USACA hit with multi-million dollar lawsuit

The USA Cricket Association has been hit with a multi-million dollar lawsuit filed by the North American Cricket League

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Dec-2010Although Gladstone Dainty has announced an ambitious plan for a national Twenty20 tournament in the USA starting in 2012, the USA Cricket Association has been hit with a multi-million dollar lawsuit filed by the North American Cricket League (NACL).NACL, which describes itself as a “sports media and entertainment company dedicated to promoting cricket throughout the world, including so-called Twenty20 format cricket in the United States” claims that it has an existing deal with USACA which is in direct conflict with the board’s new initiative.A statement from NACL said that there were “nine causes of action” including breach of contract, fraud, misappropriation of proprietary business information and theft of trade secrets. It accuses USACA of embarking on a “fraudulent scheme to extract money from NACL and its investors”.NACL’s case centres on an agreement it says it entered into with USACA to promote and organise an official Twenty20 league in the United States. “The parties signed an interim agreement that granted NACL an exclusive period of negotiations during which USACA was contractually bound to cease negotiations with any third parties for the same rights.”While NACL continued to negotiate a master agreement in good faith, USACA had no intention of honouring the terms of the interim agreement and engaged in a fraudulent scheme to extract money from NACL and its investors.”The complaint further alleges that while NACL was negotiating with USACA in good faith, USACA entered into additional agreements with third parties from which USACA also accepted large cash payments for the licensing of the same commercial rights.

Thompson named as new Surrey chairman

Richard Thompson was named on Tuesday as the new chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club.

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Oct-2010Richard Thompson was named on Tuesday as the new chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club. Thompson, 43, becomes the youngest chairman in the country and also the youngest in the club’s history. He replaces the outgoing chairman David Stewart, who led Surrey for seven years.Speaking after his confirmation, Mr. Thompson said: “I am honoured to become chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club. David Stewart will be a tough act to follow and Surrey owes him a great deal of thanks for the contribution he has made in the past seven years as Chairman and further seven as Honorary Treasurer before that.”Surrey is a unique and great club. Despite a period without trophies, I am confident that with the players coming through, the foundations are in place for a period of success in the future. Our members and supporters have been patient and supportive over the past few seasons. I hope with a policy of growing and developing our own talent wherever possible, that any success Surrey CCC may enjoy will be built on firm foundations with Surrey grown talent at the core.”Cricket is going through a period of great change. I will do all I can, to help steer Surrey through those challenges and be a stronger club as a result.”David Stewart added: “It has been most enjoyable and a real privilege to have steered the Club through such exciting and challenging times these last seven years. I am convinced that Richard is the right person to lead the club through the next chapter in its rich history.”

Nel returns to bolster Scotland

Scotland have been given a timely boost ahead of their Intercontinental Cup match against Afghanistan with the return of seamer Dewald Nel. Nel, who signed a two-year deal with Kent ahead of this year’s English domestic season, last played in the county’s game against the touring Pakistanis at the end of June and has been released to play in Scotland’s four-day fixture, which starts on Wednesday at the Citylets Ayr ground.Scotland faced a number of selection issues ahead of the Afghanistan game, as young opener Preston Mommsen has work commitments while experienced middle-order batsman Neil McCallum is struggling to overcome an Achilles problem. Several other players, including seamer Gordon Goudie, allrounder Richie Berrington and spinner Ross Lyons are being monitored for a variety of minor injuries.”It looks like we’ll be without two of our first choice batsmen,” said Scotland’s head coach Peter Steindl. “Preston would have been selected, but he has told us he can’t get time off work. It doesn’t look good for Neil either. We had expected his injury to clear up, but he is having a scan today and the information we’re being given from the physios is he won’t be ready. Our resources are a bit stretched but I’m confident we will get a competitive team on the park.”A total of 20 points are at stake in this match, and an undefeated Scotland are currently at the top of the Intercontinental Cup table, with Afghanistan 12 points behind. In second place is a Zimbabwe XI, only six points behind Scotland, with these two countries due to meet in October in Scotland’s final game of the two-year round-robin series of first-class matches. If the Afghanistan match fails to produce a result, six points are guaranteed to the side that takes a first-innings lead, with an additional three points to each side in the event of a draw. However, outright victory at Ayr would guarantee the Scots a place in the Intercontinental Cup final, to be played in Dubai in November. With all such factors – and the current damp weather – in mind, Scotland’s selectors have chosen a squad which they believe can make the most of this opportunity on a home ground against a team that has never previously played an official competitive game in the United Kingdom.”We’ve performed well in our two previous matches this year away from home [against Kenya in January and the Netherlands in June],” said Steindl. “We are approaching this game with confidence and determination.”Entry to the Ayr ground for this match is free of charge. Scotland also play Afghanistan in two limited-overs internationals at the same ground on Monday and Tuesday next week, for which there will be an entry fee for spectators.Scotland squad: Gordon Drummond (capt), Richie Berrington, Ewan Chalmers, Ryan Flannigan, Gordon Goudie, Majid Haq, Moneeb Iqbal, Ross Lyons, Dewald Nel, Matthew Parker, Qasim Sheikh, Simon Smith, Fraser Watts

