Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has to start taking responsibility

Mauricio Pochettino has to stop making excuses.

Tottenham Hotspur lost 1-0 to Newcastle United on Sunday in a display that effectively put their supporters through death by a thousand cuts.

Spurs had 79.8% possession in the game, per WhoScored, and had a total of 929 touches of the ball; they made 753 total passes compared to the Magpies’ 192. It was the Magpies who dominated the most important stat of all, though: they scored, Spurs didn’t.

Afterwards, Pochettino, who had decided against picking Christian Eriksen in attacking midfield and opted to start with Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks in central midfield, blamed the defeat on a lack of unity.

He said, per The Guardian: “The problem is during the week, not when the competition arrives. This type of situation happens in the Premier League. That is why you need to create a very good dynamic and strong team bonding and, at the moment, that situation in our group is still far, far away. The group is still unsettled and we need to find solutions.

“We didn’t play well and I’m very disappointed about our performance. We conceded a very cheap goal and then it was difficult. We created some chances but not enough. We should have played better, [with] more desire, more capacity, more aggression with the ball. To have 80% of possession is too much when you only have a few shot on target.”

That, quite frankly, is an abdication of his duty. Supporters deserve to hear answers from the manager of their club. Now, it must be said, he was not to blame for the injuries sustained by either Dele Alli or Tanguy Ndombele.

But he opted against picking Eriksen – he has said he wants a new challenge and one has to assume that this is some sort of show of strength from Pochettino – and he decided to play two midfielders who do not have a through ball in them.

He also picked Son Heung-min on the left flank, a player who thrives on the break, who needs space and time. Even the most casual observer of the Premier League would know he was not going to have his day against Newcastle.

The selection of Erik Lamela – probably motivated by form after his goal and assist against City – looked all the more naïve as soon as he decided to take three touches instead of one every time the ball came near his boot.

Lucas Moura also played and, well, for Lucas, read the Son paragraph again. The pair were never going to work together in tandem.

Jan Vertonghen was also relegated to the bench, with Davinson Sanchez making a horrendous mistake that led to the Magpies’ only goal.

Pochettino did not know that Harry Kane was going to snatch at his chances but he did not help himself.

He appeared to let a petty feud get in the way of selecting his best attacking midfielder. He chose two wingers who had little to no chance of influencing a game against a resolute, deep-lying backline. And he left his best centre-back out too.

And then, afterwards, he decided against explaining himself, merely offering a few words of vague meaning that hint at a deeper problem.

Perhaps that problem comes from the fact that Pochettino holds everyone else to account before himself. If Spurs are to progress this season, that has to change.

Sunderland fans react to Jack Ross’ comments on youth talents

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Sunderland fans have been giving their verdict on some comments from Jack Ross, who wants the club to focus on using their youth talent rather than always looking for new signings.

What a weekend for the Black Cats. The club announced the signing of former Coventry City defender Jordan Willis, much to the delight of fans.

That wasn’t even their most important signing of the weekend though, as Aiden McGeady committed his future to the club, signing a new deal that will keep him on Wearside until the summer of 2021.

And now, Ross has encouraged the young talent at the club to force their way into his plans during pre-season.

“I’ve been pleased with them and there were a number of the younger players playing on Thursday,” he said.

“It’s good for them to be a part of it and I think we saw last season if you take Josh (Maja) and Denver (Hume) as an example of it that there’s an opportunity to force your way into the reckoning.

“Like Ethan (Robson) and Elliot (Embleton), they are players we have produced ourselves and we should embrace that rather than being obsessed by recruiting from elsewhere.

“They need that opportunity which hopefully I will be able to give them, but they also need to prove they are capable of taking it and then producing time after time which comes with the demands of playing for this club.”

Plenty of the Black Cats faithful have been delivering their verdict on the gaffer’s philosophy of pushing through young talent, and most of them are delighted to hear the club’s prospects will be given a fair chance.

However, others are wondering if the club is simply too “skint” to make any major signings, while one doesn’t believe the boss after his failure to use youth last season.

Crystal Palace fans mock Manchester United’s £50m Wan-Bissaka bid

[ad_pod ]

Given the stellar campaigns enjoyed by star men Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the main concern for many Crystal Palace fans this summer is not who they will or won’t sign, but who will and won’t stay – both local lads can be forgiven should they seek an exit, with a number of top clubs surely interested in their services.

Right-back Wan-Bissaka is being linked with a big money move to Manchester United, who offered the Eagles £50m for the 21-year-old this week, which breaks down into a £35m initial fee and up to £15m in add-ons – it is understood that the Selhurst Park outfit would accept £50m up front.

Despite the athletic number 29 having just one full season in the Premier League under his belt, he has established himself as one of the top right-backs in the game, statistically. There’s little doubt that he can be a world class talent in a matter of years and so plenty of Palace fans are laughing at the Red Devils’ attempt to get him on the cheap.

Should Crystal Palace keep hold of Max Meyer this summer? Harvey Jones discusses in the video below…

You can check out the best of the reaction on Twitter below, with some fans suggesting that the Eagles chiefs ask for £60m, while another called the Old Trafford outfit “embarrassing”…

The two defining matches in Crystal Palace’s season

Once again it was another slow and steady campaign from Roy Hodgson and his men, a 12th-place finish isn’t far off what anyone expected from the Eagles, and it’s a position that they probably deserve given their overall performance.

