Argentina player ratings vs Peru: Lionel Messi is back with a bang! Inter Miami star's brilliant brace lifts La Albiceleste to 2-0 World Cup qualifying win

The captain produced another memorable night for Lionel Scaloni's side to stay undefeated in 2026 World Cup qualifying.

Was anything else to be expected? Could Lionel Messi really go missing for a month? The Argentine may not have been in fine form – or entirely fit – in recent weeks, but he isn't exactly slowing down, either. He showed such on Tuesday night, scoring twice as Argentina cruised to a 2-0 win over Peru in World Cup qualifying.

The signs were there early on. The Argentine went on a signature mazy run in the opening minutes, and Messi curled a free-kick that stung the palms of Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

Then the goals came. The first was a wonderful effort, a controlled volley from the top of the box that flew into the top corner off a Nico Gonzalez cutback. The second looked much the same, struck from the same spot but hit lower and to the keeper's right.

He almost had a third after the break, but saw a tap-in correctly ruled out after a VAR review. Peru pushed for a way back into the game, and enjoyed some attacking spells, but a resolute Argentina defence comfortably held onto the lead to complete an ideal night for Lionel Scaloni's side.

GOAL rates Argentina's players from Estadio Nacional de Lima…

  • Goalkeeper & Defence

    Emiliano Martinez (6/10):

Almost lobbed after 30 minutes. Made a couple of good saves. He will take the clean sheet.

    Gonzalo Montiel (5/10):

Some suspect defending almost left Argentina exposed early. Subbed off after 34 minutes with an injury.

    Cristian Romero (7/10):

As hard in a tackle as expected, and involved in the build up to the second goal. Replaced in the second half with apparent discomfort.

    Nicolas Otamendi (6/10):

Rarely threatened, and solid when he had to recover.

    Nico Tagliofico (7/10):

Did his defensive stuff well, and offered valuable width down the left.

  • Midfield

    Rodrigo De Paul (6/10):

Full of grit, hard in a tackle. Not quite as expansive on the ball.

    Alexis Mac Allister (7/10):

A solid all-round midfield performance. Won the ball back, kept things ticking along.

    Enzo Fernandez (8/10):

Assisted Messi's second with a fine cut-back. Ran the game from midfield. A fine showing.

  • Attack

    Lionel Messi (9/10):

Put a free-kick on target early on. Didn't touch the ball much for long periods of the first half. Scored one great goal, one very good one, and had another ruled out.

    Julian Alvarez (7/10):

A wonderful dummy set up Messi's second. His movement was mostly excellent.

    Nico Gonzalez (7/10):

Lively and expansive down the left and assisted Messi's first goal. May have done enough to be a regular in this side.

  • Subs & Manager

    Lucas Quarta (6/10):

A solid showing after coming on in the first half.

    German Pezzella (6/10):

Didn't have much to do when introduced for the injured Romero.

    Marcos Acuna (6/10):

Valuable legs at left-back when Tagliafico tired.

    Giovani Lo Celso (N/A):

No time to make an impact

    Lautauro Martinez (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Lionel Scaloni (8/10):

Went for a similar side to the one that started the final in Qatar last winter, and everything was very easy. Argentina were relatively solid, and his star man chipped in. He will take the three points in hostile territory.

Desta forma, a equipe titular no treino deste sábado foi: Muriel, Gilberto, Nino, Digão e Egídio; Henrique, Yuri, Nenê; Wellington Silva, Fernando Pacheco e Evanílson.

O elenco do Fluminense folga neste domingo.

A maioria, no entanto, o apoiava.

– Sempre deixei a vida me levar e continuo assim. Tenho feito crossfit, tenho competido.

É ídolo no São Paulo?

Stevens four-for restricts Essex

A miserly stint of 4 for 37 by Kent allrounder Darren Stevens ensured that the hosts enjoyed an opening day in the sun against Essex in Tunbridge Wells