Jersey edge last-ball win over Netherlands

A round-up of the second round of games from the European Under-19 Championship

Scorecard
Twenty-four hours after Scotland defeated Ireland on the last ball – Jersey scraped through by one run, again off the last ball, against the Netherlands. Needing five to win from the last over with one wicket left, Paul van Meekeren had seemingly guaranteed a tie for the Dutch by driving Charles Perchard through the covers, but a brilliant diving stop from Andrew Rabet at long-off kept the batsmen to a couple.Three dot balls followed before van Meekeren took a single to leave last man Werner Erkelens needing two from one. Perchard bowled it full and straight and though Erkelens did get bat on it it was only enough to return the ball to the bowler, who comfortably won the footrace to the non-strikers’ stumps, sending Jersey into raptures.Earlier in the day, Jersey were reduced to 58 for 6 by some impressive Dutch seam bowling. Skipper Sebastian Braat led from the front, picking up 3 for 28 in his ten, while Philip van den Brandeler continued his good firm by taking 3 for 26. The most economical spell, however, belonged to left-armer Zacahary van Baren, who got through his ten for only 14.From here, though, Alex Noel (30) and Alex Cooke (31) staged a recovery, and their dogged seventh-wicket partnership of 64 hoisted the Jersey total into the realms of competitiveness: 140 for 8.In reply, the Dutch started equally poorly, losing wickets to the seam of Perchard, Cooke, and Noel before Stevens and James Faudemer took over. The left-arm spinners bowled beautifully together, conceding only 29 runs from their combined overs. The seamers returned and when Aiden McGuire ran out van Baren to leave the Dutch 102 for 8, the Islanders had become favourites.Nevertheless, a ninth-wicket stand of 33 between van Meekeren and the tenacious James Gruijters swung the match back towards the Netherlands before Gruijters – whose mature 42 was undoubtedly the innings of the day – was caught at point with the score on 135. By this stage, a number of Derriaghy locals had made their way to the ground and so a sizeable crowd was present to witness another remarkable climax in this absorbing week of cricket.
Scorecard
At Belmont, Scotland had a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Denmark. Winning the toss, Scotland had no hesitation in asking their opponents to bat first and Denmark were soon in trouble on a soft, damp pitch.Scotland captain Paddy Sadler bowled his ten overs on the trot, taking four wickets for just 10 runs as the top order collapsed. Bashit Javed at No. 6 was the only batsman to get to grips with the bowling and pitch, making 32 of the 55 runs scored. Denmark fell to a final total of 100 in the 45th over. Freddie Coleman grabbed the last three wickets at a cost of four runs in four overs.Scotland began slowly, losing TomMcBride with just 11 on the board. Coleman and Luthra then took the score to 38 before Coleman was run out following a fine piece of work. However, Luthra was joined by Bailwal and they took control and saw Scotland to within sight of victory before Luthra was caught on the deep midwicket boundary by Raja.Scotland reached their target in the 28th over, Bailwal finishing the match with the only six of the day. This victory leaves Scotland with two victories after two rounds of matches.
Scorecard
Ireland put the disappointment of their reversal against Scotland firmly behind them when they comprehensively defeated Guernsey by seven wickets at Stormont.Adam Martel had put Guernsey in a strong position with his 46 from 80 balls, which included five fours and a six. At 94 for 1, Guernsey were well set, but the dismissal of Martel by Irish captain George Dockrell proved a pivotal moment in the game, and Guernsey contrived to lose their last 9 wickets for just 44 runs to finish on 135 all out in just over 44 overs.Andy McBrine (3 for 25), George Dockrell (2 for 13), Shane Getkate (2 for 23) and Barry McCarthy (2 for 25) were the successful wicket takers. Any thoughts that Guernsey could make Ireland struggle were quickly dispelled as Jason van der Merwe and Ryan Hunter launched a blistering attack on the opening bowlers. The pair added 61 in just 4.3 overs, with Van der Merwe striking 4 fours and a six in his 28 from just 14 balls.Hunter went on to score a deserved half century making 55 from just 49 balls. Andy McBrine (20*), and George Dockrell (13*) saw Ireland over the finishing line with more than 30 overs to spare.