As each season goes on, Palace make themselves that little bit harder to play against, and once again they have delivered this term. Their only real worry has been the lack of consistency when Wilfried Zaha hasn’t been available. Luckily for them, though, the transfer window is now open, go out and buy another Zaha!

So, what were the defining moments that led to yet another steady Premier League campaign? Let’s have a look.

Huddersfield Town 0-1 Crystal Palace (Saturday 15th September 2018)

Despite being so early in the season, this was a game that quite easily could have deepened a then low on confidence Palace side. A loss and they would have suffered four straight defeats and been lurking in the depths of the relegation zone. A start like that and everyone knows how hard it is to bounce back… Ask Huddersfield fans.

But instead it was a win for the Eagles and they managed to soar their way up the table into a safer spot and that is where they were to remain for the most part of the season. Proving to be yet another inconsistent performer, it was as though 12th place had Palace’s name on it from day one.

Watford 2-1 Crystal Palace — FA Cup (Saturday 16th March 2019)

Indeed, reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Cup is no easy task, but once you’re there, it means being one win away from a trip to Wembley, dreamland for a club like Palace.

After beating Tottenham in one of the previous rounds, most of Palace’s fans would have thought a trip to Watford would be a walk in the park. It was quite the opposite.

With eventual finalists Watford ending all hopes of any silverware coming to Selhurst Park, it pretty much ended Palace’s season. It really took the wind out of their sails and left Palace looking a little bored throughout the rest of the season.

Arsenal: How Carl Jenkinson kept his place in the squad, and where his future lies

As an outsider looking in, being a backup player for any team looks like a lonely job.

Minutes are hard to come by, weeks and months could be spent just sitting on the substitute bench, and it seems no matter how hard they try the only way to start games is either in cup competitions or an injury to other players.

For Carl Jenkinson, though, being a backup has been the story for most of his career, but being second fiddle to Hector Bellerin is something the fans aren’t fazed about one bit.

Dubbed “the professional Arsenal fan” by the supporters, Jenkinson has won a special place in the hearts of fans for being the player that gives it 100% no matter how long he hasn’t played for and for being a well-documented follower of the club.

Since joining the club from Charlton as a 19-year-old in the summer of 2011, Jenkinson has only managed 69 appearances for the club in the eight years the right-back has spent at Arsenal, and although many thought his time would be over when Unai Emery came to the club the 27-year-old defender has been of some use for the Spaniard this season.

Jenkinson has started three Europa League games this season, all of them in the group stage, and in February the England-born defender started his first Premier League game in nearly two years for the Gunners, and his first start in the league at the Emirates Stadium since 2013.

Although Ainsley Maitland-Niles has established himself as the replacement for Hector Bellerin as the Spaniard recovers from an ACL injury, Jenkinson is surely likely to remain at the club next season as a backup yet again.

But not just backup in the right-back, but as reinforcement in every position of the defence. Emery has done some tinkering to Jenkinson’s game this season, transforming him from a right-sided defender and nothing more to a player who can play across the back four.

Jenkinson has played and impressed in every area of defence this season, and with the fullback entering the prime years of his career it won’t be a surprise to see more of the English defender next season as Arsenal’s surprise backup defender.

Arsenal fans, what is your favourite Jenkinson memory?

Osei-Tutu could be the answer to Arsenal’s defensive woes

[ad_pod ]

Jordi Osei-Tutu could be the next Arsenal youngster to roll off the club’s enviably long production line.

The 20-year-old, a right-back who can also play on the right wing, has slowly risen up the ranks of the club’s youth set-up and appears primed to make his first-team debut.

At right-back, after all, the Gunners currently have Hector Bellerin out injured, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles is being repurposed into a full-back despite appearing horrendously uncomfortable in the position.

Osei-Tutu has already had a taste of first-team action, though he did not actually get on the pitch. Unai Emery named the youngster as a substitute in the 3-0 win over Vorskla in the Europa League in November. He also gave him a start in his first ever game in charge, a pre-season friendly against Boreham Wood.

Arsene Wenger, too, has seen something in the defender. He named him in his matchday squad for games against Red Star Belgrade and Manchester United last season.

It is evidence that he has impressed those within the Emirates Stadium with his work-rate and determination.

Osei-Tutu has played for both the Under-18s and the Under-23s at Arsenal – making 29 appearances for the former and 23 for the latter. For each team, he has scored two goals, and he won the Premier League 2 title in 2018.

Indeed, he moved to the club from Reading in 2015, costing a reported £100,000, per Football.London.

He was included in the squad to travel to Singapore for a pre-season tour and has played against older opponents this season, lining up for the Under-23s in an EFL Trophy clash with Portsmouth.

Osei-Tutu has his head screwed on, too, and says he is focusing on improving his game as he bids to make his first-team debut.

After signing a new contract with the club, a three-year extension to the initial deal he signed, he told the club’s official website: “My new contract is massive for me but ultimately the aim is to get into the first team. That’s what I’m working towards and I hope to be involved more often.

“I’ve travelled with the first team and made the bench against Red Star Belgrade in Serbia and for the Carabao Cup match versus Norwich last season. I learnt a lot from the times I’ve trained with the players too.

“I’m working especially hard on improving my one-on-one defending. Being up against the likes of Alexis Sanchez last season and Alex Iwobi has helped me immensely.

“Obviously, I spend a lot of time working with players in the under-23s. There’s a lot of attacking talent who are a good test for anyone and we all help each other improve.”

As Arsenal’s season continues, and Emery continues to search for a solution in defence, he may well turn to Osei-Tutu. He is primed and ready, after all.