ScorecardDarren Stevens helped dismiss Essex for 260 after they chose to bat•Getty ImagesA miserly stint of 4 for 37 by Kent allrounder Darren Stevens ensured that the hosts enjoyed an opening day in the sun against Essex in Tunbridge Wells. Stevens, who last week edged past the 300-wicket milestone in first-class cricket, sent down 12 maidens in his 23.5 overs spell to help dismiss the visitors soon after tea for 260 with wicketkeeper Sam Billings taking five catches behind the timbers. In the 12 overs through to the close, Kent reached 68 without loss with Rob Key on 19 not out and Daniel Bell-Drummond unbeaten with 46 off only 34 balls as the hosts go into day two trailing by 192.Despite heavy overnight rain play started on time with Essex batting first after winning the toss. Kent made two changes, welcoming back Rob Key and Mitch Claydon for Adam Ball and Matt Coles, while Essex named Ravi Patel, the on-loan Middlesex spinner.Despite seemingly ideal batting conditions, Kent winkled out two batsmen in the opening hour as Jaik Mickleburgh feathered one to the keeper and Nick Browne, after an attractive 30, played inside the line of a Calum Haggett offcutter to go leg before.Third-wicket partners Tom Westley and Ravi Bopara mounted a recovery operation either side of lunch but, after adding 110, top-scorer Westley aimed a back foot force against Hunn and sent back a sharp return catch to the bowler for 77.Bopara became Stevens’ first victim when he drove airily to snick to a diving Sam Northeast in the cordon then, just before tea, Essex dangerman Jessie Ryder was superbly caught at extra cover by Joe Denly, diving full-length to his left off the bowling of Mitch Claydon.Essex skipper James Foster, who has a superb batting record against Kent, was first to go in the final session when he nibbled at a Stevens outswinger to give Kent counterpart Billings another victim.Having posted a 77-ball fifty with seven fours, Ryan ten Doeschate then aimed a back-foot force against Stevens to edge to Billings, who was soon celebrating again when David Masters top-edged a heave across the line against Haggett. The same bowler then snaffled a sharp return one-handed catch by his right pocket to account for Graham Napier leaving Stevens to finish the innings by having Jamie Porter pouched by a tumbling Billings.”It was good at the Pavilion End with my wind at my back, at my age you need all the help you can, but at the Railway End it was that little bit tougher,” Stevens said. “It’s on the slow side, the pitch, but if you stand the seam up, bowl in the right areas and play the patience game you’ve a good chance of getting wickets.”They were two down at lunch and with Ravi and Westley looking comfortable, but we kept it tight and backed ourselves to bowl as many dot balls as we could and then await the rewards.”

Well-managed Derbyshire have promotion potential

ESPNcricinfo assesses Derbyshire’s prospects for 2015

Last season
In: Shiv Thakor (Leicestershire), Wayne White (Lancashire).Out: Tim Groenewald (Somerset), Stephen Moore, Richard Johnson (both retired), Gareth Cross, Peter Burgoyne, Paul Borrington, Mark Turner, Matt Higginbottom (all released)Overseas: Martin Guptill (T20), Tillakaratne Dilshan (T20), Nathan Rimmington (T20)2014 in a nutshell
The car accident that injured wicketkeeper Tom Poynton and tragically killed his father, Keith, overshadowed the first weeks of the season. Poynton’s injuries meant he did not play a game – instead he worked in the club’s commercial department – and the squad underwent a number of changes during Graeme Welch’s first campaign in charge. Tim Groenewald and Stephen Moore were moved on – to Somerset and retirement respectively – as Welch focused on rebuilding in the wake of Championship relegation in 2013. They finished the season in good shape, winning five out of six to suggest the team was going in the right direction. There was also a quarter-final appearance in the Royal London Cup, though Derbyshire’s T20 form was dismal, with just one win.2015 prospects
A tight, well-drilled side, Derbyshire have developed a reputation for maximising their resources. Last year, they had the most penetrative bowler in the country – Mark Footitt’s’s 82 Championship wickets winning him a spot on the England Performance Programme – but took some time to find a settled side, using 24 different players. Wayne Madsen, the captain, will again be the key batsman – he recently qualified to represent England and has said he is looking to get on the selectors’ radar. Welch has opted to promote youth and Derbyshire will need greater contributions from their senior players if they are to sustain a promotion challenge but the signings of Martin Guptill and Tillakaratne Dilshan, as well as Shiv Thakor and Wayne White, should provide valuable extra quality. Power brokers
Taking over from Karl Krikken meant Welch immediately had high standards to live up to and, after some initial struggles, his approach seems to be working. A focus over the winter has been on improving fitness levels, while talk of working on “some new shots for the batsmen and some new deliveries for the bowlers” is intriguing, perhaps aimed at improving limited-overs fortunes. Madsen has become a lynchpin with the bat, allied with a calm and measured approach to the captaincy.Key player
Footitt’s pace and left-arm action have long generated admiring glances but, at the age of 29, he finally found the consistency to go with them. Able to swing the ball back in to right-handers as well as hit the seam, Footitt is at the quicker end of the spectrum, if not quite a match for Mitchell Johnson. Of his 198 first-class wickets, almost half came in 2014, at an average of 19.19; he was also a key part of Derbyshire’s run to the last eight of the Royal London Cup.Bright young thing
Wicketkeeper Harvey Hosein was playing for Derbyshire 2nd XI at the age of 13 and last season he made a record-breaking start to life in the senior side. A month after his 18th birthday, he collected seven catches in an innings against Surrey – no one has ever taken more on their first-class debut – then added four more in the second innings, the first time a Derbyshire keeper had collected 11 in a match. That feat meant he surpassed the great Bob Taylor but he will have to battle Poynton for a starting spot.ESPNcricinfo verdict
The template for Derbyshire will be their own promotion campaign of 2012, when a committed squad effort carried them to an unexpected title. If Guptill helps get them off to a good start, as he did three years ago, Wes Durston and David Wainwright rediscover some form, and young players such as Ben Slater, Alex Hughes and Ben Cotton continue their development, they should find themselves in contention. Hard to see how they can’t improve on their T20 showing, too. Ground improvements at Derby all help give the impression of a county in good hands and valued in the region.Bet365 odds: LV= Championship, Div 2: 13-2; NatWest Blast 28-1; Royal London Cup 20-1

Hazlewood or Cummins for Australia?