Everton: Johnson drops Gueye update

Everton have made an offer in an attempt to bring Idrissa Gueye back to Goodison Park on transfer deadline day.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Simon Johnson, who revealed in a recent post on Twitter that the Toffees have launched a late offer for the Paris Saint-Germain defensive midfielder.

However, The Athletic journalist went on to state that, at this stage, a deal for the 32-year-old looks unlikely, although did suggest that anything can happen on transfer deadline day.

In his tweet, Johnson said: “It’s true that Everton have made a move to re-sign their former midfielder Idrissa Gueye from PSG. But was told last night that it was unlikely to happen. Things can always change though on deadline day.”

Lampard would love it

While it is true that Frank Lampard does have a number of options available in the middle of the park at present, aside from Abdoulaye Doucoure, the vast majority of the Toffees’ central midfielders have been well below-par so far this season, something that would appear to suggest the 43-year-old manager could do with a much more reliable option in the position.

And, considering just how impressive Gueye has been for PSG this term, the Senegal international would very much appear to be an addition to Lampard’s current midfield options at Goodison that the former Chelsea manager would love.

Indeed, over his 15 Ligue 1 outings in the current campaign, the £11.7m-rated man has scored three goals and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 0.9 interceptions, 2.7 tackles, 0.8 key passes, 54.3 total passes and winning 4.9 duels per game.

These returns have seen the £99k-per-week terrier average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.17 in the French top-flight – something that would rank the 32-year-old not only as Everton’s best performing midfielder but their second-best player overall this season.

As such, while Johnson claims that a deal for Gueye looks unlikely at present, it would appear highly advisable for Lampard to do all he can to get the transfer of the midfielder over the line on Monday, as the Senegalese sensation would very much appear to possess the grit and determination that has been so desperately lacking in the Toffees midfield so far this season.

Durham skittle MCC for 162

Close Durham 7 for 2 (Smith 4*, Blackwell 3*, Kirby 2-3) and 459 for 9 declared (Coetzer 172, Di Venuto 131, Malan 4-20) lead MCC 162 (Malan 41, Borthwick 4-27) by 304 runs with eight wickets remaining

