quality in several positions throughout the pitch, although his centre-forward options are still a little thin on the ground with only Amadou Bakayoko, Maxime Biamou, Jordan Ponticelli and Matt Godden in the squad.

Coventry fans, do you think the new sponsorship deal could help to found some further signings? Let us know your views in the comments section below…

Macron Stadium

Key information about Macron Stadium

Macron Stadium, or the University of Bolton Stadium as it is now known, was built in 1997 and houses League One’s Bolton Wanderers. The ground is located in Horwich in Greater Manchester, around five miles outside of Bolton town centre.

Its current capacity is 28,723 and it has a pitch that measures 105m by 68m. The surface of the pitch is also covered with Desso GrassMaster’s hybrid turf and it has undersoil heating installed with no running track surrounding it.

The record attendance of 28,353 spectators at the Macron Stadium was set on 28 December 2003 when Bolton faced Leicester City in the Premier League.

A history of Macron Stadium

Macron Stadium has been the home of Bolton Wanderers ever since it was built and then opened back in August 1997. Prior to that, they were playing their football at Burnden Park but the ground was already quite dilapidated and simply outdated by that point and the club had to move away from it.

Following the Taylor Report that stated all stadiums in the top two tiers of English football had to be all-seaters, and with Bolton aiming for a promotion from the Third Division, a decision to vacate Burnden Park was made by 1995. Two years later, everything was already set and they could start life anew at Macron Stadium, or rather at Reebok Stadium as it was called back then due to sponsorship reasons.

The first game ever to be played at the ground was a Premiership clash against Everton on 1 September 1997 (0-0). Unfortunately, the game would later be known for all the wrong reasons, despair and controversy due to some refereeing decisions that went the visitors’ way, ultimately becoming a deciding factor in Bolton’s eventual relegation on goal difference come the end of the season.

When it first opened, Macron Stadium had a capacity of 28,723 and that figure holds true to this day. However, the name Reebok Stadium didn’t stick as the fans thought it was too impersonal and that the club only focused on the money. Still, even though it grew on them, the name changed to Macron Stadium in 2014 when Bolton signed a new deal with the Italian company Macron.

At the end of that four-year deal with the Italian sportswear brand, the stadium name was changed once again, this time to be called the University of Bolton Stadium from 2018 onwards as a result of their new partnership with the said University. Interestingly enough, since it was built with the Taylor Report already in mind, the Macron Stadium is an all-seater and is one of the first modern stadiums in the country.

Apart from football, Macron Stadium also hosted concerts, rugby matches, boxing matches, darts competitions and much, much more. It would also host European and international clashes on some occasions.

Tickets to watch Bolton Wanderers at Macron Stadium

All tickets to watch Bolton Wanderers play at Macron Stadium can be found on the club’s official website. The price will vary depending on the age group and the category chosen but the average cost of an adult ticket is between £22 and £35.

The club also offers a season ticket scheme as well as memberships that can get you discounts on every purchase. More information can be found on the aforementioned website.

Manchester United: Jeremie Boga is a transfer target for the Red Devils

It is no secret that Manchester United are looking to add even more firepower to close the gap on Liverpool, the newly-crowned Premier League champions.

Although Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have impressed with 51 goals between them this season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted he is eager to add to the attacking options at his disposal.

Solskjaer has made it clear that Jadon Sancho remains his top priority this summer, but now another name has entered the mix.

Jeremie Boga came through the famous Chelsea academy, although he spent the majority of his time out on loan, as has become tradition at Stamford Bridge. However, he grew frustrated by a lack of opportunities and promptly jumped ship to Sassuolo when the chance arose.

Boga has enjoyed his best season with the Neroverdi so far, scoring 10 goals in 28 games in Serie A, taking 1.7 shots and attempting 4.1 dribbles per game (via WhoScored).

According to Foot Mercato, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United are keen to sign the Ivorian and have made a tentative approach.

His heroics have attracted attention from major European clubs like Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and Barcelona. The 23-year-old is currently valued at £14m via Transfermarkt but it is likely that he won’t come cheap.

It is also worth pointing out that the Blues have a buy-back clause on their academy graduate, although it remains to be seen if they will exercise the option.

If the Red Devils are serious about buying Boga, they could face stiff competition for his signature, which explains why the board have “shown little interest of going further” for now.

Moreover, United may choose to pool all of their attention into pursuing Sancho instead, as the one-time Ivory Coast international has insisted that he is committed to Sassuolo.

United fans, do you think Ed Woodward should sign Jeremie Boga in the summer? Let us know down below!

Josh Maja: West Ham may have found their new Jermain Defoe

West Ham boss David Moyes may have just found West Ham their next Jermain Defoe as he plots a move for one of his former players.

What’s the word?

According to Sky Sports, the Irons have an interest in Josh Maja who has impressed since joining Bordeaux in January 2019 from Moyes’ old club, Sunderland.

It’s claimed that the Ligue 1 outfit could look to sell the 21-year-old striker as their finances have been implicated by the global pandemic.

Scottish giants Rangers are also keen on Maja as a potential replacement for Alfredo Morelos.

The Sun have previously mooted a £10m fee for his signature, but it remains to be seen exactly how much he could command this summer.

Defoe 2.0

Moyes was the man to give Maja his debut at the Black Cats back in 2016 before he went on to bag 17 goals in 49 senior appearances for the club.

Interestingly, former Hammers legend Defoe became a bit of a mentor for the young Nigerian during their time together in the northeast, helping improve his finishing and how to become a better player overall.

There will undoubtedly be similarities between the two as a result.