That Michael Clarke will return against New Zealand in Auckland – belatedly, after the wash-out against Bangladesh – is not news. Clarke would have played in place of George Bailey at the Gabba. But there is at least one other selection question that Australia need to answer before Saturday’s match: the extra pace of Pat Cummins or the control of Josh Hazlewood? It is an important decision, for the dimensions of the Eden Park ground allow little margin for error from the fast bowlers, which you’d think might go in Hazlewood’s favour. But then, Sydney’s ANZ Stadium is a similar size, and as a member of the Sydney Thunder squad, Cummins has had more exposure there than Hazlewood.Hazlewood played the World Cup opener against England in Melbourne and the persistent rain in Brisbane last Saturday meant that Australia did not reveal their hand regarding selection, as an XI was not named. But in Auckland on Thursday, bowling coach Craig McDermott hinted that perhaps Hazlwood would have missed out against Bangladesh.”I think they’ve done a magnificent job, they’ve trained the house down and they’ve both been disappointed when they’ve both missed out in either game,” McDermott said. “And so they should be, we’re in a World Cup.”Patty’s probably a bit quicker and he’s probably got a few more change ups from a variation point of view than Josh. But it’s horses for courses and the selectors will sort that out over the next 48 hours who will get a guernsey or not, or maybe they both play. I’m not going to comment, I’m not a selector.”Cummins picked up five wickets in Australia’s two warm-up games but was left out against England after leaking a few too many runs during the tri-series last month. However, Hazlewood struggled to find the right line in Australia’s heavy win over England, where he finished with 0 for 45 from 6.5 overs, and comfortably the worst economy rate of the five seamers.”He probably didn’t start the best he probably could have started,” McDermott said of Hazlewood. “Certainly that day he warmed up beautifully but he probably just fell off the ball and pushed the ball into middle and leg, which is not his go. He knows that and we’ve been working on that and he’s going really well.”Both Australia and New Zealand will enter this game with strong pace attacks, with Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson headlining the Australian group and New Zealand’s frontline attack made up of Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Adam Milne. Milne can breach 150kph, while Boult and Southee were this week rated by Richard Hadlee as the country’s best-ever new-ball pair.Southee is coming off a remarkable 7 for 33 in Wellington, where he destroyed England’s batting line-up and set up a huge win for New Zealand, who are undefeated so far in the tournament. However, McDermott said that while Southee had been impressive, he was helped by the mistakes made by England’s batsmen.”Yeah, I think he bowled really well,” McDermott said. “The Poms didn’t move their feet very well but that’s another story.”Facing our blokes at practice is difficult enough so I think our blokes are going to be pretty well prepared. We’ve got Mitchell and Josh who have been swinging the ball consistently and they’re 10kph faster. So our blokes are well prepared for that sort of stuff, and our blokes move their feet pretty well.”McDermott also could not resist a sly dig at New Zealand when asked how his fast bowling unit would handle the challenge of containing the in-form Brendon McCullum on the small Eden Park.”I can think of four players that play for us who are equally as good,” McDermott said, “so maybe they’ve got four times the headaches.”

England's ten men hand India innings defeat

A woeful batting display on the third afternoon, significantly worse than their opening-day effort, meant India subsided to 161 and handed England victory by an innings and 54 runs despite Stuart Broad being in hospital