Durham put both the MCC batsmen and the much-hyped pink ball through their paces today, skittling their opponents for 162 to take control after two days of the county curtain-raiser.After MCC laboured in stifling heat for just three wickets with the lurid ball on day one, 18 fell on day two. Durham were seven for two at the close – 304 ahead – having declined to enforce the follow-on. They declared their first innings on 459 and went on to make light work of an opposition sorely missing Mark Ramprakash, who flew home yesterday morning.England outcast Steve Harmison took two wickets in a fiery spell with the new ball, while 19-year-old legspinner Scott Borthwick returned four for 27. Durham started on 329 for three but lost Ian Blackwell to Steve Kirby in the first over of the day. Ben Stokes, on his first-class debut, was in at six and mixed a little luckwith some muscular hitting to survive a testing early spell. Kyle Coetzer, 123 not out after batting through day one, added just one run in the first 35 minutes before steering Murtagh through gully for four.Stokes, meanwhile, clubbed Dean Cosker back over his head for six as he shouldered the brunt of the scoring while Coetzer dropped anchor. Durham ticked past 400 in the 119th over and moments later James Middlebrook put down a return catch off the advancing Stokes. He was on 46 at the time and ensured he made a maiden fifty before being caught trying to launch Middlebrook over the top. Coetzer remained in position until the end of the session but his eight-and-a-half hour vigil eventually ended in the softest way imaginable, lbw after missing a full-toss off Dawid Malan’s part-time legspin. His 172 consumed a mammoth 371 deliveries, 281 of which were dots. His dismissal was the first of four wickets in two-and-a-half overs as the Durham innings subsided in short order. Malan, remarkably, took all four wickets, with Borthwick, Mitchell Claydon and Callum Thorp all departing for ducks. Unfortunately for MCC, the flow of wickets was not stemmed by the change of innings and they were three down before the end of the fifth over.Thorp set the ball rolling, trapping Scott Newman leg before as he left a straight one, before Harmison took over. He quickly found some good pace and a testing line and was soon rewarded with the wicket of David Sales, pinned lbw for four. Next to go was James Taylor, the 2009 Young Cricketer of the Year, who fended a fiery delivery to Phil Mustard behind the stumps to depart for a three-ball duck. Captain Alex Gidman led a brief fightback, but fell for 29 as Mustard took a good catch to hand Stokes a maiden first-class wicket. James Foster and Malan steered the total into three figures before the former departed for 26, the victim of a superb return catch by Thorp.Thorp took a third wicket when Malan found Borthwick at point to leave his side 103 for six. Borthwick was then handed the ball and proceeded to rout the MCC’s tail, accounting for numbers eight to 11 with a 29-ball spell worth four for 27.The final score of 162 all out represented a lead of 297, but Will Smith opted to bat again. With both openers making first-innings centuries Smith went in with Borthwick at the top of the order, who promptly made a second duck of the day. Kirby was the bowler and he removed Dale Benkenstein lbw with the very nextdelivery to leave Durham nought for two – a score that improved by just seven before stumps.

Newcastle: Harry Winks a potential target

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks is one of the ‘names’ on Newcastle United’s transfer ‘radar’, journalist Liam Kennedy has told GIVEMESPORT.

The lowdown

The 25-year-old made just his third Premier League start of the season in Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. Two of those have come in Antonio Conte’s first four Premier League matches, though, suggesting that his prospects may have improved under the Italian following the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo.

The £18m-rated midfielder is competing with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso for a place in Spurs’ midfield. He has earned 10 England caps to date, but the last of those came in November 2020.

The latest

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Kennedy revealed that Winks’ name had been mentioned to him by trusted sources in terms of potential Newcastle signings, with the 25-year-old a target for PIF ahead of January.

The journalist revealed: “There are a few other names that I haven’t even written about. Harry Winks is one I know is on their radar.”

The verdict

Winks issued a reminder of his class against Liverpool at the weekend, delivering the highest-rated performance in the Spurs line-up (via SofaScore). He made four interceptions (the most in the match), blocked three shots and completed eight long passes, also covering more ground than any of his team-mates.

If Spurs are willing to listen to offers in January, Newcastle’s new transfer consultant Nick Hammond may deem the ‘excellent’ Winks a smart addition for the relegation-threatened Magpies.

Eddie Howe wants players who are ‘tried and tested’ in the Premier League, and the 25-year-old Tottenham ace has played over a century of games in the division. This could be a crucial criterion for the manager and duly gives credence to the possibility of Winks moving to St James’ Park.

Ex backs Bayo claim out of West Ham

Reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, via the West Ham Way Website, has now backed recent transfer news involving Clermont Foot striker Mohamed Bayo.

The Lowdown: West Ham interested…

As first reported by le10sport, West Ham are interested in signing the colossal 6 foot 2 centre-forward for manager David Moyes as they now turn to Ligue 1 in search of a new striker.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

An alternative to Michail Antonio has long been on the agenda for the club ever since former club record signing Sebastien Haller completed a move to Ajax last January.

Bayo, as per reports, is one of the names being targeted and that has now been reiterated by a very reliable source in ExWHUemployee.

The Latest: Ex backs claims…

As per The West Ham Way, Ex backs le10sport’s original claim that West Ham are indeed interested – going on to say that the 23-year-old has been watched by the club.

The Ligue 1 frontman is apparently attracting their interest as they assess the whole of the French top flight for possible targets.

The Verdict: Good candidate?