“Jermain Defoe was probably one of my biggest admirers because I think he just liked the fact that I was good at finishing.”

Maja on Defoe.

This campaign, Maja bagged eight goals in 24 appearances, though he only played a total of 894 minutes via Transfermarkt, which makes it all that more impressive.

The young striker’s head coach at the Girondins, Paolo Sousa, claims that he’s a goalscorer with both “sharp and strong qualities” whilst Chris Coleman, the successor to Moyes’ successor at the Stadium of Light, believed Maja offered his side a “different threat”.

It would make perfect sense for the Hammers to pull the trigger on Maja, particularly with Sebastian Haller’s struggles this campaign, and if they get half the player Defoe was, then Moyes is onto a huge winner.

Leeds fans react to Phil Hay’s Elland Road claim

Leeds United fans have been left in a frenzy after The Athletic’s Phil Hay delivered a bold statement to Twitter on Friday afternoon.

The ever-reliable Whites reporter lauded Spurs and their new stadium following an article from one of his colleagues, Charlie Eccleshare, and accompanied the praise with a pondering Leeds moving into one of their own.

Elland Road has been the club’s home since forming 100 years ago in 1919 and is the 14th largest stadium in English football, and the third largest outside the top-flight behind the Stadium of Light and Hillsborough.

But given the recent links speculating a possible takeover of the west Yorkshire outfit by PSG powerhouses QSI, and their lofty ambitions to once again be a ‘great’ in the Premier League, are they restricting themselves with their 37,000-odd capacity?

Liverpool fans react to reports that Man City will escape a Champions League ban

Liverpool fans reacted with all kinds of emotions to reports that Manchester City will not face a ban from the Champions League following a Financial Fair Play investigation.

The reports come from The Athletic who have stated that City will escape the ban and only receive a fine. It was reported that many within the sport expected the club to be hit with a European ban after the reports from Der Spiegel.

The German news outlet released various chapters detailing the corruption at the Premier League champions. Der Spiegel touched on how City have been covering up millions which should have been calculated by Financial Fair Play.

Some of the Liverpool faithful are not shocked by the news, whilst others have vented their anger, as some even mocked the club.

One fan said that “UEFA bottled it”, whilst another supporter said it is an “absolute joke”.

The Reds are of course the holders of the Champions League right now, and one fan even mocked the club saying “I love seeing them get knocked out in the quarters”.

This is just another story that has caused tension between the two giants after the controversy last weekend was followed up by the Joe Gomez and Raheem Sterling incident.

Here’s what the fans have had to say this time around…

Spurs fans torn on potential Ziyech signing

Tottenham Hotspur fans are torn on the possibility of signing Ajax playmaker Hakim Ziyech after a new report from 90 Min.

The Morocco international has been in electric form for the Dutch giants this season, making 21 appearances in all competitions and scoring six goals, while registering 15 assists.

Ziyech was brilliant for Ajax last season, too, even scoring against Spurs in their Champions League semi-final as he hit 21 goals and laid on 24 assists in all competitions.

Spurs are said to be making plans for when Christian Eriksen departs the club; the report states that the Denmark international will leave before the beginning of the 2020/21 season. As it is, his contract is set to expire in the summer.

And the club are exploring the possibility of bringing Ziyech in as a like-for-like replacement.

But Spurs fans appear torn on the report, with some believing that defenders are needed instead of further attacking midfielders, while others think that he would be a genuinely superb acquisition.

Wolves need to sign Franck Kessie to bring Ruben Neves back to his best

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Wolves face a trip to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon as they look to continue their unbeaten run of form in the Premier League.

Nuno Santo’s side can make it a fifth straight game without defeat at St James’ Park, although, it is really about time they started picking up more victories – no team in the top-flight has drawn more games (five) than the west Midlanders this season.

Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Wolves somewhat lack a cutting edge in attack, but it must be said that last time out against Southampton, they could have seen more goals fly in as Raul Jimenez had two attempts chalked off by VAR before he finally stuck the ball in the net from the penalty spot.

Only two players have scored two or more in the league, per WhoScored.

Goals need to be shared out amongst the team, and this is where their midfield has lacked this season, particularly with Ruben Neves, who appears to be playing a much deeper role for his fellow countryman.

On the Chalkboard

As highlighted earlier this week by Football FanCast, Neves is averaging an xG per 90 minutes of just 0.03 this campaign, per Understat.

This just isn’t good enough for a player that has previously bagged 11 goals in the last two seasons, helping the club to the Championship title and a Europa League place.

But it isn’t entirely his fault as Nuno is asking him to play deeper, maybe because they lack an out-and-out defensive midfield type of player.

Are Gareth Southgate’s Aston Villa roots the reason behind the Wolves player in the video below being overlooked?…

Birmingham Live claim the Portuguese boss wants to add a central midfielder in January, while La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Calciomercato, state that Wolves have already put in an offer for AC Milan’s Franck Kessie.

He would be the ideal man to bring in and help Neves as his presence would allow the 22-year-old to play further forward, where he can once again be a valuable attacking threat.

You only have to look at his strike against Manchester United to see what he could offer.

Last season in Serie A, Kessie displayed aspects of his game that would suit the role that Wolves are longing for – he averaged 1.2 tackles and 1.5 clearances per game while still being a threat in the final third having netted on seven occasions too, per WhoScored.

The 22-year-old, who is valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, would be the perfect accompaniment to a midfield trio that includes Neves and Joao Moutinho, and he would certainly help them get back on track in the heart of the pitch.

A titan in the middle of the pitch, he would certainly add a different dimension to Wolves – one which finally allows their dynamic Portuguese to thrive in the Premier League.