The Report by Andrew McGlashan09-Aug-2014

Hurricane Bertha? From England’s point of view, she can do her worst now. India were blown away before the dreadful forecast for Sunday could play any part in the fourth Test. A woeful batting display on the third afternoon, significantly worse than their opening-day effort because conditions were not as taxing, meant India subsided to 161 and handed England victory by an innings and 54 runs despite Stuart Broad being in hospital with a suspected broken nose and an ill James Anderson.Given the way one corner of the Old Trafford outfield could not cope with the downpour yesterday, it was not beyond the realms of possibility that the final day could have been in doubt if the rain on Sunday had proved as bad as predicted. India made all the conjecture irrelevant with a performance that lacked stomach, fight and basic common sense: some shots, such as MS Dhoni’s swipe to midwicket, and the run-out of Bhuvneshwar Kumar suggested they were not even interested in trying to see if the weather could aid them. “We were not up to the mark,” Dhoni said at the presentation.India lost nine wickets after tea, including one period of 5 for 13 in 29 balls, and it was not the swing, seam and pace that caused most havoc. Instead, Moeen Ali twirled and spun his way to 4 for 39, taking his series tally to 19, just when it appeared that England’s firepower could have been crucially diminished.England were able to secure a three-day victory – their first over India since 1967 at Edgbaston – without the services of Broad in India’s second innings, after he had been forced to retire hurt after a blow to the face from a Varun Aaron bouncer which squeezed between his grille and helmet. Blood dripped onto the pitch as he was quickly attended by the physio, although it is debatable whether Broad or India’s batsmen will leave Old Trafford with the more significant scars. It took a little longer for India’s collapse to set in than the first innings – Chris Woakes claimed his first wicket of the series when he trapped M Vijay lbw before tea, before Gautam Gambhir and Cheteshwar Pujara reached 53 for 1 – but their demise to 66 for 6 was in many ways more extraordinary given England were a bowler down, the sun was out and the early new ball had been weathered.Anderson, battling what Alastair Cook termed the “lurgy”, removed Gambhir with a short delivery – far from the most vicious of the match – which was gloved through to the keeper, then to the first ball of the next over Pujara was given lbw against Moeen as he pressed forward. It was a large stride and Hawk Eye said the ball had turned enough to slip down the leg side. The fact Moeen was turning the ball considerably, and often, would soon come into play again.Ajinkya Rahane, however, was done in less by the turn but more by one of the loosest shots he has played in the series – driving a low return catch to Moeen who moved smartly to his right. England, who could not help but be aware of the forecast regardless of how little regard cricketers say they give it, could barely believe the gifts being handed out.For a moment, the carnage returned to pace; there was a familiar outcome to the Anderson v Virat Kohli battle. Kohli had indicated he wanted to hit his way out of trouble but could only provide another edge to Anderson – this time an inswinger rather than the outswinger – which found its way to second slip. The challenge of a rare five-Test series is finding out a few of the India top order. It will require a searching examination for the likes of Kohli to lift themselves for the final Test next week.Whether Ravindra Jadeja, who has been a focal point in the series for a variety of reasons, plays in the final game is another matter. His off-the-mark shot, advancing down the pitch at Anderson and swiping a short ball through midwicket, suggested he was there for a good time, not a long time – it also prompted a little sarcastic clap, even a smile, from the under-the-weather Anderson. Next over, Jadeja completed a miserable match with the bat, to follow two middling scores at the Ageas Bowl, when he lunged at Moeen and edged to slip.By now Anderson had left the field. Surely Dhoni would at least try to take the game deeper? After the Ageas Bowl, he had said the Indian batsmen had been too deferential to Moeen and should attack him more. He followed his own words with deeds, but his heave into the leg side could not beat a diving Gary Ballance at midwicket. It was now all-but inevitable that England would wrap the game up in the evening. There was momentary frustration when Jordan, who massaged his figures with the final two wickets, overstepped when Bhuvneshwar edged to second slip but another freebie was handed to England when Bhuvneshwar tried to come back for a second and could not beat Moeen’s arm – just the speed of the throw this time, rather than the spin.R Ashwin continued to look as proficient as any of India’s batsmen in this match, driving and cutting as Jordan strived for the final wickets, but an excellent piece of fielding at deep square-leg by the substitute Liam Livingstone, a young Lancashire player, meant Jordan had two balls at Aaron. One was enough for the No. 10, a short delivery gloved behind, and one more enough to end the match as a yorker defeated Pankaj Singh, who had at least managed to end a 69-over wait for his maiden Test wicket when he earlier removed Joe Root.Such was the rapid conclusion, it was easy to forget England began on 237 for 6 – a lead of 85 – with a need to be positive and keep the game moving. Root and Jos Buttler, after waiting for the new ball, performed that role perfectly to take their stand to 134 as both reached half-centuries. It was an occasion when a Yorkshireman, Root, was getting warm applause at Old Trafford and the crowd also had much to enjoy from one of their own – or at least an adopted son – as Buttler picked up his second fifty in two Test innings, but this one helped to define a Test victory. However, as much as the crowd cheered the young batting pair, there was equal appreciation when Pankaj found Root’s glove down the leg side and Marais Erasmus’ finger went up to finally give him a Test average. Buttler was soon his second scalp, driving a slower ball to mid-off, by which time thoughts were firmly turning to what would happen when England took the ball again. Those plans appeared to have suffered a significant setback when Broad, having pulled consecutive sixes off Aaron, was pinned in the face the next delivery and walked off the field bloodied and dazed. As it was, he had not returned from hospital in time to collect his Man-of-the-Match award.