Scoring a career total of 48 goals so far, impressive numbers given his age, we believe Bayo shouldn’t be ruled out as a candidate.

He made waves in the French second division last season, playing a heavy hand in Clermont’s promotion to the top flight with 22 goals and eight assists in 38 appearances.

He’s continued in that vain in the big leagues, bagging nine goals already so far, and he could only get better given his age.

He could also come to the London Stadium with great possible sell-on value, with the only caveat being his lack of experience in an extremely competitive division like the Premier League.

World Champions beat to quality Drumm to see off England

England reached their highest batting total of the Women’s Cricket World Series in Christchurch, New Zealand today, but it was not enough to halt the progress of the host nation and current World Champions, who ran out seven-wicket winners.

Andrea Wiggins25-Dec-2009England reached their highest batting total of the Women’s Cricket World Series in Christchurch, New Zealand today, but it was not enough to halt the progress of the host nation and current World Champions, who ran out seven-wicket winners.England Captain Clare Connor won the toss and elected to bat, with England reaching 173 for nine in their 50 overs. The new opening partnership of Kathryn Leng (Yorkshire) and Sarah Collyer (Somerset) made a solid start, Leng especially looking in fine touch driving opening bowler Kate Pulford straight down the ground for four in the first over. The pair had reached 38 in the ninth over before Leng was caught by Haidee Tiffen off Mason for 16. She was replaced by Claire Taylor, who has been playing State cricket in Canterbury this season, and drove imperiously to open her account.Tiffen’s fielding is one of the reasons why New Zealand hold the cherished World Championship crown, and a direct hit ran out Taylor when she had made just eight.Collyer stayed at the crease to reach 39 in the 28th over, before being run out by more sharp fielding, and England were 83 for three. Steele then removed three England middle order wickets in quick succession as Connor was caught and bowled, Arran Thompson stumped by Rebecca Rolls, and Laura Newton dismissed lbw, which saw England at 106 for six in the 37th over. This time, England’s tail had some venom, and attacking batting from youngsters Laura Spragg and Nicki Shaw assisted Dawn Holden in taking England to 144 for eight, Holden reaching 26 before being adjudged lbw.Shaw, in particular, drove well, starting her innings with two fours and the Nottinghamshire pair kept the scoreboard ticking over with well-worked singles as England’s run rate reached 3.30 an over for the first time since the opening stand.Clare Taylor, who became the first Englishwoman to reach 100 caps for her country during the tournament, finished on 16 not out.New Zealand skipper Emily Drumm led the reply after England had taken two quick wickets in the opening spell to leave the match finely balanced with the home side on 53 for two. With New Zealand significantly trailing the required run rate Drumm began to assert some authority over the England bowling. She was dismissed on 92 in the 45th over of the match, when the scores were level, trying to make the winning runs. That honour fell to Tiffen.Despite England’s bowlers containing the New Zealanders, who didn’t reach the required run rate until the 41st over, they were unable to take key wickets and New Zealand have secured their place in the Final on Saturday. They face Australia in a repeat of the thrilling World Cup Final at the same venue in December 2000.England will play India in their last group game on Thursday 6th Feb and will face them again the following day in the play-off for third place.ENGLAND: Kathryn Leng (Yorkshire), Sarah Collyer (Somerset), Claire Taylor (Berkshire), Arran Thompson (Lancashire), Laura Newton (Cheshire), Clare Connor (Capt, Sussex), Dawn Holden (Nottinghamshire), Laura Spragg (Yorkshire), Nicki Shaw (Nottinghamshire), Clare Taylor (Yorkshire), Lucy Pearson (Staffordshire).

Greg Mail, the stubborn top-order batsman, has retired after a 10-year first-class career with New South Wales to take a job in banking. Mail, 31, scored nine hundreds for the Blues in 72 games and leaves with 4085 runs at 32.16.He did well to hold his spot when the state’s internationals returned earlier in the decade, but has not played since the end of last summer. The 2003/04 season was his most successful, with 754 runs at 47.12, including two centuries in the same match against South Australia.”Both on and off the field, Greg set an outstanding example to his team-mates,” the Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert said. “His dedication and commitment to New South Wales over the past decade is a reason why the team has enjoyed such a successful period.” His decision comes despite posting a record with back-to-back double-centuries in the Sydney grade competition.
